Hey y'all, just wanna throw this here because a lot of people are getting the wrong idea with this one. A lot of people are getting the impression that I didn't enjoy this game, and my writing with this video definitely could've been more clear, but that is absolutely not the case. If you stick through to my conclusion, I still really enjoyed the game. I just think that it has some problems that the MGS games before it didn't have, and I wanted to dig into those and get a discussion started on them. Like I said, I should've conveyed that more throughout the video so that people didn't get the wrong idea, but unfortunately I was only able to see the script from my own perspective, and didn't foresee that it would be perceived that way. Regardless of whether you agree with my opinions or not, thank you for taking the time to watch my stuff! I love having the discussion, but let's make sure to keep it respectful so that everyone can feel welcome to participate 🙂
@@NeoMoonSevinNo lol. MGS3 is the best one period. The first is the next best. I’m fairly sure 99 percent of people would agree this is the best one of them all. Hell I nearly got tears in my eyes at the end killing the boss. That’s amazing. Not to mention the sniper battle with the end which was freaking awesome
The ladder length isn't for loading, its contextual to the story. You're ascending up a mountain. The ladder is meant to make you take in exactly how far you're going up. Its the same reason why after a while you start to hear strong winds the closer you approach the top.
One thing you may have missed because a lot of the lore is hidden in random codec conversations: It is hinted heavily in the codec conversations with Eva that the child the Boss had with the Sorrow during WW2 and then taken away from her by the Philosophers is actually Ocelot himself. What's not really hinted at is whether the Boss was aware of this the whole time. Depending on what you believe, it does put an interesting light on the few interactions they had in the story. It also puts an interesting light on the relationship between Big Boss and Ocelot being the adopted and biological sons of The Boss.
This is actually confirmed in the MGS4 Database. But Kojima leaves it ambiguous whether The Boss figured out Ocelot was her son or even if Ocelot knew. Furthermore the Database states that EVA was trained at a Charm School where The Boss was an instructor. Which clears up why EVA also seems close to The Boss.
I listen to a lot of the CODEC calls while I play these, not obsessively trying to get every last one, but stopping after most major events for a quick check. I seem to have totally missed that one though 😅 Definitely makes their rivalry throughout the game more interesting 🤔
Yup... It was hinted that he was. Ocelot (Adamska) was born on D-Day, and his mom gave birth to him on the battlefield via C-Section. The Boss gave birth to a baby boy at Normandy during Operation Overlord (D-Day)... and has a big snake shaped scar on her chest from the emergency operatiom, performed on the battlefield, to save her & the baby's life.
It did I’m 40 now and that was the game I bought when I was 20 😞 not to mention subsistence had the first metal gear online. It was actually the first online multiplayer I ever played
2 things worth mentioning: Your health bar increses when you let your injuries heal for themselves. And the Eva escort part, you have to press the action button to tell her to follow you
@@notcole another thing you might have missed on first playthrough is non-lethal takedowns of bosses give special camouflage as rewards. These camps bestow a unique ability, for example the Fear's camo give an impressive camo index but depletes stamina, while the Fury's reduces fire damage, and so on
@@notcoleIf you ever replay MGS3, first of all play Subsistence not Snake Eater. But play on a harder difficulty and fight the bosses non-lethally. Also, remember to call everyone on the codec frequently if you want the massive lore dump version of MGS3. I think there's even a unique codec call for every single plant and animal you can eat in the game... there's a lot.
A few things I enjoyed with The End boss fight. You can completely avoid the fight by killing him when they're on the docks if you get into position and shoot fast enough. You can set your Playstation settings time for a later date and he will actually die of old age. You can shoot his bird and really piss him off.
cool thing about mgs3 is freedom of choice how to do with enemy that why it might be easy in someway if you figure it out i find it positive more than negative
You can also capture the bird and eat it (you monster. If you do, talk to Paramedic. It's hilarious). If you release it after capturing it, it will fly away towards The End, giving away his position.
So this game has a lot of its content in optional Codec calls. Instead of the death monologues, you get a lot of the information about the bosses through contact with Major Zero, Sigint, and so on. In fact, there are so many important details in these Codec calls, such as the game hinting at Ocelot being the son of The Boss and The Sorrow, which is why in MGS4 he looks a lot like The Sorrow. Other things like how Volgin and Raikov have a gay relationship, and some of the accolades of the Boss and the Cobra Unit during WWII. As for the boss fights, the game seems to be a lot easier, as you said, and I think the "Hard" difficulty is supposed to be the "Normal" difficulty. The other fun thing about this game is that most of the bosses can be fought in CQC instead of with guns, and playing this game while using non-lethal for all the bosses makes the game so much more fun. The Volgin and Boss fights using only CQC makes the game, especially on "Extreme" into a tense, fun series of fights. Anyways, the nice thing about the additional details in the Codec calls is that you can choose to take them in to get more information on the whole universe, but they're not required to understand the main storyline of the game. And I think this did a great job balancing the amount of cutscenes in the game versus gameplay, which some of the games in the series (get ready for 4) do a terrible job in doing.
