James I repair conventional and truss repairs for a living. Throw a scab on the other side of that rafter that goes at least two feet on each side of that notch. You can secure it with those Headlok screws every 6” OC.

Agree. For my two labs, when they were biting as puppies, we would turn around and ignore them for a few minutes until they stopped biting. Showed them their behavior wasn't acceptable. It's also a phase every puppy goes through.
The crate should be their happy place to relax.

Love the video Sir James! Clovis is an absolutely amazing dog ❤ He is getting so big already!
I've fostered several shelter dogs for my many years, and have dealt with many puppy nibbles. When the pups would start chewing/play biting me, I would put my fingers deeper into their mouth (while saying NO firmly) giving them a negative experience without hurting them. So each time they would bite or chew on me, they would associate a negative experience when biting, and they would stop eventually. I don't know if this is the "right" thing to do, but in my experience it worked very well. Consistency is key. A suggestion; don't use his crate as a "punishment" for something as it is his safe place, keep his crate a positive and happy spot for him. Sometimes ignoring him can be "punishment" enough.
I love the "sit, stay" you are teaching him, he (and you!!) are doing amazing!! You 2 are building an incredible bond ❤
I applaud all the hard work you're doing on the homestead, you really are building something incredible. Keep up the good work, STRENGTH AND HONOR!!

By using the command “wait” or “stay” before using “free dog” you teach him an important command “wait” which you will use often. Really allows you to control your dog of leash. Love the videos

Depends on how you train. I had some professionals do a board and train for my dog for 3 weeks. They said its better if with every command the "stay" or "wait" is implied, and then you use "free" so they know when they can stop doing a command like "sit". For example, mine has a very useful command called "climb" where she has to go to her dog bed and wait till I say "free". This is handy when I know I have people coming to the door and I don't want her there bombarding all of us while they come in.

James, if I can make one suggestion about your new REALINK SECURITY CAMERA it would be to camouflage it by taping off the important bits and painting it. If you have unwanted guests you don't want them to easily see what's catching them in real time.
If you notice trailcams they're almost always camouflaged.

Yeah gave me the idea that he could set them up and do a live stream focusing on an area that he’s working on that week, would sort of be like living on that big brother show but it could be a cool live stream for people to log into and watch should they want something to roll in the background while working or doing house work. He would t even need to speak over. Just let it roll and then release the weekly vids as well.

    • @janosszabo98
      @janosszabo98 35 хвилин тому

It can be used both ways. Having CCTV all over the place in plain sight is arguably better. Would you rather have footage of your unwanted visitors, or let them know they're being recorded and don't have any unwanted visitors in the first place? Maybe a mix of hidden and some "out there" would be best of both worlds.

  • @kerrynthomas9602

Hi James, dogs (puppies) yap/bark to let other puppies know they play/bite too hard. We mimicked this with our dogs, e.g. ow! In a high pitch strong voice. With this we also turn our back to them. This lets them know we are ignoring (no attention) to unwanted behaviour. Lastly, dogs learn bite pressure by about 5 months of age. So this is why teaching puppies soft mouthing is soooooo important, because their muscle memory for ‘locks-in’ - for want of a better term, by around this time. A short time for training. I learnt this recently with our youngest dog - now 2 years. Whatever you choose, consistency in your trading method is key. My husband and myself love catching up with you and Clovis every Saturday pm (Perth, Australia). Thank you for letting us be a part of your world. Sending you both much love, Kerryn and David

I've heard this works. Dogs don't typically want to hurt their owners, so they may be more gentle if they realize that they are being too rough. From what I remember, it can teach them that humans are quite delicate/have delicate skin. Although with my own dog, he would forget this when he was a pup whenever the zoomies took over.

Tornado Level 5 rated woodshed! Get that pump spray bottle and use double boiled linseed oil to preserve the wood. For the biting pup, he's teething. With my lab I gave him a frozen dog toy, but if he continued to bite a tap on the nose and a very firm NO BITING. He learned within a few days. It doesn't last forever, but it just feels like it.

