- Today I wanted to talk about how Lana Del Rey changed music and the world in general. Lana Del Rey goes by many names, Lizzy Grant, May Jailer, Sparkle Jump rope queen- but one thing is undeniable: her impact on pop culture. Lana helped to pioneer the "sad girl" trend and arguably the first to make the "vintage aesthetic" mainstream. In this Lana documentary/ video essay i will attempt to lay out in more detail these different aspects and why Lana deserves much more recognition than she currently receives. I love how her lyrics are honest and introspective, and the way she portrays mundane experiences in such an ethereal manner. For instance, in the song "Not All Who Wander Are Lost," she says, "Pulling out chairs, opening doors, look at you." Her newer albums are filled with such moments, and listening to em is a spiritual bliss.

No one understands how much Born To Die changed the trajectory of the pop music lyrics in 2010 era. She basically confessed how empty and obsolete our generation in the middle of hyper consumerism society which bothers a lot of people at the moment because being melancholy and depressed was deemed as something atrocious. As an introvert, her music made me feel seen and basically a medicine to my soul 🙏🏻
I started listening to Lana Del Rey in between my senior year of high school and freshman year of college. Fear of the unknown, unsure about my future, toxic relationships, an intense longing for simpler times, etc were all relevant in my life during this period. I found her music relatable and comforting and it helped a lot with my anxiety and made me feel less alone. I’m forever a Lana fan ❤️

Whenever someone asks me "Why do you love Lana Del Rey?" I always answer, "Ever since I first discovered her, out of all the people I've met in my life, she's the only one that made me feel understood. She made me feel less alone." Me being Latino and gay, having someone help you feel less alienated and understood meant the world to me, especially when I was battling depression and alcoholism. And as I've gotten older and grown with her discography, every album became a soundtrack to each particular era of my life. To this day, and I'm eternally grateful I now have a close group of friends who do understand me better and have a closer and stronger relationship with both my parents, Lana still gets me. Her music still enters my life at just the right moment. I'm almost 5 years sober and in a much better state of mind. But I must thank Lana for being part of the reason why my sanity is still in tact.
Thanks FaceTatt for reminding me that me loving the simple things like going for long walks with my loved ones just to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the gloomy weather is deeply inspired by Lana's appreciation of the simpler things in life.

A super fan here, what surprises me is the way so many people connect so deeply with her music even when she’s not that much of a public person giving very little and short interviews. In my case, I don’t know much about her but I know that I feel like I know what she feels when singing, it’s like that I feel a connection with her even though I don’t know her.
I was 13 when born to die came out and ever since, I’ve been enamored by the romantic art that Lana has made. In every flow of emotions I’ve experienced I’ve felt these things in a romantic way. It isn’t easy but when you recall that everyone is having a non easy human experience, you find peace and clarity in your experiences. Lana is for the spiritual, emotional, sympathetic, raw and soft souls seeking true connection past materialism and looks. Mental health is not linear , we’re all going through some things and having some non judgmental support in the form of music is a helpful thing on this long road 🌟🌙🪐🌔🌪️⛈️

First of all this is amazing. Thank you for making this for the world who does not understand her. I am a Doctor of Dental Surgery, I served my country overseas as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer, I am sober from alcohol, and I am launching my own alternative beverage in conjunction with a local university. I OWE IT ALL TO HER. Seriously I have been an underdog my whole life, an only child, my dad committed suicide, I was traumatically injured, falsely imprisoned, failed out of college. When I heard “feet don’t fail me now, take me to the finish line”… it was instant, I said if she can do it I can do it too. I am now living my best life, I even got to own the same car as Lana a Jaguar F-Type R with 550 HP. Peace and love to everyone!!!!
i started listening to lana back in 2014 and around that time ultraviolence dropped. it was unlike anything i had heard before and while, yes, i did feel ‘sadness’ but the music was alluring that i kept coming back for more. honeymoon is still my favorite, and in my opinion, her best album. she’s been one of the artists soundtracking my life for this past decade so it’s hard for me to imagine life without her.

