Thank you for this great explanation. Can you please explain how do you expose for the faces and decide on the lights power. Do you use assistant who would stand on the speaker spot and you adjust exposure and lights power? I would assume you adjust exposure to have nice dark background but then how do you know much light power to add? Just slowly adding power and checking faces look good? Could you please share your full thought process for both setting up exposure and adding light power? Thank you

This isn't an exact science. Just stand at the spot and try to estimate how much light you can throw there without it becoming too obtrusive for the speaker, it's always a compromise. Last thing you want is for the pissed off planner running at you in the middle of a speech, hissing to turn your lights off.

Great idea! I'll put it on my list to create a tutorial about that. For the most part for open dancing I am putting a light top left and bottom right pointing to the center of the dance floor.

Do You add soft boxes to the lights?

Do you have the lights at full power with no soft box? Would the aputure 60x be suitable instead?

I just bought a couple of neewer lights should I use the diffuser during toast lighting? How far away are you placing these lights from the couple and toast giver?

    • @HowToFilmWeddings

I do not use diffusers. I place the lights as far away as I can as long as they are still effective.

Do you still need to use the air light if the speaker is bald?

How does this affect the photographer? Won’t it be a too dark for them?
I ask because I often work with a mate of mine (he’s a photographer and I’m a videographer) and I don’t want us to fall out over my lighting setup.

It's never been an issue for us. Some photographers use their flash - others don't. Since I'm lighting it well most photogs like it.

@@HowToFilmWeddings good to know. It looks sick and I’d love to be replicating this lighting setup.
I’ll give it a try on my next wedding. Thank you for taking the time to reply 👊🏼

How do you communicate and get a "particular" photographer to budge when you want to light like this, but they say "we want photos of the toast giver and couple together"?

    • @lamosos
      @lamosos 2 роки тому +3

You tell them that this is what you have previously discussed with the couple (which you obviously have) and this is exactly what the couple wants. Ask the photographer if they would like to have a further discussion with the couple right now or if they are content with allowing you to do your fucking job. Don't ever bother trying to explain to anybody why it has to be done a certain way when it's time to shoot. At that point it's a waste of time, breath, and won't accomplish anything besides making you appear weak and defensive. As a general rule, try to be as nice as possible to the photographer throughout the day and help them in any way you can, so when the time comes for you to be firm on something, they are less inclined to object.

@@lamosos Emphasis on "discussing with the couple." Maybe we are bias, but this subject placement for toasts is more important for the quality of the video, vs the photographers "toaster and couple" aesthetic.

This is really good info. Real workable tips. All these dumbies on youtube seem to only care about camera specs 🤣🤔

The main purpose of the edge light is to separate the subject from the background while giving it more three-dimensionality. When you position it to hit the side of the face that is already lit while your shadow side bleeds into your background, you are completely defeating that purpose.

What do you do when the toast giver wants to talk to the guests who are behind him. Now I'm filming his back.

we set them up in a way where they don't have to, if at all possible. At the end of the day, it is a live event, and you can't control everything
