Clam chowder is one my favorite things in the world. I'm allergic to crustaceans(shrimp, crab, lobster) But not mollusks (clam, oysters, scallop etc) so it always feels like I'm getting away with something when I eat it. Btw, great job mom and dad for making these tremendous memories possible for the kiddos
Love your channel! So glad you made it to Oregon, my home. You REALLY lucked out with the weather....when it happens, its glorious. Oregonians usually wear a jacket with a hood...when the sun comes out..we run outside! Safe travels!
Exactly - the sharing and the (mostly) mmm expressions (not everyone liked everything-acceptable) was legend. I like clam chowder - especially when it's done right. I've had a few that made me ask if there were any clams in this lumpy flower soup.....
Hey guys, I've tried New England clam chowder and love it!!! My son is on the spectrum and he's BIG on textures and flavors, he recently tried clam chowder and loved it!!! I've heard of Marionberries, although I've never tried them, they sound delicious though. I love how you share your cultural experiences with the whole fam, it's great to see. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing more of your journey.
This is more like "New Zealand Piranha Family try Clam Chowder & Marionberry for the first time"! Yum, Yum, Yum, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme! This was hilarious to watch! That restaurant should have sponsored the video. You guys made me want to drive from Kentucky just to try that food.
I'm a lifelong Oregonian and have enjoyed the Chowder Bowl in Nye Beach since the early 80's. Hands down the best on the west coast. And that's not just nostalgia speaking. I'm so thrilled watching your adventures through my part of this magnificent country. Thank you for sharing something you and your kids will remember for the rest of your lives. ❤
That's my opinion as well. I know I'll be back early winter for the Sea Lion Caves in Florence but without a doubt we'll eat at the Chowder Bowl and crab and, well, I think it's actually called Crab!
Hello Jon, I have a question ... is the Huckleberry shakes also just an Oregonian thing? Several years ago I was out there visiting Medford and I fell in love with those shakes, the cinnamon roll French toast, Dutch Bros coffee stands, The Oregon Vortex House Of Mystery, the waterfall tour around Crater Lake and Jasper's Cafe!!
Ah my home state of 27 years! I love Oregon and am so happy you guys like it. Mo's is the best clam chowder ever, lots to do on the coast!!!! Oregon is truly beautiful!!
Jake I have to leave ore due to the rapid barometric pressure changes making me ill! Plus the drug decriminalization has endangered my life ! I'm leaving my native state hoping to start over in another country due to trump co ! I'm sorry to leave my native state!
Our only child (he is 35) moved from Michigan to Massachusetts 8 months ago and we miss him bigger than the universe. We are planning on visiting for Christmas. He lives about an hour from Boston proper. @bdaoust2007 can you give us any tips on places to see and stay? He has roomies in MA and I offered to make Christmas dinner at his place and wow I was shot down, I think it is a bachelor pad and he does not want us over other than to honk from the driveway, moving right along so I am wanting a place I can cook and have him and his roomies over for Christmas Day dinner. Any ideas where to stay? He is in a town called Fitchburg. Many thanks.
They aren't directly, they are a crazy lineage of various blackberries. A Marion berry is a cross between Chehalem and Olallie black berries, those berries are hybridized logan berries... anyway there are 14 berries in their lineage and one in the second generation is a raspberry.
When you go to Seattle try the Ivar’s clam chowder, Pike street market. Also, when you get back home Atlanta should make a pot of “Fall River” clam chowder.
This is a video like all the others that you can't help but smile watching, especially seeing genuine reactions to all the different foods available across the land is fun too.
It is always a pleasure watching your family enjoy yourselves. You are always so real, funny & love to have a good time. It is good to see all of you enjoy whatever it is that you are doing. So, glad to see you in Oregon. It is a lovely state & laid back & very kind. Shine on!
After watching each video where you all rate the food, the one thing that always cracks me up is that I long for it. So, with that in mind, I will make clam chowder from scratch today. Lucky me has to go shopping anyway so now I know what to cook tonight.