Almost like the game should have MADE THE FUCKING CALLS MANDATORY. Beat the game knowing NOTHING about ANYTHING because they thought that making the story optional was a great idea. THE ENTIRE BUILD UP OF THE BOSS IS IN THE TUTORIAL AND YOU CAN SKIP IT ALL
Let's talk about dem bosses. First and foremost I'm not gonna say you fought them wrong. Whatever way nets you a victory is a right way. That being said, there is definitely a way the game wants you to fight these bosses, non-lethaly. Not only is the challenge for non-lethal takesdowns greater, to me at least, but going non-lethal also nets you special camos that all have bonuses tied to them. Ocelot: defeating him non-lethally gets you the Animal camo which will cut down on your hand trembling if you have low stamina. For some extra fun, you can shoot off his hat, or the beehives above him for some free hits. Plus if you stand next to the cliff edge with a pistol drawn he'll challenge you to a quick draw duel. The Pain: Beating him non-lethally gets you the Hornet Stripe camo which makes all bees, leeches, spider, and scorpions ignore you. Unfortunately I don't really have any fun tips or tricks for his boss fight but you seemed like you enjoyed that one anyhow. The Fear: The name of the game is stamina, his will deplete constantly forcing him to hunt for food. You can sabotage this by throwing out rotten or poisonous food to force him to throw up, costing him more stamina. In addition taking a fake death pill will cause him to come check on you before he lowers his guard, giving you a free shot, or instant kill if you have a stun grenade and the AK. He drops the Spider camo when beaten non-lethally, giving you and automatic 80% camo index at the cost of high stamina drain. The End: Uniquely you DON"T get his camo via non-lethal win, you do get his gun however. You have to hold him up to get him to drop the Moss camo, which is the only camo that can reach 100% camo and will recover health and stamina, health regen is slower, in sunlight, or torch light. For additional fun you can tranq his parrot and release it to follow back to the end, or you can kill it to make The End more aggressive but unable to find you as easily. The Fury: Invincible to your tranq darts until you slash his suit with the combat knife. He also plays a bit like the Vulcan Raven fightif you choose to engage with him "properly". You can also shoot the pipes overhead to put out some of the fires he leaves in his wake. Non-lethal takedown gets you the Fire camo, which halves damage taken by explosions...kinda weak I know but it looks cool. The Sorrow: You can skip the entire boss fight by taking a fake death pill, followed by revival pill. You get his camo by default. Volgin: Put on the Raiden mask to distract him long enough for a free hit, only works once. Plus there are pipes in the arena that you can shoot to spray him with water to weaken his electricity. Throwing a Russian Glow cap into the arena will absorb some of his lighting attacks as well. Non-lethal takedown gives you the Cold War camo. Enemy soldiers will hesitate to shoot you while you face them, will attack from behind though. The Boss: CQC! After spending the entire game getting your ass kicked, you finally get to turn the tables. With careful timing you can counter her CQC throws and throw her to ground for some free shots with the gun of your choice. Non-lethal win nets you the Snake camo, no real special abilities but is effective in just about every environment. Final Ocelot duel: It is possible to "lose" but the bullet will still be a blank. You can also choose to not fire or miss on purpose. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, I hope these help you have some more fun with these bosses on future playthroughs.
IMO you missed the point of the ladder and the song. They didn't decide to play the song because the ladder is so long, but the opposite: they made the ladder so long in order to break the pace and allow the player to relax while just listening to the amazing song. Kojima is a master with unconventional gameplay to throw off the player. Stuff like the psycho mantis reading your memory card and making the controller move in mgs1, Campbell breaking the 4th wall and ordering you to turn off the console in mgs2 are other examples of it.
I played this game back in the day almost simultaneously with Silent Hill 2, so the long stair going up felt to me like an interesting counterpart to the creepy long stair going down in SH2.
You're half-right. The sticks control your run and sneak walks. The directional buttons control the stalking walk, which is the slowest movement and drains more stamina but completely silent. Sneak walking is good for most situations however still makes some noise so if you're planning on getting close to enemies or using CQC you either need to be quick or use stalking instead.
Its in my Top3 of favourite games of all time (the Subsistence version, which you maybe should have played instead of the og version). This is just peak Metal Gear to me, the amount of times this game blew me away with its content are countless. Things like the ladder sequence and the end fight are absolute magic, also probably the most fun Codec calls in the series. Edit. Tbh, I didnt find the switching to the menu to do things like healing nearly as negative as you, even on a replay a few years ago it never bothered me.
A LOT of your complaints about the camera and such are pretty much all addressed by Subsistence. Personally I think Subsistence looks, and plays far better as a result of the free third person camera.
@@furleysbrain Metal gear Solid 3 had a Re-Release later with more content and it was Called Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence And it added a 3D camera to the game (by pressing down on the Right stick you could Switch between the original camera or the 3D camera on the Fly) A lot of the Early MGS games had these Re-releases MGS1 had integral (only in Japan) it had multiple difficulties and some Bonus stuff Mgs2 had substance which had a lot of VR Missions, a Boss Rush, and more
Fun fact about the Raikov disguise: you can be as abusive as you want to guards short of shooting them or blowing them up as Raikov as a person is a sadist and because he's Volgin's boytoy no-one can stop him. So make sure go slap a guard or 2. More practically it allows you to explore the base more leisurely, get familiar with the base ready for the escape sequence and collect items that would otherwise be a pain to get during the initial infiltration and escape section. I can't remember but I think the guard dogs in the west yard with the tanks can smell you're not Raikov though so keeping your distance from them is a good idea.
the audio issue you mention is a common issue with the emulator and how it down mixes the surround sound data to stereo and the relies on the host OS to remix it back up to 5.1 I have noticed that issue with a few PS2 games when emulated
yeah, i figured that was the issue. Im not sure if he should take the emulation gameplay as a basis for the review since they always (specially on ps2 emulation to this day) arent always 100% an accurate representation of the final product. He just should have played the collection version instead and just point out that in the original game the FPS was capped at 30.
The comments made at the 12 min mark about the Boss, "swiftly disarming us, and breaking our arm before throwing us into the river below, leaving us to die." I was under the assumption that the Boss took action before Colonel Volgin did, because she did not want to kill Snake and knew Volgin would have killed him if she didn't...
It’s the opening title sequence that made me fall in love with this game. I was studying media at university at the time and had just done a case study about title sequences in which I referenced a James Bond Movie live and let die, only months later was I watching the Snake eater intro marvelling at how Kojima and his team have crafted the James Bond style opening for MGS:3, setting the tone and reminding us of exactly where Kojima gets his influences and inspiration from.
