Ok here it is. i. Nets is a direct debit payment started in the 80s and 90s. Only available in Singapore and you need a pin no. for the payment to go through. ii. Nets flashpay is by the Nets company is also a direct debit but you need to top up your Nets flashpay card as the card STORES value that you top up. iii. Paywave is only for credit/ debit card payments i.e Visa, Mastercard etc. It charges your credit card current account. iv. Ezlink is a lot like Netsflash pay. It STORES the value that you have topped up into the card. Mainly used for public transport. v. Cashcard is by the Nets company. It has a chip and it stores value that you have topped up in the card. Cashcard is not commonly used nowadays. I heard Nets payment is now available in limited Johor Baru shop.
Also nets u get reciept and log when u update bankbook, paywave doesnt log i think. So if you are the type to keep a budget/expense record nets is a better choice.
Thanks for all of that! Sounds convoluted. I still can't see the benefit of Nets flashpay over Nets direct debit. Upon annual visitation to the "Little Red Dot" with my "Xing Gan Bao Bei", we use cash for goods and Ezlink for public transport. We have just ditched credit cards in Australia as the fees and charges outweigh the piddling loyalty benefits. Visa debit keeps it simple "Down Under", with Opal cards (Ezlink equivalent) for public transport mainly in capital cities only.
I'm a little late to this channel but I just love to hear all the good things about Singapore as a Singaporean 😂 And I love it that you guys love our country. Here's a little breakdown of the payment methods available: NETS atm card: For you to withdraw money and also use for shopping. Deducts directly from your bank account. So as long as you have money in your bank account, you can use this. Most retail merchants would have this method but not many restaurants do. NETS Flashpay: Essentially an all in one card. MRT, Bus, cab, 7-11, food courts etc. It serves almost the same function as EZ-Link cards, they are just from 2 different companies as the name suggests. Master/Visa: Needless to say, it's a credit card. All restaurants and retails shops in malls would have this method. Grabpay: This payment method is still not used by all merchants but they are starting to gain traction in our society. Just serves as an E wallet. Similar to flash pay and ez link but can't be used on buses and trains yet. Mostly for food or retail. That's all the payment methods I have used so far in Singapore as a Singaporean. Continue loving our little country!
I stayed in hall for uni and I noticed all the exchange students preferred to stick together, and stayed in residences where there’s a lot of exchange students instead of halls where most people are locals. So when I went for my exchange to Canada I joined clubs and tried to hang out with locals more. I go to Cold Storage for the “atas” things. they also usually have promos for haagendazs. Milks and milo are the same price at all supermarkets unless there’s promos, but yes fresh produce is expensive at cold storage. The reason why merchants ask you how you wanna pay is because there are so many discounts or points on the various platforms. For example Grabpay gives points, credit cards can be linked to shopback, some people don’t have debit/credit cards so they pay with Nets, small shops don’t wanna rent nets/cc terminals so they have paynow or other QR codes which don’t charge merchants %. Amex is honestly useless i don’t know why it still exists. They charge expensive % to merchants compared to Master/Visa. Merchants also have to apply separately to Amex, whereas application for Master&Visa terminals are always together. All this hassle and higher fees are probably only worth it for up-scale luxury places.
Oh, actually public transports are much more environment friendly. Imagine 50+ people on one bus or train versus all those 50+ people having private vehicles each.
Actually it's "transport" not "transports"! Lol, Georgia talked about this in another video, about a common grammatical error made by Singaporeans - adding an "s" behind uncountable nouns (e.g. staffs, equipments, feedbacks)
Payment wise in SG just stick to NETS (enter pincode), standard Credit/Debit Card (swipe card) or Paywave (tap card) and you should be good. Most shops will accept at least one of the above payment method.
Try Shengsiong supermarkets also. Although it seems to be a very Chinese oriented supermarket, it does stock quite a good range of goods and is cheaper than Fairprice. And if you live in the heartlands, try the local grocery stalls, especially if you have a market around. As for payment, for credit cards, yeah, VISA/MASTERCARD, get a NETS if you can, usually can get that from your local banks. Contactless payment, like Paywave, is getting popular. And than there are the 'scan the QR code and pay' types; GrabPay, FavePay. omg... that is a lot, actually. all the best to you 2.
Debit card will be easier for expat. 1) it can be used like a credit card and sign it 2) you can paywave it 3) it has nets function 4) it can be used as ez-link 5) it deduct straight from your bank account
I avoided it too since I had a bad experience with the green channel itself that I even gotten nightmares but after awhile and trying it again,it actually wasn't too bad
I have never lived in Singapore but I am looking for a job there now. But I have lived overseas a few times and what you are saying I think applies to all the other countries based on my experience I think if you are a western moving to a new country. You tend to do things you are comfortable doing and living but you are not the first wester to have moved there so the locals have made those things more expensive. Because they know people will pay for it based on them being comfortable and having the money to pay the price. So my general rule is do as many things you can that are uncomfortable and have a open mind every time you walk at the door. You will probably save money and have good life changing experiences while you are living overseas or aboard like the brits say.
The point about Payment is soo true!! I just started working in 7-11 and sometime people will say payment by ez-link but really its NETS flash pay. And I still need a second to process if the customer said flash pay or paywave . Same thing with pay lah and pay wave.. I guess after a point you get used to it.
But ez-link and NETS flash pay are two different companies even thou both started of to compete in the public transport payment market. Cards usually have one or the other, and some outlets only accept one, but not the other.
