I was a stunt performer in that scene as part of Marikos group that gets killed before she fights with her naginata. I got to lie dead on the ground and watch her perform the fight sequence and while there WAS a stunt double present, both my friend and I were SO pumped at how amazing Anna performed her part which by both of us with no disrespect to her double, we both believe that Anna performed her fight scene better than the double did. Having been present during filming and watching it live, it looked better then than it did on camera. However the scene was about more than just the action. She was trying to prove to everyone that they weren’t free to leave that they were hostages. Such an amazing series and I’m so happy I was part of it.
Wonderful series and the whole cast was brilliant , and what can you say about Anna except shes one of the most beautiful stunning actresses ive ever seen , like an asian Megan Fox but with faaar more acting talent , hope she gets many more roles , some of those scenes and particularly the final scene in episode 9 had me in tears
She probably could have looked more effective and seemed less clumsy and physically worn out if she had used the more suitable women's weapon, the 'su yari,' instead of the 'naginata'.
@@jaanushiiemae2164 My friend from Kyoto sha actuall informed me that Naginata was a women's weapon greatly effective used also by men. No stunt double, and acts masterfully in two languages. Anna Sawai should be showered with acting nominations for her unforgettable performance. Team Mariko-sama forever!
Anna Sawai's portrayal of Mariko is transcendent. She brings to life one of the strongest, most complex characters ever put to paper, with heart and raw, unbridled power. Not many people can believably play a one-person army capable of toppling an empire. What a lightning storm of a performance she gives in episode 9, and throughout this series. @@luisquintero7359 I hope not. Not because I don't think she'd be a good fit, but because marvel has been releasing duds as of late. She deserves a proper script
@@youraveragepasser-by7367 Now yes, a proper script is definitely needed. That we can agree on. But given how Marvel is casting highly talented actors like Pedro Pascal, Julia Garner, and Vanessa Kirby, I don’t see why not try and cast her in a future role.

Her portrayal of Mariko was absolutely stellar. Then to literally go start shooting for Monarch the next day after completing Shogun is insane. Every single actor was amazing at their roles. This series along with Blue Eye Samurai has to dominate the award shows
It’s a crime if she doesn’t win awards for this role, the whole cast should get awards, especially the women cast, wow!! An Emmy for this show at least 🤞👌
“That’s just how I am. And that maybe a Japanese thing, where you’re feeling a lot but you feel the need to kinda cover that and not express as much.” So true. Only a Japanese actress who has grown up in Japanese society would be able to convey the depth of emotion in this scene. ❤
Anna was ultimately & absolutely amazing in this scene, which made me cry then and now while seeing her performance again in this video. Bravo Anna! 👏👏
From J-Pop star to fresh face on the film and TV scene, this was a dynamic way for many to be introduced to her and the capacity she has as a performer. I’m excited to see her career advance!
Oh my goodness. Emmy winning brought this in front of myself. I do remember this climactic scene I watched twice on its release day and it came back with way bigger impulse which made me cry. I do admire that Rachel, Justin and any other production staff members articulate the intention of every single scene and how to make it supreme. I need to resubscribe to Disney+ to watch them through again!!
This scene thoooo, throughout the show mariko almost never showed her anger, if her emotion changes usually we can hear from her tones, but here she finally showed her frustration and near the end she finally showed her tears too during her talk with ochiba and when she about to do seppuku, yet she's back to that almost no expression during her final time, just amazing.
The way she wanted to do the complicated things also but couldn’t cuz of the restrictions and safety concerns and also the way the final act still looks and feel complicated is so wonderful!!!
If they don’t resurrect Mariko in some future season, I hope they make more ancient Japan shows which feature exact copies of her character. Anna’s ability to enact that role and type of persona is something that the entire world wants to see more of. The decision to kill her off served a strategic purpose for her storyline, but it also deprives us of seeing what else she can bring to the table. Mariko will define Anna’s talent and style the same way as rocky defined Stallone’s or the same way the Terminator defined Schwarzenegger. Her character is one of the most iconic and powerful characters of our decade, if not our century and I would love to see more of her.
Mariko Sawai. The strength in her femininity, not only in this scene but in her actual life is a thing of beauty and grace. She easily sways the heart. The tone of this masterpiece takes my breath away. Simply graceful. Thank you all for this work of art.
Shogun is an outstanding production. Anna Sawai is one of many very strong actors in the cast and one of several beautiful women who were very easy on the eyes.
As a viewer vested in the story, Mariko readying her naginata was so bad-assed, I was looking forwards to seeing her wipe out the dozen soldiers blocking her way. But I'm secretly glad it didn't happen because it would have been so unrealistic it would have broken the immersion.
I have to admit that I was a bit underwhelmed at first to see Anna as Mariko- she just didn’t seem like the sweet lady from the book! But as the episodes went on any by the time i got to this scene, i found my self holding my breath. She is just absolutely stunning and had managed to capture the character’s femininity and resolve in a way that exceeded my imagination. Oh and the way they handled her relationship with Blackthorn was really well done, too, much more subtle than the book and 80s show.
"Oh and the way they handled her relationship with Blackthorn was really well done, too, much more subtle than the book and 80s show." Haven't read the book nor watch the previous show outside of snippets, but the subtleness is ingrained in Japanese culture back then and now so I guess it'd would be more accurate and appropriate. Perfectly in line with what they wished to represent, a more accurate depiction of Japanese history and culture in Western shows.
@@TheExorcismus In the book and the 80s show, their relationship eventually became an ongoing love affair in which they were sleeping together every night on their way back to Edo or something. I recall that in their book Learning From Shogun, the Japanese historians said that the most “dazzling innovation” that Clavell pulls off in his story is “arranging a love affair between Blackthorn and the wife one of the most powerful Daimyo” and making her behave more like a JAL stewardess than a female Samurai. They really toned that down a lot in the new show and contextualised it in a more believable way (I seem to remember Alvito asking Mariko about “dark thoughts” or something, too, which I don’t think was in the book or 80s show.)
The Shogun is a wonderful production with a lot of attention to detail, from the authentic costumes, art, language, and mannerisms, but the stone walls of Osaka Castle were the only ones where the art was sloppy.
