Penn Squall SQL50VSW Lever Drag 2-Speed Reels are due out in the Fall of 2013. These reels are perfect for trolling for tuna, shark and other big game saltwater species. Penn has wrapped the internals of the popular Penn International Reels into a lightweight graphite shell that is extremely durable. The 50VSW holds 565 yards of 80 lb mono or fill it with braid and get 1835 yards of 100 lb. Reels feature aluminum spools, four shielded ball bearings, an oversized power handle and a great drag system. The SQL50VSW puts out 40 lbs of drag at max and it is very smooth. To purchase or for more information on the Penn Squall SQL50VSW, go to the J&H Tackle Penn Squall Lever Drag 2-Speed Reel page on our web site. Here is the link: jhfi.sh/188uIwy

I bought two of these for land based shark fishing. Love them so much. I've got them set up with about 1200 yards of 100lb braid and haven't even come close to getting spooled. The drag system says only about 42 pounds of drag but it actually puts out about 68. Only recommendation is to buy a good pair of leather gloves. You have to guide the line with your finger and if that shark starts running the braid is gonna shred your skin.
I put mine to the scale after I got it I disassembled and re-greased the drag with Daiwa tournament ultra drag grease I got 44lbs max at full spool and 66lbs at max half spool. It’s a very capable LBSF reel.
So you guys think pulling a shark up to 10ft would be OK with this reel. The drag is there. It can obviously hold miles of braid. Watcha think?
@@johnnycortez46 duh
thank you, what I would be doing is beach sharking. I'm looking to get a lighter setup so big blacktips are more fun and so its not just dragging in a squirming weight.
Penn is very generous with line capacity. 80lb braid only got about 1600yrds not like the specs indicates 2450 yrds.
I caught a Great White 7ft using this reel land based its a great reel....
Great land based shark fishing reel
I have spool mi penn with 50 lb test dacron in a custom medium heavy rod an a crimp on 150 lb test mono with a 3 foot multy strand american wire and it works great for sailfish, tuna, mahi mahi, kingfish, and barracuda i of cours y live in México Baja California Sur
You would probably get between 200-250 yds of topshot. If you went with 80 lb mono you would get 300 yards.
Obviously down here in south texas everybody uses Avet across the board for shark fishing. But in your opinion since this reel is cheaper in price. Holds a ton of braid.
Has 40lbs of drag. Do you think this reel can handle 8foot sharks or even 10 ft ??
Sounds good.
Hi. Thanks for the videos. Between the Penn Squall 50vsw 2 speed and Fathom 60 ld 2 speed, for someone needing an overall trolling reel on the pacific coast for nothing above a 200 pound bluefin, which one would you recommend. I already have a fathom 40nld2 and I like it a lot. I checked out the squall 50 and it feels humongous.
For a pure trolling reel I’d go with the Squall 50VSW.
just bought one waiting for it to show up. I shark fishing off the beach.
how does it do? i plan on doing the same and i am buying this soon.
Johnathan Griffin They are great! If you are shark fishing from the beach, you can go smaller with the new Fathom Lever Drag Reels.
That's what I use it for i caught a great white on it in Australia...
Well so far I am impressed with the reel. Even if the reel cost more it would be worth it. I can sit inside my house with the windows open and hear the clicker when it goes off. I have a new Avet red 50 wide which is almost too pretty to use. Penn makes great reels and this thing is solid.
Trolling for tuna and shark.
Would it matter that it is graphite framed? for 130lb hollow core braid, for sword fishing/large sharks here in New Zealand. Or do i need a aluminum frame for this kind of load? and same question for the single speed squall 60. I do not want it exploding and ripping my roller guides off, with me flying back and impaling myself. Would the Shimano Talica 50 2-speed be the best I can get? bearing in mind we don't get Avet etc here in NZ & it is so expensive to get something sent from USA, with huge taxes & shipping fees etc (or can I order from USA without being bled for $ at the border through you guys?) I want a light reel btw...please help mate. Dave down under
Hello can the Knob be changed to an aftermarket knob on this reel? And can the knob pin be removed from the handle by unscrewing it?
Did you try sending the reels to Penn under warranty?
Seems like you are rough on your gear.
Im looking to get one and back it with 600yd of 100lb braid and top it with 300yd of 100lb mono, do you think it will hold like Im talking about?
Why?
if i wanted atleast 200 yards of 100lb mono how many yards will i have left to put 100lb braid on with it?
Maybe 500 yards.
thanks, what if i just dropped it down to 100yrds of 100# would it give me around 750yrds of 100# braid?
I think more like 600.
I put 750yard of 150lb XB hollow on mine spliced to 150 yards of 125lb Ande Monster Mono
For tuna and amberjack would this be a good reel or the penn fathom FTH60LD2 for jigging and maybe trolling
Email me at josh@jandh.com so we can discuss all your questions.
Qual modelo da vara pra essas carretilhas
How about for left handed
Would this reel be good for californian yellow tail ,dorado, roosterfish and yellow fin tuna
Way too big.
+jandhtackle but will it work i rather have bigger than smaller
I would not recommend it.
would this be a good reel for land based shark fishing? i am stuck between this reel and a senator 12/0
They are both very big. Can you use a smaller reel and fill it with braid?
jandhtackle i was thinking of filling it with 700 yrds of 130lb braid and the rest 130 mono topshot. the sharks i am targeting are 8 ft +. my only concern is that the lever drag system is more vulnerable to sand than the star drag on the senator. the senator also holds more line, but is not a 2 speed or has the drag this reel does.
Nicholas Dopler If you are going to fish with such a big reel, go with the Squall.
Why so much Line? What would you need this reel for?
umm? big fish... i’ve been spooled on reels bigger than this
If I load this thing with braid how would it be for manual deep dropping?
Why would you want to do that to yourself? Get an electric reel. It's not that much more expensive.
I can get these from a quarter of the price of a new electric
Freddy Grunwald An electric reel is $600.
This reel or a tld 50 which one should I buy
Squall. www.jandh.com/penn-squall-lever-drag-2-speed-reels.html
OG Luke TLD 50 is full graphite higher chances of the foot breaking so squall is best option
How would you spool this for LBSF
It’s great for it
Man I’m scared I’m gonna blow 400$ on and the sharks gonna rip all the line off
Too bad, Penn probably would have taken care of them for you, and you could at least have sold them off.
Every penn I owned didnt last 6 months the main gears get brokenon the spinning reels and I break the handles on the conventionals
Looks nice but I refuse to use penns again
No I take care of my gear id rather use avet
Nope I got mad and threw them in the ocean