@@user-ct7ew2cd6o people associate one term for each point of payment, since that was what we were used to. Prior to ezlink it was just Transitlink. ERP was just cashcard. So for the longest time we just had these two cards besides the usual credit/debit/nets/atm cards. I commented on that because by saying "ez-link but really its NETS flash pay", you seem to imply all ezlink payments are actually NETS flashpay. They are not necessarily so, and the difference matters at some points of transaction which only accepts one but not the other.
Good point about the payment thing, I'm a Singaporean living in London, and there seems to be a new way of paying method popping up every time I go back. I still don't know myself what is what, and there are always at least two machines you can tap on, and Im always tapping the wrong one with the wrong card. Unlike in London where you just say "contactless" for everything, and most of the time you don't have to say anything because everyone does contactless anyway
Payment via NETS/debit card means money will be deducted immediately from your bank account once you pressed enter. Payment via VISA/Mastercard/JCB/Amex etc means pay on credit, that is, money will only goes out when you settle your card statement on monthly basis. Pay wave is just a method of contactless processing the payment at the counter. It eliminates the risk of entering the wrong PIN and your card being blocked by the card company, and safer to as you need not have to pass your card to a third party, just tap on the device provided. It can be NETS cards, debit card or credit card, as long as they have the function on the card.
Flashpay is link to the nets cash card. People seldom use them other than paying carpark or ERP on cars. Also nowadays we use ezlink cepas card for both public transport and cars ERP payment. Normal shopping use Mastercard/VISA credit/debit. If use local banks, best is use DBS.
contactless credit/debit card payment: Visa = paywave, Mastercard = paypass (so that's why sometimes we conveniently mention paywave or paypass regardless, the cashier will ask master or visa just to be sure) Might be due to the reason different POS systems are different, then they need to know the "type" of payment to enter into the system. As was mentioned in the vid, if it's from our bank it's like paying debit, so i'd go "aunty/uncle, pay by nets" (; The nets part can be confusing, because we have a NETS card. But wanting to pay "by" nets, or "with" nets is like different? i think. If sometimes we say "pay with Nets", there are two types of NETS cards, NETS flashpay generally has no chip, it works like an ez-link card. or the NETS cashcard with a chip. I'd recommend getting a nets cashcard with a chip (can get from 7-11), because some older carpark gantries are unable to read nets flashpay and ez-link. (then you'd have to stretch your arm out to pay with ez-link which may or may not work) Essentially, i only have an ez-link (enabled with auto-reload with ezlink app) + a nets cashcard with chip (as a spare). the Ez-link i use for ERP, most carpark gantries. and if the carpark is unable to read, i'd swap the ezlink card from the IU unit with the cashcard. NETS generally has no rewards, or cashback options, so i'd just go with ez-link or credit card for retail/ restaurant payments. (; And if the "aunty" or "uncle" may not understand the difference, then it might be easier to communicate by saying "pay by" paywave, paypass, (throw in master/ visa to help them) or nets. im 2 mths late but Danial Rosli below explained the backgrounds of the diff. modes of payments pretty well. haha. Anyways hope this helps, love your vids!
Totally agree...it's so confusing to pay and I am a singaporean! Wish someone would map these alternative payment methods and recommend the best method.
best payment is by nets!! it deducts str8 from ur acc as compared to visa paywave/mastercard paypass which deducts from ur credit card acc and only gets deducted in 3 days. if you're using your debit card to make payment you can just say i would like to pay with nets and it basically needs u to use your pin number. if youre using a qrcode then u can just use ur bank online app and scan the qr code, itll deduct str8 from ur acc:) payment methods like favepay grabpay requires you to top up using ur debit/credit card!
Other than FairPrice and Giant for cheaper groceries, there's also ShengSiong. There isn't as many branches though. Some of the things they sell are at FairPrice's offer price or cheaper. My parents also go to Mustafa Center or a specific shop in Geylang (this one's for frozen food) from time to time. Cold Storage is only if FairPrice Finest/Xtra doesn't have the product we're looking for.
So simplify it Cash Card: nets, debit, credit Virtual: Top up option, Credit card Nets and debit card are the same, pin vs signature. To merchant its another story. Both cases deduct from your bank directly. Nets flashpay is useless. You have to top up separately onto the card (like ez link) and use it there. Might as well just use nets directly. Credit card paying either by signing or taping (paywave/paypass) both billed monthly. Virtual payments you can either top it up inside like grabpay or use credit card directly with favepay. Either way depends on which merchant has promotion for you. Or Apple pay, android pay, samsung pay. These are payment using credit card but through phone. Only accepted for areas with paywave/paypass. To sum up Have cash, nets, credit card. You can pay transport with credit card now. If not have extra ezlink card or a nets flashpay card for transport where you need to top up these. Dont use nets flashpay for anything else.
For me, i break it down into 4 major payment modes: 1. CASH - (That's king!) 2. NETS = EFTPOS = Debit Card (using your current account - current money) Besides the physical debit card, there is also NETS Flashpay = The other of the 2 providers of debit facilities (Prepay) - Initially NETS started off with a CHIP based cashcard which allowed vehicles to pay for their Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges. As the equipment evolved, it allowed a contactless read via a similar technology to EZLINK - Hence NETS Flashpay was born. As NETSFlashpay worked on the NETS network, it is accepted at more shops islandwide. ++NOTE: Nets Flashpay is possibly used by the kids who do not have access to debit/credit cards yet (But do have an EZLINK or Nets-linked card). ++ 3. Credit Card = VISA/Master/AMEX = PAYWAVE/Paypass (using future money) 4. Others: a. Grabpay - an Evolved version of stored value system from the private hire car company (Debit facility - Prepay) b. Favepay taps on Grabpay as well as credit cards to take payment off you. c. EZLINK = One of the 2 providers of debit facilities (pre-pay) for public transport - They try to allow you to use for payment at many shops but the take up rate is not high. Hope this helps in breaking it down for you...
