Was hoping to hear about that comparison as well. Plus there was the Xbox one release which I’m not sure if that would follow close to the PS4 release or if it was just a 360 copy burned onto a new disc and put in an Xbox one case?
@@LoneWolf1985BK There've been like 3 dozen of those reprints (they're stupidly expensive collector items now), but I don't think Veronica is one of them. I'm glad someone pointed out the ghosting in the ps2 version of the game. When playing that version on my ps4 I thought I was going crazy when seeing Claire smudge her way across the screen.
Fun fact: The Xbox 360 version of CVX has the word "Herb" misspelled as "Harb" for the mixed herb item in the battle mode. As far as I can tell, this is the only version that has this typo. This continues the trend of typos in resident evil. Other notable typos being the "Mugnum Parts" in re2, "Revelaitons" in the Re Revelations, and "William Barkin" in a blood stained letter in Re0. (The blood stained letter is partially illegible and some letters are missing in the transcript, so the written text is "Will m Bark" so it could say something all together but the capital letters imply a name.)
The biggest issue regarding the difficulty was that brand-new players really don't know "when the end of a section" is coming up. So it's very easy to lose several weapons for a portion of the game when switching from Claire to Chris, then lose them *permanently* if you load Claire up for her second section. I personally didn't have an issue with it because I was a kid and used a strategy guide, but someone who isn't familiar with the game might fall into that trap.
I happened to not be able to use Claire's weapons for Chris and it worked fine, Chris already had his Glock and Shotgun, I didn't felt the game was too hard like people said, the developers knew about this possibility and balanced the game so that it would obviously be harder without a weapon like Grenade Launcher, but not impossible or unfair, just gives an extra challenge, that's what I felt when I first played.
@@theinsp3ctor368 i noticed that in the beggining, but then I realize the game gives you a lot of ammo, so It's better to just kill instead of taking risk of taking damage.
@Veit Vazmei It's more of an issue that it CAN happen. Especially to new players and you really have no way of knowing about it coming up. It's shoddy design for a player to have a shared inventory between characters and not know when that switch is going to occur.
Back in the 2000's my brother and I used to hang around with a group of friends from the first highschool I joined when we moved, and we'd have sleepovers on weekends at one of these guys place who owned one of the two Dreamcast consoles in our village. We all took turns playing CV and Phantasy Star Online while discussing ideas on a JRPG we wanted to make and me falling asleep without fail whenever they all watched Final Fantasy The Spirits Within. Good times! Thanks for the upload and bringing back those memories, Jared! PS: Played a lot of Spawn In the Demon's Hand on the second Dreamcast console on the village owned by some kids from an acquaintance of my parents.
36:42 What you're seeing there is something I think Sony was very proud the PS2 could do. There's a ton of games in the PS2 that use that extremely heavy motion blur effect. It's pretty awful, and I never thought it looked good, even when seeing the game on a CRT. As someone who has both a PS2 and a Gamecube, if a game is on both consoles, I always go with the Gamecube version, because there's a high chance the PS2 version will have this awful motion blur.
The music at the end was provided by Mono Memory (ua-cam.com/video/0PsbEiC9J5k/v-deo.html) and I would really recommend checking out their Re and SH synth covers. They are incredibly good!
They also did a nice cover of the Save Room music from Dino Crisis. Both songs are available for digital purchase on Amazon. So are a few classic Resident Evil soundtracks like: RE2, RE3, and RE4. No official soundtrack for: RE1, RECV, or Dino Crisis. :(
Having had a youtube account for years, there's very few channels/creators that get me hyped when I see a new video has dropped. Jared and Avalanche Reviews are one of the few that does and probably always will
@@theslanderousgent4475 That's understandable given that it's a lot more popular. It would have been nice to have them in a chronological order though, since CV takes place before 4. But I'm starting to doubt they'll even make a CV remake.
I never even considered the A/V and port perspectives when it comes to game reviews it’s usually just about story and direct mechanics. Glad someone’s focused on the technical details!
