Depeche Mode is the definition of synth pop. You think it sounds like 80‘s? That’s because they defined the sound of that decade. Absolute giants since 40 years.

The crazy thing about this band, is that they started in 1981, and almost every year in the 80's they released an album. They struck commercial US success with the album previous to this, in 1988 and toured a 101 concert streak across the country ending in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In the early 90's they began their 'album almost every four years' trend that has carried on to current times, with their latest album that just came out last year. 40 years of constant albums. few bands can say that.

DM redefined music back in the early 80's. The Cure - Kraftwerk - New Order & Depeche Mode are pioneers of this sound. DM went from being called a "One Hit Wonder," to releasing multiple hits & selling over 100 Million records. Inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame & to this day is the most covered synth pop band in history. They have influenced thousands of bands. They are absolute legends. I saw them live 3 times in 2024 alone! Incredible band live. - A song I would highly recommend off of the same album as "Enjoy the Silence," is "HALO."

  • @sumonjamal1653

You got it right... It's a French name meaning "Fast Fashion" ("deep - esh mode") even though the band is British... They debuted as an electronic synth pop group in 1980... 'Enjoy the silence' was from 1990 - it became one of Depeche Mode's biggest singles from the iconic album 'Violator'... which also had the hit singles: "Personal Jesus" ... 'Halo' ... 'Policy of truth' ... 'World in my eyes'...🔥🔥

This has been my favorite band since my friend from the UK, who moved to Canada when he was young, brought his music collection with him and introduced me to their music in the later 80's.
I have seen them multiple times in Canada and the US, and in 2017 I flew to see them at the Olympic Stadium in London, with VIP early access tickets. Me and about 40 other people got lead onto the stadium field a couple hours before the concert and were allowed to set up our spots at the stage front for the show. Looking back, during the concert, and seeing near 80,000 people behind me, packing the stadium, was the absolute best time in my entire life.

They were definitely products and pioneers of the early 80's New Wave movement that came out of the UK. This band specifically favored synth because as teenagers, the original band mates weren't allowed to make too much noise in the house, so using actual classic instruments was not in the cards. They did incorporate them in the later 80's as their success grew. That straight synth has become a hallmark sound for the band over the years though.

I had never been to anything so otherworldy(?), nor have I since. Everyone dancing, but still focussed on the stage. Hours of being transported from reality into the feelings, emotions, and movement. It was incredibly immersive.

Depeche Mode is 80s royalty! They did a live version of their classic song (Walk In My Shoes) on the BBC SiriusXM radio. It is magical!!!

What I love about the 80's specifically New Wave is that artist just interpreted their songs in their Own (distinct authentic) Voice. No One was trying to OUT Sing or OUT perform each other with vocal gymnastics and histrionics. It never occurred to me that that would ever be a thing and it makes me wish that that was not the case in modern music.

Saw them last year and loved every minute of. One critic said "Even if sentimentality remains part of their draw, in 2023 Depeche Mode can still put on a show that reminds its audience that great songs transcend aesthetics, fads and even eras."

DM is one of my top favorite bands from college days. I can't even count how many time I saw them live. Their was a movie in the early 80s called Summer Lovers and DM is played in the background of a scene. Just Can't Get Enough caught my ear and I searched out the band.

You are saying the name correct. Depeche Mode in translation means fast fashion. Depeche Mode was recently inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. They were massively popular on college alternative radio in the 80s but in the 90s with “Enjoy the Silence” brought them to the mainstream. They have played live everywhere and have done the unbelievable. They sold out the Rose Bowl in 1988. The show was recorded and released as a film called “101.” They even caused a riot in downtown Los Angeles when they came in for an instore signing. They are pioneers of electronic music. Many of the artists and musicians of today cite Depeche Mode as one of their influences.

So... Enjoy the Silence is actually from 1990, but DM had their first album released 1980, so you could say 80s synthpop is spot on. Although they are much more than that, given that they are still active, and had their last album released just two years ago (just months after they lost Andy Fletcher, the bands keyboard player). They were nominated three times for the Rock'n Roll Hall of fame, entering it in 2020 with their 3rd nomination, and all of their 15 studio albums reached (sometimes multiple) gold or even platinum status. If you wanna get more into it i have some recommendations to get a good feel for them : "I feel you", "Just can't get enough", "Personal Jesus", "People are people"

They are from Basildon in Essex. 30 miles from London. They went to school with Alison Moyet (from Yaz as you Americans call them). Vince Clarke was the early songwriter who left just as Depeche just as they were breaking and started Yaz with Alison Moyet. They went to my school! I delivered papers to Dave Gahans mum!

This is a band that reinvented itself at least 3 times: started as UK-weenie elctro-pop (just can't get enough); next phase was dark synch perfection (master & servant, violator and many others) and third came their Los Angeles heroin chic dark rock synth phase (walking in my shoes). During the early/mid 80s to the early 90s there were 4 UK bands that got pretty big eventually but started out sorta obscure especially in the USA: Cure, Smiths, DM and U2 ... and while anyone who adopted them early before they got semi-big usually liked more than one of them they usually had one of them that they identified with more than the others; the really introverted sensitive gothy types often loved the Cure most, the nerdy sensitive white guys like myself were Smiths/Morrissey identifiers and while i never knew a teens/20s ish person actually cool enough to identify with DM (many faked it or pretended to) they were the band of the coolest kid you knew who smoked and was a tortured soul (DM had lots of female fans who lusted for Dave Gahan) ... and mainstream dorks liked U2 who were the lamest of these bands by a country mile and couldn't musically or culturally hold a candle to any of the other three.

Dépêche Mode was the name of a french fashion magazine back then...
They have a fanbase of hundreds of millions sticking devoted to them since 40yrs... it wasn't mainstream back then - it is indie, influenced by Kraftwerk, David Bowie and more...
Dave back then was highly addicted to heroine - which was in his arms... he was clinically dead four times and survived...
Been at every tour since 1983 when I was 13 - it was my 24th concert with them tonight. My most beloved song: its called a heart
Check out how the crowds are waving at every concert... especially with never let me down again

Yes, this was big. The song and the band were huge. Absolute megastars. This is the category pf band and song where it is hard to believe that somebody never noticed it before.
If you liked it, Depeche mode is a band with many megahits. I think "Personal Jesus" might be a good one to react to. They also do very good concerts and there are excellent live versions of their songs. I personally love the gentle live version of "Shake the disease", which also has beautiful lyrics.

They are one of the pioneering synthpop acts. They made synthpop accessible too. There is a good doc called Sythn Britannia that is great. Depeche Mode's was on Mute Records. Daniel Miller owns the label and produced several of their records. Daniel Miller did one single as the Normal, Warm Leatherette. Most definitely an 80's club staple.