🤣🤣🤣 I can so relate to this. I ate out ALL the time in Singapore, and when living in Australia too. I admit to mostly making western friends, from everywhere, America, Sweden, UK,Ireland, Italy, probably finding they were all in the same boat not knowing locals who had their own friends, family etc.
Hey Georgia! Recently I have been using grab pay through fave pay which is Super helpful! Like really helped me save a lot! If like the place you are eating at doesn’t have shop back,, you can try paying by grab pay though gave pay!! So basically you can link your fave pay and grab pay accounts so you get both the cashback (from fave pay) and the points from (grab pay)! All you have to do is pay by grab using the fave pay app !! Heheh hope it helps
Just use Apple pay or Google Pay for items below SGD 200. Most of the shops in the shopping mall accepted and you could even pay for Bus / Mrt fares if your master/visa card in your Apple pay or Google Pay is register with transitlink simplygo.
Sorry. Saw this video abit late. Flashpay is actually a cashcard with tapping feature, kind of like ezlink. So you have to topup a value into the card before you can use it. Paylah is only for people with DBS/POSB accounts and you need to top-up the paylah app in order to use it. Paynow is app version of internet bank transfer. grabpay is the same as Paylah, except it can be top-upped from any bank acct. There is also DASH from Singtel. Also a stored-value app like paylah and grabpay. There are a couple more which I cannot remember but they are all basically stored-value payment apps. Then you have contact payment with credit card offered by Visa (called PayWave) and Mastercard (called PayPass, but most people just refer to it as PayWave as well). And lastly NETS, which is like a ATM payment, since u need to input a pin. For utility bills and any government-related payment, there is also GIRO, which is an automated bank transfer payment arrangement which you have to apply for to activate for those monthly/recurring payments. I didn't know we had these much options.... wow....until you count or go through all of them.....phew....
Few easy payments in Singapore would be.. 1. Cash 2. Nets 3. Pay wave 4. Grab pay (to earn garb points) Of cos there are many others like others have mentioned but in my opinion these few are the simplest and minimal anyone would make payment by.
A lot of the cards behind has logos to show you what payment it can be used for! Like visa/master is paywave and NETS is well basically nets! Do keep a lookout for that!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Really helpful as I'm starting to look for roles in Singapore but the thing is hard to convince family to move with me
The advise i could give, is to decide card would something that you commonly use for purchasing? For myself commonly use between Paywave ( where you just tap your card ) or Cash. And also you can tell them in advance via Master card/Debit/Cash/Tap that works best and convenient for you :) The other way is to check how much the deduction are when it comes to different forms of payment because some do charge higher ? so Mastercard and Visa might have to pay a lil bit more on top of what you are suppose to pay, hence why some would prefer to pay via cash instead.
When you have too many options in life, those options make your life harder because you have to make a decision. Just like in the hawker center! Too much variety of food and you get lost for a moment. Just reduce to 2 options to make my life easier. Use paywave/nets with the POSB ATM card (paywave and nets)/Visa/Mastercard/Amex for modern businesses such as shopping centers, restaurants etc. Cash for places when I am in doubt of payment/lazy to ask the cashier. Use hand sanitizers or wash hands after manning the money.
If you're still driving, NETS Flashpay is the way to go because it can be used as a cash card for your parking and toll fees and doubles up as a public transport payment card as well. Not to mention that you can use your phone to top up your Flashpay card anywhere anytime by using the Nets Flashpay app. (Apparently, you can only use android phones to top up. For some reason, iPhone's NFC function is not really too commercially available for usage; in this instance, topping up the NETS Flashpay card.) Ever since the Flashpay card was introduced here, it changed my life forever; for the better. When I was driving this one day, my Flashpay card was low in value and I thought of topping it up when I really need to. And then the infamous gantry stood about 500m infront of me, with the words "ERP IN OPERATION" brightly lit. I would say that this is on situation that I would not blame on traffic jams because the jam gave me enough time to top up my Flashpay card with my phone. The Flashpay technology really helped me save quite a few $10 fines to this day.
Well to put it simply, NETS payments simply requires one to insert a bank card issued by Singapore branches of banks and key in their PIN code (as you would at an ATM). The amount will be deducted immediately (if you have sufficient amount in the bank. Flashpay is operated by NETS, which essentially works the same as an EZ-link card, but requires you to top-up credits into your Flashpay e-wallet account. (it's a whole mess, rarely anyone use it) Then there's the debit/credit cards using chip/magnetic strip/contactless. Contactless payments used to be branded as paywave/paypass (for Visa and Mastercard respectrively). Essentially the same thing, but just with different card types. The aunties and uncles don't get updated with these knowledge, so even if you have a Mastercard and said you wanna use paywave, they'll know it's contactless payment. Increasingly, there're QR codes payment now where you can pay via PayNow which is supposed to be for every bank. And their individual branding PayLah/PayAnyone etc. Some shops/services also has their own form of e-wallet that allows their payment through QR Codes. For examply Grab has GrabPay with a huge variety of merchants islandwide. All you need is to open your Grab App and scan the QR at the merchant to pay. Similarly, FavePay also has an e-wallet of their own. They come with their own perks like reward points to redeem coupons/meal deals/Krisflyer miles and more. Lastly we have the NFC payments that we can use our phones for. NFC payments include ApplePay/GooglePay or any other payment portals. ApplePay/GooglePay allows you to connect your credit cards to your account, and collectively protect your cards in your account with a pincode/fingerprint. Just gotta open the app, turn on NFC on your phone and tap on the merchant's NFC payment receiver. This is great if you your wallet, or you forgot to bring your 2nd wallet out.
