I swear Oystein Baadsvik is the greatest tuba player of our age. Love his works and playing not to mention Fnugg which took me forever to learn to play properly
him and Sam Pilafian are the 2 best tuba players alive. theres a lot of debate over who is better, too me i believe Oystein is better, in part because he has formed a career soloing on the TUBA!!! soloing on higher instruments is normal, but to make a successful career on the tuba is extremely impressive
Will probably forever and always be my favorite tuba recording. Brings tears to my eyes. Was a pleasure meeting and working with this man. Phenomenal player and musician. I have much to learn.
The instrument is a good part of the performance. You could buy a new car and house for the cost of the Tuba. Money is everything in an instrument sound..
That's simply not true. Hand Baadsvik a $1000 Chinese-made tuba. He'll sound amazing on it. The instrument definitely plays a role in tone quality, but it's mostly left up to the player. A $40000 tuba does help, though.
@@KlldbyCuriosity Where does this reply come from? I have just retired from 60 years of playing in brass bands and orchestras. I played the French horn for a better part of that time. So pipsqueak you know even less.
Thank you for writing this incredible piece of music! My 17 year old performed this at a high school recital night and brought several other students to tears. Amazing music! Thank you.
Just heard this performed live tonight and. This piece feels like a warm hug on a rainy morning. The rain is beginning to lessen and the sun is rising, only this time the sun shines upon a world without issue. He said before he performed this piece, that he was inspired by the sunrise. In Norway, the winters are dark, and when the sun finally rises it's a huge moment. In that moment, everything really was alright
I played this on the euphonium for my first solo ensemble and it was one of the most memorable performances I've ever had. It helped me learn to put my heart and soul into playing, and that the piece doesn't have to be technically difficult to be hard or a challenge.
I have loved this song since I first heard it several years ago. I don't think that ever hit me emotionally this hard until I listened to it again today. Understanding Mr. Baadsvik's reasoning for this title seems even more poignant for today. Thank you for this very appropriate piece, written and performed so exquisitely.
The page turner is my band teacher, and he used this piece as an example for a listening log assignment, in which we have to do a recommendation, and his example recommendation legit said "10/10 would recommend, the page turner's skills are amazing"
I know I can always come back to these beautiful pieces when I'm having a tough time in life or with school like I am right now, thank you for being you oystein. it truly inspires me every day by listening to you play
What beauteous sound! Wow, this is why Oystein will always be one of my inspirations and role models for the moderately fast vibrato and high ranged tuba. Brava.
Mr. Baadsvik, could you please share your secrets? Make a CD describing how you're so talented or something! You would make so much money by selling it and or trying to make a profit out of it. Also improving the quality of many young musicians, aiding their success. I literally taught myself how to play tuba and admiring you, attempting to emulate every aspect of your playing style has been such a challenge. You are truly unique and gifted, no one would ever come close to you musical abilities, therefore, help us young tuba players go down your path and become great like you.
Nobody becomes great over night. His incredible talent comes from over thirty years of practice and maintenance. He is most certainly in it for the long haul and that is how he became so great.
he does master classes. if you fund-raise enough money you can fly him to america to do a masterclass at the local college if the college is interested. which im sure they would be
Help me know more about Vinicius Soares and Order Seg. The music is haunting and reaches deep into the soul. With Baadsvik at the helm I feel as if I am departing into unknown waters, into a sea of enchantment.
When ever I'm struggling to find motivation to practice or just even be bothered with music (which is a problem as I'm studying a performance undergrade on tuba at a conservatoire) there are a few videos I go to to rekindle my love and remind myself why am trying for a music career. Grimethorpe's Danny Boy, Karl Jenkins - Benedictus (Cory and Only Men Aloud's performance), Anything that Mnozil brass play, anything that Alessandro Fossi does, but above all I find that Oystein Baadsvik is the most effective at making me understand that although it's a lot of (at time tedious) work, it's all completely worth it for performances like this. He is truly a master of his instrument and I hope I can see him live one day. Although there is the problem that it is currently 00:15 and all I want to do is play my instrument but it's too late :(
i chose to do New Kid for my regional Solo and Ensemble Festival before i found this, now i wish i was doing this song instead since its a bit easier and much more beautiful

@@xcm720 I thought group 1 solos had to come from a list. I'd also have transpose it down anyway because there s no way I'm hitting those notes on a BBb.

I got to (chose it and my professor said ok) play this for my first Brass Jury my freshman year last year. Thinking back, I played it pretty decent, but nowhere near the level that he did. I wish I was even half the tubist Baadsvik is
It's a Miraphone. Specifically this one is a "Starlight", and his older stuff is on a "Norwegian Star". I've got a Norwegian Star and love it to death, it's a really flexible tuba that can handle almost anything you throw at it.
It's more the player than the horn. Baadsvik would sound like a million dollars on a beat up old tuba that has been at a middle/high school for 30+ years.
***** Yeah, the Norwegian Star's a nice mid-sized Eb. It's bigger and broader than those teeny tiny solo F tubas, but it's not as big and clumsy as a full symphonic CC or BBb.
It's very much the horn aswell as the player. All three parts have to be quality to produce a quality sound: The Player, The Horn, The Receiver(Mouthpiece) all have to be well enough equipped to make something, especially something like this piece, have the beautiful sound it does.
