    This tutorial is about how to harmonize any melody on your piano or keyboard. But, it's not about plunking out a melody in your right hand and putting a chord in your left hand. It's about learning a simple system of harmonizing a melody on the keyboard so you can sound like a professional.

    I like the way you have linked basic music theory to explain harmonisation. Excellent video. I can play chords in their respective root positions but experience difficulty when it comes to inversions. Do you have any tips and tricks to master inversions, please?

    Thank you is all I can say. I have been studying piano for a year and had no clue why melodies where played the way they are played, with this video I understand everything. Maybe I'll have to work in the inversions tho lol, they are complicated to improvise and to coordinate with the left hand at the same time thinking.

    For me, the easiest way in the world to spontaneously harmonize a melody with bass or root notes is to simply play the root note at one, three, or five note intervals plus one octave below the melodic notes played on the main downbeats. All I do is look at whatever note I’m playing on the right hand on the main downbeat and play with my left hand pinky the notes at 1, 3, or 5 note intervals below the current melodic note. So while I’m playing any given song melody “by ear” on my right hand, I am harmonizing not by ear but instead “by sight”. When discovered this simple trick, I was suddenly able to play songs by ear in piano which I was never able to do over my 40+ years playing the piano!

    Can you please also provide some guidance on harmonizing little more difficult songs (e.g. Can't help falling in love or What a wonderful world or Can you feel the love tonight). For the three songs that I mentioned, I have heard on UA-cam some really beautiful and innovative harmonized versions using Piano. However, just by listening, I am not able to figure out which chords are being played (my limitation, I guess). Some guidance and ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

    That's a very useful and easy-to-comprehend video and spreadsheet. I learnt fingering from the video too, it's intuitively easy for pianists, self-learners, however, struggle with it a lot. So if you are looking for a video ideas, tutorial on fingering would help me a lot :)
    Question: does the same technique apply to minor scales? So that in A minor, I'll use A, D, E triads primarily to harmonize each note.

    • @LearnColorPiano
      @LearnColorPiano  2 роки тому

      Since the Major and relative minor have the same tones, you can definitely apply this to both.

    God damn ive spent a decade just learning covers by memory and playing but now that im trying to learn theory to compose, videos like this are really enlightening. Im starting to really appreciate the “math” logic behind music. When i used to think people just made melodies from their mind it was intimidating but im really starting to understand how people can freestyle improvise or use certain rules to compose. Its really a beautiful thing. Great video thanks for this

    Sir: I need to get something explained in 4:06 section of this video. When you harmonize a note on the C Major Scale does the Chord that harmonizes the note get played below Middle C and does the Note that is harmonized get played on or after Middle C of the piano keyboard. Thank you, this is wonderful. R

      Hi, Thank you for the comment. The software I'm using is called VMPK. It stands for virtual midi piano keyboard. It's a free open source application. Just google it and you can download it for free. I'm recording using a screen capture application called Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture. I think you can download that one for free but you can use any screen capture software. I then superimpose the video over the keyboard overhead shot. I hope this helps you. Thank you again.

    Thank you very much for sharing this..I have seen people playing harmonies in right hand and always been confused how they figure out which notes other than the melody notes to play.
    This is one of the best explanations I have seen on youtube. Very resourceful. Also you clarified that one doesnt need to harmonize 8ths and 16ths notes where melody is fast paced- I also had doubt regarding that and you clarified it without asking. U are a very good teacher.
    Thanks for sharing this precious knowledge with us on UA-cam...

    So if I want to harmonize say Autumn Leaves, I use which ever inversion of a 1,4, or 5 chord in the right hand that has the correct melody note on top? And in the left hand I can play the root note of the chord or a 1,5 or a 151, or ?(what else)? Am I getting what you are saying? Also, how could I make Autumn Leaves, or any song, sound more jazzy? Add 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths? What would you do? Thanks in advance. Really trying to get this.

    • @LearnColorPiano
      @LearnColorPiano  6 років тому

      You're absolutely correct about the concept. This is about harmonizing simple melodies without using advanced color tones such as the ones you mentioned. You definitely can incorporate them but that goes beyond the simple harmonization in this tutorial. I would suggest that use the concept here and then add in those tones to make more jazzier sounding chords.

      Learn Color Piano Thank you. On another subject, Could you clarify where the improvising over the 2,5,1 progression concept comes in? Does a song, say even Happy Birthday, have to already have a 251 progression or is this something that is done separate from any existing song? I see lots of videos on this subject but no explanation of how to apply this to any song?

    I totally disagree with teachers who teach way above the heads of their students. This guy talks to people who actually don't know their scales, don't know names of any chords, etc. In short, people who have no foundation. So typical of people who want to teach intermediates or advanced, and have no patience for true beginners. So many Internet piano teachers fit this pattern. Sad! This guy is teaching the basics of composition to people who don't know the first thing about music theory.

However, you state while press the A Bass that this is two, three, six and seven. Will you please clear up that statement. Again, thank you much for sharing your genius with amateurs. Respectfully,

      Because the 4th note is present in the 4 chord as the root. The 5th note is not present in the 4 chord. The 5th note is harmonized with the 1st chord because it is present in that chord as the 5th.