Whilst I do agree that the menus can be temperamental, it doesn't take away that this game in general was ahead of its time. I hope that in MGS Delta, they include an ingame cure/food/backpack system that can be cycled through. Great vid :)
Out of all the the different options to choose to play MGS3 you went with the fixed camera one. Unfortunately I agree the camera wasn’t great for this type of open game, that’s why when subsistence came out it game the player the freedom to play with the best camera.
Its so weird watching someone play these games lethally, explaining how they just didnt understand many things- which makes sense considering the game is designed mostly around non lethal gameplay ALSO I just wanted to say, its very clear you never called anyone with the codec as they thoroughly explain every gameplay mechanic.
It looks like you missed a few things. Firstly it looks as if you never used the stalking mechanic when sneaking up behind guards, this is crucial because this is the only way of using CQC without being heard. Also it looks like you didn't know you could interrogate guards while in a CQC grip. You can learn all kinds of cool info and even radio frequencies that heal you, and also alert cancellations and more.
FUN FACT: Tselinoyarsk is actually the future site of the nation Zanzibar Land. As someone who played through MG2, this was a cool detail that blew my mind back when MGS3 came out. I was listening to the opening briefing in MGS3 and went "HOLY SHIT! GROZNYJ GRAD IS IN ZANZIBAR LAND,' as I realized the area they described as the Tselinoyarsk roughly corresponded to the geographic location described as the location of Zanzibar Land. An even cooler bit of detail is the fact that the ingame geography/Level Layout and biomes for MGS3 ALSO roughly correspond to MG2's layout too.
@@PlebNC it was definitely intentional. you don’t highlight the fact that the place you’re dropping at the start of the game is in roughly the same location as a previous game geographically speaking, then go out of your way to recreate the ecological & topographical layout of said game “by coincidence”. What’s more this fact is actually brought up in the novelization of MGS4, by Project Ito… which Kojima collaborated & had input on, reviewed, & approved… prior to its release. Thing is I picked up on this back when MGS3 released…. LONG Before MGS4 was made, much less it’s novel… to say nothing of it’s English translation.
Hey Chole! I'd like to point out some things you missed that I'm sure others have already pointed out. 1. The bolt in your arm was not a bug. If you take too long to remove it Snake's wound will heal around it making removal impossible. A nice detail I've always appreciated. 2. Pressing the action button during the EVA section will have Snake tell her to follow. Keeping her well fed also increases her movement speed. Not a fix for that segment but it does make it slightly better. 3. Calling Sigint after fighting the Cobra Unit members will give their lore, but making that optional is an interesting choice. 4. Not only do you heal by patching yourself up, you also heal by letting those injuries heal over time. In fact, healing the long way grants a superior increase to your health. On a side note, I'm shocked you didn't mention the solution for The Sorrow "boss fight". How long did it take you to figure that out? Great video! You really kept us waiting, huh?
Yo! I know how to beat the sorrow every different way, and still end up playing it multiple times, because I’m so used to hitting continue on the death screen.
Still remember playing this on launch day on my PS2, it was fucking mindblowing at the time. I still never played the subsistance version. Honestly I don't care about the remake either, I played the original so much I have enough of it but it's pretty much a flawless game for me. I totally understand the gripes you have with some of the system, but honestly I much prefer this era of games trying to increase depth even at the cost of player QOL, than the opposite direction modern games ultimately went into.
Just watching through your play throughs I notice you don't tend to use lateral thinking which was one of the highlights of the games, and sometimes that's why you don't always feel like you "got it". Like in MGS1 with mantis, changing your controller port to 2, stops him reading your mind. With MGS2 vamp, you weren't shooting the knifes but in this one, you never used the beehives above ocelot to bring him out of cover. The pain, if you want to deal with bees, in the real world you'd smoke them so smoke grenades are very effective. The fury's interesting mechanic is if you destroy his fuel tanks on his back You could of used your tranquilliser on the bosses to take their abilities, or the end talking about his endurance, and being close to death, if you change the system clock he'll die of age
FYI - The Sorrow and The Joy's (The Boss) son is Ocelot You can also see The Sorrow's body in a cut scene when Snake is thrown off the bridge by the boss. He is in the background when Snake is getting out of the river.
The best thing the re release did is change the camera with a click of a button. This game is way more suited to 3rd person. Also this story is extremely necessary to understand some of the twists in MGS4 :)
Did you interrogate any soldiers for info? Did you blew up their supplies so they starve and go low on ammo? I feel like you missed out on some cool features in MGS3. Also, when you play MGS4, please learn the CQC. I remember watching my friend get stuck fighting Vamp because he didn’t learn the CQC. He thought you could only slam people, lol. Also there is a CQC technique where you can take the mercenaries down and go for a MMA style rear naked choke. It’s very satisfying. You can even hold to choke long enough to kill the mercenaries.
I was wondering if he interrogated them, too. I did for every soldier I could. It adds an extra touch to find the relaxing radio frequencies and the fire bomb and cancel alert ones. 😊
@@Gadlightyou can't interrogate soldiers in 2 tho, the best you can do is tell 'em to freeze after pointing a gun to their back and then getting them to drop items and dogtags by threatening them
You need to replay this game's subsistence release on extreme to really appreciate a lot of the details and be forced to use and learn the many many mechanics that are not out rightly explained.
14:51 You don't say it here (maybe you didn't notice) but that weapon expert is the DARPA chief from MGS1 (the guy you were meant to save). EASTER EGGS!
@@notcole He's also the character that gives you the Cobra Team or whatever their name was backstories. If you call Sigint he talks about them (I think it was Sigint the guy who does that)
When fighting The Fear, use a fake death pill, he will investigate you, after he turns around, stand up, throw a stun/flash grenade before he notices you, then shoot him after the flash to drain his stamina for a “no lethal” takedown, don’t matter the weapon. After you then unlock a camo
The ladder climb is such peak Kojima game design. It's just so weird and different that it's an artistic masterpiece. If nobody else pointed it out, you can win the fight with The End by saving, quitting, and not playing for like 7 days. You'll load your save and he'll have died of old age.
