- Sean and his college buddy Jared take two classic motorcycles from North Carolina to Pennsylvania. One of them is a 45 year old BMW R90 and the other is a Triumph Thunderbird Sport. Can they make it all the way home and avoid the classic motorcycle problems?
We buy hundreds of motorcycles a year, but one category of bikes that we try to avoid is custom motorcycles!

6:00 - That lady looks like she really needed something nice that day. What a great idea, this kind of thoughtfulness is rare. God bless youse
Yeah she did look like she wasn't even expecting it (who would?) and this mosdef looks like it has been the greatest thing that happened to her in a while.
+1 karma point Sean.

Mmmkmmmmmmmmkoo mmmmm oo
Sean.
I watched your channel several years ago when I was getting first motorcycles. Unfortunately I got busy with my life and grew away from both your channel and riding my bike often.
This year has been a nightmare for my family. Within 6 months both our baby boy and our 2 year old puppy passed away unexpectedly. I have been so lost the last 4 months and haven’t been able to figure out my life.
Last week I also lost an old friend that I haven’t seen for 6 years and while I was sitting in mass for his funeral, I felt safe and felt the feeling of belonging to something.
Your channel popped into my mind several days ago and I have been watching you everyday since. The way you shine your light on others has brought me joy and gets my mind out of these dark places.
Thank you for your therapy. I have begun riding my bike again, for the first time in 5 months. Now I am trying to save up for a project bike to work on to keep my mind busy.
God bless you and your family Sean!
I’m not religious but I do appreciate your kindness to strangers. Good feelings all around.
A good way to get to know god is to read the bible
@@nathanh3975 they probably don't want to considering they said they aren't religious lol
I feel that, I tend to skip past his prayers and stuff. But it is clearly part of who he is, so to each their own. Bible College sounds like a nightmare to me. Lol 😆
I think everyone should read the Bible regardless what you believe becasue everyone has an opinion on it and you can always tell there opinions are developed from parroting what other people say instead of actually reading it themselves.
You don’t look religious either
I'm planning a 4k+ mile trip on my dad's 67 triumph. Replicate a trip he took 50 years ago on this bike. Chicago, Canada, Seattle, California, then back. Hopefully I can pull it off.
I have a 68 and have over 4000 without a problem.Keep an eye on all your fluids and keep things tight.Very satisfying on old iron....
@@derekcollins1972 my dad put over 70k miles on this bike. TR6, Trophy?
@@jeffwestbrooke279 That's 4000 on the newly rebuilt engine.Its an earlier Tr6 frame with a 68 Bonnie engine.Ive owned it since I was 19 and I'm 47 now...I love those old machines.
@@derekcollins1972 Amal slide carb? Any issue hunting and surfing at idle?
@@jeffwestbrooke279 Yes,they can be a bugger to get a smooth long idle without setting the idle too high or blipping the throttle.Doesnt matter much because I never let it idle for very long.Other than that, they are good simple carbs.
I remember seeing those R-90s all over when I was a kid. Police in my country used them for more than 20 yrs. They where maintanied perfectly. Most cops who drove them for years, bought them from force when they got new BMWs. You can still randomly see them on the road. Great, old school bikes if they are maintained properly.
They're pretty common still here in Kokomo, IN, I have one (a '73 R75/5 long-wheelbase) and I see a few other people riding them every year. We had a very popular BMW dealer here in town that sold a lot of new and used airheads over a lot of years before switching to mostly used Harley stuff.
I'm a truck driver and frequent 81. I used to run a dedicated fedex load from Charlotte up to the Poconos 2x a week. Highway 11 has saved me so many times from sitting in heavy traffic. The way people drive on 81 is insane. I've often wanted to experience a ride up 11 and see all the cool places on a bike. You did it for me. God bless yall, stay safe.
That R90 was so good looking, but that dude really helped you out.
That guy is probably very happy about that deal
@@CC-os6df I think they both got the deal they wanted/needed. Both great bikes but the guys in a place where he can get it home and work on it, Seans in the middle of a trip and on a budget and can't afford to gamble on limping it home.
I read this comment before he broke down and I was so confused
A running r90, even with charging issues, is a 3500$ bike private party, easy.