This happens to me every Monday and Friday, with the Irish. They wind up trying something that I usually don't eat like pizza or some sort of chips and that's all I want, because their videos come out at dinner time😅
Thought you might enjoy this little fact: I am a retired 20-year veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. My wife of 43 years is Korean, born and raised. For entertainment, she only watches Korean programming. She never watches TV or movies with me... except for your videos. I've been watching since the first time you tried grilled cheese sandwiches. Recently, when I was watching the first video on your U.S. RV tour, she happened to see it and stopped and asked what I was watching. I told her a little bit about your channel. Intrigued, she sat down and watched with me. Now she watches every episode with me, and asks me every day if there is a new one. We both thoroughly enjoy them. Thank you for doing what you do. It brought my wife and I just a little bit closer than we already were.
I grew up in Oregon, and have been to the chowder bowl many times. I live in Hawaii now, but when I go back to visit family, the chowder bowl is still one of my favorites.
@yournewzealandfamily Are you coming to Oklahoma? I would love to meet you all. I would love to cook for you all. Whitetail deer or catfish, maybe both...
This is a special one for me... loved going to the Chowder Bowl with my Grandparents. Newport is little known gem. Thank you for bring back the memories.
This is another successful video because you left me smiling, happy, hungry and a wee bit jealous. 😊😅 I can't say it enough that I'm so pleased & proud that y'all had such a good time here.
I was lucky enough to live in Oregon during the fall when the marionberries ripened. There's a little town on the coast called Garibaldi and I'd go there almost every weekend to pick marionberries and go crabbing on their amazing pier. You can rent the crab traps there and catch SO much fresh dungeoness crab for dinner. Marionberries grew wild along the train tracks and they were so prevalent, my sister and I had marionberry fights--slinging the berries at each other; the results were similar to paintball and we'd both be 75% purple at the end! I wish I could say we were children when we did this but we were mid/late 20s. :D
I love the Oregon Coast so much. The little towns are perfect. The scenery is ridiculous! Clam Chowder is a very hearty, warm dish and perfect for that area.
I've said it before, but your videos are the best on youtube, I look forward to every one of them, Really good Quality entertainment for everyone, Thank you guys!!
This Family Vacay makes me irrationally happy... God Bless You NZ Family!.. Can't wait for the next video. I mentioned it before , I SOOOO want you to do a similar RV trip here in Canada. Either an East Coast run (Toronto --> P.E.I. or Newfoundland) or a West Coast Run (Calgary ---> Northern BC....Maybe even Yukon!).
I enjoy good clam chowder....and yes, lots of clams on the coast there. Now the Merion Berry thing seems like a definite to do as well. Great video. Glad y'all are having such a great trip.
This is seriously the most wholesome family on youtube ive ever seen and ive been watching since the football reactions from Sam. I really hope i get to meet your amazing family one day! Much love from a big and long term fan from the Capital of Florida!
I live in Washington state...been to the Oregon coast many times. Nothing beats a good clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl on a cold, foggy day ! It's good always...but....Something about eating it on the coast...makes it taste 100x better! Maybe it's the salty air?? ...IDK...lol
Friend of mine from New York taught me when I get clam chowder in a bowl to put some shredded cheddar cheese in the chowder. But I bet shrimp on top of all of that would be really good too! 🤤
I am not entirely sure what it is but She Crab soup is amazing. I lived in Florida and it was a seasonal dish at a local beach bar/restaurant, that restaurant was also covered by Guy Fieri’s show Triple D.
I have never tried west coast clam chowder when I was out there. In New England its very common and every family has their own version. We usually enjoy best the kind mom made growing up.
Sourdough is definitely the way to go with clam chowder. I don’t know what it is but there is something about the flavor combination that is otherworldly.
I'm googling and trying to figure out what makes boston clam chowder different. I make my own clam chowder cuz I live in one of those clam-free countries. The Boston style recipes look just like mine, but with bacon.
Boston Clam Chowder is different from Oregon Clam Chowder. I’ve eaten both and love both. I find that neither is Better! They are both great foods, especially after hours out on the cold sea coasts!
I love Tabasco on any creamy soup (any soup really lol) and clam chowder BEGS for it! Wish you would have had some to put on it, Sam. So addictive! (And black pepper too, to be fair)
Grew up on the coast & have been to many of the places you guys are spotlighting, love the food, had a nice marionberry patch behind my house for years & made many things from them, have fun!
