How to mortar a shower curb.

What kind of mortar ? You think deck mud would hold up in the metal lath?

I only know type s mortar, I don't know anything about deck mud

Is it ok to just use a 2X6 wood instead and just mortar it and tile it ?

I have 2x4s with a pan liner, diamond mesh and than mortar, If you are talking about not using a pan liner.
You absolutely can not build a curb without the liner unless you use a foam system, and at that point you don't need the mortar either.

Good idea not to put up hardiboard until after the pan is done. Tile it, grout it first and leave a gap to be caulked. No leaks.
