Yellowstone River Hike - January 30, 2024

- This is a hike down to the Yellowstone River on January 30. There is very little snow right now. No wildlife around but this is a great place to hike if you don't want snow or you don't want to worry about grizzly bears. This area does have a lot of cougars and I do show some cougar tracks. I also show the two types of evergreen (other than Juniper) trees that you will see along the river. Note - normally Whitebark pine trees grow at higher elevations (above 7,000 ft.) but I will show that Whitebark pine can grow at a low elevation of 5,400 feet.
The most enchanting hike of my life was the Tower to Mammoth, 18 plus miles. Toward the middle part, close to the river, and right along the trail, someone, long ago, had placed an elk antler in the crotch of a pine and the tree had grown around it. I still have that photo and it was the last one on my camera that day. Thanks for the memory.
A shocking lack of snow!
I’ve hiked along the Yellowstone River from the Tower bridge. I’ve seen bald eagles, otters, badgers, and even a lone bison
Oh yeah, I forgot to ask you about the house and barn at the end of your video, does anybody live there? I thought that maybe it was a hunters shack!
Take care.
They are just outside of the park and I don’t know the history of them.
@@StanMills Well thank you Stan, I sure appreciate the information! 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗
Thx for sharing! Really enjoy your videos!
Gee Stan, I was just really getting into your video then it ended. 😣
Did you ever get to see the gorgeous Cougar that left those beautiful prints?? That would have been such a treat if you had!
Thank you for sharing, take care!
Cougar tracks are hard to identify from wolf tracks, at least for me. I can only do it if the track is halfway good. I am pretty sure these are cougar tracks but it would be interesting to see what other people think.
@@StanMills Oh yes, I believe that these wonderful tracks are from a gorgeous Cougar for sure!! 😍 😚 😙 ❤ 💋 👄 🐈
@@StanMills One way to tell is if there are claw marks. With wolves you can see their nails. Cougar keep their claws retracted.
Great hike as usual Stan. Thanks for sharing. Is the whole park lacking snowfall currently ?
I think it is way below average. But I could be wrong.
Beautiful especially the river and the winter color palette is serene. Thank you for sharing :)
The picture video quality is outstanding… is that a new camera - perhaps 4K or greater?…. Great to see Yellowstone, Stan …. Unusually low amounts of snow in that area…
It is a GoPro 10
Stan was this inside or outsude the park?
It is both. The trail starts outside of the park.
Did you go from Gardiner down into park?
@@bruceburtner5418yes, at the Eagle camp ground above Gardiner.
If this lack of snow continues it's going to be one hell of a wildfire season.
Great walk. So beautiful.
Wow ,looks really dry , dose this area use to get a lot of snow .
Nice hike thankyou .
Wow, that's gorgeous.
Yikes, snow pack not looking to good
What a beautiful hike. Made even more enjoyable by the absence of ridiculous background music and having to listen to someone yammering on and on. Just the sights and sounds of nature. Well done sir.
Too bad I didn’t see any wildlife.
Thanks Stan
No carcasses this time? In an older video they were everywhere, between trailhead and Bear Creek. Different time of year of course. Great looking video Stan. Takes me back to the time I hiked it.
Not one carcass and I didn’t see even one animal. I did see bones from the same carcasses from last year. I will go back in later March and see how it has changed.
Thanks What were the buildings at the end of the video
Old buildings just outside of the park. I don’t know the history of them.
Do you ever get nervous of mountain lions? Have you ever come across one? Always interesting to think they're out there somewhere
No, I don’t get nervous of mountain lions. I never even see them.
What??? No lions, tigers or bears? How about the trout fishing?
I have never seen a bear in this area. But this is a good area for cougars.
What trail was that? Thanks for sharing! Beautiful!
The Yellowstone River trail.
Hey Stan can ya recommend a good spotting scope and camera for yellowstone?
Loook at the description section of this video. Thanks. ua-cam.com/video/JfadK6AIRk8/v-deo.htmlsi=HzLYC40bhCCooij1
Did that end up being mountain lion tracks?
Yes, I think so.
Hey Stan, I was reading an article published somewhere in Montana/Wyoming that stated some grizzly bears near and around YNP didn’t go into hibernation due to the lack of snowfall this winter. Would you happen to know anything about that? Any validity to that?
I have not heard that. But remember, it is not the snow that makes them hibernate, it’s the lack of food source. And, bear sightings happen every month of the year. Personally, January is the only month of the year that I have not seen a bear or signs of one. I have not seen any bear signs myself so far this year.
Thanks for the reply, Stan. Always enjoy your videos.
Beautiful!

brings back old memories. that was a raven playing with the eagle. love your adventures
We need to support all farms worldwide
What do you mean?
❤❤👍👍👌👌✌✌😊😊
Beautiful video. Lack of snow ominous.
Do cougar tracks alarm you at all?
Not at all. Always makes me happy to see them, which I don’t see very often.
What a beautiful hike on a fantastic winter day. Thank you.
Sometime provide a list of one day hikes. I come to the park usually in September for a few days and like to get away from the crowds and see new places each year.
Thanks🎉
All trails can be day hikes. For example, hike out a certain number of hours, say 4 hours, and then turn around and come back.
wow no snow at all! 😳
This area never gets much snow. But there should have been more higher up.
@@StanMills oh ok nice to hear that sir
Thank you so much for sharing & wish you the best sir. 🤝🏼🦌🌲🐻
NIce.
Do they allow drones in there?
No, not allowed in any National Park.
No drones in wilderness areas or national parks. Ruins the wild experience with drones flying all around. Can't take a piss in the woods in most of the lower 48 anymore without being on a trail camera or drone someone is flying. Even the gym. Everyone wants to take selfies and videos while your trying to workout you end up on social media.
Yup...
Thanks
Not much snow, pray for moisture in Jesus name!
@0:55 THAT is not a bald eagle: it's a vulture.
Interesting. You could be right. It was still too dark to see it clearly. Thanks
Maybe you need a better monitor? It's clearly a bald eagle on mine. @mylovedwildanimals8520
I believe the first Eagle is a Bald Eagle, at 0:38. The white head is pretty clear in parts of the video. However I believe the bird with the crow (raven) appears to be either a golden eagle, a red-tailed hawk, or it could be a turkey vulture.
Without a doubt, the first scene shows a Bald Eagle because (1) it has a white head and tail. The lighting is difficult to tell in the second scene, but it's most likely the same Bald Eagle. (2) The Turkey Vulture's wing span would show a V-shaped wing span while gliding. The wing span here looks level (as Bald Eagle). (3) Turkey Vultures migrate to southern parts in winter. They would not normally be any where near Wyoming in mid-winter. Black Vultures generally stay way south in the U.S. all year round. (4) It's rare for crows to bother a vulture in flight, as there is no need since vultures are almost exclusively carrion eaters.
