it was T+1 a hundred years ago because the market was much,much smaller than it is today. everything was done in pencil and paper. if/when a trade happened all that needed to be done was to run the paperwork across town. with the advent of the phone the globalization of the market started to happen. as it grew it got harder to get things done in just 1 day. but now, even though the market is huge and global, with the advent of the personal computer and computerizing the market making it digital trades can be done and recorded in the matter of seconds, thus they bring it back to T+1.