Hello Georgia hello Justin honestly i do really hope that u both didn't have any regrets on your decision about living and working here ok?. I really hope that u did enjoy living and working here despite of the difference here and back in UK.
Georgia, since you've always been a health enthusiast, and we enjoyed your grocery shopping videos, you should so do one at Scoop (think you'd definitely enjoy their organic selection at either of their Great World City store or the other one at Tanglin Mall).
NETS: deducting payment from bank account using a bank NETS card combining with a PIN Debit card: a NETS card that can make purchases online Credit card: card distributed from bank allowing the use of future money to pay for current purchase, and then pay the accumulated amount at the end of the month Pay wave: function of credit/debit card, tap them on the machine to deduct payment from respective accounts Cash: paper and round metals that have value on it Grabpay/fomo pay/wechat pay: mobile payment that uses debit/credit card to top up the private companies app accounts and then use them to make payment for certain perks Flashpay: payment mode tied to a card deriving from NETs to compete with the other contactless payment (paywave, grabpay, ezlink) Ezlink: a private company card that can store values when it is topped up, can be used to make payment to take public transport or certain purchases Paylah: mobile payment from DBS/POSB
If you're in a hurry, using paywave with your credit card (Mastercard and Visa) is the fastest... just tap and go. Some credit cards, like the DBS Everyday Credit Card will give you debates whenever you spend. Just recently, l was told by a cashier that l have $17 over stored in my credit card which l can use it to off my purchases.
Not always so simple. Many of the options requiring a stored value allows you to top-up using credit card, which also helps you accumulate both credit card points and whatever benefits the specific option offers. Eg: Grabpay can be topped up using credit card. So you get both credit card points and points in Grab. Same thing for ezlink, Nets Flashpay, FavePay, etc. Other options such as Apple/Samsung/Google pay stores your credit card details, so using them to pay is the same as using the credit card itself. The benefit of course, is that you don't have to carry your cards around, although you rarely get any other app benefits.
Yes, gosh there’s more. Not talking about Grab Pay, and all those other WeChat-like payments yet even. NETS is basically the oldest form of payment. Been around for years and it takes directly from tour bank account. Hence you need to key in your ATM PIN for each transaction. CashCard as your might already know is just a stored value card with a chip that pays without the need for a PIN. You’ll need to top it up at a NETS-like machine, at usually CarPark places now. Used mostly in the IU in cars. EZ-link is a contactless stored value card evolved from our transport farecard into being accepted elsewhere as well. You can pay at some merchants now, like McDonald’s, KOI Bubble Tea and even IU Uint in your car for ERP. NETS-Flashpay is like another evolution from the government to catch up with EZ-link back then and make NETS more accessible and contactless, hence the Flash-Pay tagline. Now, Nets-Flashpay can be incorporated into the mobile phones as well. (Mostly Android phones). Apple phones on the other hand use Apple Pay but most aunties and uncles at the cashier only know it as VISA “Paywave”. (You can use Mastercard). I’m not an expert. There’s more. Some like Dash from Singtel came and died. Basically everybody wants to get into the payments game cos alot of money is being processed everyday. and the kinds of payment methods are still growing.. nice to see you called that out. it is kinda daunting. haha..
Ok! So I thought I should write about the different types of card payment that’s available on your cards, and their benefits and what not! We’ll start with stuff that’s more straight forward and move on to stuff like Credit, Debit and Interest. 1. Ez-link • Can be used for trains and buses • Accepted in selected locations like 7-11 • Your student card issued by your school is this! 2. NETS Flashpay • Exactly like ez-link, but can be used at places that accept NETS Flashpay too • YOU MUST TOP UP THE CARD TO USE IT • Does not take directly from your bank account • Tap and go, does not require PIN or signature 3. NETS • Most widely accepted form of card payment • Immediately reflected in your bank account AKA once the money’s gone, it’s gone • Requires card to be inserted and PIN to be entered 4. Credit (Contact) • Every transaction takes time to process (can be cancelled!) • Needs to be swiped or stuck into a machine • Does not take ANY money from your account • Can buy stuff that is more than what you actually have in your account • Payment is made at the end of the month in a bill • Comes with interest • May have membership fees • Comes with benefits, like membership points, discounts on things like phone bills, dining, movies, airline miles, etc to offset the fees • Requires signature for purchases of higher value • Can come with minimum spend to validate card each month 5. Debit (Contact) • Exactly the same as credit! • Limited to what’s in your account • If there is no money left your account, transactions can be rejected • Can have no minimum spend • No interest • Fewer discounts and promotions compared to credit 6. Paywave/PayPass (Contactless) • Paywave is for Visa and PayPass is for mastercard • CONTACTLESS, tap and go and no need to sign • Has all the exact same benefits of credit and debit • IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS CREDIT AND DEBIT • No need to set up • No need to top up to use • It’s as if you stuck the card into the machine! Just tap and go Features like Credit and Debit can be used in Singapore and overseas once activated, where as NETS is a Singapore only system
It’s all down to your specific needs as a customer. Some people may prefer debit to credit because they don’t want to spend what they don’t have or they don’t qualify for credit yet. I know others who pay for different things via different cards linked to different accounts so it maximizes rewards, or simply for ease of accounting. I even know a friend who uses PayLah by signing on credit card for a lunch with friends, getting us to pay him via PayLah, then using that stored value behind his wife’s back since the transactions don’t show up on statements. Ofc, things like Nets Flashpay are obsolete now and just hasn’t been consolidated yet. In the past, cash cards were almost solely used for the ERP device in your car, but every car owner had to have one coz it’s the only card the device takes. This was long before Paywave came on scene. Ofc then they invented other uses for that cashcard, aka Flashpay.. it just nv took off because nobody ever takes the card out of the device, and non carowners used Ezlink which had essentially the same function. After Paywave became the norm, even the ERP devices could be linked to a credit card.. so I’m guessing they’ll have to reinvent Nets Flashpay again to be relevant. In the end, the myriad of payment options boils down to the various types of customer needs and merchant needs. You just need to decide if you like debit or credit, choose the card you want rewards on and use it.. and then have NETs as a fallback if the merchant doesn’t take credit. On a side note, this is why Amex is useless here in SG because the merchant fees are way too high when there are so many other options.