Dude I just beat CV a month ago, it's a real treat seeing you cover all it's ports here! I'll never understand the hate CV gets, I think it's fantastic outside of its subpar unlockables!
It's not just 2 extra scenes either, they also altered the scene where he fights Alexia to be less one sided and he notices Chris is in the room, instead of him running away without seeing him in the original, still not a huge thing like you said, but just getting something you missed
Yeah, I mentioned this in his original CV retrospective review -- the biggest and most important difference for me (experience-wise rather than gameplay-wise) between the two verions is how Wesker isn't a little bitch in CVX like he is in the original DC version, also re-recorded lines w/ Richard Waugh to get Wesker to sound far more like his "cold, calculated" persona in RE4/0/UC -- than the dramatically hammy supervillain one. I get it kinda undermines the "power" of Alexia to put them on equal footing, but, considering how she's probably the easiest boss in the franchise and how irrelevant CV overall becomes to any future game other than Darkside Chronicles (compared to Wesker, being a badass for the next decade). I'd rather play the one that has the cool Matrix fight -- not to mention the whole extended ending.
@@ThePatchedVest RECV wasn't irrelevant for future entries. It's actually one of the more important entries as it starts the Chris vs Wesker feud that plays a heavy role into RE5's story.
@@the757general2 You misunderstood my comment. I'm referring to everything else that happens in the game ASIDE from Wesker's reanimation (which in non-X versions of CV is a really tiny portion of the overall story, since he never interacts with Claire and disappears entirely after running away from Alexia). The whole t-Veronica/Ashford plot is never revisited in any future game outside of DSC's Operation Javier, Steve is never brought back as Wesker claimed in CVX, etc.
I think most people refer to the bosses, when it comes to difficulty. You either had a ton and a half worth of explosives on hand or you were in for the fight of your life!
They definitely can be annoying, but if even if you've killed every zombie in each area, you should still have enough hard hitting ammo to take them out with ease. I mean, I always have.
@@AvalancheReviews I still remember struggling with that Tyrant fight, between the tank controls, confined space and camera, trying to evade and take pop shots at him it took me dozens of tries.
Another great video from Jared. I remember noticing the ghosting/blur effect on CV's PS2 port when I first played it back in '08. Wasn't until I emulated the DC port on my phone last year that I realised how cleaner it was.
I will never get enough of your thorough port coverage 👍 I miss not having more distinct variations ( or just variations ) in the separate console editions ( also we had 'editions' that meant more than 'your' console simply getting a stupid hat, digital ).
I've never heard anyone complain about Code Veronica, so that's news to me for sure. This is the best game in the series for me, nearly tied with REmake. I understand everyone loves RE 2 the most, but it just feels sort of like in the Silent Hill series where everyone always has so much nostalgia for SH 2 that they don't see that SH 1 and 3 are better games in a lot of ways.
Sweet Boulder Punching Chris on a Jill Sandwich! New vid!!! You’ve rapidly become one of my most favorite content creators! P.S thank you for the kind words on your RE 1.5 stream!
Code Veronica is the remake that should happen. Its story is the best and covers more lore than RE4 (which is stand alone really) so a remake would make so much sense.
Glad you mentioned the PS2 "blurred motion" effect. I've always noticed it, and it exists even on a CRT so it is part of the video output. Inexplicable, and does make the motion in other versions seem smoother and nicer by comparison.
I don't think it's inexplicable. It just looks like motion blur, which was very common on PS2, because it was much better at dealing with alpha effects than the other consoles at the time. Granted it looks very strange by todays standards of motion blur, but back in the day that was seen as an advantage, not a detriment.
@@cosmiczeppelin I think it's a strange effect as applied to even trivial motion such as a drawer opening and is strange even in comparison to its contemporary ports on other consoles.
