When I watched Kimagure Orange Road in January of this year (2022) I instantly fell in love. The music, the aesthetics, the animation, the character design, the voice acting, etc. are just so good. Especially the music, definitely one of my favorites. But the main reason why this show became one of my favorite anime of all time is undoubtedly Madoka. I didn't find any character like her in anime yet. It's a shame that we won't get another anime like KOR again. The mangaka Izumi Matsumoto passed away in 2020 and the voice actress of Madoka, Hiromi Tsuru passed away in 2017 which breaks my heart. The reason Shin KOR didn't work as well as the prior series is because it ditched the 80's aesthetics and the main character designer Akemi Takada for a style which was modern for its time. Ironically it made it age worse than its predecessors. The novels it was based on was originally written by the scriptwriter of the anime and thus they're anime-original. The first KOR movie is also anime-original as it massively differs from the manga. Yet that movie is a straight up masterpiece. I don't think I need to describe why for anyone who has seen it.
I agree with you on all your points. Especially the movie. Some people sum up Madoka as a Tsundere and I would disagree strongly on that as I think she has her own personality, a believable personality that is far from being always angry at the hero for nothing. We also have to say that she can express her personality because she can bounce off the good things or the stupid things that are done by Kyousuke. The very first impression of her is a nice girl when met at the stairs, she has no reasons to be mean to a stranger a share a sweet moment with Kyousuke, at school she is aloof and put on her protection. She is also sweet to the people she love. She is jealous and can be angry but often it is deserved. Truly a well rounded character. She is a bit of a super woman but I'm okay with that somehow she makes it believable
Great review, I do love kimagure orange road! As a city pop fans, I always recomended kimagure's soundtrack. Their musics are banger, especially with Kanako Wada and Meiko Nakahara. Orange Road changes the way I watch Anime when I was younger. I remember watching an early episode that was dubbed in Mandarin and aired after midnight on television, the song-Night of Summer Side" caught my attention instantly and Madoka's presence makes me fall in love with her that she is still my No.1 Waifu of all time. Immediately I went to buy all 15 volumes of the manga, found the bootleg version of the TV Series, the 2 movies, the OVA series and hunted down the soundtracks. The first movie makes me cried at the breakup scene and how Kyosuke had to make the hard decision to break up with Hikaru and how he sat alone in the convenience store while "Ano Sora wo Dakishimete" was played. The 2nd movie art style was weird but it makes sense the cast was older and Kyosuke finally get laid with Madoka. It was also very sad that 3 of the main cast also passed away. Kyosuke's father is voiced by Tomiyama Kei who did many heroic leads like Kodai in the Original Battleship Yamato series, Kyosuke younger sister, Kurumi who is voiced by Honda Chieko who did Both Pulu in Gundam Double Zeta and the most heartbreaking was Tsuru Hiromi who voiced Madoka which she sadly passed away in 2017 due to heart failure. Furthermore, Izumi Matsumoto passed away too which means no more Orange Road. I think there shouldn't be a reboot and just leave it as it is since it is a product of the 80s. But I am really glad that there is still a fan base for Orange Road and how these characters won our hearts and remember what is like as a 16yrs old falling in love for the first time.

Your review is the reason I watched kimagure orange road. I love it so much but the blu ray was slightly damaged and one episode gets skipped partway through. I'm hoping to get the ova's and movie set soon. Hopefully I'll find a replacement for the first series soon.
I remember watching around 10 episodes of Orange road some time ago. I was really into it, but once I realized it was yet another anime that would delay the main couple getting togheter until the last possible moment, it really turned me off. Which was really frustrating because every time they had a scene or moment togheter it was really, really good. Yet, they couldn't get togheter because of Hikaru and bullshit reasons. Just felt too contrived. Now that I realize that kyosuke STILL hadn't broken up with Hikaru by the series end I think I made the right call

I love the aesthetic. Reminds me of Ranma. You should listen to the music from the show. There were quite a few instant bangers for me.
That's pretty much the formula for every romance genre. Even if the couple ended up together, they will break up in between only to be reunioned later. KOR is all about the love triangle. Fans are generally happy about Kyosuke and Madoka's limbo state (between friendship and intimate). That said, I think the development of their relationship peaked at Ep19 (Forbidden Island). And that's an episode no one who watch KOR should miss.
What's the point if Kyosuke and Madoka got together early on? If that became the case, it wouldn't really be a rom-com anymore, just another slice of life. And as Orange Noodle said, if they did get together, they'd temporarily break up and then get together over and over, which is much more annoying to me. Either that or the series will end prematurely without seeing its full potential. The fillers in KOR are a bit annoying but the final episodes and the movie more than makeup for it.