Since you’re new to the series I don’t expect you to know all the ins and outs of the game. But most MGS fans would tell you to play the subsistence version of the game instead of the original. So that camera wouldn’t be an issue. Now secondly the item management is actually not bad at all. As most play throughs you only ever need a few weapons. Now if you’re new and trying everything out I can see that being an issue but even when I started off when I was kid I don’t recall having a problem because I’d just equip the weapons I’d for sure want and that’s it typically never having to go back into it. Only a few moments in the game where something else is required. Also the more weight you’re carrying the more stamina drains which is why you’ll see people carrying the bare minimum. I also didn’t have an issue with the cure, food or camo menus because although it is going into a menu it felt more immersive in a way. Least as a kid it did. Having to actually eat the food, and cure myself of injuries, and changing what I’m wearing in blend in to the environment just felt more immersive. Could it be executed better? Sure maybe a quick menu in game like the equip menu for items. But the issue you have with camo is also the same thing as the weapons and items. Although yes you can equip different camos in every area it isn’t needed. You only need to switch your camo about 5 times or 6. As you can get through majority of the game with 1 game as it gives you about 30-50% in most areas. Only needing to change it for a few locations, like the desert mountain top, the little river, the 2 different disguises. Thats 4 there. And swapping back after the disguise is 5. Also if you take out bosses with non lethal means (except for the end) you get their camos which ocelot gives a camo that helps your aim not shake when stamina is low. Which then allows you to ignore the eating part lol. Even though the menus are an understandable “complaint” I don’t think it changes the game being the best in the series tbh. It’s truly a masterpiece
You can actually get The End's camo. But iT doesn't work the same as the other bosses, non-lethal win. Instead you have to sneak up on him from behind and aim your gun up and down his body, then The End will shake and his camo outfit will drop for you. The End's camo is the only camo that gives 100% index camouflage.
@@afanofpeanuts7381 yeah I know that, that’s why I said “if you take out the bosses non-lethal means (except for the end)”. It’s my favorite game of all time, trust my guy I know lol. I can’t wait for the remake
I'm sorry but in this day and age there's really no excuse for making the original release of Snake Eater your first playthrough, especially if you're not even going to play it on original hardware. It's not hard to find out in seconds that literally everybody on the planet suggests the subsistance version because of the improved camera and they literally just rereleased the game last year.
It's really not that big of a deal. The games pretty well the same. You're only missing what I would consider extra content. Silly videos, and European extreme. The camera has some difficulty but I managed a complete stealth run through the first release on hardest difficulty without any problems before I even knew the alt version existed.
Even though all rereleases of MGS3 has the modern camera control you can click the analog stick to bring it back to the original camera, which can provide an advantage in areas like the building you found Sokolov at.
I haven't seen the whole review yet (I'm half way there) but so far I think some of your issues come from the crunchy/deadline driven nature of this series of videos. Not a dig at all, and I can see why you would think like that about those things being annoying or waste of time. However, here are my two cents: -The bosses/cobra squad, have a lot of backstory, it's just one of those "blink" and you miss things, since a lot of them are given on codec calls after beating them. I feel Kojima did this for those players that want a more straightforward cinematic game, so instead of dragging with flashback cutscenes, he chose optional conversations. -The healing, cammo and item management, I feel might be hit or miss for some. I personally loved the back and forth from menus to gameplay. I see it more as a tactical option than an interruption, since you are not required to do it that often. Good gameplay would prevent you from taking injuries, and wound treatment should be done in safe spaces so you don't take more. And I would only change the item loadout/cammo at the beginning of the areas. But hey, I played the game back when I was 14, It was a technical marvel at the time, and I hadn't played neither of the previous ones. I think the game could be better with some really simple Quality of Life improvements, like faster loading times, and better frame rate. P.S: I remembered working really hard to get all the cammos, and I was really pissed that there was a snow cammo, but no snow level. Worst game ever, 10/10.
Great video! Snake eater is top 3 game experiences ever. Both others are on the ps2 as well (gran turismo 4 and socom 2 online) I would love to hear your take on the socom us navy seal series on the ps2
It's interesting that Chole seems to prefer streamlined, smooth experiences within scope than more expansive ones. His complaints on the menu struggles here hammer that home. I think it's a perfectly valid perspective that does not have to match any other player's. Things that bother one person about a game may not bother another. Some players want condensed, intensive play experiences and don't care at all if the game feels like a perpetual gauntlet. Others yearn for freedom and exploration and discovery. It's all a matter of perspective and personal taste.
The Fear has a number of gimmicks. He has a range of crossbow bolts that inflict a variety of injury types. He's mostly invisible which encourages using the thermal goggles if you found them. The arena is filled with trap which limits evasion some of which are pit traps that instantly kill you. The splits you attention between looking up for The Fear and down to avoid traps. The Fear's stealth camo drains his stamina. When low enough he uncloaks, becomes slower and will attempt to hunt for food over fighting you. This gives you a breather for your own hunting, healing or clearing away traps. You can use this to poison by throwing out a poisonous mushroom (there's some in the arena if you're unprepared) or give him food poisoning by throwing out spoilt food as he'll prioritise already spawned food item boxes over hunting. This is excellent for no kill runs as you can tranq him until he's hungry, food poison him, then get the last hits in while he's vomiting. Alternatively you can place some TNT/claymore, throw food near it to bait The Fear into it for some Wile E Coyote tomfoolery.
Man, I'm going through your MGS videos right now - and liking them all as I go, like a good viewer! - and I'm really sad you didn't play the Subsistence version. While your adherence to the original releases is super admirable, playing Subsistence with a custom 60FPS patch in a PS2 emulator, with a PS3 controller to give you those pressure sensitive face buttons, is absolutely the way to go.
