Your videos are great for those looking for a tile setter.... however, I'm not a contractor and do work as a handyman. Often as yourself, correcting others poor workmanship. In fact, I get more repair work at times then new builds. Even though just a "handyman", I am meticulous and do things right the first time. So... I did notice you talked about Kerdi not being suitable for a shower pan? Why not? A mortar bed, using a kerdi drain and kerdi over mortar... and extending it up the walls 6" or so makes for a waterproof pan. Of course, I use kerdi ban along seems, and kerdi corners to complete the project. And the curb is also covered. ..etc.etc. But, I'm curious to know why you don't like Kerdi, or in THIS shower for instance. Also... I see you show your work in this video, but not all videos. I'd like to see more of your work, and the end result. Simply because I see that in this video, that at min 13:34 there's tiles that don't meet up squarely in their corners. And you have a tad bit of lippage at the transition trim in the doorway. Then at min 14:26 your top cap tiles grout lines don't match the vertical grout lines. At 14:31... you have lippage from the wall face tile, to the side tile on the top row but not on second row. At 15:07, it shows the tile above the glass stripe doesn't match any grout line of wall tile below the stripe. At min 19:43 your top row of tile grout line matches with the trim tile, yet isn't staggered like the wall tile, when it should be. Trim grout line should match second row tile. At min 19:52 you did stagger the tile above stripe, but did not stagger the border. Not following the same pattern as the wall shown previously. At 20:56 your grout lines where the wall/seat tiles hit the floor tiles are varying. From thin (with small tile pc), to thin, to extra wide grout line where it's too thin for tile yet makes a wide grout line. At 22:27-47, there seems to be grout line issues and lippage (where you clean the haze with your hand). ... I could go on, but you get the idea. Not everyone's work is impeccable. Especially at the pace you re-did that shower. It would have taken me a few more days I'm sure. And I'm not sure I'd have done any better. However, it's easy to pick someone else's work apart from the comfort of an office chair (so please understand, it's not to be an ass... just call it as I see it). You do good work, and I like to see the finished product. Not so I can critique it (I know it may seem so), but because you have good ideas and I too like to share my own ideas. Combining other's ideas, with your own... sure makes for a great result. Keep up the videos, and taking the time to do so. How you find the time to do a video, is beyond me. I seem to spread myself too thin (not enough hours in a day), and barely get time to take pictures. I sure hate when I forget before pics!
Knowing that they messed up pretty much everything, including the electricity, I myself would now be afraid to know how they did the plumbing behind the wall. For some reason I'm foreseeing major leakages everywhere.
As a contractor of 30 years that does quality work myself, this type of quality and screw ups are more common than people know, there is an army of wanna be contractors out there all too willing to promise you a good job and deliver garbage for a cheap price, they can only do this because they are paying people with no skills, it is common sense, you get what you pay for. You still can get screwed paying a high price, best thing to do is look at previous work and referrals, when you are dealing with all of this tile expense, wasted labor costs, it is just a shame and a big mess, I would take a sledge hammer to the whole works and start over.
I really liked your video. I learned a lot from you walking through and pointing out all the horrible mistakes those other knuckle heads made. I'm a carpenter mainly but have done some simple tile setting. Your finished product was amazing! I'm gonna check out more of your videos.
No shame in promoting yourself especially since you do such nice work. I'm happy to hear you're getting calls for work because of the videos. Your videos are very helpful for those of us looking to do our own work and for those who have had work done that went wrong. Too bad your not in Southern California.
Thanks for the compliment...I'm actually a Southern California native ! Been in Atlanta just over 20 years, economy & cost of living is cheaper here ;-)
Imo, the power outlets at 16:20 still dosen't have enough tile surface to sit on. Imo you cut the hole in the tile too large. The bottom of each outlet looks ok (plenty of tile under it to support the tab), but the top tabs have hardly any tile underneath them. postimg.org/image/iuzlbp78v/ I understand that Decora style outlets have the mounting holes for the cover plate near the top and bottom of the outlet instead of in the middle, but you could have left a bit more tile surface at the top to allow the top tabs to have a better surface area to sit on. If the client pushes hard enough, or the mounting screws work loose, or the power outlet (or the box it sits) in moves or slips a tiny bit downward (which can all happen from regular plugging/unplugging of a power cord), those top tabs could fall inwards. Other than that I like your videos.
It's unbelievable that a so called tiling company can come in and do such a horrible job. The workers themselves should be embarrassed that they can't even take pride in their work.
Tile work should only be done by persons with a sharp eye for detail who are, by nature, perfectionists. I only do tile work for my own house, and have very limited experience as it was only a couple years ago someone convinced me to even consider doing it. In the past year I've installed tile in my laundry closet, front entry way, shower tub surround, kitchen wall backsplash, and am about to grout tile I laid in our main bathroom. With my very first job (laundry floor) I was meticulous about evenly spaced grout lines and properly laid out tile pattern. I was equally conscientious about the grout installation. I've learned as I go with a few pointers I didn't pick up on in videos, but my point is, this bathroom tile job, the first aka bad one (on a scale I'd never even think to attempt) shows mistakes that simply suggest someone being sloppy. The professionally fixed job looks very nice. I need a genuine pro to do our master shower as that's one job I'd rather pay to have done truly professional.
