The ironic thing is you’re playing Verdun’s soundtrack over this game and Verdun is still somewhat alive with the Devs expanding to Tannenberg and Isonzo.
Verdun and Tannenburg don’t have a lot of players, but Izonso is doing pretty good. It’s easy to find a full match at any time of day in the US server. The EU server also fills several full games daily

The BR1 server hosts a game every Saturday 1pm eastern time & 10am pacific
So...the usual thought of launching post scriptum..i mean Squad44 a few months after an update^^
Devs needs to unify Post Scriptum, Beyond the Wire and Squad in a single engine game.
Post Scriptum and BTW should probably be combined to one game, but Squad should stay its own thing.
That wont work… all of them would use TONS of Space to download and run

This actually not a bad idea. it's odd why devs haven't thought of this.
The fact I found out about it years later says a lot.

It was NEVER advertised to me or my friend group.
The game died for a lot of reasons, but not most of the ones you mentioned. These are the main reasons:
1. Lack of content at first/extremely slow updates
2. Updates during EA that broke the game and took months to fix
3. Poor optimization that got worse with every update and was never addressed.
Also if you want to play the game with real ppl, we do play sessions every saturday at 1pm EST. We get anywhere from 20-60 players

As someone who was an alpha tester, I can vouch for these. ESPECIALLY the third one.
The optimization is what made me refund, my PC is nothing special but should be able to beyond the wire no problem but it was absolutely unplayable no matter how much tinkering I did.
Disappointing they never got it solved, it had the potential to be the best online WW1 milsim/shooter but they fumbled it

Its abandonment was one of the great tragedies of Videogame development .
Those fights were great. Lots of memorable gaming moments. Sad ot didnt took off.
I played this on release and it was amazing, at its peak idve played it all the time if it hadn’t died
yeah same, i remember running around with the artillery luger was the craziest thing ever on a full server. And all the officers actually role playing making it so much more immersive, game was actually good then suddenly poof its gone.

1.0 release was botched thats why it died, devs stopped caring. It was not because it was a ww1 game
I bought this game two days ago for 9.99 I played 7 minutes it was a beautiful game same situation 3 player in one lobby and just 1 in the other the bots were wonky and aim bot like a mf but what little I played it was fun
Play it on Saturday. There's a discord group that plays it on saturday 1pm est. theres a sunday event too but i dont know the details cos i dont joint sundays

I can't remember what youtuber it was, but he would go play dead games and he found out a little group I think on Fridays would play it with a sizable server.
Are you referring to UA-cam Channel Boogie5? His community organises BTW sessions along with Squad 44/Post Scriptum .

They murdered the game with updates really, when the British troops were introduced the game ran perfectly then the performance got worse and worse until they abandonned it.
Oh and they massively increased the sway of weapons to promote the melee which was not the best to be nice with them.
That's how you kill a game and make the community leave, make it laggy and hardly playable.
I understand that there's a North American server running organised sessions on Saturdays.
I waited so long for a game like this, it was supposed to be my magnum opus.
Instead it peaked at like 2000 players and almost immediately died

The biggest mistake they did was not making the game play like Verdun. Game would definitely have had a different playerbase if that was the case.
I'm glad I got to spend launch day playing this.. it was awesome fun, but it never reached that height again.

This game when it came out was great, out of the three games in the series it ran the best on launch, and it was fun, just died almost immediately.
I got this game through games to grunts and then never touched it.
I wish it didn't fail. I loved the idea of the gritty muddy battlefields. I remember I got a fully lobby playing with a beyond the wire discord, it was so fun I remember me and 3 people were running in circles around a french tank throwing grenades at it
I swear I already saw a video titled like this. Anyway, I hope one day to see people posting videos about this games comeback
This game had such tremendous potential but the devs ruined it because they just could not make up their minds about what direction to take it in. They seemed to want to cater to the Squad/PS crowd, but the map design was too linear to really facilitate that style of gameplay. The maps favored Red Orchestra / Rising Storm 2 style, fast-paced gameplay, not slow, methodical, cooperative gameplay. I remember being especially annoyed when the game punished you for not staying close to your squad leader by adding a respawn timer penalty for dying more than 100m away, but meanwhile the squad leader role was a more logistically-oriented role that required them to hang back from the action, setting up rallies. So you'd effectively be punished for pushing the point and dying while the squad leader was off somewhere behind the lines.
And then there was the constant see-sawing with the weapon sway. I remember when the game first launched in early access, the weapon sway was ludicrously over-the-top, but people liked it because it forced you to close engagement distances and rely on melee. But enough people complained that the devs reduced it, and then eventually removed it entirely, which made the game feel a lot more casual, but annoyed the pre-existing player base, so a lot of them left, and then they brought back the weapon sway, so the casual players left, too.
And then they fumbled the heavily-requested vehicle implementation by effectively turning them into killstreak rewards.
Just an identity crisis all the way down.