Man im enjoying all your mgs reviews. I completely agree with all ur points on mgs3. I really liked the game but i had the same criticism as you. Exactly the same opinions. Now on to mgs4! One of my favs. It connects all the plots from 123.
Just subbed to your channel, as I've enjoyed a lot of your reviews of games you've done. There's a few things in this review that are either incorrect, or have been looked over. Maybe they were pointed out by others in the comments, but I'm not reading all of them lol. 1. The time between the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater isn't 2 weeks, it's 6 days. 2. The inventory menu (camo, food, cure and equipment) work as intended. It may disrupt the flow of gameplay, but it works in the sense that you can optimise everything and give yourself the best advantages possible without being shot at. Regarding weapons and equipment, it's better this way because I always found it frustrating in MGS1 and 2 that you had to scroll through the entire list to equip what you wanted. In this game, at least you mitigate that problem by selecting 8 or fewer items each, which I thought was a better design. 3. The ladder section, to me, felt like a couple of minutes of time where you could reflect on the journey so far. That, or Kojima really wanted to incorporate the biggest game of Snakes and Ladders of all time lol. 4. To get Eva to move at the end of the game, just press the action button and she'll move. 5. More subjective here as we all play games our own way, but you missed a lot of intricate gameplay mechanics and details. For instance, if you throw a hornets nest at The Pain, the hornets will go to that instead and enhance the quality of it. The Fear can be fed poison dart frogs, rendering it easy to deplete his stamina. The End can be killed early (at the warehouse scene immediately after The Fear goes out to search for you), or if you fast forward the internal clock, he'll die of old age. The Fury is easier to see with NVG. If you wear Raiden's mask, you can get a free shot during the Volgin fight. In the prison, the guard will give you food. If you throw out 3 bits of food back, a cutscene will play. You find that he's Johnny's (from MGS1 and 4) grandfather, also called Johnny, and he'll give you your cig spray. On ps2 version, if you save in the prison, turn it off, then go back to it, there's a hidden mini game in the form of a nightmare. During the last showdown with Ocelot, picking the revolver on the right with no bullets, allows you to unlock the SAA for new playthroughs. So many things you missed. I recommend playing it a few times, in order to get the most out of this game. You'd probably rate it higher. But for a review of only one playthrough, I can see why this could be considered a fair commentary of the game. Keep up with the reviews, man. They're good. Been enjoying your Resident Evil ones, too.
One of Hind D choppers can be prevented from spawning by destroying the Hind at the helipad before the fight with Ocelot at the ravine. This is hinted at by a radio call you can have at the helipad. The chopper is replaced by a hover platform instead.
I had played MGS3 the entire way through and never noticed the Life Medicine. Playing the game with nothing but the auto heal was a very different experience that honestly I have more fun with the game repeating this. I personally don't have much issue with the camo thing as you only really use 5 different choice through the entire game and its an afterthought once you know which are best for which environments. Additionally you get special camos when you kill all the bosses nonlethally as well and its a rather fun challenge. Once again another excellent vid. Really interested to seeing how you feel about 4, best of luck and keep up the great work!
Really enjoying your reviews/your new experiences with the franchise. I'd advise playing the Substance version briefly to try out the movable camera, which helps a lot and adds to the immersion. MGS1 is still my favorite in the franchise, but I enjoy all of them. All the best to you!
Thanks for the video! I've been waiting for this one, I like the story recaps and the gameplay perspective. I think one reason people like this game so much is there are so many Easter eggs and little secrets you can do, like saving the game and quitting while waiting for The End to die of old age, for example. Or taking the fake death pill and causing a time paradox. 😂
Fairy boi took 15 hours to beat MGS3 on easy difficulty yet complains about how hard it is too die. Call it what you like, you can clearly tell he rushed past this game to produce a mid review video.
I stopped midway the vid with how much stupid complain he's having. I like his other vids but this one ain't it, he's rushing the game and didn't even try to enjoy the game. Even with only watching half the vid, I can already see him missing so many stuff the game has to offer which is only noticeable if he actually took his time with the game. His problem with the stealth is just the matter of him being impatient and not because of skill, the stealth in this game is pretty easy to do and only require patience even if you suck at video games you can pass the guards as long as you're patient enough to wait for the right timing.
The man gave the game a 9.1 and called his second favorite MGS games, you guys are being too harsh just because he gave mildly critical opinion. Also now that he brings it up, it does seem like the Cobra unit has less characterization in the boss battles compared to the bosses in previous games. Like yeah the lore is in the codec conversations but optimally it should be in both places, codec calls like video game codexes are not cinematic.
life also regenerates when you crouch in MGS2. you can toggle between the old & new camera with R3 in Subsistence, it's definitely the best way to play. there's a 60 fps code for PCSX2. stamina also levels up, but it's more granular. a lot of the difficulty from bosses comes from choosing to go non-lethal. The Fear eats food to recover, so you have to be more aware when playing like that. you are rewarded with extra unlocks. I didn't mind the Eva part, I was actually pretty invested in getting her through safely, but it was interesting seeing your perspective. 2 & 3 are definitely my favourites, the ability to mess with AI in 3 is unmatched.
I was 10 or 12 years old when I found a disc in a CD Folder (we had modded PS2s) with the name "Metal Gear Solid 3" and I didn't know what it was, but I put into the console and played the game. I can't even remeber how I finished it, given the complexity of the game and I only played stuff like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Dexter or Spyro before. But I enjoyed it. I never felt so drawn to a game and a story. It was one defining moment for me. Later I got to know the other games and since then I am a Kojima Fanboy. Was a blast to see your review after all this time and I'm glad that you also had so much fun with the game. Thank your for this series, can't wait for you to play Peace Walker and Phantom Pain!