Cannot be understated how amazing this game looked at release 🤯. Had all friends jealous of my Dreamcast. Also, really cool the VMU showed your health without accessing menu. Poor teenager me rented this game so many times, I could've just saved to buy it 🤣. Finally saw the credits years later. I think it's my favorite RE entry. I did run into a glitch in GCN port in final boss battle. I couldn't push the crate. Had to back track to last save. Worked 2nd time. Oh... & eff poisonous moths 🦋🦋🔥🔥
The shadowing ghosting effect thats in the entire game of the ps2 version is i think some early version of motion blur, and its something i have seen in a bunch of games for the ps2, silent hills used it heavy, couple of final fantasy titles, list goes on. I think its an effect that is utilized and built into the GPU drivers for thr ps2
There's a whole generation who didn't play the OG RE and base their opinions on UA-cam videos. Some other youtube must have said RECV BAD and they just spout it.
First time i played CV was in the HD port on the 360 (which ill assume applies to the PS3 edition seen here). @@AngraMainiiu He's trolling. There isn't a noticeable difference between the two games outside of controller preference. The fact that CVXHD is backwards compatible makes it more accessible than the PS3 version especially with the PS3 store closing later this year.
I've been playing CV for years using Dolphin and it looks amazing, it also runs perfectly and you can use the controller of your liking. I know you hate emulators Jared but IMHO this is the best way to experience the game in HD.

@Por Qué? It's still considered the true 3rd game, everyone internally saw it so and Capcom seems to treat it as such anytime it's brought up in retrospect. Nemesis would technically be the spin off, it was only titled 3 because of a contract obligation with Sony to put one more main RE game on the Playstation before the end of it's life cycle. Agreed on 4 though lol, I was confused as hell for a hot minute when it was first announced, like "wait, shouldn't this be 5?"
Code Veronica X did get a release on the Dreamcast. It was Japan only, but easy to play as the menus are easy if you've played an RE game before. Love this game and loved this video
I LOVE your RE reviews. I hope one do you'll do all the Tomb Raider ones as they are all a massive part of my PS1,2,3 &4 experience. Only you can give a thorough and thoughtful retrospective.
Since 1996 I have played almost all RE games on multiple consoles, but I will never forget how much Code Veronica impressed me on the Dreamcast! To this day, I consider CV one of the best games in this series and Dreamcast is my favorite console ever :) Great video 👍

I think the ghosting effect you are referring to is "trails" and you see it in a lot of PS2 games. See GTAIII for the more extreme examples of this. I always noticed it in CVX on PS2 so i know exactly what you are on about.
I don’t comment often enough on this channel, but all of your content is some of the best on UA-cam. As a Resident Evil fan I couldn’t ask for a better series of videos than this retrospective.
Given how great the backwards compatibility program on the MS side of things has been, I'm inclined to believe that version could be the best port by a mile. Surprised it wasn't mentioned!
@@12ealDealOfficial it should be basically the same as the PS3 port, but the surprising bit was that not even the 360 was mentioned in that section of the video.

Gotta say, if you decide to cover RE4's versions, you'd better say nice things about the toaster version, that's my personal fave version :D
Code Veronica was my first Resident Evil game. And with that came an emotional attachment, I love this game with all of my heart, and more than every other game in the franchise. It's just something about it, I still remember when I first gained control of Chris. I remember being 11 and finishing the game alongside my younger brother. Everything about this game just screams home to me and I can't explain it. It's what got me into all of Resident Evil. And I went from 10 playing RECV to 19 and speedrunning RE3 attempting a top 100 time. Seeing this video by my favorite RE content creator and talking about my favorite game in my favorite series are just a combination of peace. Thank you avalanche for all that you do for the RE community
I believe the difficulty comes in for those that linger a little too long in early areas. Zombies tend to respawn in many halls or harder worse monsters replace them, potentially.
Excellent stuff as always and I'm with you with the CV love even if I've never been good at as it really is the hardest RE in my opinion but I'm surprised you didn't cover CVX on Dreamcast, especially as the writing is now translated. All the good of the Dreamcast visuals with the extras of CV.
