There's a scene in the script after the dinner Indy and Captain Blumburtt talk about how Indians don't eat meat and that the meal was meant to somehow scare them off. I guess if they had kept it in, it would have slowed the pacing even more.

@@vinson1445 I was just debating with my dad about the scene and he said it works to set up the cult shenanigans. And i said "they needed to keep that one line in the movie to make it work."
It would have slowed the pacing down but I think it would have made a world of difference tonally.
      Thanks for the comment!

@@PointlessRewind-PR Yeah, I subbed to your channel after watching Crystal Skull. I like how you point out the good and bad. That and we agree that Marcus was mishandled in Last Crusade.

@@vinson1445 thanks for subbing! Looking at movies like this helps me be more objective so I dont just blindly praise or hate on things.

It's the best movie in the series.

    It's not a sequel. It's a prequel.

    • @PointlessRewind-PR

I know it chronologically a prequel. But its not structured in the way a prequel typically is. It doesnt really set anything up or try to say anything meaningful for whats to come, though its got a solid character arc for Indy leading into Raiders. But IMO the timeframe of the movie is just a setting for the movie; it doesnt operate like a standard prequel.
And I also consider it a sequel because I like to see the changes in Steven Speilbergs direction and Harrison Fords performance that comes with more experience. So again, chronologically its absolutely a prequel. But i have zero issues calling it a sequel.

@PointlessRewind-PR it's probably the first prequel film ever made. There are no other rules to a prequel other than it takes place before. If you want to say you consider it a follow up I can agree but it is not by definition a sequel. But who cares right

Another great review, keep it up, mate!
I laughed at your bug scare bit lmaoo the scream!!
ToD was my first Indy movie so I also have such a huge soft spot for it and the nostalgia attached to it has probably helped me gloss over some of the weaker aspects of the film. I really enjoyed your analysis and review and certainly there were things that I didn’t think of before.

      Hahaha glad that gag worked!
Yeah this is a movie that I still enjoy so much and watch probably yearly but whereas Raiders I think is just a phenomenal movie, Temple is almost purely a nostalgia fix for me.
Thanks for watching and working on Last Crusade right now! Might be delayed because I'm going on vacation in a week but before that i should release another video on Temple of Doom where I rank all the scenes.

This was my first Indiana Jones film as a child and it holds a special place in my heart despite the fact that Kate Capshaw is completely terrible. I guess it helps if you're sleeping with the Director.
When I would get in trouble as a child, my dad would threaten to rip my heart out 😅

Hahaha your dad threatened to rip your heart out while my dad just covered my eyes during that scene. Wildy different parenting philosophies 😂

Juxtaposed against Karen Allen's Marion, the character of Willie was such a letdown - although she was basically a stand-in for how most of us would act in those situations. The music number also took me out of the movie - I'd rather that was in the middle for a popcorn run or bathroom break. Regarding the cexoticizing The Other, and White Saviour tropes: it wasn't on my radar when it was released, although I don't think I was ignorant enough to buy into all the stereotypes. Nevertheless, in my relatively woke years, that would be an uphill battle for rewatching ToD.
Otherwise, although I was disappointed in the theater after waiting years, I saw it on TV a few years later and found it more enjoyable. I just needed a mute button for poor Kate Capshaw's screaming jags, ha ha.
Excellent retrospective as usual, and looking forward to the next one!

Yeah Karen Allen was so good...Marion ended up being a damsel in distress a bit too often but she was fiery. Willie just feels like a caricature who works like 15% of the movie and sucks for the remaining 85%.
The music number is so weird...having seen the movie dozens of times it doesnt bother me but I cant imagine seeing this movie for the first time now!
And the cultural insensitivity is weird. As an Indian, I actually think it never bothered me because I recognized it as not being realistic and just an attempt to be funny. And when people made jokes about me eating all sorts of stuff because of this movie, I interpreted it as just dumb jokes and nothing insidiious. But while I think Spielberg and Lucas were just trying to have some harmless fun, I dont think people back in the 80s realized you gotta show some restraint with things you dont understand because it can be insulting and lead to misunderstandings.
Thanks for watching and I should have a scene ranking video for ToD out soon and then working on the Last Crusade stuff. Those might be delayed a bit because coincidentally I'm going to India for a couple weeks. Glad you are enjoying these videos!

@PointlessRewind-PR in terms of cultural insensitivity, ToD was set in the 1930s and possibly portraying or sending up the stereotypes of that era's movies (i.e.: Gunga Din). Nevertheless, the 80s also brought us Long Duk Dong from Pretty in Pink, sooo ... yikes.