Whilst The Fear fight was never the greatest I think there's a reason you found it so easy/boring. You're playing on an emulator at a higher resolution, presumably either on a large tv or a monitor that you're relatively close to. Back at launch however you would've likely been playing in 480i on a small CRT and the boss fight is balanced for that. Trust me The Fear is a whole lot harder to spot whilst invisible under those conditions, making the boss fight much more interesting as you're quickly panning around squinting your eyes to try to spot a glimpse of him amongst the trees and kill him before he kills you, it's a lot more tense & as a kid atleast I found it kinda scary. Unfortunately modern high resolutions make spotting him trivially easy, so the boss fight descends into a boring shooting gallery. This is honestly why I feel you should've played a more modern version. The quest for authenticity is defeated as soon as you up the res, it really changes the entire feel of the forests and makes spotting enemies, traps, items etc far easier than originally intended. Whilst more modern versions unfortunately don't fix this they do actually represent the experience 99% of people will have with MGS3 (remember Subsistence came out only a year after the original so far more people have played that & it's derivatives than this version). They way you ended up playing is an unfortunate halfway house, retaining the issues of the original whilst also adding the problems of later releases thereby crafting an inferior experience than was intended by any release. But that's just my opinion, I understand why you wanted to play the original but without playing it on an actual PS2 I don't personally feel you gain much.
Idk why he go through that process instead of just buying the modern version of it and also I think since he was rushing through the game he couldn't have been bothered to talk to anyone who would've told u multiple ways u could've handled the fight, the easiest just being use the NVG or just throw out food
Did anyone mention that you can destroy ammo and health storage rooms with TNT and when you go back to those areas the guards will be super hungry with their stomachs growling and desperate for food. You can throw poisonous food at them, they will eat it and instantly die. Also since you destroyed their weapons storage, they will all be short on ammo. So when they go to shoot you after one clip they will switch to their handguns.
Starting at 48:00 to 50:27, this might be the only metal gear solid 3 video that perfectly summarized the ending without making it sound complicated lol! I definitely have to give you props for that, and what a great video. I personally believe you would’ve had a better time if you played the Subsistence release (and maybe even given it a higher score), but I definitely have to give you even more props for playing the original release LOL! I personally can’t decide if my favorite in the series is 2 or 3 because they both are so good in their own unique ways!
Amazing video as always. This is the first time that i see a person playing snake eater instead of subsistence, i had never played that version. Maybe you dont have the same opinion as the mayority, but you have defended it very well, i respect you. I hope you play the better version in stream. With the desing of the bosses, there are a lot of ways to dealing with each one, you should experiment more next time you play.
The basic punch combo is handy for flooring enrmies without putting them in a dizzy stun via bodyslam. Afterwards, you can hold them up and they will lie prone with hands behind their head and they will STAY there unless discovered by a comrade or you trigger an alert phase.
The audio issue you had isn't as prominent when using the 3rd person camera, its more reliable as the audio is around where the camera is aiming, not so reliable when switching between fixed camera/audio and first person
I think your review is very fair. The problems you cited are things that factually exist, and you have every right to cite them. I think that most of us just look back at the final cutscene, at the amazing way The Boss is re-contextualized and shown to be, arguably, the only real good guy in the whole story, and instantly forgive the game it's flaws, because the writing and character arcs and performances are JUST THAT POWERFUL -- particularly in 2004 when video games were still figuring out what stories they COULD tell, much less how to tell them this effectively. And that just gets into questions about how you review things. Does gameplay outweigh story? Should nostalgia and context be factored in?--especially if you're two decades removed from that context? I think every reviewer has to make these decisions for themselves. And, personally, I don't care how you make them, because that's your business and you're allowed to have your own opinions and I'M allowed to agree OR disagree with those opinions. At the end of the day, what really matters is that you got to take this journey at all. Thank you for bringing us with you.
The fact that every boss explodes once you beat them is meant as a double reference to both old videogames in general, as well as the fact that all of the bosses in the original Metal Gear games exploded upon defeat! ^^ Even the Boss even explodes, but it's not in the canon game; it's featured in a video that was included in the joke-filled Secret Theater that was a part of the Subsistence release.
The frequent pause menu interactions are nothing i ever had a problem with, could be because i played the ps3 and pc releases and it needing less time to load i guess. They also fixed this issue in the 3ds version by having an icon for cure, backpack, camo etc on the touchcreen to access these menues easier.
Mgs 3 is shart
@@NeoMoonSevinNo lol. MGS3 is the best one period. The first is the next best. I’m fairly sure 99 percent of people would agree this is the best one of them all. Hell I nearly got tears in my eyes at the end killing the boss. That’s amazing. Not to mention the sniper battle with the end which was freaking awesome
Come on, man!
I'm more than glad to listen to an opinion that isn't the same as everyone.
Just keep the great work!

The Crosbow bolt didn't bug.
It took you a long time to remove it, so the arm healed and scarred with it stuck.
Happens with bullets too. If you don't dig them out, they will show up in the X-ray view even after the wound has healed.
They didn't include the theme song during the ladder to entertain the player, the theme song is the point of climbing the ladder.
The point of the ladder is to cover a massive loading screen. The whole climb the next area is loading.
@@SuperSayinSolidSnek No it's not.
Speed runners skip this, nothing loads on the ladder.
@@SuperSayinSolidSnek lol, the loading screen happens almost immediately after the ladder, so which exactly loading screen is it hiding?
The ladder length isn't for loading, its contextual to the story. You're ascending up a mountain. The ladder is meant to make you take in exactly how far you're going up. Its the same reason why after a while you start to hear strong winds the closer you approach the top.
The song is the whole point of the ladder - you reach the top just as the song enda no matter if you’re climbing the whole song or not
One thing you may have missed because a lot of the lore is hidden in random codec conversations: It is hinted heavily in the codec conversations with Eva that the child the Boss had with the Sorrow during WW2 and then taken away from her by the Philosophers is actually Ocelot himself.