That prayer was beautiful! 🙏🏾
I’m 13 and you guys got me into riding dirt bikes. I own a Suzuki rm-80d from 1983 the thing smokes more than a drunken stepfather.
Kid, that was so bad but so good. It was legend. Thanks, made me smile. Stay cool dude.
Bro how your parents let you have it.
13 too, mate don’t let people talk down on Suzuki, those are some of the most reliable bikes 🤟
Repair it. A new set of rings and a hone of the cylinders will tame it again unless its a two stroke. Then you have to live with it. If its high miles, go ahead and rering it itll make it burn a little cleaner.
Bri all i can say is if you like it ride it. Even if ppl tell you shit abt it
I rode my dads 1973 r75/5 with r90 dual plug heads and bing carbs from seattle to Jackson Michigan & then back a week later. I was 18 and just graduated.Great memories. Still have the bike.
The easiest way to test a charging system on any vehicle with an alternator, which the R90 has, is to start it up and then disconnect the battery. If the bike dies, it's the charging system. If it doesn't, it's the battery.
However I have read warnings about NOT disconnecting the battery on a running bike. Not sure what the issue is but I will be checking.
Many bikes have a shunt regulator that drains excess current from the alternator internally. Disconnecting the battery causes 100% of the alternator current to be drained within the regulator. This can overheat and burn out the regulator. Probably not an issue for a quick test when the bike is idling, but I wouldn't rev up the engine for a long time while disconnected. Newer regulator designs stop the alternator from creating current instead of draining excess current eliminating the overheat issue.
@@gregorytimmons4777 They claim it can spark and blow up the battery because it releases hydrogen gas.
I know you can take the battery out and push start the vehicle / crank it by hand ( I used to do it on a 70-ish renault 12 that had a place to put a crank under the front bumper ) it might work on a small old bike as well. So if the battery was dead on his bike he could have run that bike to hell and back if he didn't shut the engine so... his alternator is dead (or it might just need new brushes)
Why not just check the voltage with a meter with the bike running like you do on a car?
The next time you do the fill the gas tank for a stranger, I'm going to follow you in my RV. At 80 Gallons, that would be a pretty good deal.
I do wish I could have caught you guys when you were having alternator trouble. There was a simple solution - swap batteries between bikes. This would charge the other battery while you put some miles down. Once the battery got low again, swap them back. Just keep going back and forth until you get home. Trouble averted. Now that girl is never going to talk to you again.
Damn you're SO right. How did neither of them think about that solution ?
hahaha genious :D
Smart solution
BMW R/5s and R/6s were known for a couple of charging issues - the "brushes" on the alternator, and a rectifier bridge. My family belongs to a BMW motorcycle club, and nearly everybody with a /5 or /6 has gone through this.
Hello! This rings true to my 1981 R65. My bike drained the battery and the power stayed on even when I turned the bike off with the key. The kill switch however fell off several years ago so I was just running it without. They don't sell the "kill switches" ala cart so it looks like I would have to buy the entire throttle assembly. I don't want my first bike to have anything else but the original hardware. Any suggestions and thanks for reading!
Clicked for the r90...stayed after the prayer! Thank you guys for the great content and display of your faith, I’m encouraged.😎
I tour on my 1985 BMW R80RT which I bought new. 157k miles so far.
Good regular maintenence & keeping to the oil change specs is key. As is riding a bike per its design.
After 40 or so years, the electrics on any bike should be replaced or updated... wiring harness included. Insulation degrades no matter what.... unless it's just an unridden museum piece. Looking forward to another 40 years.... or leaving it in my will.
My daily commuter (in season) is my '82 Yamaha XS650 Special.
Pretty bulletproof bike. Parts are available & fairly cheap.
Nothing wrong with "vintage".
My dad told me that a machine doesn't know how old it is, but it does know how well it's been taken care of.
Totally agree, In September 2019, I rode my 1981 BMW R100CS from Montreal,Canada to Florida 2500km with zero issue.
"a machine doesn't know how old it is, but it does know how well it's been taken care of." , i love that .
Your dad is/was a wise man, and sounds like he and my dad would have gotten along!😀
10 years ago I rode my r75/5 from Northern Ireland to the ''playas' in Spain.
In the 8 days on the bike returning home I totalled 3030 miles, not kilometres, miles.
I ended up with nerve damage in my neck, and nerve damage in my feet !
Although riding through the Pyrenees early one sunny morning with a total stranger on a Yamaha tz race bike is something I will never forget.
Following him in the constant haze of 2 stroke smoke and fumes..... Unforgettable 😉
I took a road trip In the 70's from Penna. To New Hampshire on a 1967 750 Norton with my friend and his 650 Yamaha ,80 degrees when we left Penna., in the mountains of N.H. the temperature dropped to 50 degrees with constant rain for 2 days.We plunked out and got a motel till the weather cleared.(Make sure you have good rain gear).Snapped a clutch cable Rode 2 up found a Kawasaki dealer, matched the cable as best as we could, fitted the cable with a little help of electrical tape, helped us back to Penna. What a vacation.

