  • Thanks for growing with us!
    In this video we are sharing how we prepare our hydrangeas and roses for winter. This is not a pruning tutorial...just deadheading and making sure our plants are safe from heavy ice and snow.
    We start with the different types of hydrangeas. Panicle or paniculata. Mophead or arborescens. Bigleaf or macrophylla. Mountain or seratta. Oakleaf or quercifolia. Each type needed a slightly different approach and Eric explains each one.
    After a very cinematic deadheading of our limelight head it is time to move on to the roses.
    Although we prefer to do our main pruning in the Spring, we need to prepare the roses so that they aren't damaged over the winter.
    Here is our arch! We absolutely love it!

    Love all your beautiful plants. You guys work great together. I can’t wait to wake up and check out what you’re doing in your garden. I love to play in my garden, I’ve just moved to this home last summer. Basically put the pots. In the ground to get them all in shelter and last spring planted them, still a work in progress. Thinking I might need to move a few more and buy some more to plant. 😂
    I’m 61yr this isn’t getting easier, but you inspire me. Thank so much, I only wish my husband would come out and help me. Love your yard❤

    Northern Michigan, zone 5/6; I have big leaf hydrangeas that I only deadheaded, did NOT prune, but they didn’t always flower. That’s when I realized the deer were eating the buds in Winter. A cherry farmer had wire fencing he was removing from cherry trees so I encased the hydrangeas in those for the winter. The following year (and since then) I have so many beautiful blooms!

    “I’m going to start at the back of the hedge in case I mess it up.” 🤣😂 Perfect accompanying music during the Limelight deadheading!
    Yikes, I hope you didn’t wreck your mower when you turned it over!!! There is a specific direction you can tip mowers without damage (sorry I don’t know which way that is for your mower) having to do with oil getting into the gas if tipped the wrong direction. Hopefully, all is well with it.

    Thanks for all of the tips for winter prep! (A suggestion, instead of using a paddle of florist wire on your roses which can cut into the stems of plants, look for a roll of soft plant tie. It's foam covered wire that can be cut to length....though it won't fit in your pocket. 😉)

      I thought about that after we finished this. I was going to switch it out but we don't know how far back everything will need to be cut back in spring! We shall see...either way it won't be on for more than winter.

    You asked to leave comments on why zone 7 is so awesome or not so awesome to live in as far as gardening. I live in 7b and agree, we can grow almost anything here but we have quite the humidity and it can be stifling in the summer. Too, with panicle hydrangeas that are advertised as white, changing to pink, we don’t get that beautiful pink because we don’t have the cooler evenings that brings that color on but we admire the northern states that do. There are pros and cons to living in different zones. What’s great is each zone displays its own strengths and beauty. BTW, the trimming of the Limelight hedge with the dramatic music was funny. Great video.

    • @growformegardening
      @growformegardening  10 місяців тому +2

      Well that's certainly a tradeoff. I wonder if Quick Fire Fab would turn pink for you...they start changing color pretty early before we started to cool off.

    • @ginabumgarner5316
      @ginabumgarner5316 10 місяців тому +1

      Little Lime Punch is the best I've found that gives me a pinkish hue. I love it. I do have a Quick Fire Fab and it does not turn pink except if it produces a few surprise late blooms mid to end of summer, they will give a pinkish color but nothing close to what it brings up north.

    So much good information, thank you for sharing! I live near Memphis, 7b, and the summers are miserably hot and humid, but I cannot imagine the snow. It looks so pretty to see the huge drifts on tv and I always wonder how people function in that situation. Partially because we cannot drive in the snow here! Schools literally close if there is a half inch of snow or even if the forecast is predicting certain winter driving conditions to take place! We make sure we have our milk, bread, and eggs, then hunker down. A friend from Indiana asked why a snow forecast made every southerner dream of French toast! It’s all about the stables in your pantry.
    I was so upset when I purchased three three gallon PW Limelight’s and learned they will not turn pink for us because we don’t have enough cool nights. I was so pissed because the tag just showed the lovely pink I was looking forward to and made no mention of it depending on your zone!
    I love learning so much from y’all! The best You Tube gardening channel out there!!! Mary in 7b

      @growformegardening  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you Mary. That's no fun that you won't get the pink color!! This season we didn't get cold as fast so we had a bit of blush on the limelights but not the show we usually get. I wonder if some of the darker pink panicles might work better...or you could try Invicibelle Ruby.

