It was beautiful to watch this child demonstrate his skill and then, from youth age, watch the elder monk show the power of Shaolin dedication across time.
This is the greatness of Shaolin Temple- endurance, longevity, peace.

its not about how many people they can beat up. it's a beautiful art that requires extensive training and dedication. it should be given the respect it deserves.

I saw this show some few tears ago. Towards the end the eldest monk came out and during his performance stomped with one foot on the stage. The resulting boom and vibration were so powerful that they skipped the sound system back stage!

not this boy. he asked permission from his parents to send him to the Shaolin Temple when he was 5. After winning tournaments in his hometown when he was 4, he wanted to train more with the monks. He visited his parents every weekend. Some kids were orphans (maybe) but not most of them.

BEAUTIFULLY stated, kitsune511! Many forms exist for many reasons. Just because they are not full of fight moves does not mean they do not serve a purpose to an advanced martial artist and his or her body. The quality of life that this old man has as opposed to elderly Americans who must be helped the restroom is all the example I need to continue kung fu. People who take life too serious yet do not understand meditation and relentless practice would have a hard time understanding this video.

now what i find most interesting aside from the performance is the back story behind it. ends up that they are not truely the monks, just students ofthose learning under people who were training to be monks. i remeber watching it in a documentary and they brought up this show in it. aside from that very skillful

I had the privilege of seeing them on the Lolapalooza tour, way back in the day! LOL! but, they came out and did a demonstration with their spears, like some fruit ninja stuff! then they brought out a car onstage, and that young man (monk) put the blade to his throat, with the end of the spear on the front of the car, and pushed off the stage! the most impressive thing I've ever seen, and the Beastie Boys had to follow! Best show EVER!

Having done backstage work at some of these shows, while this is all 100% real, as soon as these guys get off stage after doing things like breaking metal or concrete with their bodies, they swear like crazy! Their skill lies more in their ability to control their bodies reactions, at least temporarily, to produce extraordinary results.

Actually Shaolin Kung Fu was used in war long ago.And just because they do amazing things doesen't mean it's "supernatural"."Supernatural" is just a term used to describe the things we can't fully understand, that doesn't mean it's divine or something,on the contrary it's completely natural.

Martial Arts do work in real fights, depending on how you use it. Once you learn about vital points, and how to use people limbs to your advantage, that is when it becomes real. For years before that you just perfect punches, kicks, and do simple training excercises.

The introduction of fighting skills at the Shaolin Monastery has been attributed to the Indian monk Bodhidharma (C., Ta-Mo), who came to the monastery in 527. The martial disciplines that have become a signature of the Temple were introduced to China by this Indian monk. As a member of the Brahmin class in India. He was very well versed in both Yoga and the south Indian martial art of Kalarippayattu.

the elasticity of their body is the absence of the trauma. A men who has lots of trauma (the energy doesn't flow normaly in body) has a very poor elasticity. A baby when is born is very elastic and loses this elasticity as he grow older and acumulates trauma. Sorry for my poor english. greetings from Romania :)

These Monks (and many on an even higher martial and disciplined scale) would more or less be trying NOT to kill their opposition IF it came to an organized fight. It would be like a cat playing with A toy.

I´ve seen a couple of clips where supposedly some shaolin monk fights with other fighthers. As far as I know that is not possible with an acting monk. They will not fight commercially. Only if they do not belong to the temple anymore.I agree that they can take anyone they want. People do not realize that these monks have started training when they were small kids , and all their lives.

  • @kitsune511

Most are, but these ones are not. Wushu does not have this level of skill, they possess external skills not internal. The way you can tell is that the old man (actually is in his late 70's) can still move with that degree of flexibility and ease. With modern Wushu, the body deteriorates over time without proper internal exercises.

Being Asian, I take your compliment to heart, thank you.
You have listed the worst of Western traits and the best of Asian traits. Unfortunately, the negative traits you have listed for Westerners, is becoming the norm in all parts of the modern world including Asia. Ideals of physical awareness and peaceful mind are quickly fading in our increasingly materialistic world.
That being said, there are many good things about Western culture and many bad things with Eastern culture.
