The reason you have so much algae is because you have a clear pot inside a clear pot. The outer pot needs to be opaque to stop the light. If there is too much algae it steals the nutrients from the plant. If the roots are too covered in algae, it will destroy the roots. I have a number of plants in pon in opaque cover pots & don't have a big algae problem. My plants are all under growlights because my house is dark. Hope this helps. 😊🤞
I love how you set out with a list of to-dos with your plant chores. Not only do you remember to do each, but at the end of the list, you know what you've done. Often, I go out to garden, get a bunch of stuff done, but feel like I haven't done much.....With a list, the accomplishments are more concrete (praiseworthy!)... Always enjoy your videos - they inspire me to take care of my plants!
I’ve actually transitioned a Florida ghost prom pon to soil about a month ago and it seems to be doing well. It’s actually pushing out a new leaf right now so I guess I’ll know how well the transition went once it unfurls.
I’d be keen to know as well because I’m currently rehabbing my ghost after doing the same lol. It was in soil for about a month, and then all of the sudden it started going down hill so fast. I had to chop off probably half the root system, and I eventually ended up putting it in perlite which it seems to be liking a lot better now. I’m wondering if it’s my own doing or if these guys are just sensitive to transferring potting media lol. My guess is the first option but I’d love to know how yours ends up doing!
@@kameronwilkes6929 update time! The newest leaf looks great and I see roots pooping up from the drainage hole already. I have it potted in terracotta with a very chunky mix, if you’re curious.
Hey, Fern! Re: putting it into a different container to stop the algae. Spray paint another cup a darker colour and just place it in that as a cache pot. Should work a treat.
I was speaking to the owner of an amazing tropical Nursery. Him and I got on the subject of using Pon as a medium. I told him I did not like the algae it was gross blah blah blah. He started to explain to me that as long as the plants have good airflow. The algae can be extremely beneficial to the plant. He said not only does it help provide natural nutrients (like in the wild) it can also act as a protector. I haven’t researched this information, just figured I would pass it on. 💛💚🧡
Yes, I think it's particularly extreme in her case because her vessels are closed at the bottom. I have my plants in pon in clear orchid pots in a diy self-watering system with a wick and a glass vase/vessel. With the aeration at the base I really barely get algae and I have south-facing windows. I'll just get a little bit at the base on the side that's facing the window (and not even on all the plants) and that little bit can certainly be beneficial. It's just when it gets out of hand that it can rob the plants of oxygen and nutrients.
FYI: I use similar clear plastic cups, and have started using the top of an old dress sock to cover - guess you could call it a cover sock. They are stretchy and nylon and fit perfectly. Also, I've used an old cotton sports sock with the striping as a cover sock for one I have in a small glass jar. For my Syngonium 'Pink Spot' I have in LECA in a concave shaped glass vessel, I covered it with an old pair of stretchy jeans. I used the ankle part, measured up and cut. Actually looks kinda cool with the boho Syngonium in her curvy jeans.
Hi Fern, I love your plant chores videos and repottings, too! Gives me inspiration yo keep on top of my own! Yes, watering used to be a chore for me but I transitioned most of my collection into LECA in self watering and it changed my plant watering life! I truly don't mind watering now because I've got less to drag to the sink!! Enjoy your mini vacation! 😍
You seem like you're living such a healthy lifestyle. Instead of drinking alcohol you're here drinking soothing tea. Props to you girl! Also, you're glowing :)
Second comment- as your black velvet gets more mature it will stop losing so many leaves. When immature, they will lose a leaf each time a new one comes in, but that will pass. Please put your clear pots in an opaque pot to minimize your algae.
Yayyyyyy I'm so glad your sheperdii is taking off after using the orchid fertilizer! Nothing better than seeing new growth points on a plant that has been dormant
I’ve recently started using 2 cups for each plant. I get a pointy metal tool (bought one @ the dollar store in the craft section) hot with a lighter & poke holes all around the inside cup. I put the plant in pon in the cup & then put it inside the 2nd cup with the water reservoir. When I need to flush it, I just run water through it & put it back in the 2nd cup with fresh water. It has changed my Pon game & my plants are thriving now. I have really enjoyed using pon like this. Good luck!
Thank you for the video. I sprayed my hoya crimson princess with the orchid plant food and the same happened to my hoya. Within a week there were multiple new growth points! I don't think it is a coincidence.
I usually get a long plastic container and put as many plants in it and use a pitcher to water. That way you can put your plants back in the same spot without walking back and forth!
omg a little sleeve or sock for your containers with pon would be so cute/practical! someone on tiktok calls them plant socks or something and does it with theirs
Yes take them off! Make sure to note which side is up and lay it on top of soil in a sunny spot. Maybe then your plant can focus on leaves? Also remember Alocasia can go dormant in the winter.