I'd be tempted to say that multiplayer games in general are just too much of a risk these days. There isn't enough players to go around, and if you're covering a niche genre, then it's even worse.
I bought the game after it was dead without knowing it is dead and now I’m stuck with it because it’s past the time I could return it. Paid full price for it.
There's always videos about beyond the wire talking about some narrative about how its the games fault for not lasting and dying, but i never hear anything about the biggest problem. How are they gonna charge $40 dollars for an MP only game with no content besides the main game modes. $20-$30 maybe would have been fair but how are you gonna convince your friends to pay $40 for this and actually convince them? Idk man.
Yes, above all the issues in the video, I do think the price was the issue.
The game was good but not enough players. Big Red One hosted several servers and kept one up for the longest time. We still have one most saturdays up for our members but unfortunatly its not a played game.
I bought this on (early access) release day. It was fun while it lasted. Maybe it will come back...

No. If they have to play WW1 shooter, they'd rather play Battlefield 1 instead, because that's much more satisfying experience for them. "Realistic WW1 FPS game" is not FUN ENOUGH to play. There are obvious reasons why most FPS games covers modern warfare or WW2 and why DICE added so much automatic armaments and unrealistically fast tanks compared to the real Great War-they are fun to play. I played Beyond the Wire right after they let the game at steam, and after 30 minutes of playing, I refunded and went back to play BF1 and Verdun. It was total disaster, pointless and felt too empty. I think they had to adopt bot-player combined squad system of Enlisted rather than using format of SQUAD.

Here’s my rebuttal, why would I play beyond the wire if I own isonzo and verdun? Isonzo looks and plays like a AAA game, I think it’s gonna be really hard to beat that. Unless beyond the wire completely overhauled the way it plays and made it less like squad and more like verdun I don’t see myself ever giving it a try.

Hi I just came on here to inform that these video titles are silly, clickbait.
A game is dead when no-one is playing, not when youtubers decide it will make a good cliockbait video.
I see too many of these kind of videos I'm not intrested in thier fatalistic point of view, I'd rather watch something where it's talked about the players who still enjoy a game, dispite player numbers.
Note: I haven't played Beyond the Wire, and I haven't played 1 second of this video either.
Needs optimization for new players to stick the concept is great art work yada yada needs a dedicated team like sqaud 44 they are all on their own time meaning they have other jobs aswell just pure dedication. While I do believe Beyond the Wire had some good ideas and some solid gameplay, sadly I do not think they will do anything with it. OWI already acquired Redstone Interactive and the staff is integrated into OWI. Plus OWI has 3 other games under its umbrella with Squad, Squad 44, and Starship Troopers. If they wanted to fix the game and revive it they would of started it awhile ago. I do believe that this game should of been taken off Steam awhile ago since all support has been pulled the the community is pulling out.

Disliked because you called Squad an utter success.
All of OWI's products are copy pastes, not even good ones at that, like BTW in this case. It all started with Squad, the way they rushed to release 1.0 in an unfinished state. Later bought by a chineese company, this doesnt add to their portfolio.
Honestly Squad is in version 8 or 9 or some shit but it feels like a 1.0 with some DLC factions added.
The game has done expanding, at best there will be new factions, but no new mechanics or new features. The player base is dying. They just want to milk the server rental fees and be done with it.
Also you mentioned leadership and ranking in their games. Its pointless, its useless. Squad leaders do what they want. Commander is just there to call in off map support strikes as he sees fit. No punishment and no endorsement system. No reputation. You can be the shittiest leader and nobody will know.
Communication in game and team play, is only as good as the leaders themselves want it to be. If you encounter a non cooperative team, lmao good luck.
This could have been ArmA and Battlefield killer but they literally fucked it.

My biggest problem with this game, besides trashy performance... Was the gunplay itself, I can't land a freaking bullet on anyone ever, now this might not be a problem for a tach-shoot player, but it bugles me that every time I pop out my head I got put down right immediately, Like bro!

I wished I refunded the game. The game seemed awesome a few years ago and I bought it, I think the worst thng of this game is the performance, Its horribly optimized. I first played the game on an old GPU and played at 30 fps lowest graphics. It was shit but I played it. I only played 1 match with 30 people and it was decently enjoyable.
recently I got an RTX 2080 and I decided to check it out again as that 1 match was too long for a refund. Even with a decent GPU, the game struggled at medium, and looked shit. there was not a single server. Kind of sad
wasted 40 euros to this game lol