For the log store, I would:
    - Add the cross-bracing you were suggesting, then add spaced vertical or horizontal panelling onto the cross-beams on both the sides and the back, to protect the logs from (rain / snow) but also allow airflow.
    - Cut down a few of the smaller trees at the back of the log store to prevent snow sliding down on the roof from forming a massive pile too close to the building, give it some distance it will fall away to first.
    - Consider using the area behind the log store to store your ATV/trailers/power tools (etc) under a tarp there over winter until you can get the tool shed built.
As an aside; something you should consider in relation to batteries is that they store a huge amount of energy, where if they fail, it's not uncommon that this results in fires. Given you seem to be in the middle of nowhere and have already had the tent fire; I figured I'd point out that in an ideal world, you'd keep your batteries in a separate 'building' to the tool shed (and / or) cabin to reduce the risk to your other property. When you build the tool shed, it may be worth considering building a separate small weatherproof shelter around a fire-rated metal box, built on a concrete pad, spaced away from the primary buildings on the homestead, in which you store the batteries/chargers for most of your power-related equipment (especially any extremely large capacity lithium ion batteries). If you need power distributing between any two locations, it's always possible to lay conduit underground through a gravel channel and get some outdoor rated electrical cabling between the buildings, constructed out of appropriate fire insulative materials, so that a fire from any battery storage can't spread easily to other important locations on the homestead. I would install some conduit to a nearby location through the concrete pad anyway, just in case you want distributed power later, even if you don't immediately want this facility now (just make sure it can't get rained into).
Loving the progress, had a blast binge watching through the whole series over the last week!

I think it's much easier with Clovis. Dogs crave attention, so when he bites, don't engage with him. Instead, firmly say a command like "NO." Be consistent with this. When he calms down, stops, or wanders off, say "Good boy" and give him attention, but without signaling that it's playtime now.

  • @sharonb.9128
    @sharonb.9128 Годину тому +2

Great video. What works the most for us is the “leave it” command and to immediately ignore him. Try not to repeat the command or give him any of the attention he is demanding. The instant he STOPS jumping and biting and presents a calm behavior you, reward that state with a “good boy” or rub.

LOVE your videos, LOVE Clovis!❤️. I had a big English Mastiff that did the biting thing as a pup. He grew to be 190 pounds so it had to be nipped in the bud. Dogs don’t understand punishment, I constantly redirected him, played fetch, tug of war etc. told him no when he nipped but then really praised him when I gave him the toy immediately after his little bites. It worked for him. He was a gentle giant and I miss him everyday. Good luck. And please don’t use his crate as punishment. That’s his safe place.

  • @georgieoldham8322
    @georgieoldham8322 2 години тому +3

James, when King Clovis bites, you have to redirect him with a different stimulus such as a stick or a chew proof toy. Eventually, he will stop, but he is teething, and this is expected puppy behavior. Redirecting him is always the best option.

Hi James. I'm Niko from Norway. I'm thrilled to follow your channel. I've never thought that I ever was to try to advise you, but I couldn't help but notice something that you might want to consider. When screwing those floorboards, you only use one screw in the middle of the board. I fear that when those boards dry up even more, those boards might start to curl up around the middle point. Of course the curvature of the wood will play a part, but just to be sure I think I might would've consider to put down to screws in each side of the board instead of one in the middle. Just a thought from the other side of the pond. Stay strong, be firm, and give Clovis my best.

  • @msteele2214
    @msteele2214 Годину тому +1

There are several things you can do to help with the biting. When the dog starts going for your hand, have a chew toy nearby and place the chew toy in his mouth instead of your hand. That way, he knows you chew on the toy and not on the hand. You can also just tell him no and if he continues to do it, walk away. You shouldn't punish dogs by placing it in the crate though. The crate is his safe space. You don't want the dog to think that the crate is a form of punishment but rather a safe or sleeping space.

Great video! When you’re teaching him not to bite. Be firm with your no. You were kinda waving your fingers/hand and not reaffirming your no. It looked like you were playing. That’s why he thought you were playing. You remove the hand a just in a deeper tone say no bites. But the putting him up is a good way to train. Thanks for posting. Love the series. God bless ❤

18:44 you can make a loud yelping noise (fake or real, depending on how hard he bites haha) and then turn your back and ignore him. When he stops biting then you can play and praise, and if he bites again yelp and ignore. This area behind the woodshed would provide a great place to park the quad and trailers. Reference Clovas and the stones, you can't stop him eating 100% of them, all you can do is try your best to keep him away from them.