Marionberry is a cross breed of blackberry that was invented at Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1945. It really only grows in Oregon's climate. There is a very close hybrid that was created later using the boysenberry from Australia (Silvanberry) that has very similar qualities but can live in a much wider climate area. I believe you should be able to get and grow the Silvanberry in NZ as they love that costal temperate band.
You can buy Marionberry plants online in the US from stores like Gurney's or Burgess plant stores and they like medium to hot climates (zone 4 to 9 ) 4 is like Nebraska and 9 is like Florida or South Texas and so you can grow them in most of the US.
So you'll do very well making a Chowder of New Zealand Tuatua clams. They will be very similar. Scallops and Mussels are a good substitute you should be able to find all over NZ. You can also do a similar recipe with crawfish meat, or a very mild but firm fish (Gurnard or Cod for example). The results will be very close. Also there is another option. The cost is high, but many places will freeze pack and ship (or know a place that will) clam chowder to you in NZ. Clam chowder is something that frozen reheats almost exactly like fresh.
I've down chowder/soup bowl many times for special occasions and the family loves it! We make our own salmon chowder on a regular basis. It is a much requested meal from our kids & grandkiddos. As are our fish tacos with mango chutney.😋 Marionberries were developed in Marion county here in Oregon.
i grew up going to newport, usually shopping along the old bay front. we also yurt-camped at south jetty for most of my life. i haven't gotten to go in a couple years now, and this is making me nostalgic. i'm glad you had a good time, and hope oregon didn't disappoint.
I'm so glad you guys got the chance to visit Oregon and finally taste marionberry! Newport is one of my favorite coastal towns in Oregon to visit and it's awesome that you had such nice weather when you visited :)
If you guys ever come back to the States Oregon is definitely somewhere you absolutely have to revisit. The Salem area is the capital and there’s such a rich history from the manifest destiny era and things to just do and see.
Marionberry is indeed an Oregon specialty. It is a blackberry cultivar developed at Oregon State University, and is widely grown here. There is a “native” blackberry that is not actually a native plant, but got here somehow and is VERY invasive, birds eat them and spread the seeds. Marionberry was developed from them, but are a much larger berry, about the size of the last joint of the thumb. You can use them like any other berry, as in pies, jams, syrups, etc. Glad you enjoyed them! I follow you closely, and am happy you are enjoying Oregon. To me the climate (at least on the western side of the state) is very similar to NZ. Got to spend 6 weeks in NZ a few years ago, 3 weeks on each island.
This is the way. lol. Sourdough and chowder w. a crab cake is one of my favorite meals ever. Been waiting for this episode. Glad you enjoyed! Coastal Oregon is a great place for that, too. 💖
Our family makes seafood boils, and yes we all love new england clam chower, when we were young our father would mand a seafood chowder it was delicious
My family"s favorite restaurant in Newport is the Nye Beach Chowder Bowl. We live about an hour away in the Willamette Valley. We are so fortunate to be living in beautiful Oregon. What a fun video watching your family enjoying one our favorite spots!
Was born and raised in L.A. and moved to Palm Springs when I was 20. Lived there for 20 years and then moved up to Seattle, where I am now. Kinda cool that I get to see you guys visiting all my hometowns.
These are memories that you will have all of your life, I took the same route when i was younger, yes the clam chowder is amazing, you will likely comeback later in life. There is so much to see on the west coast . You can’t see everything.
The west coast, Gulf coast and east coast are known for the best, and freshest, seafood! If you like seafood, we are blessed here in the United States. Seafood! I see food, I eat it! Lol I have to say, seafood is the bomb! Not a winter goes by when I don't make my fish chowder (halibut, haddock, shrimp, taters, onions & corn on the cob, simmered for hours in a shrimp stock) and my clam chowder. And no summer is complete without my family's clam bake and my maple smoked salmon, brushed with maple syrup while smoking for 3 hrs, low & slow. And for my older daughter's and older son in law's birthdays (within a week of each other) they usually always choose surf & turf (lobster tail and ribeye steaks).
It's taking me a lot longer than 19 minutes to watch this video because I keep pausing to comment because I don't wanna miss anything. 😊 Y'all just look so happy! I guess smiles ARE contagious. I haven't stopped since I hit play.
