What a shame Albert! I’m in awe of people who can break down music like this. Some if it goes over my head but it still adds another layer of appreciation for the artist’s work. You must be disheartened but keep doing what you do. It’s fascinating stuff.
I remember putting my headphones on to listen to this song when it dropped, and being absolutely blown away. Lana continues to improve and evolve. I’m so proud of her.
As someone who barely understands musical theory (and mostly didn’t understand the technical breakdown of the chords on this track), I still love and highly respect you sharing your knowledge. When our experience of music, especially Lana’s music, is mostly an emotional response, it’s refreshing to hear and learn about the technical aspects of the music.
I’ve always thought Lana’s music has so many layers, sonically and lyrically making it worthy of dissecting. I’m glad i stumbled upon your video. Very well done 😃❤️
It's a well thought out song, the clear and sheer meaning behind it really pushes it over from experimental to intentional and genius. People who don't like this song may be lacking the understanding a bit, but I can see where they are coming from. It is an incredible MODERN work of art. Great analysis.
What I understand is Lana had no idea how to finish the first half of a beautiful song, so just did some random stupid shit at the end that had no relation to anything. There is no justifying "shimmy shimmy ko-ko bop" in this song, none. I'm not going to reward her for not being smart enough to finish what she had.
@Kristin Caudill it's connected to her unreleased song Earthquake. I'd encourage a listen, because it does add more of a sense of the situations or scenarios surrounding that part of the song. Like it all connects to a certain time for her. :) just my opinion, you're certainly entitled to your own!
@Kristin Caudill You could say the same thing of Bohemian Rhapsody, or Happiness Is A Warm Gun, or Paranoid Android, or any other number of bona-fide masterpieces.
@@AlbertGenower A&W is nowhere near the level of any of those songs, pls. Point me out a single cliché in any of those songs as pointlessly dumb as "shimmy shimmy ko-ko bop". You can't. Also, all of those songs are three part suites; A&W is not. Lana couldn't figure out how to end her one part song and did some stupid sh!t at the end of it. That's what it sounds like because that's what it is. You really come in here invoking the name of Radiohead and the fcuking Beatles? B!tch pls. Lana has never made an album anywhere near as good as those guys and probably never will, considering her albums are always a few songs too long and she has nobody to tell her to not do all of this stupid sh!t like ruin her beautiful ballad with "shimmy shimmy ko-ko bop". Still haven't heard a defense of this nonsense because there is none.
White Dress is still Lana's greatest work based on its simplicity and that it was released during the middle of a global pandemic which allows it to strike a chord with millions of people concurrently in lockdown the first time they heard it.
The thing that sets apart this album from the rest is intent and planning. She has always displayed a pretty uniform album sound (with the exception of the dual pop/trap and sultry pop rock that was LFL), but she had never previously attempted to flesh out a theme in their content. This album has become my favorite since Honeymoon (& really, nothing had topped Ultraviolence for me in production value until this); however, your truest insight into who she is at her core will come from her earliest, unreleased works, where she (as Lizzie Grant) established this exact sound we see in songs like A&W, fishtail, Peppers. and taco truck/VB. This is her rediscovering her most personal sounds & matching them to her present maturity some 15 years later. And I feel pretty confident in believing this to be entirely intentional given the themes of the music on this album. She reflects back in “Fingertips” to discuss her early teen years when her mom sent her away to rehab. She hasn’t uttered a word about this since “This is What Makes Us Girls” on BTD. I can’t exactly explain why this album is so different, but she nearly lost me with the prior 2. Every new fan complains of the side of the fandom that wants “the old Lana” back, but I never wanted an ultraviolence pt 2, just a well developed and produced uniform sound that compelled me beyond what I saw as poems over a tune that was NFR (some were a hit, but I barely return to that album, unpopularly enough). My point is, songs like My Best Days, Jump (“palm trees in black & white” line used in Fishtail comes from this song), Hawaiian Tropic, Jealous Girl, etc. all mirror this sound & are worth discovering if this song is something you’re finding to be best on the album
That's a really interesting take on things. As much as I love NFR (still probably my favourite Lana album overall), not viewing it particularly favourably - especially since mainstream critics have praised it so highly - gives you a quite different outlook on the development across Lana's whole career. I'll have to take a closer listen to some of the old Lizzy stuff.
I remember hearing that song for the first time and I was like: «Lana, you are my religion!». A&W is something like heaven. The lyrics, the background, the music, everything is perfect. And, when the album came out, I thought it is the best album I have ever heard. Personally, I adore listening to Fingertips, A&W and Candy Necklace. Of course, I should not forget to mention that I was so satisfied and amazed when I heard the second part «Jimmy» ❤❤❤ I love @LanaDelRey. She is a legend.