I feel that if you really want to try a real singaporeans local food that we love is the bull frog porridge, if you guys dare to try it I am very sure you will love it as much as we do. Try the one at Geylang lorong 9 and please post the video if you ever go and try it. Thank you.😊
My first time listening to your show, was really nice and enjoying the way you guys talks. especially Geogia and i didn't get your name is it Justin? sorry if i'm wrong. you're just cool. friendly speaking me myself is not sure which way to pay is the best. i would use nets or cash most of the time when shop in supermarket but for topping up petrol in the station always credit cards which will give most discount.
I am local. I use NETs Payment for all my shopping. May be I am more old school😆 some one in her 50s. Shop at Cold Storage if I am very certain not selling at NTUC Fair Price.
Unreal SouIxdrag There’s no such thing. I used to coordinate on the delivery & dispatching of goods that arrived from overseas and there’s no preference on which company will get their goods first as it is all based on the order no. Sometimes, NTUC will have it first, sometimes it’s Giant or Cold Storage or even Shen Shiong. Mustafa Centre is one of the few that has its own supplier & distributor from overseas.
Thanks for this! I tried to down load the app you mentioned for rewards but I think it’s because I’m currently in the uk it wouldn’t find it. I’m moving there soon so will have to look it up for sure!
I had a general frustration when I first moved to Singapore. I grew up in Australia but was born in Singapore and therefore, I am Singaporean. However, because I didn't speak Singlish or have a Singaporean accent way back, I was often called arrogant or standoffish. People didn't realize I could understand Mandarin (but rarely spoke it because it's just not my native language) because I enjoyed learning languages would say so while chatting to each other. They didn't even bother to leave the room. Perhaps they were hoping that I'd react. Didn't matter and I just let them go on. Occasionally, I do use rather heavily accented Mandarin in front of them to spite them. Well, I'm only human. It just irked me that they didn't even try to get to know me and were under the assumption that just because I have a Singaporean ID that I must speak and behave like them. I do have a small group of Singaporean friends (mostly Malays and Indians because they're much friendlier and accepting) that I treasure but it happened so often back then where I worked. Part of me was rather depressed for some time, living here. Now, even though I managed to subconciously develop a Singaporean accent it still doesn't seem to be enough. I do know why but I've seen the double standards and have given up. I, now, usually just speak Japanese and English in Singapore so I don't have to deal with this weird reverse racism. I don't honestly know what else to call it. I reckon it would have been easier to make local friends if I didn't look Asian. So they'd accept that I didn't speak like them.
Janette Yoshika Lowe I’m sad to hear about what u have gone through as I know how toxic certain people(like my aunts and uncles) are in this community but I think that it’s primary the older generations that are like this and are more close minded. I’m 21 this year and most of the people in my generation or younger that I know of are usually more accepting and liberal and willing to overlook these minor details. In fact some would even try to act or sound more white or foreign, usually ironically, that it’d get annoying.
@@keteru3453 I'm really glad to read this and I definitely think it's easier now but I wasn't sure if it was just because I had 'changed' or the world had. Probably a bit of both..
Yea mistake for a singapore local just go to a kopitoam all the food are or should be under eight dollars.and also thats most likely a mistake for some people.
My question for justin notin to do with ur topic.... Who'll win this year's champions league n yours' n his fave team are? I think its man.city to win... Fave team also city
Hi G&J, who may I ask did the subtitles? They r horrible. Use another person if you r still posting your utube. U guys r great & very honest. This is your 2nd posting I watched & I like it. Keep it up.
