The first time they married Robin was 18, Maurice was 19 and Barry was 19. When Barry married Linda, he was 24. I think he was speaking from his experience. He said Robin was too young as well. But it wasn't printed in the paper.
I’m so excited that you’re doing this. Thank you. I grew up with the BeeGees and knew most of this but I’m so glad you’re doing this. Just Love your channel
In 1968 in the UK and Europe they were HUGE! At a concert in London the crowd pushed past PAUL MCCARTNEY to get at the Bee Gees. He said "We had our time, now it's their turn". Quite an accolade from a Beatle! Even Lennon, who could be pretty acerbic, said he liked their stuff! Magazines labelled them as The Beatles' successors. I always found it odd (? favoritism) that they tried to make Robin a ward of the court for his supposed "erratic behaviour" while at the same time Maurice had become the town drunk wrecking cars. They knew he was needed in the band (Up to the breakup Robin sang @50% of their hits.) Stigwood paid big bucks to buy off Robin's contract with Vic Lewis and get him back in the Bee Gees. It was also strongly believed that record execs coerced DJ's not to play Robin's solo songs, but he had a hit with his first one anyway "Saved by the Bell". Their own dad said he hoped Robin would fall flat on his face. One of his meal tickets was walking out the door. He and Molly became isolated because Molly supported Robin. The fight over the "A" and "B" side could have easily been overcome with a "Double A side", both were terrific songs. The Beatles often did that. Regardless, they needed time away. Robin said he felt like he was drowning in a whirlpool. They all needed a break to grow up. They were much younger than we could imagine and under immense pressure. Yes, Robin was only 18 when he married and his wife, who was older, had to sign his contracts for him. It was likely a good thing that they broke up because they said they broke up as boys but came back together as men with their priorities straight and respect for each other. They also matured and learned not to listen to the lies the press told about them pitting brother against brother.
Nice recap. I didn't know about Stigwood buying out Robin's contract thanks for sharing that tidbit. Yes, they were soooo young, it's easy to forget sometimes - they were just kids growing up in the spotlight.
The honesty is so refreshing and shows how special these lads were. You have to remember some of these headlines were rubbish, usually based on rumours. Setting one brother up against the other...like a lot of band members in other groups. Barry was around 24 when he married. They wanted to establish as individuals. They'd been in each other's pockets since young kids. Loving sharing this doco with you!
I've watched this so many times!! The "rings" thing was when Barry was in his teens in Australia. He married Linda in 1970 on his 24th birthday. Robin and Maurice were both 19 when they married the first time. "Pilly, Potty, and Pissy", LOL!! The "First Fame" syndrome is what broke them up for that short time, and the news made up headlines about them that the other brother didn't actually say and that hurt each of them.
Barry was married in 1966 while they lived in Australia and she came to England with them, however the marriage fell apart pretty quickly once the Bee Gees started to gain fame and she went back to Australia. Barry was separated but still legally married when he met Linda in 1968. I have no idea why it took so long for his divorce to be final.
You're doing great....love your reactions...... interesting trivia.....all four brothers married their 1st wives at 19..... Barry married an Australian girl called Maureen Bates in 1966 ......divorced in 1970.....thereafter married Linda on his 24th birthday and they're still together , Robin married Molly in 1968 at age 19 , had 2 children Spencer , and Melissa.... divorced in 1985......thereafter married Dwina...... Maurice (pronounced Morris) married Lulu in Feb of 1968 also at age 19 divorced in 1974 thereafter married Yvonne .... youngest brother Andy married Kim Reeder in 1977 also at age 19 has a daughter called Peta who lives in Australia..... BTW ......you can check out the singing chops of the next generation of Gibbs in the tribute album they put together for their dads for Father's Day called the Gibb Collective.....it's worth a watch.......
Robin was 18 (just shy of 19) when he got marred. Mo was 19. Barry waa marred before, before they left Australia, he and Maureen divorced after he met Linda.
They were all very young when they married for the first time and the fact that none of these marriages lasted suggests they were too young. They had been performing and supporting the family since they were boys so they probably felt older and more experienced in life than other people their age.
@lclark6854 Robin's marriage lasted 13 years. It ending had little to do with age. imo There were issues, like Molly not wanting to move to the U.S. So they lived separate lives. Maurice had a drinking problem. Which is why his marriage to Lulu didn't work out. His second marriage, when he was older, could have ended too. Yvonne chose to stay.
A lot of information on the lads! Very cool. I think they all got married close together because they finally had time for women. They weren’t always busy working. And back then, you married the girl you wanted to sleep with. Good girls didn’t have pre-marital sex, lol! That’s what you would say, but I bet everybody did. You didn’t let your parents find out if you did, so you just got married. I think they were right about having to be apart. Especially at that young age. Really have to sort of find yourself at 18 to 21 years of age. What a great story about them. There’s been documentaries about them but I think a movie about their life and fame would be fabulous. Thank you Eddy! As always ❤
Maurice was 19 when he married Lulu. She was a huge pop star at the time and I believe that Barry’s thinking was that it was all too much, too soon. Which ended up being the case. But even after they divorced a few years later they still remained friends. When he died suddenly in 2003 she attended his funeral.
That’s what people used to do…people got married young, raised a family, etc. Before the s*xual revolution in the late 60’s and early 70’s…most folks also didn’t have s*x until married. Barry was talking about when he was young …being a rogue…once he got married to Linda that was it for him. They are still married today and have 5 grown children and last I heard 8 grandchildren. Barry once said, that to him family was everything….without his family he couldn’t do what he does. His brothers used to poke fun at him …saying he had a boring life….( he didn’t go clubbing or parties, etc. Barry said he would just rather spend time with his family.
Robins PARENTS wanted to make him a ward of the state??? Why? Also if he was 19 at the time, wasn't he legally considered an adult? So how could they legally do that? And DID they do it?
Barry told in an interview that he always wanted to have a relationship from the age of 13 and that it was normal and usual to marry very young. The marriage gave him the feeling of home, safety, to have arrived. Im not a psychologist, but maybe there was something in their education that all siblings married so young. Their father was russian and I know, that still today russian girls have to be married at a young age, could be, "teached" this his kids?!
Their father is not Russian. Its a joke they used to tell, just like when they say "Mum is 90 years old but a lot of fun". Hugh Gibb was born in Manchester, England and his father was born in Scotland.
They didn’t have conventional childhoods. As young children they frequently moved in the middle of the night to avoid being evicted for non payment of rent. As young teens they were responsible for supporting the family since they could make more money than their father did, and he acted as their manager to protect them. They worked in an adult environment at clubs and bars. They spent all their time around with adults and felt like they were grown up, like most teenagers do. I imagine it also provided a sense of security and stability they craved.
