- Want to know how to make a floor lamp? Any DIY floor lamp I've made before has always added a significant upgrade to the aesthetics of my home. It may seem intimidating at first but you don't need a lot of woodworking tools to make it. The only reason I'm using these big tools is because I've saved up over time to purchase them.
Lamps provide light to your home, why not be as creative as possible with them? It's a great woodworking project to practice different types of joinery and yes, it makes a great gift!
I really love how this one turned out with the walnut wood and cherry wood contrasting each other. Might be my new favorite pair!

Have looked at various diy floor lamp videos and your way of explaining things helps those who are at many levels, as long as people come to watch the video with a learning mind set (not directed at any given level experience wise).
I am only 3 minutes and 26 seconds into this video, yet to see the finished product, the extra steps you have taken help a beginner to understand what it actually takes to achieve high standards as I wondered what I would need to drill through long lengths of wood and how to hide the cord as I have cats who will play with almost anything 😂

Is it safe to run a 110v cable through wood groove like that? I mean could it heat up for example and cause fire?
I suppose you could make the groove bigger but I’ve had no issues with this since I’ve made it and use it daily. It takes a lot of heat / flame to catch wood on fire. There are techniques where people torch wood for protection and it doesn’t full blown burn. My point is, I’m no expert in science, but I’m confident it’s safe as many lamps have wires running through grooves…now if the wire was exposed through the protective shielding, I’d be a bit concerned.
Did those joints fail yet? It’s a cool design and the end result looks good, but given your experience and tools available, i find it hard to believe you couldn’t get more creative with the joinery.
Yep they’re holding up today! They don’t hold a lot of weight. And you’re right, I’ve contemplated different ways on the joinery for this…like floating tenons with channels drilled through, but…it wasn’t needed at the time. I guess we will see in another year! Lol

I guess we can all make things hard on ourselves 🤷🏻♂️ before I bought the fancier tools I always found my way around a project with a table saw and chop saw and hand tools.