Wish I knew about that tyrant trick when I first played it, I had to start the whole game over cause I got completely stuck with what I thought to be not enough ammo
I really enjoyed this entry. I remember being thoroughly impressed with the graphics, loving the bizarre plot and the equally bizarre villains (I like how each Ashford twin has their own fucked up issues and Richard Waugh is the best Wesker, don't @ me), and that intro was pure awesome. Plus, this was the game that convinced me to get a Dreamcast, and for that I will be forever grateful.
I put PlayStation 2, & this Resident Evil game on my Christmas List back in 2001 when I was 10 years old. My dad didn't buy me Code Veronica for Christmas but, I sure was lucky that he bought me as PlayStation 2 during that time. A few months later my oldest brother bought Code Veronica, & I watched him play it. When he played as Chris on there, the poor fella had to start a new file. His health was in the danger zone, he had no health items on him, & a dag gum Hunter kept on killing him. Safe travels to you, & your wife on the move to Japan.
Oh man, I know exactly how you feel when you notice tiny graphic issues but everyone else doesn't seem to notice. I am always quick to notice such issues and also get a bit distracted by them. Probably due to, but not only because of, me having done a lot of computer graphics programming and UI, both in studies and professionally for game dev. Once you have spent 100s of hours looking for pixel and color differences between images you just keep noticing this stuff.
I stopped the video at the 7:20 just to say that I appreciate your channel and others like you that know history of game's, know where we've come from and appreciate the finer nuance's of older title's. In this world of life-like graphics and 4K, HDR resolution, it's nice to just remember the day's and game's of certain era's. Back where we marveled at the number of polygons on screen and the number of bits a system had. 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. Those were the day's. With all the amazing game's we have now and I have most of them, Shenmue, Sleeping Dog's, Hydrophobia and Spec Ops: The Line are still my favorites. Having most of the PS1 era game's on my PSP and Vita and playing Donkey Kong Country and other's on Switch keeps me grounded and reminds me to appreciate where we've come from. 👁️
Code Veronica is the “black sheep” of the series?? First I’ve heard of that, I mean when the game originally released it was critically acclaimed by most of the gaming press, easily the best game in the series up to that point. They called it the game that RE3 should’ve been considering RE3 was more of a side story to RE2.
@@RandoLePerson well I wasn’t talking about the recent RE3 & RE2 remakes, I was talking about the originals from 25 years ago, these days RE3 remake would be considered DLC but 25 years ago DLC didn’t exist really.
@@RandoLePerson Not technically true. The story is actually even more complicated. RE2's production led to a creative dispute between Hideki Kamiya and Shinji Mikami, leading to Mikami taking a backseat from further production on "numbered" RE games. Kamiya then got the go-ahead to make Resident Evil 3. His concept was a game starring HUNK on a Cruise Liner trying to regain a G Virus Sample. Mikami meanwhile focused on Dino Crisis and helping porting teams. Specifically, RE2 on the Saturn. However, that port ended up being too hard to develop and was scrapped. To make up for it, Capcom greenlit a Dreamcast RE game to give Sega fans something to chew on. Mikami took a much closer role in that production and had RE1 Team Veterans take over the production. In a way, Kamiya and Mikami were both making their own RE3s, though Kamiya's was the one officially getting the number at the time. However, Kamiya's RE3 ended up being canned due to constant scenario rewrites as well as ironically enough Kamiya and Mikami mending their professional relationship and both agreeing Kamiya's RE3 just wasn't working. Thus, there was a void for the next mainline RE game. Code Veronica began to be referred to as 3 internally because it was so much of a grand next step. Unfortunately, Capcom Higher Ups thought releasing 3 on the Dreamcast while 1, 2, and 4 (Which Kamiya had already been conceptualizing. His RE4 of course became Devil May Cry) were all on Playstation systems would be a disaster. They couldn't call the next Kamiya game RE3 because then there would be too big of a wait between 2 and 3, they needed 3 sooner rather than later. At the same time as all of this, there was a spin-off known as "Biohazard 1.9" in development by Capcom's B-Team. On the PS1. Capcom Higher-Ups told that team to make it into a numbered game with very little time. Then the story continues as we all know. Mikami got sick of the formula and made his RE4, then he left, then him and Kamiya made Vanquish, then nobody played Vanquish, which is a shame because Vanquish is really goddamn good, the point is play Vanquish.