I transitioned my silver sword from Pon to soil, it was like the Pon had set because the roots were so nuts. Lol, so up-potted into soil. She did loose a leaf or two, but they were the oldest, now she has about 3 new growth points 👍🏼🪴😍 x
@@wildfern I'm learning right now myself! It's super easy to get started I highly recommend. I just ordered a set of hooks and one ball of yarn from Amazon for like $20
I agree on the orchid spray for hoyas, I've seen some great results. I did research on what is in it though as it is a ridiculously easy mix to do yourself for a fraction of the price.
You always give me inspiration. I can't just watch a full episode through. I have to stop and do my plant chores then come back to finish watching. 💟 Enjoy your weekend away. 🌱
Sometimes you can take the corms off even while they’re still attached! I’ve seen it done a handful of times BUT I’m not sure if this causes stress of any sort, though when it’s been done it been said that it’s totally fine to do. I’m totally afraid to be pulling anything off my roots like that so to each their own! 😂 but if you’d like to experiment it could be safe!
Love your videos! I have had success at keeping algae from growing by adding just a very little bit of charcoal to my substrate. My plants have been fine and not harmed by a titch of charcoal being added.
I moved my Hoya A. Lisa from homemade Pon to soil and it’s doing extremely well. Still have some plants in Lachuza Pon. My homemade Pon sucked. Good luck
I gave up on pon too Fern. And than I got fungus gnats and was watering wayyyy too much so I potted everything in no drainage pon and this go around, I’m way more happy with it because my plant care routine is way easier 🤍 Have fun on your vacation!!
Hey Fern Such a chill & relaxing Vid. OMG I hooted with laughter when I saw your socks on the pots my cat looked at me as if I’d gone crazy. Lol they look so cute and cosy. Haha 😂 I am having the same trouble with my Black Alocasia, I cannot seem to get past two leaves, it is so frustrating they just go over like your one has and then slowly dies off 😢 I so love this plant as well. When You was topping up your plants with that water bottle the noise of it made me want to go to the loo, I had to pause the vid Lol Sorry I know to much info. Haha Many thanks for the chill vid Fern, really enjoyed. You & Olive Tc xx 😘

By the way, I have a black velvet and from what I understand the corms can only support a certain amount of leaves depending on how big it is. Mine atp can do 4. I think it might be getting bigger, so I think it might hang on to five this time. I make sure when a new leaf is out it never gets dried out and it gets fertilizer! That's in hopes that it doesn't suck the energy from the oldest leaves. Black velvets are sad because of that, but people sleep on them. The price is really going down & there literally is no plant that looks like that. It's beautiful and elegant looking I would say. I just wish they would hold on to leaves more.
Hey girl ! I usually peel the black thing off of the bulb with tweazers to prevent rot and I think it helps with the roots 😊 Thank you again for the video ! I can't wait for my compacta to be as big as yours you literally made me fall in love with it 😍
Love a long plant chore video 😄 I havent used pon before but I transitioned a few hoyas that were in leca to chunky soil and they went nuts with growth. Hope thats helpful
Last month I transitioned a P Esmaraldense from pon to soil and it looks like it's doing well. I did the same with my painted lady a couple of months ago. Nothing special required. I like to grow Anthurium in pon but everything else is being transitioned back to soil.
Seeing your Alocasia Black Velvet’s progress made me want to give that plant another go. Mine died off during December, the leaves just started randomly browning and drying off. Don’t know if it was too much light or under-watering. Anyway, I will try again thanks to this video! Thank you!
Looks like the plants don't have a problem with the alge but you do. Maybe set the cups inside something so you don't have to see it. If you use perlite they transfer to soil easily. If your wanting to go to soil I'd grow tent or bag & keep moist till they are acclimated
I haven't tried pon but I will say I haven't been hearing great things about it. Algae being one. I pot most of my cuttings in a moss/chunky perlite combo and I keep them un that for a long time lol partially out of laziness and they seem to be doing great. My fl ghost however is in leca and though it's growing slow the roots are very healthy.
Hi Fern. I enjoy your video’s so much. They are so relaxing and informative. I am going to try the Orchard spray on my Hoya’s. Have a safe and relaxing trip. Thank you
Try put your black velvet in greenhouse! My pushed out BIG leaves and started to grow really fast after it lived in greenhouse. Now I’ve taken it out for space sake😂 it’s still doing well, tho growing a bit slower
I have come to realize that pon does better in some setups than others. I feel like the algae shows up much faster with better grow lights (which kinda makes sense) and it also depends on the plant. I have two of the same philodendron plants that came from the same pot. One is doing great in pon while the other I had to put back in soil. Just a thought 😊
You can try Hydro Grains with pond if don’t want to move to fully soil yet. Or just Hydro Grains in self watering pots. I have all my plants in soil. Never liked the pond method and the perlite method cause of the algae buildup and messy cleaning it off the roots. And just stick with sphagnum moss to root your plants.
Im gonna pick up the orchid spray to try out! Im already finding my plants are pushing out a bit more growth ....i think they are appreciating the little bit more sun put already. 🔆
hey fern! maybe try up-potting the black velvet? i had an alocasia that was always in the one leaf club (old ones die whenever a new one grows) and it started growing like crazy when i switched it to a bigger pot
Other than the one that broke off on its own, the corms are still immature and will do better attached to the mother plant for awhile. So I'm glad you left them for now. In another month or so, though, you can go to town with them!