Your love of Ranch dressing reaches a level of true American passion
It's so good. lol
Good freshly made ranch is so addictive ha. Can’t stand the bottled stuff after you get the GOOD ranch.
My brother, GOD rest his soul, used to make fresh Ranch dressing back in the early 1980's before the dressing came to our area in the bottle. It was GREAT!
As a kiwi myself visiting the states earlier in the year the best ranch I tried was in Chicago at Lou Malnati's... Celery never tasted so good! lol
My wife makes a ranch dressing that's to die for.

Here in the Midwest we call those fries steak fries because of how big they are
Also in Oregon
I've eaten chowder there and it is amazing!
I have never tried west coast clam chowder when I was out there. In New England its very common and every family has their own version. We usually enjoy best the kind mom made growing up.
Sourdough is definitely the way to go with clam chowder. I don’t know what it is but there is something about the flavor combination that is otherworldly.
Awww!!! I love Newport!
Boston clam chowder is life changing though!!

You new found love of ranch makes you guys true Americans
I did a Google search and apparently Clam chowder is available in NZ. America's Test kitchen is a fabulous show with the best recipes.
So glad your first experience with clam chowder was a good one! It’s so easy to mess it up! Great video!
Your editing is perfect, loved it!
I am so enjoying your adventure in the RV. I can’t wait until I see the next video.
Oh I love New England Clam Chowder!!! It is so good and such a comfort food!!!!😋
Thanks for bringing simple joy to our day. ❤
Glad your enjoying eating your way up the west coast…I’m from Seattle can’t wait to see what u will be up to there.
Grew up on the coast & have been to many of the places you guys are spotlighting, love the food, had a nice marionberry patch behind my house for years & made many things from them, have fun!
Clam chowder is the best
You guys are so jazzed about the food. Love it. Everything you had is total soul food to most of our country. They are all staples
Maybe the chowder is more coastal . Midwest; clam chowder isn't really a big thing.
Pike place market is the home to the first Starbucks in the world in Seattle Washington! ❤
You guys are in my neck of the country. So glad to see you guys enjoying the local delicacies. We also have world class big game hunting around here
Marionberry is a cross breed of blackberry that was invented at Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1945.
Thank you. Had no idea on the marionberry.
You can buy Marionberry plants online in the US from stores like Gurney's or Burgess plant stores and they like medium to hot climates (zone 4 to 9 ) 4 is like Nebraska and 9 is like Florida or South Texas and so you can grow them in most of the US.
I took my Corgi and went there last summer with my sister, who lives in Lincoln City. Great atmosphere and food at the Chowder Bowl.
As are our fish tacos with mango chutney.😋
Marionberries were developed in Marion county here in Oregon.
I grew up in the PNW. Clam chowder is a staple in these parts! Also salmon and halibut.
i grew up going to newport, usually shopping along the old bay front. we also yurt-camped at south jetty for most of my life. i haven't gotten to go in a couple years now, and this is making me nostalgic. i'm glad you had a good time, and hope oregon didn't disappoint.
The Ladies know...their reactions were, spot on.
I've had clam chowder with my fish fry every Friday night at the same restaurant for over ten years and I love it
Ultimate comfort food.
ive been to the Chowder Bowl many times...great food ...looks like a beauty of day....cheers from Albany OR
My family"s favorite restaurant in Newport is the Nye Beach Chowder Bowl. We live about an hour away in the Willamette Valley. We are so fortunate to be living in beautiful Oregon. What a fun video watching your family enjoying one our favorite spots!
I was gifted a jar of Marionberry once. Best jam I ever tasted.
Was born and raised in L.A. and moved to Palm Springs when I was 20. Lived there for 20 years and then moved up to Seattle, where I am now. Kinda cool that I get to see you guys visiting all my hometowns.
I love that you were all matching with the blue
Great aquarium in Newport. Marionberry is awesome. I lived in Oregon 30 years. My fave state. In Idaho now
It's taking me a lot longer than 19 minutes to watch this video because I keep pausing to comment because I don't wanna miss anything. 😊 Y'all just look so happy! I guess smiles ARE contagious. I haven't stopped since I hit play.
So awesome an American fan saw you in person!!! Lol I doubt you'll ever be to Wisconsin tho it's amazing. But maybe someday!