I love you for this video, so well made! indeed Lana's influence runs so deep musically, lyrically, aesthetically and spiritually...we are all so lucky that she decided to create and put out her incredible art into the world.
And specifically the point about embracing even your pain and romanticizing your own life has been a great psychological help for me, it's also a very CG Jung-ian idea at its core and Lana perfectly incorporates it in her music: creating and understanding the mythology of your own life and life story is the only way forward to growing, healing and ultimately reaching your dreams and happiness.

I became a fan of her during the hardest time of my life, amongst many other things, I had left the first man I had ever really loved cuz he confessed he tried to unalive his ex who was called just like me a couple years before knowing him, I felt so shocked that my heart refused to believe he was a bad person so I just kept romanticizing all of our memories together and thinking I was crazy for it, but then listening to lana i felt like i wasn’t that crazy, there was someone who understood me, someone who might have felt just as crazy and sad for loving the most degenerated men you could meet but she accepted it and made it seem sad but beautiful, she’s been my favorite singer since then even though i’ve already left those sad times behind.
Lana Del Rey will never be mainstream in my opinion she never has had an actual mainstream album or even tried too even with her albums like born to die l4l and nfr even those are “considered” her mainstream era but they were never really mainstream and she never made an album or singles that were meant to be mainstream her songs are always deep beautiful and personal thats what makes it successful thats why her music is always trending and even unreleased work because the lyrics are relatable and the music is beautiful and it has a meaning so her music will always be popular . Also for me Lana will always be an unknown artist even tho she’s popular.

I still remember the anticipation of waiting for Ultraviolence’s release. The excitement when she released Tropico on UA-cam…her first Rolling Stone cover. I pre ordered the UV box set and still remember the day I first listened to West coast after listening to Born To Die for so long. Following her career has been such a huge part of my high school years and growing into adulthood, each of her albums has a special memory because I was at a different time in my life for each new release. Seeing her for the first time on the LA To The Moon tour was such a surreal experience, she was glowing on that stage. Yes I do believe Lana is at an all time high but she still is the same Lana I’ve come to know through the years and I’m happy her music is reaching more people because she deserves all the success in the world. If you get Lana, you get Lana. She’s truly a gem in our world and I’m so blessed to live in the same time as her. 🤍
god, UV and its rollout cemented her as a legend to me. I'll never forget that time period. Critics thought she was going to sell out and do more summertime sadness esc sounds, so when she opened UV with an almost 7 minute psychedelic rock song.... i was soooo gagged.

Her Cinematic music, feelings that take me back in time, enhances my ability to feel my emotions much better and form storylines in my head making it all look tragically beautiful and everything ❤

Oh wow takes me back to 2012. I was always into rock/metal and hated the "loud colourful pop songs". Lana changed everything. I remember listening to her and walking down to 7-11 and smoking cigarettes and buying diet coke lol. As a teen I was strictly goth lol. I always hated mainstream pop. She changed the way I dress and everything. I love that we're back to minimalism and all that. Lana's always been timeless and ethereal. I'm still finding some of her unreleased gems. Great video!
The more I listen to her, the more I find myself addicted to her music. The complexity and deepness of her writing skill really makes her stand out from the music industry, each song is like a life time experience with the melody and her vocal that perfectly blend together.

I discovered her because I heard her song Young and Beautiful in the movie The Great Gatsby. It just makes you lament that relationship that you never had. Since then I loved her work.

One day in 2012(2011?) as I was watching a music video channel here in Germany, a video popped up I had never heard about before and likewise for the singer. The first notes felt like grief and the video flashed up a young lady who stared back at me with eyes that said, "We all feel this, you and I." For at least a year, that song and that video dominated my mind. And I read everything related I could find on the internet. I was pleased to see that a lot of people shared my thoughts, and I was shocked to see how many people trashed Lana's music, her videos, her internet savvy, and her future. That she is such a force today 2024 is even more splendid. "A&W" hit me as powerfully as "Video Games" did, but more so with unflinching, stinging reality than dreamy nostalgia. I'm not a musician by any stretch of the imagination, but Lana seems to keep expanding her art to show the rest of us what we're not seeing and not hearing.
I could never put the finger on what was the foundation of Lana's appeal. I think you nailed it in this analysis. I also relate so much to the point you made at 15:54. I also happened to move far away from home at the time Lana released ¨Ride¨. In a moment on which I was completely isolated in a foreign country, she was the thing I could relate to. It's such a cliché it's kind of cringe.. a cringe that somehow feels endearing
It’s nice to hear that someone else moved and also found comfort in Lana. It’s weird to know that I genuinely only enjoy certain memories/ experiences because Lana helped to show that they can all be romanticized. We are cringe but we are free 🕊️