Doing all those 45 cuts was surely more work than using a trim. Even the most professional tiler can do really rough work if they just want to maximise money. Though in this case it looks like a guy just wasn't skilled enough but was trying his best.
Lol what a horrific job thank god u saved the day cause that was terrible i mean sometimes its not the easiest thing to do to pick out things wrong on watching from a video but u saw these clear as day hahaha gotta love wannabe contractors lol n one thing was the water line for the toilet from center to the left is 6" that looks like its 20" lol u do great work thanx for making us good contractors continue to look great
Would like to know why Schluter Kerdi is not a good idea for a shower pan, please explain. Schluter seems to think their product is good enough to provide a warranty that includes removal and replacement of their waterproofing system and all tile work. This job looks like 100 percent shit but there is no reason to knock a product unless you provide sound reasoning.
Their product is proprietary, so you must purchase & use ALL the required products for warranty to be valid, and set them EXACTLY as instructed. They have lawyers write out the mice type. so very doubtful the warranty would ever be honored or paid out. More to the point, a gallon of liquid topical membrane like Redgard or Aqua Defense is $50 and does the same thing for a fraction of the cost with same result.
I've been doing tile for 30 years . Even my first job wasn't this bad ! My hats off to you for fixing this and rescuing thus home owner from this mess. It's tough to take on a repair job . How long did it take you and did you have help ? Cheers
StarrTile Regarding hired help, there is a limit given the amount of space in a domestic bathroom. Good job. Could we get a time lapse of the steps you take to pull out the bodgy work and made it look top notch?
Im a big fan of solid slabs on tops of any of my thresholds like where a tub gets dropped in too of a shower bench n where shower doors go corse sometimes its. Money thing and cant be done i just like the look there is no write or wrong ppl
add a few trim tiles where they should be change the complicated design with a prefab and raised rope so you don't have to worry about being flush changes horrible look to passing
It's too easy to slate other peoples work just like how at 15:00, the 2" cuts above the decorative strip dont match up with the same tiles below.. No one is perfect.
+Trevor Simko Same here. I'm no professional, but even I am seeing what went completely wrong without him having to explain it. Even I know better than the morons who installed all this. Shame on them for daring to ask money for this massacre. And good on the owners to notice it. Not on time sadly enough, but still, they noticed it. I wonder if they were able to get their money back from this so called "contractor" doing the renovations. I seriously do hope so!
Excellent fix... Sad thing the homeowners hired the "clueless hacks" and didn't know any better or do research on work they've completed. I hope they sued them or at least put out of business as that's not a small chunk of change they spent on this ordeal. You never checked exterior window flashing and or install.......cross your fingers
It pisses me off that I just got thru paying a local licensed/bonded tile company a lot of money to tile my shower enclosure and the end result looks like a sloppy homeowner job.
Yeah it pisses me off too, no one should pay twice on the same job. Being licensed & bonded means nothing, getting references & seeing past work is the best way to insure a proper job.
I installed and repaired garage doors, operators, pretty much anything remotely activated for 35 years. I know EXACTLY what you are talking about when you mention shoddy or simply wrong work. I specialized in "impossible" installations. I recall contractors calling me and asking me a question beginning with 3 little words..."what's the cheapest".... I'll pass. Most wanted the cheapest things made in existence. I hate to say this but, I like the jobs much better if a homeowner has dealt with something wrong for 5 years THEN calls me in on it. Even better if they've had 2 or 3 other supposed "pros" try to fix it. Get to make a little money and look like a hero all at the same time. Funny isn't it, that saving money thing? They save 30-50% off the initial job, only to spend 100-150% more when fixing it.

Very nice job. You can tell you take pride in your work.
Very Informative! Let's you know in great detail what to watch out for in the remodel process. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the nice comment ! ;-)
It's unbelievable that a so called tiling company can come in and do such a horrible job. The workers themselves should be embarrassed that they can't even take pride in their work.
.i really enjoy your videos. .you explain all the details in such a great way. .keep doing what you're doing. c:
Interesting, I wonder who did this job as I know someone who did similar work at my house. Needless to say job was terrible.
shiny slick floor in a wet cell. hmm that must be nice.
Great video, so many of these fake tile installers out there charging doctors wages for trashy work. I find mastic in so many installs.

How did you figure out the cost of labor on a repair job like that...Very nice work by the way. Great video and workmenship.

The Schluter does replace a shower pan still has to be redone since looks like they didn't put in the drain.
I wish you was in New York .., great advise 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Thank you
It boggles my mind how a homeowner can let a job like that go that far!
Nothing wrong with promoting yourself and your excellent work on YT.