I seem to have totally missed that one though 😅
Definitely makes their rivalry throughout the game more interesting 🤔
Yup... It was hinted that he was. Ocelot (Adamska) was born on D-Day, and his mom gave birth to him on the battlefield via C-Section. The Boss gave birth to a baby boy at Normandy during Operation Overlord (D-Day)... and has a big snake shaped scar on her chest from the emergency operatiom, performed on the battlefield, to save her & the baby's life.
and thats why liquids spirit could attach to ocelot as easily as liquid did in mgs2. Cause ocelot is the sorrows son.
@@Dirty_Davosexcept it didn't. He went through some hypnotherapy and nanomachines... to implant the personality.
Subsistence has both camera angles. I think you click the right stick to freely change between fixed and free cam x
It did I’m 40 now and that was the game I bought when I was 20 😞 not to mention subsistence had the first metal gear online. It was actually the first online multiplayer I ever played
2 things worth mentioning: Your health bar increses when you let your injuries heal for themselves. And the Eva escort part, you have to press the action button to tell her to follow you
1: That makes sense, wasn't sure for a while.
2: THERE'S A BUTTON FOR THAT??
Thats if the awful button even worked. i was so pissed because it never seemed to work and just squatted down in the bushes no matter what i did.
Damn I did NOT know you could raise your health bar like that
@@princezeta3321 she'll be crouched down unless she can see your hand signal. if she can't see your hand, how would she know to follow you?

The "trick" with the Fear is his stamina. He needs to eat -- and by leaving poisonous food around you can make him very vulnerable while he throws up.
And you are totally right that normal is ridiculously easy in this game
man that's actually really cool! I must've just killed him too fast to see it 😅
@@notcole another thing you might have missed on first playthrough is non-lethal takedowns of bosses give special camouflage as rewards.
Screwing with the Fear during that fight, feeding him poisonous and rotten food is what brings me joy.
A few things I enjoyed with The End boss fight.
You can completely avoid the fight by killing him when they're on the docks if you get into position and shoot fast enough.
You can set your Playstation settings time for a later date and he will actually die of old age.
You can shoot his bird and really piss him off.
cool thing about mgs3 is freedom of choice how to do with enemy that why it might be easy in someway if you figure it out
i find it positive more than negative
You can also capture the bird and eat it (you monster. If you do, talk to Paramedic. It's hilarious). If you release it after capturing it, it will fly away towards The End, giving away his position.
I don't think you get his gun if you avoid his fight, right?
MGS3 does seem the most codec call heavy of the series. There is a crazy amount of content in optional codec calls.
Almost like the game should have MADE THE FUCKING CALLS MANDATORY.
Beat the game knowing NOTHING about ANYTHING because they thought that making the story optional was a great idea. THE ENTIRE BUILD UP OF THE BOSS IS IN THE TUTORIAL AND YOU CAN SKIP IT ALL
@@vazazell5967 why are you so angry it’s just a Game My guy 😅
@@vazazell5967OKAY, BUT WHY IN ALL CAPS THO?
I had an arrow go directly through Snake's head one time. I didnt remove it in time and it stayed there the entire game
Well, you can't blame the player for playing the game another way, I may love this game but good game design has to have both ways feel fulfilling.
The ladder climb is one of the most iconic moments in all of gaming
Always a thrill
I played this game back in the day almost simultaneously with Silent Hill 2, so the long stair going up felt to me like an interesting counterpart to the creepy long stair going down in SH2.
1 thing that took me a while to figure out is that the ability to sneak is mapped to the directional buttons and not the sticks.
That ladder climbing part is ICONIC
Yeah. I'm pretty sure the huge ladder is there for the song, not the other way around.
@@SnakebitSTI it's there to cover a massive loading screen.

Just thought I'd point out with the Subsistence release you can swap the camera from third person to fixed camera angles at any time.
A LOT of your complaints about the camera and such are pretty much all addressed by Subsistence. Personally I think Subsistence looks, and plays far better as a result of the free third person camera.
What does Subsistence mean?
@@furleysbrain in this context? It’s the reworked rerelease of MGS3, with controllable camera option, and additional scenes and content.
FACTS
@@furleysbrain Metal gear Solid 3 had a Re-Release later with more content and it was Called Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence And it added a 3D camera to the game
(by pressing down on the Right stick you could Switch between the original camera or the 3D camera on the Fly)
A lot of the Early MGS games had these Re-releases MGS1 had integral (only in Japan) it had multiple difficulties and some Bonus stuff
Mgs2 had substance which had a lot of VR Missions, a Boss Rush, and more
Is there a way to play Subsistence on PC or PS5?

30:40 burh that ladder climb is EPIC
the audio issue you mention is a common issue with the emulator and how it down mixes the surround sound data to stereo and the relies on the host OS to remix it back up to 5.1 I have noticed that issue with a few PS2 games when emulated
yeah, i figured that was the issue.
This video is already long
It’s the opening title sequence that made me fall in love with this game.
Thanks Chole. Love to see new people enjoying these games and keeping metal gear alive. You've got me feeling nostalgic.
Simp
Its so weird watching someone play these games lethally, explaining how they just didnt understand many things- which makes sense considering the game is designed mostly around non lethal gameplay
ALSO I just wanted to say, its very clear you never called anyone with the codec as they thoroughly explain every gameplay mechanic.
Did you know that Subsistence has both the classic and 3D camera which you can swap with R3 in game?
100 hours in this game and I still haven't bothered playing with the camera in it's original form
I don't think that's true. Feels like a coincidence not a planned detail.
Been waiting for your video on this!! My favorite game in the whole series.
Finished it 13x back on the PS2!
You really kept us waiting, huh?
never heal the arrows and turn Snake into a porcupine next time, got it 🙂
Took me more times than I'd like to admit, somewhere around 3 😂
Yo! I know how to beat the sorrow every different way, and still end up playing it multiple times, because I’m so used to hitting continue on the death screen.