Hey, just responding to the biting issue. I've had a lot of success just correcting (Cesar Millan style) with sound and a "hand poke" to the neck then redirecting to what the puppy should bite like a toy, rawhide stick or just a stick. Not a fan of using the crate as punishment - that's not a negative association you want to make. My suggestion is to binge watch Cesar and then you can troubleshoot any potential issue quickly and efficiently with your leadership skills. With your energy it should be fairly easy. Wishing you best success! PS please give King Clovis a muzzle kiss for me ! He's gorgeous!

I have ordered the first book in the series and I am looking forward to it. Did you mean to type warriors rather than worriers? From James description it sounds like King Alfred had to be surrounded by warriors not worriers.

Hey James, loving the fireshed build! If you want an architect's view, I wouldn't put any bracings or support for those overhangs in the back, for now. I know in Canada snow load is serious, but that's a pretty sheltered spot so the load would be less, and on the tip the snow will just fall off; you also have a sturdy structure and you put a lot of rafters, so the load can be easily spread. If you put some bracings or vertical supports you'd make that space less accessible, and you could end up using it less... right now it's aperfect for firewood storage!
I'd say leave it like that, it's stronger than it looks! If you really see that it's tipping and trying to "rip off" the other side from the beam, you can then come in and reinforce afterwards!

Im not an expert, but tried the wood burning on garden box. I noticed it was easier to burn by angling the torch and working towards the end. The torch starts heating the wood in front of you as you move along the plank. We love the show.

Redirect the biting. Keep a toy in your pocket. My dog got so used to having a toy put in his mouth when he got nippy that he’d bite and then run find a toy. Now he brings a toy with him when he’s excited, such as greeting people at the door. Clovis is a beautiful puppy and you’re doing a great job. Oh, also, rather than a generic no, I say, “ no bite” or “ no biting”.

Second comment because why not we're live chatting at this point. The gap behind the woodshed could be amazing if you rig solar panels on the roof as a spot to put all your batteries etc until you have a spot for them in the main cabin. Can enclose and insulate a small portion assuming you dont have room in the guest cabin.

Hello James. For Clovis, I think that when he gets a little too excited, you need to divert his attention through play (searching for objects, etc.). This worked very well for my Rottweiler, who then searched for avalanche victims, but who as a teenager did a lot of mischief!!! Best wishes.

A birds mouth joint on the rafters would be much stronger over the long term. Measure one and cut them all. Fast and easy. He would also save hundreds of dollars on brackets and fasteners.

When your puppy bites, exclaiming loudly “ouch” then a firm “no bite”…..when puppies play amongst themselves, they let each other know when play becomes too rough/painful by yelping/whining. Mother dogs/cats are vocal and physical when correcting their litters. Be consistent, no mixed signals.

Love the channel, James, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the wood burner. Your stove should be burning efficiently and hot enough so that you DO NOT see exhausting from the top. If you're seeing smoke, you're burning unseasoned wet wood, which will build up creosote in your pipes and eventually lead to an unsafe system. Grab a wood moisture meter and try to only burn wood between 15-20 percent. I promise you will see a huge difference. Also, look up the "Top Down Fire" method for starting your fires. You may love it. Thanks for the content!

Hi james...u should bring your side protection fence, move it to front side of cabin to stop dog clovis getting to side stones.....then get deck in situe add a side rail on right side and continue protection fence from corner of it. Again blocking off access all stones.
Say sit then wait...when putting dog food down, repeating wait...before free dog unleashed lol.😂
Definately use rear of wood shed for extra storage...adding cross beam and couple inground posts should be sufficient. Love that giant shed!
Grab a couple of pallets when out and tidy n stack all lumber useable wood in protection area...but put ourside area too. Tidy up before big winter...safer and tidyer for all. In one place then cover with tarp.
You could also put pallets under that rear overhang on woodshed...free pallets, to use as dryer better storage...either wood scraps or extra lumber or even more fire wood.
    Keep up the goodness.
    Peace.