    I lived Upstate NY for 3 yrs as a child. Yes winters are harsh. Got tons of snow. Now living in NY zone 7b. It’s more enjoyable. Yet it gets very windy so I have to cut the dry blooms on my limelight’s. The wind alone has snapped off the branches. Suggestion for tying roses or any other similar plants to secure them for winter: instead of paddle wire, try using wrapped wire to prevent the plants from being damaged by the plain wire cutting into the stems. I use wrapped floral wire I get it online for $9.00 a roll. I'm in Colorado in 5b - 6a and really enjoy your videos. Our biggest challenge is clay soil like you wouldn't believe, but I get lots of inspiration from what you two have done in just 5 years. Looking forward to what you'll be up to in 2024.

      wrapped floral wire...check!! I don't go tight with the wire because I know ultimately it will be adjusted. I was just watching Gardener's World and someone used twine and it looked pretty tight.

    Ok the hydrangea hedge dead heading clip with the trimmers had me LOL!! Ahhh that was hilarious!
    And yes,I agree, everyone does their own thing that is best for them in their gardens. I just finished pruning some of my panicle hydrangeas. I chose to prune now in the fall mainly because I wasn’t able to do it last spring (they got huge) and spring is so busy for us. But I do usually like to prune them in the spring.I’ve never considered the deadhead preparation for my panicle hydrangeas. I like that approach too!
    Have a great day Eric & Christopher! Thanks for another great video. ❤️

    I’m in Southern Oklahoma. Zone 7! Winters we get horrible ice storms, lol not light fluffy snow usually. A couple years ago we got a cold spell and got down to -18 and in summers we are often 100+ degrees. We basically have HOT summer, a week or 2 of fall, winter, and a couple weeks of spring! All with tons of wind and drought! 😂 Not exactly perfect gardening weather. I would totally make dried hydrangea arrangements w all those beautiful dried blooms, especially for fall!

    It’s always a lot of work in the garden during fall season. I’m in SW Ontario and have been wrapping 60+ roses in chicken wire cages (3 ft tall) and backfilling with leaves. The rabbits here are ruthless! I have two teasing Georgia roses. They are beasts. Great video!

    Hi guys, found your show while looking through shows on gardens. Love hydrangeas so when I saw this and you explained old and new wood i tnought finally I understand. Panacle new wood, so can cut but then you went to oak leaf a panacle but you showed where the new growth had started so no cutting. Growth old wood. I only have 3, one is over 5p years, my mother planted, I believe it's a limelight, it doesn't have a cone flower. One is a endless summer and lucky I get 2 blooms. Never like like yours. Never see so many blooms. What fertilizer do you use?
    Your garden is beautiful
    I have watched Laura, Garden Answer but you explain better. I always
    wondered how she could afford such a landscape if she was a test garden for some large company?

    Hi both. I'm in Zone 7a NJ. and you're right we can grow just about anything. Although we do get that heavy snow a lot of the time. Only thing we have trouble with growing is Crape Myrtle. We are just on the cusp of that overwintering. One question. Do you clean up the dead hudrangea leaves after they drop? Or wait until spring?

    • @growformegardening
      @growformegardening  10 місяців тому

      Normally we leave them, but this year we had stupid mites. We want to get rid of as much material as possible so they can't survive!

    I am growing heaven in zone seven but the grass is always greener. In zone 7 we can’t grow a lot of things that need a long winter like lilacs or anything sensitive to humidity or high heat. Zone seven is both too wet and too dry for a lot of things and it is also at some point to hot AND too cold for others!!

    This past winter my hydrangeas i bought last year all died back to the ground. So my wee bit griddy didnt bloom this year. Only the lime lights bloomed and the orginals only had a few blooms. I lost 8/9 butterfly bushes. After our lawn guys is finished with fall clean up im going to add hay around most of my plants base. I know some pest will over winter. do you guy suggest spraying something on the hay, before i put the hay down, spray before i do spring clean up or after hay is moved?
