    I find it very funny that some of the higher notes of the song are red on the sheet music, since the software that put it there for the video is basically saying that "No tuba should play that high". Clearly they should.

    Every now and then in the last few years I've came across this video and it's made me realize it's not a Tuba's range that makes them recognizable, it's their tone. I always just focused on how high or low they could play a few years ago, but tone is the most important part. If you were to hear øystein play without seeing him, you would know it's øystein. Range isn't a problem for me when it comes to this piece, it's tone. Playing pedal tones with good tone is easy, but playing high notes with a tone that makes it as if you almost couldn't tell if it was a euphonium or a tuba playing is hard. Øystein makes it sound easy.

  • @MenelionFR
    @MenelionFR 2 роки тому +49

    Everyone is thrilled by superfast runs, double tonguing and such things that Øystein makes on tuba, and I am also. But I'm just mesmerized and deeply moved by those lyrical pieces, where his instrument sounds like some big soothing and calming being, a huge purring cat with kind magical green eyes protecting you from every evil in this world. Shivers down the spine.

    I think one thing people watching this need to consider is that he's playing a F tuba, meaning that his high F (the highest note in the piece) is roughly equivalent to a Bb tuba's high Bb, which is relatively common for ensemble tubas to be playing, in terms of your chops and embouchure aperture.

    since I'm in middle school and I started playing trumpet last year as my first instrument to play but close to the end of my first year in band i switch to tuba ( yeah it wasnt easy getting used to it) and since I practice alot just to keep of with my section and I'm now 2nd chair in my tuba section and i was thinking man im good but watching this guy makes me feel like I never heard what a tuba sounded like

    • @dogemusicproductions7444
      @dogemusicproductions7444 8 років тому

      Mr. Tuba that's an E-flat tuba i'm pretty sure. What tuba do you play? E-flat tubas can play higher than CC and BB-flat tubas.

    • @panpolypuff
      @panpolypuff 8 років тому +1

      Shatterbass GD Mr. Baadsvik does, indeed, play an Eb tuba. The music can be played in any tuba, though. Higher-pitched tubas have an easier time in thr high register, and typically have a little more resonance there, but a CC or BBb tuba can do all the same things if the player is good enough. :)

    day 36 of listening to this masterpiece for an entire year
    this being comment #750, I'll say that this song reminds me of some kind of dystopian ballroom dance. It's as if the two partners dance and as they lock eyes with one another, the song slows down, and one of them starts fading away from existence. During the melodic return, it stops temporarily. After the meoldy plays for the final time, however, the partner completely fades, leaving the other in an empty room in a depressive state.

    • @54321blader
      @54321blader 9 років тому +5

      Sparksterfu I assume it's because you are using a BBb Tuba and I believe he is using an Eb or F which is made to play incredibly high parts.

    • @Sparksterfu

      That is correct, my school only provided a Bb flat tuba, If I wanted anything else I would have to play out of my own pocket. Perhaps that was less of an option when I was a poor college student, but now I could afford it, and perhaps I will buy one.