This was a great one!!!🥰 James, you were in true "James" fashion in this episode! Wildly Entertaining... pun intended! 😉 LOVE how happy you look! Your smile is magical!!😊
That wood shed is solid AF!! Great work, man! 🔥 The extra length on the roof beams is definitely a gift from the Gods.. you should sleep on some ideas before any cutting. I think your idea to add posts beneath the back ends is a great one. You may be able to use it for some unforeseen "out of sight" storage area in the future.
I cannot believe I have been addicted to this channel for an entire year already!!!🥰 Happy Anniversary, @wildhomestead 🍻🎉 You've created a Wolfpack around the world and that is no small thing!🐺 You've got a squad, should you ever need one!!
Blessings to you and Clovis! Strength and Honor! ⚡💪🛡👑🐕🏡

James ..... there are thousands of "correct" ways to train a dog. Not every method works with every dog, it all depends on the personality of the dog.
The biggest and most important thing is "CONSISTENCY " in what you "say" and how you "react". Consistency will allow the dog to associate your words and actions with his "current" action (what he is currently doing). For me, the most important things are "KEY" words:
    No
    Stay
Stop (I use the word freeze)
Bad Dog (only use when really bad)
My dogs would usually hang their head if I used "bad dog". For biting it was "no bite" (simple sharp words are best for displin). If he continues, a finger tap on the end of the nose usually gets the dogs attention but again use words (no bite). If he needs a "timeout", designate and spot for him to stay (this could take time and evergy on you to accomplish this) but be consistent in your actions. The tone of your voice is also a tool in training.

    Hey man,
thanks for another great video today. Always enjoying them.
Clovis really cheers me up, such a wonderful dog. We had a Labrador for 15 years and in the beginning we had the same issues with biting and jumping up on us. To stop her we were taught to say “no” with a deep voice and to turn around and show our backs on her when she was getting too wild, that worked pretty well for us. But sometimes, you know… kids just want and have to play wildly😊Cheers from Hamburg

Not sure about the single screw in the middle of the floor planks. The planks are likely to cup due to being only fixed in the middle. I'd pull in the single screws out and replace them with two at each fixing location around an inch and a quarter in from each edge. Or you could potentially add three at each location since they are quite wide planks, which will also save you having to pull out the mid screw.

Hey James, our dog used to do the same thing all the time and still can when she gets excited. We find she especially loves gloves and seems to maybe think that the gloves are a toy or a game. We make her submit by making her sit still. A firm “no” and “sit” and she has quickly learned to reset. It works every time. Took a bit of practice for us both but it works. Good luck.

Hey James, Clovis might be eating the pebbles due to his current diet. Long story short, our dog started eating pebbles also when we bought a different type of dog food when we arrived at our vacation destination, mind you that our dog was older than Clovis but his new food didn’t have the nutrients he was used to. Found his usual food and all was back to normal. Good luck, keep up the great work!!

I have a high-energy dog, Lab/Border Collie. When she was in her bitey stage, her trainer recommended that I grab her like a fish. Hold her lower jaw for a few seconds. Dogs bite up, they can't bite down. After a couple weeks she stopped biting. Whatever training you do, reps, reps, reps. Keep up the good work on this channel. It's great.

Your floor in the woodshed will get "cupping" with only a centre screw. Leave the rafters long use 3 support posts vertically with a horizontal support, this leaves you lots of room to enter from back or sides. My only other thought is a nail pouch :) saves the pockets of you coats. Love the videos and of course Clovis. Be safe and best wishes from lovely Pembroke On.

Hi from the UK 🇬🇧 my best tip for bitting is for you to yelp as a pup would in its litter if a sibling bit them. Its dog language he already understands. This helps dogs to learn about the pressure of their bite. Its definitely the fastest way to stop biting.
P.s I love watching your videos with my pug King Arthur. He watches intensely now Clovis is with you😂

The training is good, and as one viewer suggested, turning your back as well. Same calm demeanour. He is a puppy, and this is common play. I'm happy to see you.
The cabin and woodshed looks great. Not sure I would pare down a 2x6 for the stove pipe but ok.
On your wood shed I would be inclined for the overhang to put in a vertical post for support.