@@RandoLePerson RE7 doesn't really fit into that. RE4-6 are full on action yes. RE8 falls into that middle ground between both, but RE7 is almost identical to RE1 in structure. In fact, it's a little less action-y than even the classics since RE7 barely has any regular enemies for the first half of the game, it's almost all exploration and avoiding the boss characters (Who operate on Mr X/Nemesis logic).
I'm playing this right now, but I'm stuck in Chris's chapter trying to figure out how to set the self destruct sequence to save Claire from a locked room.
Time for another complete nerd out! Really appreciate your videos, watching has swayed me to finally revitalize my old consoles from the attic and play through some of these gems again, so thanks, I guess. Best of luck with move to Japan!
CV:X was the first RE game I played. I played it when I was quite young, and something about it didn't really click for me, but I could tell there was something to this series I could get into. I later tried RE4, fell head over heels for the series, and eventually came back to Code Veronica X. As such, while it wasn't the game that ignited my passion for RE, it was the one that led me to the game that did, and will always have my gratitude
Code Veronica is incredibly underrated compared to the other old REs wich is strange because it is the longest and one of the most challenging of the classic games
The transition with Alfred Ashford, wailing as you bring up the PS2 version cracks me up...... Mainly because as a 13 year old I had the DC version, my friend bought the PS2 version when it dropped and the wail from Alfred was my inner response to seeing it on PS2. 🤣
Code Veronica is arguably the best RE. It is in my opinion. I'm a old school guy, I love RE1, 2, 3, Code Veronica, & the old school RE experiences. Granted, 7 kind of recaptured that magic but the old REs are second to none & out of all the great older REs I think Code Veronica is on top of that prestiges mountain.
Great video! A few things that some may find interesting. The blur on the PS2 version is likely an interpolation technique to try and clean up the image since the PS2 didn't support anti-aliasing in hardware. Also the PS4 version isn't a port of the PS2, it is the PS2 version running on their PS4 emulator of the system. The emulator allows some subtle changes, such as the addition of trophies. The emulated game is then packaged as an actual PS4 game. Last, while the darkness and black crush issues of the HD remaster are well known, this is actually largely improved playing on the Xbox Series X/S while using auto-HDR. I wonder if the blur filter is only applied on the PS3 version because image looks more raw on the 360 version. I also wonder how much of the visual changes to the HD remaster are due to them porting the game to Capcom's MT Framework engine, the same engine RE5 and RE6 use. Appreciate these types of videos, thanks for making this!
I only avoid them in games where it affects your rank... even if I'm not going for a S / A Rank that run. Kinda a contradiction there I know. I will use them say in RE4 though.
Also, Steve is such a doofus. People have been saying that if they do a remake, they should make him around 15 yrs old. Cause a teenager who's being weird around a girl he's attracted to, while saying & doing moronic things he thinks are cool in order to try impress her would have everything about his character make perfect sense

At this point I just hope this series never ends.
At this point I hope you do
I’ve never understood why everyone goes nuts for Wesker. He’s a good villain but I don’t pee myself from excitement every time he’s mentioned.
Very Excited I Love the Resident Evil Retrospective I found it about 6 Months and Ago and Just Watch The Video on Outbreak
Did they cover the RE1 basement music??
They also did a nice cover of the Save Room music from Dino Crisis. Both songs are available for digital purchase on Amazon.
So are a few classic Resident Evil soundtracks like: RE2, RE3, and RE4.
No official soundtrack for: RE1, RECV, or Dino Crisis. :(

Always love hearing Jared say ‘welcome to the Resident Evil...Retrospective’, sounds like he says it with a smile 😊
You're super flamboyant
You're breaking some kind of world record for great content of this volume released in such quick succession.