The credit card thing is big in Australia too! I'd never known anyone to do it in the UK, but everyone seems to here. I also remember being very confused by payment options when I visited Singapore hahah
Flashpay also confused the hell out of me and I still don't know why it exists. I just wanted to tap and go with the money in my bank account (ie Nets). But to use the contactless you have to transfer money into a seperate digital wallet. Like WTF? Why? It makes no sense at all! So I'm still "chip and pining" like it's 1996 if I use Nets. There's meant to finally be Nets "tap" now but you need a nets tap card and a shop needs the right terminal of which there's almost none. 🤦🏻♂️🤷
i’m a restaurant owner and my restaurant accepts nets pay but the only person who’s used it is me to test the process. nets upgraded my nets terminal last year to allow nets qr and nets pay. but i noticed a lot of places still have not upgraded their terminals
WOW! thanks for letting me know about shopbackgo, ill be moving to singapore in the coming months and this would be rlly helpful! can you do a video on how did you move over?? I am currently stuck between which relocation company should i use to have my stuffs brought over to sg...
i moved to Singapore a couple months back and researched on quite a few relocation companies. after getting the different quotes I decided on Moovaz! Their service was p good and reasonable price as well. but perhaps you wanna sell some of your heavier stuff first! :)
I myself a Singaporean, is really hard to make friends here cause Singaporean’s are not v open they don’t really care they like to mind their own business only some rare people are friendly and nice
Ahhh.. I just downloaded shopback go after watching the video but the promo code didn’t pop up until the phone number verification which I conveniently miss because ios has the ‘from message’ function which copies the code and once I tap that I lost $5 sadly...
I'm still using cash or NETs but transition to VISA now cos I can just tap it but I find it so risky if I were to drop my card cos it doesn't require authentication. Do you know if we can use our mobile to tap instead of the card? 😂 Also, I'm still behind on all the QR code payment thing. Never tried even once 😅
Whether you're a foreigner or local, do you have any mistakes to share? 👀

Georgia Caney.....i just want say...i love you
Even Singaporeans stay in Johore!
There is another type of payment called Nets wave as well. If paywave is using credit card, NETS wave is using Yr debit bank card.
Cashcard is not commonly used today except to pay for road tolls through the vehicles’ in-vehicle-unit and for vehicle parking charges.
@@MrBenHaynes
Flashpay can pay for more merchants. Almost all fastfood accepts flashpay over ezlink i think.
I'm a little late to this channel but I just love to hear all the good things about Singapore as a Singaporean 😂 And I love it that you guys love our country. Here's a little breakdown of the payment methods available:
NETS atm card: For you to withdraw money and also use for shopping.
You both are already full fledged Singaporeans. Always looking forward to your weekly vlog. 💯🤙🏼
thank you! ☺️
We've just come back from Singapore. Over ten days we only twice in western food places. Love hawker food centres
1) it can be used like a credit card and sign it
2) you can paywave it
3) it has nets function
4) it can be used as ez-link
5) it deduct straight from your bank account
Lol as a Singaporean, I'm ashamed to say I I also grew up "judging" chendol and avoiding it. The colour, the green chendol itself... 😅 Now I love it!
🤣 tbh I haven't really tried it for idk what reason
I avoided it too since I had a bad experience with the green channel itself that I even gotten nightmares but after awhile and trying it again,it actually wasn't too bad
The last time I visited Singapore was 2009. Enjoy your Vlog as it keeps me current.
Thank a ton for sharing so that we won't repeat the same. One man's loss is another man's gain.
The point about Payment is soo true!!
I just started working in 7-11 and sometime people will say payment by ez-link but really its NETS flash pay. And I still need a second to process if the customer said flash pay or paywave . Same thing with pay lah and pay wave..
I guess after a point you get used to it.
haha oh god so confusing for everyone! 🙈
But ez-link and NETS flash pay are two different companies even thou both started of to compete in the public transport payment market. Cards usually have one or the other, and some outlets only accept one, but not the other.
@@huaiwei yes thats true but some people use the term ezlink for flashpay also as it can be used for MRT. I guess its just a habit.
It can be NETS cards, debit card or credit card, as long as they have the function on the card.
if you have apple devices, just use apple pay. you can pay with your phone or watch, super convenient
Kinda refreshing to watch your videos as a Singaporean.
contactless credit/debit card payment: Visa = paywave, Mastercard = paypass
(so that's why sometimes we conveniently mention paywave or paypass regardless, the cashier will ask master or visa just to be sure)
Might be due to the reason different POS systems are different, then they need to know the "type" of payment to enter into the system.
As was mentioned in the vid, if it's from our bank it's like paying debit, so i'd go "aunty/uncle, pay by nets" (;
The nets part can be confusing, because we have a NETS card.
(then you'd have to stretch your arm out to pay with ez-link which may or may not work)
Essentially, i only have an ez-link (enabled with auto-reload with ezlink app) + a nets cashcard with chip (as a spare).
the Ez-link i use for ERP, most carpark gantries. and if the carpark is unable to read, i'd swap the ezlink card from the IU unit with the cashcard.
NETS generally has no rewards, or cashback options, so i'd just go with ez-link or credit card for retail/ restaurant payments. (;
And if the "aunty" or "uncle" may not understand the difference, then it might be easier to communicate by saying "pay by" paywave, paypass, (throw in master/ visa to help them) or nets.
im 2 mths late but Danial Rosli below explained the backgrounds of the diff. modes of payments pretty well. haha.
Anyways hope this helps, love your vids!
Paywave- mainly for credit cards. flash pay is using nets with a flash pay feature.
So simplify it
Cash
Card: nets, debit, credit
Virtual: Top up option, Credit card
Nets and debit card are the same, pin vs signature.
To sum up
Have cash, nets, credit card. You can pay transport with credit card now. If not have extra ezlink card or a nets flashpay card for transport where you need to top up these. Dont use nets flashpay for anything else.
