This is spot on. Especially for people who are getting older. Strengthening your hip flexors is one way to prevent falls and older age, which is one of the major causes of hospitalizations and older people. This should be an ongoing exercise through life.

Just make sure you don’t over train the flexors compared to glutes or you will end up with hip arthritis ultimately. Too often the hip flexors are stronger than the glutes from modern life and pull the hip into the socket too strongly. If your flexors need training than your glutes probably need more.

But if you’re hip flexors are tight from a constantly sitting, wouldn’t strengthening only make things worse because it’s more tight?

    • @ThePrehabGuys

No necessarily! Sometimes our body misinterprets weakness and tightness and oftentimes, people find that perceived tightness goes away when they strengthen.

Of those four stated benefits, only one is true - stronger hips. Specifically, stronger hip flexors.
They do not contribute meaningfully to loaded squats, there is no strong evidence linking back pain to hip flexor strength, and the term “move better” is a meaningless phrase without a definition (and a big red flag 🚩that the person saying it is a quack).
