This guy Jeff is a complete BAD ASS!!! The amount of stuff he knows, along with how well spoken he is...this guy is on another level. Professional down the line, and a pleasure to listen to. Really impressed by him. It doesn't hurt that he's talking about great gear though either. lol.

Hi friends, to feed the inner gear nerd in me, I recently visited Vintage King LA for a tour. I was able to speak with their sales manager, Jeffrey Ehrenberg as we made our way through all of the amazing pieces of equipment. We discussed gear, but we also delved into some of the history of these great companies that I think you'll find quite interesting. Thanks ever so much for watching, have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren! Another superb and informative trip to the candy store. Excellent educational bits everywhere. For example, the importance of a quality 500 rack with high end power source. That was worth watching all by itself. For your followers and Vintage King fans who are just learning, has there been much thought to more affordable entry equipment such as Phaedrus stuff? SOS have written very favorable reviews. Dialing in pre-amp settings for circuits based on London studio postal codes... They came to mind because they offer their own racks with their own power source. Cool story, too. Love to at least consider the little guys! Thanks, Warren!!!

Only in places like LA and Nashville would a mecca of pro audio equipment like this exist, so thanks for taking us there, Warren. I think it's a testament to the strength and vitality of the music community that exists everywhere, however small or fractured or unsupported. That when the passion is brought together there can be quite a spectacle. It's an inspiration to musicians everywhere, of every means.

Warren, THANK YOU so much for doing what you do. Your interviews are amazing, as you ask the questions most of us want to know. That could only be done by someone of your experience and caliber. You are able to add in your knowledge and experience in with the input and answers of each and every guest. That is worth so much to us.
Also, your teachings and trainings about songwriting, recording, engineering and production are very helpful. You've taught me a few tricks that I never knew, yet I have been recording, songwriting and engineering for more than half my life.
I am considered one of the "Dinosaurs" in the Business, as well. I have been around since the mid-1980s. And, I was working in studios when we switched from analog / tape to digital. So, like you, I adapted and I've learned to love and appreciate both worlds.
I was working here in Central Florida and assisting and tracking at PARC Studios (Neve Console) when Full Sail College was getting started. Merely from my work experience (and being in the room when the school owners came in one evening), I was offered a job on the spot with Full Sail. And I began teaching at the school and in their "rented" studios both night and day. As you already know, we even learn more when we are "teaching". As, students sometimes ask us / challenge us with questions that gives us more ideas, and causes us to search for more answers. That's why you are such a vital part of instruction today on UA-cam / internet in your field.
I know you must love what you do, because so many of us would love to be in your shoes. And, you have started a platform that is allowing more and more artists, songwriters, engineers and producers to learn and come together. This really needed to happen. The "sharing" of knowledge is vital to helping these art forms (recording, production, engineering and music) stay alive and progress forward.
Again, THANK YOU so much. And, knowing you have a wife (she must be wonderfully patient and supportive) and kids, PLEASE give them a big THANK YOU from me - a loyal Fan of your work and videos. I hope they understand and appreciate the importance of your work, dedication to your art, and incredible talent and knowledge you posses.
    Keep up the GREAT Work!!

Thank you Warren and Jeffrey for the great tour!. I was fortunate enough to spend many hours in the speaker demo room as we were picking out the new standard for the +20 sound rooms and the mastering at Riot Games. Honestly, I could spend days at Vintage King. FYI, we ended up with ATC SCM25A for 5.0 surround and JL Audio Fathom F212 sub in the mastering room. Thanks to Vintage King for all of the support!

Awesome Warren! Loved this episode and can't wait for you to return to Vintage Kings! The thing I struggle with most is the listening; hearing what a certain effect sounds like. What compression sounds like, or saturation, or different mics. I (and I think others too) need learn what good sound sounds like! These episodes will be a great step in that direction (for me)! So, that is what I would like to see and hear (compressors, eq's, pre-amps, mics) but also what happens, like you touched on in this one, if you turn it all up like this or that producer does. Can't wait to see what you'll show us! Educate!

Speaking of the old drinks tray story, it's not a myth. I worked as an IT pro at a factory in the 90-00's and we had to replace a couple of CD/DVD-drives for that reason. We also still used floppies back then and here's one you might not have heard yet:
A person from an office in the factory called and said that they are out of floppy disks. Knowing that the person only works with small documents and his 10-pack would last him a lifetime I asked what he was doing at the time. He replies that the computer said that the disk is full and to insert a new disk. After he inserted all of his 10 disks he called us. I pop over to the clients office and open up the side cover and out falls a small pile of floppies. The client had managed to insert them in a crack between the floppy drive and the computer case. #Coin-op

Awesome, one of my favorites. If this could turn into a sub series where you go down there and demo and shootout gear that would be amazing. I'm personally at a point where I'm starting to add some hardware units and each purchase is precious because I don't have 9 different pre's or compressors I can switch between on the drums. I don't have a huge mic locker so everything I buy is going to be heavily used but I want it to last because nothing is more expensive than replacing gear you're not using.

I would like to hear how varying the impedance affects the sound of a mic pre. I've been curious since I heard about GrooveTubes' ViPre.