@@AlbertGenower i bet that the title can sound pretty different to an english speaker. I'm italian so the title itself "fine china" is pretty obscure and fascinating to me, i learned that it means both porcelain and cocaine but when I listen to it i think about and feel something much more abstract. It becomes like a synonym of melancholy or the fear of being abandoned... Or it becomes the incarnation of memory, of the sadness of the past and the chaos of the present. Idk. This shit got me philosophical
Super interesting!! What do you think of the idea of the piano at 4:40 is an NFR sample at all? For the longest time I thought this and the strings were NFR callbacks
Interesting video. I know I'm in the minority on this because everybody seems to adore A&W, but personally I'm not much of a fan. Particularly the rap/electronic part in the end is really grating on my ears, and caused me to completely dislike the song in the beginning. I've grown more appreciative of it over time, but it's still very far from being my favorite LDR song, or even my favorite of the album. Personally, I think "Grandfather ..." is the highlight of the album, but I guess my taste is just very different from everybody else's.
That's fair enough. One thing I think is particularly a strength of Lana's work is her albums remain cohesive whilst still having all the songs sound different. Thanks for watching :)
Where did you get the sheet music from? o: I have been trying to find it, as i want to recreate it in GarageBand. I’ve searched around, but i can only really find it for piano.
I transcribed the sheet music from ear myself (probably the most time consuming part of making the video) I've put it here if you want it: drive.google.com/file/d/1RCsUuVd9oqTWuhR9UkHERBzgd2KYhO-T/view?usp=sharing
Her crowning achievement is NFR, (which is almost consensus now). I love Venice Bitch a lot. But everything from that album is stupendous. Her first albums have terrific singles (National Anthem for instance), but as albums they're kind of weak.
I agree that NFR is her best album, though I personally do prefer A&W as a song to any individual one of the record. Venice Bitch is definitely my 2nd favourite song though.

It very well could be - I've just been having a listen. It's quite hard to tell since it's only a couple of notes though.
this was .lovely, nice analysis
Thanks for watching :)
So incredible and underrated.
Thanks for watching :)
Incredible but certainly not underrated
I felt same way about Peppers
Personally, i still think that Venice bitch is her best song but A&W joins white dress and heroine in her list of songs that could've been the best
If I do another Lana video it’ll probably be on Venice Bitch
Where did you get the sheet music from? o: I have been trying to find it, as i want to recreate it in GarageBand. I’ve searched around, but i can only really find it for piano.
I transcribed the sheet music from ear myself (probably the most time consuming part of making the video)
I've put it here if you want it:

Her crowning achievement is NFR, (which is almost consensus now). I love Venice Bitch a lot. But everything from that album is stupendous. Her first albums have terrific singles (National Anthem for instance), but as albums they're kind of weak.
I agree that NFR is her best album, though I personally do prefer A&W as a song to any individual one of the record. Venice Bitch is definitely my 2nd favourite song though.
audio drops put at 8:26 and doesn't come back until 8:40

I feel like adding that her influence on Taylor Swift and other storytellers should not go underappreciated.
I know relatively little about Taylor Swift but that's certainly an interesting thought.
now i need a lana del rey song in hungarian minor
lana in her double harmonic minor era
What’s name of that summertime sadness instrumental version in background ?
Sounds like first 10 seconds looped
It's this: ua-cam.com/video/pDElRNMOm3Q/v-deo.html&
It's the beginning of Summertime Sadness slowed 800%.

I think I agree (at least so far!)
i wasn't a big fan of the album itself but a&w is definitely one of the contenders for soty so far for me
It's probably my song of the year so far (maybe Dead To The World by Noel Gallagher too)
I'd have to check that one out!
Love all her albums ,
Thanks for watching :)
Heroin and shades of cool are her best songs period
Shades of Cool is fantastic!

This can't be just me but I fall asleep trying to listen to this.I guess this is the consequences of listening to hyperpop and experimental hip hop all day.
^ most well rested hyperpop listener
My favourite sings from her are smarty blue jeans High beach and salvatore
I love High By The Beach! There's a great video on UA-cam of Jack Antonoff showing how he helped produce it.
What’s the music that you used in the video? I mean the instruments that can be heard in the back when you speak
It’s an 800% slowed down version of Summertime Sadness:

Well, you did that!¡!!!! Good job love music, LOVE Lana

The Minor IV used here is used in Creep, My Iron Lung, Planet Telex, Airbag, Subterranean Homesick Alien, No Surprises, The Daily Mailm just to name a few - so you're right
It's good but all the Honeymoon tracks are my fav 😭
