      I don't think you picked the right reineta apple, or you picked a very ripened one.
      They are usually very tart. Not as tart as orange or lemons but for some reason a very unpleasant tart (for me and alot of people), that's why they are mostly used for cooking.

    I'm pretty sure that the "Reineta" apple is a variety also relatively common in France, we call it "Reinette". It has the benefit of lasting a long time without rotting !

      Think so too. In the Netherlands they are called the "Goudreinette" and are the de facto standard for the Dutch apple pie as they do not turn into goo after baking while still absorbing the spices you add to it.

    If you ever visit the UK, you need to visit Brogdale. 4,000 varieties of fruit of which 2,000 are apples. You might need to plan which varieties you are most interested in. The oldest varieties, perhaps. I have eaten one ancient Roman variety and a few Mediæval ones.

    Welcome to Portugal! We have many fruits that you may find interesting. We have many varieties of citrus fruits, also apples, pears and figs, unfortunately most of the local varieties are no longer sold since our entry into the E.U. Also some interesting wild species, a sweeter than usual acorn (Quercus rotundifolia), a small beach-growing berry (Corema album), a Mediterranean variety of Myrica (Myrica faya), and other fruits that are only found in the country side. You sure should come back and find for those.

    • @-toast-7905
      @-toast-7905 Рік тому +2

      Wow, interesting to read about those wild species! I never knew there was a Myrica here and it’s the first time I ever hear about Corena album.
      Could you maybe recommend any specific locations where one reliably would be able to find those two, as well as the sweet acorn? (I heard just some varieties of the latter are tasty.)
      I recently moved to central Portugal, and I’d like to try growing any edible species of fruit that fits the climate. Especially obscure ones.
      Anyway, thanks for mentioning those!

    I know about apple hangover! I went to an apple orchard tasting event last fall and tasted 98 different varieties (trying to pick a tree for my garden so I had to taste them all). Even taking just 2 bites out of each apple still made me almost sick. Didn’t eat apples for 3 months after. I love all your fruit tasting videos (especially for colder climates) and hope you continue tasting some of the many interesting apple varieties out there :)

      My love of apples luckily returned and my favourite apple at the tasting is called ‘Sukkertop fra Vaaelse”. It’s an old Danish variety, (as were most of the apples there) The event was made to help historical varieties survive into the future by getting people interested in them. Many of the apples have unique stories and flavors. But also many of the common and known varieties on the market are popular for a reason. Some are excellent varieties growing in my garden: Aroma and James Grieve. But I would like a Holsteiner Cox and a Kidd’s Orange Red as well 😊

    I miss varieties of apples. In NH where I grew up there were lots of orchards, one of them we went to as a kid and they would make their own ciders with different apples and it blew my mind how different the ciders were. I go there now 20 years later and they outsourced their cider making and have less variety of fresh apples. It almost breaks my heart actually.

    • @PhosphorAlchemist
      @PhosphorAlchemist Рік тому +1

      Heirloom apples in the US are available from certain small growers or through horticultural preservation societies. They can be really hard to find and availability varies by your region, but hopefully you can find something suitable.
      There are a couple of American apple preservation projects that have hundreds of varieties. It looks some names to start your search are Tom Brown's Apple Search in Appalachia, the Lost Apple Project in Washington state, and Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project in Colorado. The USDA and some botanical gardens also have preservation orchards, though I'm not sure if they sell young trees to home growers.

    • @chir0pter
      @chir0pter Рік тому

      @@PhosphorAlchemist fair enough but the us east of the west coast has a much harsher climate and longer distances than the UK, so even ancient strains will likely have been subject to selection for hardiness and suitability to transport or cidermaking and could have lost some of the characteristics of European strains

    I drank an entire half gallon of apple juice one time and I thought I was going to die too, and then came the bowel activity. Then the pain continued, and then after a couple hours I felt mostly better. You can actually get arsenic poisoning from too much apple juice. That probably only happens when you regularly drink too much apple juice.

    Bravo de esmolfe tastes watery and fresh when freshly picked. It also crispier, but it rapidly becomes more mealy (and gross imo) once out of the tree. And when I say rapidly, I mean in 2-3 it's already mealy.
    It's probably one the reasons why it's not more a popular variety of apple, along with it being easy to get bruised.

  • @mendesjosr4438

    We have the Bravo in my region and perhaps you did not try the best example. They are usually very very sweet. Not really used to cook. My grandfather would add them to the wine vat when making his wine if he thought the winevwas coming up a bit bitter.
    The reineta is mostly used to cook. Just put some in the oven and they are quite good like that, spices, sugar, wine can be added in different recipies. My mum would bake them and season with cinamon and some times (it does not need it most times) put brown sugar for a healthy dessert

    The Reinata LOOKS like a Russet, my favourite apple that is sometimes available in Canada. However, it must be quite different when eaten. Russets are NOT mealy, have good texture and are a very long keeper, still delish even months after their (usually very late) harvest when the skin looks wrinkly like the face of an apple doll. Do look for Russets when you are back on this side of the Atlantic.

      Most apples are kept in cool stores to keep them post harvest for sale thru the year - as these apples mature they go floury .
      Apples left on the tree to catch a frost or 4 , remain crisp , sweeter , and jucier .