Warren, this is a fantastic tour of a place I've only visited in the virtual world, because I live on the east coast of Florida. I'd be sooner in Nashville, than LA. My only criticism is not enough B roll showing the rack gear in detail whilst you're talking about it. The same would go for any of the gear you're talking about. Often, we see this gear in ads or magazines or even in the online stores, but not so much "in the wild" or at least "in the zoo", as it were. :) Often times, I find that I can never get the physical scale of the stuff because it's always presented in an isolated fashion. To see the pieces in their natural'ish habitat, gives another dimension of comprehension and familiarity that's very important. So, thanks for doing all of this, but show everything in some detail, too! Cheers from Florida!

Thanks Warren, I enjoy all of your videos, and get a real sense that your videos are a wonderful public service to the unwashed masses about gear, the business, and making the best of whatever we have. I recently followed your advice and purchased a Lewitt mic, an LCT 550 to be exact. I'm still putting it through its paces. I also purchased a new Babyface Pro as my interface. I am really enjoying both. I am attempting to be a song writer, and since I do not have space for a dedicated studio (single dad) I have purposely set my sights on being mobile so I can relocate to any room in the house or out of it, if need be. So at this point I am wondering if you could help me decide on wether I need a mic pre or not, or if you could point me the right direction as far as what I can do to add some warmth to my signal chain, and still remain reasonably portable.

    Awesome idea Warren.
I'd really like hear a comparison between a SM7B and any condenser microphone for vocals to see how much of a difference the pick up pattern and isolation makes (and how much more gain it needs). I've heard that for untreated spaces the SM7B will do much better and since a lot of home studio owners aren't recording in treated rooms this would be a good comparison. I'm sure its good advice but I've always wondered whether the difference will be night and day. Maybe pull the mics out of the isolation room and try on the shop floor, or keep the door open and play a song on speakers from across the shop to test for isolation.
Also maybe throw up a SM57 in the mix.

How does the mains voltage in the UK make any difference to the sound of the Marshall, when it's only 240 at the power transformer primary. Once you change the primary tap to 240, the secondary voltages are the the same as if you were running it on 115.

Hello Warren, incredible video as always! Just incredibly educational and as always makes me feel like I'm learning all of those important nuggets of information that you could only otherwise learn back in the old days with that fly on the wall approach. Where you would assist and receive mentorship directly or indirectly from experienced people. I thank you for bringing that record making culture where its not only focused on the gear; but even more so on the great people behind every part of the process. It is extremely inspirational for a young musician/producer like myself based out of Guadalajara, Mexico!
I have a very specific request for a video for your potential series in Vintage King LA. I don't know how viable it is to discuss the workflow choices of integrating consoles with modern digital workflows. For example, just how many ins and outs of conversion would you require to get the most out of those consoles? Monitoring section quality, and the benefits of having analog cue sends outside of the DAW aux sends realm.
The reason why I ask this is that for example, that SSL XL-Desk looks like a great solution as it brings together so many different necessities... 8 mic pres/500 series insert points/Additional insert points/aux sends/G series comp/Superanalogue signal path/cues/4 mix busses/etc. and that Sigma looks like it packs quite an impressive feature set when used in conjunction with consoles.
But I really have no idea just how much consideration has to be made on the I/O conversion part of the equation and how to best marry the convenience of the DAW with the Analog Console. It would also be interesting being on that same topic of consoles to see how different brands/models of consoles react to getting driven harder, a kind of a console sonic character A/B test. I suppose just a console focused video would be amazing... an in depth video where perhaps you could elaborate more on how exactly you used every single aspect of the 1608 for the Fray album and why that worked so well for that record!
Sorry for the long post Warren, I'm just a gear nerd and overall music fan like yourself... I feel its not very common to find this sort of information online and I thank you for being so generous with sharing your information on this lovely channel! Can't wait for future videos!

I'm really excited because all the thoughts I had watching this video, like a 500 series day, running audio through gear, hearing the speakers,... are on your to-do list. I am looking forward to the speakers especially. If you could shoot out Focal Trio6 with the Neumann KH310 (and maybe the Amphions as well), I'd be in heaven. Additional idea: 1-mic setups for the Eric Valentine drums.
Thanks Warren and everyone at VKLA! This is truly a special endeavor you've taken on.
Quick note though: As far I know, the Kush Clariphonic is a parallel equalizer, meaning that there is no parallel option per se (with dry/wet control or parallel on/off) but rather parallel is its standard operation. But obviously Gregory Scott would be the best person to ask about this.

A truly inspiring video. As a totally newbie and the proud owner of my own "studio" with 1 computer, 1 audio interface, a couple of MIDI controllers, my guitars and a microphone, my question is this... With so many options, so much equipment, when do you as a professional know " when you have enough" Does that time come when you can say that your studio is " complete", or do you feel the need of changing you setup from time to time in order to fresh up in terms of creativity ?

+Produce Like A Pro Warren, on the same note, it would be great to see some examples you and Jeff brought up in the video as part of the "showing hot it's used" follow-up. For example, Jeff made a reference to dual-compressor and when you would used it vs "your favorite" compressor being worked too hard. Or many references to certain compressors or EQ for voice v drums - it would be great to see why you and Jeff like them for the specific applications and why you don't use them - i.e. Show a EQ or compressor you or Jeff use for voice and then use it for drums and walk through what you both are hearing. I think this studio has a great setup to do this with all the switching gear that can quickly go between one effect or the other. Love what you are doing for the community. Your stuff is amazing. Thank you.

For some reason you come across really honest and likable; like it's almost odd cause you're just talking, but you come through as a really good guy. Anyways, do you have any business tips on how to make it in the production business? Perhaps share your experiences on how YOU got to where YOU are?