For me, i break it down into 4 major payment modes:
1. CASH - (That's king!)
2. NETS = EFTPOS = Debit Card (using your current account - current money)
Besides the physical debit card, there is also NETS Flashpay = The other of the 2 providers of debit facilities (Prepay) - Initially NETS started off with a CHIP based cashcard which allowed vehicles to pay for their Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges.
++
3. Credit Card = VISA/Master/AMEX = PAYWAVE/Paypass (using future money)
4. Others:
a. Grabpay - an Evolved version of stored value system from the private hire car company (Debit facility - Prepay)
1. Cash
2. Nets
3. Pay wave
4. Grab pay (to earn garb points)
Of cos there are many others like others have mentioned but in my opinion these few are the simplest and minimal anyone would make payment by.
A lot of the cards behind has logos to show you what payment it can be used for! Like visa/master is paywave and NETS is well basically nets! Do keep a lookout for that!
if you think FairPrice is cheap, you should go to the wet markets. It's literally half the price sometimes.
Shopping at Cold Storage and Fitzpatrick’s is like shopping at Harrod’s Food Halls. Not even Selfridge’s nor Marks & Sparks comes close!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Really helpful as I'm starting to look for roles in Singapore but the thing is hard to convince family to move with me
Why you wanna move from pk to sg?
Use hand sanitizers or wash hands after manning the money.
haha so true 😂
All things considered, this video is about a hundred times better than some of your first videos. Film on.
Look forward to you vlogging with a glass of iced Milo! 😂😂
If u are after airmiles then u shd use rebatemango instead of shopback...u can get airmiles if u want
For some reason, iPhone's NFC function is not really too commercially available for usage; in this instance, topping up the NETS Flashpay card.)
Ever since the Flashpay card was introduced here, it changed my life forever; for the better.
Lol!!! What adventures. Well, glad that u'd since adjusted pretty well. Good 4 u!!!
Well to put it simply,
NETS payments simply requires one to insert a bank card issued by Singapore branches of banks and key in their PIN code (as you would at an ATM). The amount will be deducted immediately (if you have sufficient amount in the bank.
Flashpay is operated by NETS, which essentially works the same as an EZ-link card, but requires you to top-up credits into your Flashpay e-wallet account. (it's a whole mess, rarely anyone use it)
Then there's the debit/credit cards using chip/magnetic strip/contactless.
Feels so weird yet so natural all these Ang mohs rattling off all these local brands
totally agree about not just having expat friends!!!
Georgia, since you've always been a health enthusiast, and we enjoyed your grocery shopping videos, you should so do one at Scoop (think you'd definitely enjoy their organic selection at either of their Great World City store or the other one at Tanglin Mall).
Yes I love scoop!!
NETS: deducting payment from bank account using a bank NETS card combining with a PIN
Debit card: a NETS card that can make purchases online
Credit card: card distributed from bank allowing the use of future money to pay for current purchase, and then pay the accumulated amount at the end of the month
Pay wave: function of credit/debit card, tap them on the machine to deduct payment from respective accounts
Cash: paper and round metals that have value on it
Grabpay/fomo pay/wechat pay: mobile payment that uses debit/credit card to top up the private companies app accounts and then use them to make payment for certain perks
Flashpay: payment mode tied to a card deriving from NETs to compete with the other contactless payment (paywave, grabpay, ezlink)
Ezlink: a private company card that can store values when it is topped up, can be used to make payment to take public transport or certain purchases
Paylah: mobile payment from DBS/POSB
Visa/master hard cash and paylah/paynow gets you everywhere in sg.
Paywave. Tap and go. Nets u have to key in number.
I always get confused with paywave and flashpay
@@havenprice
Flashpay need to topup credit.paywave direct deduct from bank acct.
1st option is to always use your crefit card. You're chalking up points. The rest are the equivalent of paying with cash. You get nothing back.
1. Ez-link
• Can be used for trains and buses
• Accepted in selected locations like 7-11
• Your student card issued by your school is this!
2. NETS Flashpay
• Exactly like ez-link, but can be used at places that accept NETS Flashpay too
• YOU MUST TOP UP THE CARD TO USE IT
• Does not take directly from your bank account
• Tap and go, does not require PIN or signature
3. NETS
• Most widely accepted form of card payment
• Immediately reflected in your bank account AKA once the money’s gone, it’s gone
• Requires card to be inserted and PIN to be entered
4. Credit (Contact)
• Every transaction takes time to process (can be cancelled!)
• Needs to be swiped or stuck into a machine
• Does not take ANY money from your account
• Can buy stuff that is more than what you actually have in your account
• Payment is made at the end of the month in a bill
• Comes with interest
• May have membership fees
• Comes with benefits, like membership points, discounts on things like phone bills, dining, movies, airline miles, etc to offset the fees
• Requires signature for purchases of higher value
• Can come with minimum spend to validate card each month
5. Debit (Contact)
• Exactly the same as credit!
• Limited to what’s in your account
• If there is no money left your account, transactions can be rejected
• Can have no minimum spend
• No interest
• Fewer discounts and promotions compared to credit
6. Paywave/PayPass (Contactless)
• Paywave is for Visa and PayPass is for mastercard
• CONTACTLESS, tap and go and no need to sign
• Has all the exact same benefits of credit and debit
• IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS CREDIT AND DEBIT
• No need to set up
• No need to top up to use
• It’s as if you stuck the card into the machine! Just tap and go
Features like Credit and Debit can be used in Singapore and overseas once activated, where as NETS is a Singapore only system
Chicken porridge is my comfort food esp when I’m sick. And now living in Europe, I 😭 when I don’t have chicken porridge when I’m sick
Agree, i live in the Pacific. Make friends with the locals. Expats just whinge about first world problems.