That was really cool...I like that she said,"God bless you".
Helping random people out with gas money reminded me of a time in the 1970,s riding through the Australian outback. I was on a kawasaki triple and
Had broken down in the middle of nowhere about 100 miles away from Tennant creek. After waiting for 2 days
Some truckers stopped and took me and my bike to Tennant creek, when they
dropped me off at a motorcycle shop they gave me $100 cash which was quite a bit of money back then. It really
helped me out, something I have never forgotten.
I don’t even ride bikes but love watching you guys and especially love the verses in each video. Makes the hard days easy. Thanks for doing what you do.
I almost feel guilty about giving charitably because of how much it does for me.
You guys are great for helping people like that.
I can tell that doing so lifted your spirits as well.
Great ambassadors for the sport of motorcycling.
Bravo!!!
It seems to be a R90/6 not a /5. Planning to go to Barber's in AL in 2 weeks from Chicago with my 74 model.... Now I need to check things out. Thanks for the reminder! BTW I had the same charging issue a while ago. Needed new alternative rotor.
This video brought back a lot of fond memories of two BMW motorcycles I once owned. My 1970 R60/5 developed the same alternator trouble on a tour in 1975 as your R90/6. A helpful BMW dealer in Buffalo NY replaced it and it never gave me anymore trouble. That was the only trouble that old BMW ever caused me. Much later in 1989, I bought a 1974 R90/6 with a Butler/Avon full sport-touring fairing and Craven fiberglass panniers. That motorcycle was perfectly trouble-free. I bought both of these from Stan's BMW in Doylestown PA.

Greetings from Australia, I have a BMW R90/6 that I bought brand new in 1975, it has covered 168,347 kilometres and has never let me down, not once have I had to walk home or need a trailer to get it fixed. But punctures are a different story they are a pain in the arse on the side of the road when you are miles from nowhere.
It's a r90/6. Used to own one! Very reliable machines. No belt behind the cover! The generator is mounted directly on the crankshaft.
Thank you. I tried looking for a BMW R90/5 and BMW never made that model, (but I ran across this video while looking). 🤔 There was no R90 in the /5 series, only the R50/5, R60/5 and R75/5.
I've been to All-Sport. They hooked me up when my Ducati 1000 Sport was running funny when I drove up to Roanoke to start the Blue Ridge Parkway run to Asheville. I just could not get the idle dialed in the smokey mountains. Nice group of people. I think they were just happy to see something else besides Moto GP or Harley.
Nice trade. I got 650CS recently and after years of riding bigger 2 and 4 cilinder bikes while slowly starting to think a didn't really like riding anymore, I have the most fun on two wheels possible with this strange looking small BMW
If I had a R90 on my hands, I will walk that thing home. In Europe they will pay top $ for that bike ❤️
I think they would pay top €

Fabulous motorcycle adventure! What a joy sharing that ride with my Christian Brothers!! You guys are hallarious. The ending was superb!
Thank You Lord for our younger brothers! Keep on keepin’ on, young men.
That first woman that Sean filled her tank, you could tell how much it meant to her without even really filming her. I love it.
What sucks is that the guy who sold it to you knew it wasn't charging and didn't tell you
I see one of these R90s everyday on the bus home it’s one of those bikes that isn’t kept in aesthetically good condition but also mechanically maintained like you can see the all dust from the brakes all over the place and everything’s faded pretty cool bikes
Think Sean's on the Moonshine that's another repeat upload
thats what i was thinkin

Awesome video. I watched the other video(s) as well. The best part about what you two did was the kindness you showed to others. This, the scriptures, learning stuff, and your overall good-natured dispositions is what keeps me coming back.
That is wonderful that you two bought gas for strangers. Isn’t that the best feeling. God bless you both.
Such a fun light hearted engaging video. I just so appreciate your work.
That is awesome that you bless and are blessed by filling strangers gas tanks. Something we should all be inspired to do from time to time.

I almost choked watching the end of this video just now. Got him by a penny, Priceless! That Triumph would've made an awesome first bike for me I think. Love your channel from Miami. Just got my motorcycle license a couple of months ago, the class was awesome but I haven't pulled the trigger on a First bike yet. Hopefully watching your videos will give me the motivation a 50 year old like me needs to just do it! Btw that motorcycle jacket your friend threw away was a train wreck. I would've beat up on it like a red headed step child 😆 Jared in Miami.
So my brother and I have gotten inspiration from this video. We live in middle Georgia and we have decide to try to find some cheap bikes like you guys did. We want to find some and buy some off-road tires and take them up and ride the Appalachian trail. We do crazy stuff sometimes. We went to key west one year in a weekend and we recently rode to escoda Michigan and back in two days. It’s always been about the journey so we want this one to be awesome too. Also, to add I really like the fact that you do words of inspiration in your videos.

Just found this video. So envy you, my first bike was the 1975 R90/5 in blue. Have ALWAYS regretted selling it. Was surprised that you had an issue with the Beemer. My experience is that they always work and keep working.
You had a '75 R90/5??? In what country was that? '73 was the last year for the /5 series in the U.S. The /6 series is what followed as of '74.
I have stayed at that LaQuinta in Winchester. I was driving from Massachusetts to Southwest Virginia. I was towing a 1951 Oldmobile on a trailer behind a Uhaul truck.