i was listening to Lana the summer I came out (2013 before i started highschool) and she truly has evolved and her music grew up with me. Forever grateful for her and her art
I'll tell you a curious fact, Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, the singer, was responsible for Lana getting to where she is now. He met Lana through Tumblr in 2011 and they quickly became good friends since they shared things in common. . In addition, they both helped each other while each was in her musical debut. For example, Abel shared a lot of Lana's content on his account, just as Lana shared a lot of Abel's content to help each other and thus each one give a contribution in order to be even more recognized by the musical audience and all just before each one achieves fame. Abel was the first to ask BBC Radio 1 to include 'Video Games' in their playlist. In fact, in an interview, Abel admits that when he met Lana he felt that he had found the girl who wrote her songs, that is, he had found her muse for her songs. From there came great collaborations such as Prisoner, Party Monster where Lana sings vocals, Stargirl Interlude, Lust for Life and Money Power and Glory, an unreleased remix by The Weeknd for the album Kissland but the original is from Lana's album Ultraviolence. Today they continue to have a close relationship, despite the fact that in the music industry there is normally all kinds of competition or rivalries of all kinds, they continue to express their affection and admiration for each other since on social networks through publications and interviews they have made . references between the two after their collaborations; their lyrical and musical influences that both have in common since their songs usually have a dark and complex theme, in which both singers talk about topics such as love, fame, drugs or sex explicitly; and above all their relationship as great friends in the music industry 🎶
I always loved her music and aesthetic. She has proved to be serious and consistent when it comes to music. "Ultraviolence" was a statement album and the proof she was a real musician.

I agree with the impressions on Christianity. It is not what fanatic haters have convinced people it is. The roots of that faith are in love and humility. Also, excellent analysis of Lana's influence on the music landscape. I see her a lot of artists like Benee, Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan, among others.
the fact that you think its crazy to say that lana is a mainstream artist is a proof that starting in the 2010s, mass media conglomerates, the majors, succeeded in marketing their biggest artist as niche artists to fidelize their young public. I really love her work and the first years of her career but she's so obviously a BIG ARTIST that's whats actually crazy to me, is to believe shes not a mainstream artist at any point whatsoever

Listened and enjoyed Lana's music for 8 years between 2014-21 but it wasn't till 2022 it hit me. Like a freight train...of how great she really is. I lost the love of my life in 2020 and when that happens you lose all passion. Things you use to love all of a sudden become unimportant. Lana bought that passion back. Her music, her voice and her persona, everything.
She may never become a household name like her buddy Taylor (so many people I talk to have still not heard of her!!!) but that's ok. In 50 years time she will be the one that will be remembered.

Watched her Ivor Novello award acceptance speech this morning and watching her up on stage waffling on I thought "She's like one of us. She's humble, she has a natural personality...she's beautiful". She took heavy inspiration from her Catholic upbringing. I wasn’t raised Catholic (Methodist) but I still find that Christian/Catholic art is the most beautiful in the world (imo). She really seized on that and made herself into a moving baroque painting

I’ve been a Lana Stan since early 2012. Each time she changes her aesthetic a bit I think I’ll lose interest in her work, just to realize that I love her new aesthetic all the same. I don’t think there’s anyone else out there like her.

Interestingly, someone said that all the pain of our early life gets stored in our bodies. There’s no way to run away from it, because we were too young to handle it so it’s at the source of all running away. All of the later personality is built on top of it. The only way to heal is through feeling what is stored deeply within. But this pain is not infinite, even if it’s probably impossible to heal all of it.
