Good idea not to put up hardiboard until after the pan is done. Tile it, grout it first and leave a gap to be caulked. No leaks.
What kind of mortar ? You think deck mud would hold up in the metal lath?
I only know type s mortar, I don't know anything about deck mud
Is it ok to just use a 2X6 wood instead and just mortar it and tile it ?
I have 2x4s with a pan liner, diamond mesh and than mortar, If you are talking about not using a pan liner.You absolutely can not build a curb without the liner unless you use a foam system, and at that point you don't need the mortar either.