@@notcolePorcupine Snake sounds so badass! Like his ultimate form!
With MGS2 vamp, you weren't shooting the knifes
but in this one, you never used the beehives above ocelot to bring him out of cover.
The pain, if you want to deal with bees, in the real world you'd smoke them so smoke grenades are very effective.
The fury's interesting mechanic is if you destroy his fuel tanks on his back
You could of used your tranquilliser on the bosses to take their abilities,
or the end talking about his endurance, and being close to death, if you change the system clock he'll die of age
FYI - The Sorrow and The Joy's (The Boss) son is Ocelot
You can also see The Sorrow's body in a cut scene when Snake is thrown off the bridge by the boss. He is in the background when Snake is getting out of the river.
Is it just me, or is sorrow halfway on snake's side?
Fun fact when u are escorting eva when u have to treat her wounds you can put the full xray mode on and see some neat details😉
The best thing the re release did is change the camera with a click of a button. This game is way more suited to 3rd person.
Also this story is extremely necessary to understand some of the twists in MGS4 :)
Bro is terrified of the pause button
@@vhagerty he never even mentioned this when it was added in 2 so this is starting to show that he is reviewing the games at a really basic level

14:51 You don't say it here (maybe you didn't notice) but that weapon expert is the DARPA chief from MGS1 (the guy you were meant to save).
EASTER EGGS!
HE'S WHAT??
Just had to look it up. They’re right. My mind is blown lol
@@notcole it was said in MGS4, so basically you were spoiled on that one
@@notcole He's also the character that gives you the Cobra Team or whatever their name was backstories. If you call Sigint he talks about them (I think it was Sigint the guy who does that)
@@twocontradictions shit I thought it was mentioned in MGS3 in some conversation. My bad!
Bro I just beat this yesterday, so glad you dropped this. What a banger
When fighting The Fear, use a fake death pill, he will investigate you, after he turns around, stand up, throw a stun/flash grenade before he notices you, then shoot him after the flash to drain his stamina for a “no lethal” takedown, don’t matter the weapon. After you then unlock a camo
You can get a camo from all the cobras non lethally
And yes, Snake Eater is the greatest MGS game. 11/10. One of the greatest games of all time
@@afanofpeanuts7381 yeah I know that, that’s why I said “if you take out the bosses non-lethal means (except for the end)”. It’s my favorite game of all time, trust my guy I know lol. I can’t wait for the remake
what a phenomenal game, great rewiew on mgs 3!
2:56 in the original E3 announcement, it was said it would be in a new setting. And it said it would take place in 1964 on the back of the box.
New setting means location and rarely year
The latter climb is the peak moment of the whole series. What a thrill
However, here are my two cents:
-The bosses/cobra squad, have a lot of backstory, it's just one of those "blink" and you miss things, since a lot of them are given on codec calls after beating them.
Ya lo dijo Ramon
Excellent video. I have now subscribed.
My favorite part of Elden Ring were the messages next to the longer ladder climbs referencing that iconic moment.
I loved the ladder scene. it's a good way to tell you that its the halfway point of the game. a little subtle nod.
Great video! Snake eater is top 3 game experiences ever. Both others are on the ps2 as well (gran turismo 4 and socom 2 online)
I would love to hear your take on the socom us navy seal series on the ps2
Another great video--thanks for almost an hour of entertainment!
30:15 Glad you didn't have trouble beating MGS's hardest boss, THE LADDER. No bonus points for not singing the theme tho.
Sounds like you just straight up didn't understand a ton of basic mechanics because you're trying to rush through these games too fast.
lmao true
And most likely because he’s not playing Subsistence
It really is a fair bit better when you play it with a fully 3d camera.
oh no, I've finally caught up. need more videos. Please hurry Boss!
I just finished this game's Platinum on the Ps5 Master Collection. The timing of this review couldn't have been better!
life also regenerates when you crouch in MGS2.
you can toggle between the old & new camera with R3 in Subsistence, it's definitely the best way to play.
there's a 60 fps code for PCSX2.
stamina also levels up, but it's more granular.
a lot of the difficulty from bosses comes from choosing to go non-lethal. The Fear eats food to recover, so you have to be more aware when playing like that. you are rewarded with extra unlocks.
I didn't mind the Eva part, I was actually pretty invested in getting her through safely, but it was interesting seeing your perspective.
2 & 3 are definitely my favourites, the ability to mess with AI in 3 is unmatched.
im so used to playing this game with a 3D camera i almost forgot it originally had the top down camera like mgs2
Playing with lethal weapons will always make things harder to deal with, especially during the injured EVA section.
I miss this style of metal gear snake eater was legendary cant wait fo the remake
You're actually the first one! Definitely sounds like something I have to try next time I play 🙂
37:11 you missed a lot of fun stuff to do by doing this, including a full minigame lol
Man i sure am glad you are covering such a solid series.
"Solid series"
No pun intended. 😉
Shaggohod naked: snake eater, a game where you pause, and we all love it
Very interesting seeing someone use a lethal playthrough, it seems a lot more easy going. I've only seen playthroughs of non lethal
Subsistance has that much better of a camera. It changes the experience.
The basic punch combo is handy for flooring enrmies without putting them in a dizzy stun via bodyslam. Afterwards, you can hold them up and they will lie prone with hands behind their head and they will STAY there unless discovered by a comrade or you trigger an alert phase.
you're right, you didn't understand the fight versus The Boss. it's meant to be a CQC duel.
If you saw any trailers before the games release, people would know this takes place in the 60s. Wasn't a surprise at all.
That ladder climbing scene… 😎
Quite confident he didn't like it bc he was rushing through the game
@@hydra_drizz2164 this would probably be it ngl
Played this game on my Asus Rog 6 with aethersx2 . Amazing experience
