  • Durin and his heirs were some of the greatest kings among Dwarves in Tolkien’s Middle-earth (but there were some good ones who were not named Durin as well)! Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the seven Durins in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

The world was young, the mountains green
No stain yet on the Moon was seen
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone
He named the nameless hills and dells
He drank from yet untasted wells
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere
And saw a crown of stars appear
As gems upon a silver thread
Above the shadow of his head
The world was fair, the mountains tall
In Elder Days before the fall
    Of mighty Kings in Nargothrond
    And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away
The world was fair in Durin's Day
A king he was on carven throne
    In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor
And runes of power upon the door
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shown forever far and bright
There hammer on the anvil smote
There chisel clove, and graver wrote
There forged was bladed and bound was hilt
The delver mined the mason built
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale
And metel wrought like fishes' mail
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword
And shining spears were laid in horde
    Unwearied then were Durin's folk
    Beneath the mountains music woke
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang
And at the gates the trumpets rang
The world is grey, the mountains old
    The forge's fire is ashen-cold
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls
The shadow lies upon his tomb
    In Moria, in Khazad-dûm
But still the sunken stars appear
    In dark and windless Mirrormere
There lies his crown in water deep
'Till Durin wakes again from sleep

"Because, Master Baggins, you should never underestimate Dwarves"
I dont know why the history of the dwarves fascinates readers so much. They came before the elves but awoke after, they are niether elf nor man; they are obstinate, stubborn, and loyal to a fault. They are truly unique.
One thing is certain, if u have a dwarf in your company consider yourself lucky and never with a dull moment ^_^

I liked your comment to say the least. That's a good question. I like gimli. But I like most the company in The fellowship of the Ring. I felt sorry for Boramir because I don't think he stood a chance at least not a fair one. I have often wondered how I would do in the same position as him. I don't really seek power I seek friendship. To me that is power and the best kind

Durin the Deathless left a legacy and line, that endured beyond ages. Even as a shadow of it's former Moria was great indeed.
Azaghâl the Lord of Belegost and Telchar the Smith among other children of Aule did great things that endured long with effects farreaching. Still it is the first who stands above all Else in memory of those who came after.
Durin was one and perhaps the best example, why you should not look down on the deeds of those smaller then you. For the Naugrim where small in stature yet great in deeds.
Thank you for this reminder. :)

I mean, they recover Erebor at the end of the Third Age, they recover Khazad-dum (Moria) in the Fourth Age, they have friendly relations with Men, so why should they decline? It makes no sense. What happened?

Completly guessing here: As far as I now, the Legendarium never was meant to be pure fantasy. It was kind of a "history book" for us, like Arda was just a Proto-Earth. So obviously, at one point everything in Middle-Earth that does not exist on our planet had to go eventually. That includes the dwarves.
I read somewhere that Tolkien (or his son) once explained, that in the Fourth Age the memory of magic would fade, since all elves left ME, so it would become a very cold and sad place, without any magic or mystery in it.

I agree. Today is my first time ever hearing the Dwarf race eventually going extinct at some point during Arda's history. It makes no sense for them to just die out, especially after everything they've done, been through and more. But if you think about it, it honestly sounds like something Tolkien had in his early writings that he never got around altering or altogether changing.

You ever think that the rings "dimmed" the dwarves and they only grew hale again after their loss.
And this effect gave the dwarves the right of passage into valinor as it did the elves and hobbits?
And the dwarves built stone ships of a design taught to them by the bond between gimli and Legolas. And sailed them from stone docks beneath the mountains to Aules' workshop in valinor, where they lived in a separated peace.

Thanks so much for this explanation. The line of Durin has always confused me so much now it makes sense to me .Have you ever done a video on the Great Plague and what it may have been ? If it was similar to the Bubonic Plague or more like Smallpox in nature .I have always thought it sounded more like Anthrax in nature due to the animals dying alongside the humans also if I am correct .Anthrax would have a devastating effect on both being a zoonotic .That is just a guess on my part living on a farm something we have to vaccinate against with our horses and other farm animals .Predators though carriers are very seldom affected too badly and Tolkien does state the wolves came also during this time .This is just a guess on my part probably a bad one but what it sounded like to me .They could have feasted on both the farm animals ,deer and other prey animals with very little effect on them .It's my theory probably wrong .

I'm always looking forward to Sunday nights when you post a video! My question is there were the original seven Dwarves created by Aule and hidden away for later, but if I remember correctly none of them were female? They were all the fathers of the seven Dwarf houses mentioned later in the Legendarium. Do you think that Aule or Iluvatar created more Dwarves (more specifically female Dwarves) later on so they could multiply, or am I not remembering correctly about the seven being explicitly listed as male?

I've always loved the story of the Dwarves in Tolkien's lore.
Especially how Iluvatar adopts them as his children out of love.

I really wish Tolkien could have finished his story after the War of the Ring, the 4th age would have been really interesting. Supposedly the blue wizards returned as evil overlords, would have been cool.

I found it incredibly distracting and annoying after the 50+ badly rolled R's that stick out terribly in contrast to the rest of his speech. I wish he'd avoid the tryhard pronunciations and just tell the story. Literally my only complaint.

I wonder of those Elves of Hollin that could not either flee to Imladris or the Grey Havens instead sought refuge in Khazad-Dum, at least for the time being until they could either take safe passage into the West or settle in nearby Elven Realms.

I've always been sad to hear of the ending that was planned for the Dwarves, where they would all just gather in one place and prepare to die out, leaving (so it seems) no trace behind them. You have to wonder how they would have wanted us to remember them, and why they couldn't have been allowed to leave something for us to find . . . and perhaps, to learn from.