Hi fern! I’m considering transferring some of my plants into pon/leca. Would you consider doing a video updating us on your plants you transferred over and if you would recommend? Thanks!
Unfortunately, foliar feeding doesn't work if it's done at night because the plant's stomata are closed. If you're afraid of burning your plants, my suggestion would be to do it right before or after lights off. :)
you are so pretty fern, loving the short hair! your hair is growing so fast too haha. I love see your propagations, it's exciting to see the progress, also watering! I feel like I need a whole video on heavy vs. light watering and signs of when to water for every plant (as a noob lol).
I prefer my plants in soil. I find the other methods to be messy and longer process to keep it maintain. Also i just need to repot my plants when they grow out of there nursery pots change fresh soil probably once a year and give nutrients over growing seasons. The pond it reminds me of a fish bowl when the algae gets build up and turn green and need to wash and clean before putting your fishes back. And sometimes it can smell bad. I guess everyone has there prefer methods and what they like there plants in.
Thanks for another amazing video! Since you mentioned the Jade Satin again, that silver splashing is actually reversion. I would try putting her in higher light 💚
Sounds exactly like mine. Her leaves are really large too. I have another leaf coming in and i’m really gonna cry if I lose a leaf in the meantime, but I was shocked that the self-watering worked for her
I think pon is great for building up root systems, but I personally find that my aroids do much better in a chunky soil mix overall. I get more, healthier leaves in their more "natural" mix.
You could do a thrift with me vid to find some cover pots to help with the algae ☺️ not that I don’t love the sock solution hah. We don’t really have too many thrift shops per say in the uk, usually charity shops (my fave) and antique stores so I’d be interested to see what’s near you!
I wish I could water my plants in the sink 😭 Here in Minnesota the water is much too hard and the minerals would destroy my plants. I have to use my filter spigot, which holds a limited amount in the reservoir. I can get through only about half of my collection if I water 2 or 3 times in a day, about 6 hrs apart. Wish I could just throw mine in the sink or shower like so many plant people do!
I transitioned two plants from pon to soil and honestly they are not adapting well. they seem to be thirsty constantly no matter how much I water them.
Fern : I'm not gonna make you watch me water 100 plants.
Me: wait I would love to see that though 💚🤣
hahaha 💚
I love how you make a list and show us how you cross things off! That’s one of the most satisfying parts of these chore videos!
The reason you have so much algae is because you have a clear pot inside a clear pot. The outer pot needs to be opaque to stop the light. I do most my chores in the evening, too. Just works out that way!

Ooh, I have and idea for your algae issue. You can still keep it in the clear cup, but have the "cover pot" be a red solo cup so it doesn't get light.
I have been loving the frequent uploads!♥
Hey girl! Also! That Orchid Spray!!! USE IT ONLY AT NIGHT/when sun isn’t shining on the plants !! THEY LOVE LOVE LOVE THAT MAGIC JUICE!!!!!

Always enjoy plant chores videos..hope your enjoy your trip 🙂
hahah right
I keep my black velvet in soil in self watering and it’s got 3 nice leaves on it. Let know if you have additional questions!
Sounds exactly like mine. Her leaves are really large too. I have another leaf coming in and i’m really gonna cry if I lose a leaf in the meantime, but I was shocked that the self-watering worked for her
@@marymiller5824 self watering is the only way I can keep alocasia alive!
i LOVE your hoya compacta! i can't wait until mine gets that big!
I think pon is great for building up root systems, but I personally find that my aroids do much better in a chunky soil mix overall. I get more, healthier leaves in their more "natural" mix.
Yeahhh new Video 🤗🥳
You could do a thrift with me vid to find some cover pots to help with the algae ☺️ not that I don’t love the sock solution hah. We don’t really have too many thrift shops per say in the uk, usually charity shops (my fave) and antique stores so I’d be interested to see what’s near you!
In my opinion Alocasia need a lot of fertilizer in order to push have more than a single leaf plus high humidity. That was working for me ☺️
Your sweater is cute!
What's in that pond stuff. It look pretty cool.
The heater doesn't come across very loud on the video, at least not for me.
Also I love the socks for the pon cups lol
Okay good to know lol!!
Hey Fern, how often do you spray your hoyas with the orchid mist? As always love the video!!🥰
I, too, change my clothes when I film two videos on the same day! 🤣
😄😄
I clicked so fast. I need some chill vibes rn.
How often do you spray your Hoyas with the orchid spray? I'd love to try that!!
Once every 1-2 weeks :)
Ohhh 😩 That sounds like a lot of work. You are very dedicated!
What percentage of humidity do you give your obliqua? Google says it needs 90% 🤷♂️? 💚
I transitioned two plants from pon to soil and honestly they are not adapting well. they seem to be thirsty constantly no matter how much I water them.