Great content! Youve earned my subscription.
Cold Storage is the only supermarket that stocks good cheeses! I don’t understand how expats like you two could shop for groceries elsewhere.
Safest option is paywave with your credit card
yes please pluck us off the streets and make friends with us!!!
I feel that if you really want to try a real singaporeans local food that we love is the bull frog porridge, if you guys dare to try it I am very sure you will love it as much as we do. Try the one at Geylang lorong 9 and please post the video if you ever go and try it. Thank you.😊

definitely love using shopbackgo! gave me lots of savings.
If you want the cheapest and freshest produce, the best place is still the nearest neighbourhood wet market!
My first time listening to your show, was really nice and enjoying the way you guys talks. especially Geogia and i didn't get your name is it Justin? sorry if i'm wrong. you're just cool. friendly speaking me myself is not sure which way to pay is the best. i would use nets or cash most of the time when shop in supermarket but for topping up petrol in the station always credit cards which will give most discount.
you know you're adapted to singapore life when you start talking about shopback Go
I am local.
I use NETs Payment for all my shopping.
May be I am more old school😆
some one in her 50s.
Shop at Cold Storage if I am very certain not selling at NTUC
Fair Price.
Nets not visa so you can track you exact balance cos sometimes pay wave here n there you have no idea where ur money gone to
I was impressed that my Ezilink card can be used at the pool!
lmao🤣
I heard some ppl saying. The supply chain in sg, Cold Storage will receive first, follow by ntuc finest, Fairprice, giant n follow on.
I used to love NETS before I started using credit card. Now that Samsung Pay is so useful I never use my credit card or NETS anymore lol.
Thanks for this! I tried to down load the app you mentioned for rewards but I think it’s because I’m currently in the uk it wouldn’t find it. I’m moving there soon so will have to look it up for sure!
i love videos like these!! ❤️
yay ☺️
You should try favepay too! It has cashback as well haha
this kept me aware , i’m still 18 and i’m planning to move out :(
I had a general frustration when I first moved to Singapore.
What banks are the same in Singapore? Which ones would I be able to use from the UK in Singapore?
Yea mistake for a singapore local just go to a kopitoam all the food are or should be under eight dollars.and also thats most likely a mistake for some people.
the food sucks though
@@aqua123670 depends what area do you go to or you just have a rich taste bud
My question for justin notin to do with ur topic.... Who'll win this year's champions league n yours' n his fave team are? I think its man.city to win... Fave team also city

@@rafhanahraco4935 the next 2 champs league not this years but is still investigating not 100% confirmed
I use PayWave a lot. Still not comfortable with all those QR codes payments :)
Paradox of choice lol, so many payment method it only dampens my retail experience.
when I first started to work I also spent a large amount on eating out. but that was at home :)
v easy mistake to make!!
how many bank card did you own?
can you talk more about shopback go ?
i don't know what is flashpay either
Haha right!? So confusing!!🙈😂
i’m a restaurant owner and my restaurant accepts nets pay but the only person who’s used it is me to test the process. nets upgraded my nets terminal last year to allow nets qr and nets pay. but i noticed a lot of places still have not upgraded their terminals
You guys almost a local!
WOW! thanks for letting me know about shopbackgo, ill be moving to singapore in the coming months and this would be rlly helpful! can you do a video on how did you move over?? I am currently stuck between which relocation company should i use to have my stuffs brought over to sg...
i moved to Singapore a couple months back and researched on quite a few relocation companies. after getting the different quotes I decided on Moovaz! Their service was p good and reasonable price as well. but perhaps you wanna sell some of your heavier stuff first! :)
@@euthaliabaarda6282 hey thanks! i'll check them out
I myself a Singaporean, is really hard to make friends here cause Singaporean’s are not v open they don’t really care they like to mind their own business only some rare people are friendly and nice
that's strange...is it because you're not as open too?
MOONSUN is MARRIED i never said I was one of the not so open ones
Is there any food that you guys haven't tried yet? Seems like most foreigners don't dare to try chicken feet or offal porridge or bone marrow. 😁
tried chicken feet but didn't like I'm afraid haha
Just use Paywave. Just tap and go.
Singaporean here also confused. Paywave max amt for payment $100 true or false? Does that mean above $100 purchase of goods I gotta use NETS?
Abv the 100 sgd, you would have to sign
I thought bank card rewards were a common thing
Which is your favourite team in the EPL?
Ahhh.. I just downloaded shopback go after watching the video but the promo code didn’t pop up until the phone number verification which I conveniently miss because ios has the ‘from message’ function which copies the code and once I tap that I lost $5 sadly...
If you email them to let them know I’m sure they’ll be happy to credit the bonus x
Thanks Georgia, I will try that out. Btw, I really like watching your videos, informative and entertaining. Cheers! ❤️
Thank you for sharing. Interesting.....
I'm still using cash or NETs but transition to VISA now cos I can just tap it but I find it so risky if I were to drop my card cos it doesn't require authentication. Do you know if we can use our mobile to tap instead of the card? 😂
Also, I'm still behind on all the QR code payment thing. Never tried even once 😅
haha omg I literally only just figured out how QR code works this week 😂
@@GeorgiaCaney No kidding! The payment or just simply QR code?
Wow how much do you need to spend to get a cashback of over $2000???
Would move to sg if it wasn't expensive