And the X version was released for the DC...in Japan
@@Jose-se9pu There's a fully complete English translation of X for Dreamcast. English voices, cinematics, everything.
The whole t-Veronica/Ashford plot is never revisited in any future game outside of DSC's Operation Javier, Steve is never brought back as Wesker claimed in CVX, etc.
im so thankful u mentioned the darkness of code veronica x. reddit told me it was my tv BUT I KNEW BETTER. thx for the validation 😀
I will never get enough of your thorough port coverage 👍
I miss not having more distinct variations ( or just variations ) in the separate console editions ( also we had 'editions' that meant more than 'your' console simply getting a stupid hat, digital ).
Man you are a brown nose 😂
"In no means am I an expert"
**Cuts to clips of him expertly bobbing and weaving**
Jared, you messege at the beginning and what you said is exactly why I love your reviews.

I get that a lot. I'm starting to think my eyes might be a little different than most. HA!
Definitely took some time to get used to, but those bleeding bright colors and enhanced lighting sources are the way I remember it best. It's weird how this is the only mainline entry in the series without a PC port
Emulation exists
@@trblemayker5157 They ported Zero and REmake to PC years later, why leave out CV?
@@father042 Because Capcom back then and now still doesn't give a damn about pc players. Look at RE Village with no performance patches or fov slider.

The HD remaster of CV through backwards compatibility on Xbox series X looks really great.

No xbox 360 port? Its also backwards compatible on xbox one. Yeah its one of my favorite RE titles as well
Code Veronica was my first Resident Evil game.
I'm happy to make this stuff, and it's nice talking to people who love this game too. We're in the minority for sure.
It really sucks that you don't have a Series X to test out CV with upscailed 4K, Auto HDR and Anisotropic filtering!
This is by far my all time RE game ever. Superb hard puzzles, excellent story and great level design.
I believe the difficulty comes in for those that linger a little too long in early areas. Zombies tend to respawn in many halls or harder worse monsters replace them, potentially.
6:50 I was actually blown away with how good the lighting looks after recently binging through RE1, 2, 3 & 1.5 blind.
Wow, I have not seen that original Leonardo DiCaprio esque Steve model in years.
The ghosting in the PS2 port looks like an early attempt at motion blur.
All OG reviews heaped tons of praise on the game. Now it's barely talked. It's weird.
the ps2 version only does 480i, where as the dreamcast version outpus 480p via VGA. that's why you see ghosting effect on the ps2 ver.

CV:X was the first RE game I played. I played it when I was quite young, and something about it didn't really click for me, but I could tell there was something to this series I could get into.

That's the right reaction!
Thank you! I rarely see such deep analysis, and you're the Go To... Good luck my friend.
CVX HD on the Series X looks and rums great.
The ps3 hd port has better background visuals being more brighter, the ps4 port though being extremely dark has better character models
You know at this point I'm not surprised you of all people would make a video dedicated to this underrated gem
I thought I was the only one who avoids using first aid sprays no matter what😂. Glad I'm not alone lol.
I only avoid them in games where it affects your rank... even if I'm not going for a S / A Rank that run. Kinda a contradiction there I know. I will use them say in RE4 though.
I just collect them thru the game lol, and use health glitch
i only played the game very recently and i loved it. hope they give it the remake treatment.
Also, Steve is such a doofus. People have been saying that if they do a remake, they should make him around 15 yrs old. Cause a teenager who's being weird around a girl he's attracted to, while saying & doing moronic things he thinks are cool in order to try impress her would have everything about his character make perfect sense
They already fixed Steve in Darkside Chronicles
My second fav resident evil. Only behind number 2. Scared me to death as a child.
i would definitely like to see your point of view about The Evil Within franchise
people keeps saying they are pure survival horror, the comeback of the genre while they are more like action horror
I think stealth mechanics in horror hinders the horror aspect too, though that works well in the open sandbox areas of the 2nd game.
Well the first one is excellent, not a fan of the open world direction the sequel took
