      She's self entitled. She thinks she's better than everyone else which isn't even true. She holds other singers inferior to her even though she can't sing without autotune. Plus her fanbase is toxic af. When Billie won all those grammys, all the lana fans were at her throat. Y'all need to calm down. Not you specifically but like your while fandom.

I never knew about her controversial past and never cared about the drama I did hear. This is a woman who writes and produces her own music, has stayed out of mainstream scandal culture, speaks openly about her political beliefs, and frankly gets better every year. I wish more people could see her as the incredible artist and vocalist that she is, rather than being labeled an indie singer for teenagers. Also this girlie can PERFORM! Artists like David Bowie are praised for reinventing themselves and having stage personas but Lana is called 'inauthentic' for doing the same thing. If she can deliver a feeling and aesthetic as Lana that she couldn't as Lizzie, then I think that's true artistry and that it makes the music more genuine.

      @jessicacroteau5600 5 років тому +336

      Bowie was really David Robert Jones and he used to perform as Davy Jones in the 1960's but changed his stage name to David Bowie because he wanted to. And I know that he considered his personas characters. What I meant in my comparison was that as performers they can choose to express different parts of themselves and tell a story. I don't think it makes them any less authentic because the music and the performance still comes from them. David Bowie created personas to reflect different stages in his life and the changes in the world around him. For example, he started performing as the Thin White Duke after dealing with cocaine abuse and living in West Berlin. I don't know whether or not Lana was trying to be deceptive by taking down her old music or just trying to get a fresh start, or whether or not she's being manipulated by her management, but I won't criticize her for how she chooses to perform or express herself.

      That’s a bit shortsighted.
      They are contemporaries, whether you like Del Ray or not.
      You are a perfect example, of how divisive both of their music is.
      You’ll hear some Del Ray fans, state the same things about Lorde, as your comment did about Del Ray.
      You really believe Lorde is the more authentic? That’s your opinion, and it really doesn’t matter what Lorde or Del Ray thinks about it either, as both have very rabid fans, who will argue for who they believe is more influential.

    I work in the film industry and have shot countless music videos. Lana is one of the kindest people I have worked with. Most people are professional, a few terrible to work with, but I've never seen anyone but Lana sit and talk with the set medic about his kids. She had in-depth conversations with most crew members, asking what their next jobs would be.
    She also wanted to be present for all creative decisions. She stayed for lighting set ups and decided not to have a second team (body double) for shots. She politely told the director that she had hired him to interpret her vision so she would be a part of all of the conversations. And she was.

    Lana's persona is definitely manufactured, but she manufactured this persona herself (with help, ofc). Her music and imagery are intended to be highly romanticized surreal exaggerative fantasies, fantasy art worlds which carry on to her essence and persona. Is Lana's art intended as a product? Maybe, but it is still art. Isn't the point of art to take our minds to alternate planes and provoke emotion/responses?
    I think celebrity culture and our nosiness towards personal lives have made us forget the difference between the celebrity and the artist. It is ok for an artist to lie, to feed us illusion for the sake of art - and it is also ok for their public existence to be an extension of their work. I personally find that sort of devotion intriguing and respectable, and doubt Lana would have maintained this long if she was not invested in being an artist.

    If Lana were a man she’d be considered the father of some shit or a legend already. She’s taken the time in her life to develop a musical/cinematic universe of her own, while also exploring a new genre in each album without it feeling too drastic. Also, her methods of creating music are very similar to how people wrote their own music back in the day like Elton John or any other of the greats. I do think that Lana should be labeled the Queen of Alternative music as she fully embraces all genres. Most alternative artists shy way to far away from pop when alternative as a genre is meant to embrace all music, no matter what it is. She was able to throw jazz over a trap beat while singing about the people who were drugged in their red koolaid-while also singing about wanting her man to come to california and be a freak like her too. She also uses many vocal methods that are rare in modern music like talk singing and vocal bending which is used in tons of classic songs. She uses many vintage chord progressions... The list honestly goes on and on.

    There's one thing I know for sure--she is a magnificent storyteller of lost, broken, condemned but hopeful souls bound to find solace and sanctuary in all of her creations. When I first heard her, from that moment, I knew I can never escape her. Since 2012 until now, Lana played a huge part on how I think about life, people, the society, the consequences and how one can cope up with sadness after dwelling on it. She owns a huge chunk of me; I have inks on my body inspired by her tattoos, vinyls, posters, even annual subscriptions to music streaming services just to have her within reach. Without her, I'm sure my soul would be forever wandering in the depths of abyss. This is the very first of me, through her song, to express what I really really feel deep down inside. And I'd never ever dare to escape from her. I'd always stay in love with my Queen for eternity.

      Lol that doesn't make sense when artists release a record antagonizing nearly every audience and cause huge uproar in their target demographic because it talks about serious social themes. Beyoncé's lemonade is an example. It antagonized nearly the whole country, including the current government, all the while her mass appeal was waning. Beyoncé was still popular, but due to her releasing more and more controversial works, her target audience shrunk. Releasing the album was not a good marketing strategy. Neither was her previous album. Which is a whole other monster
