Modern and retro. So… combine the two words… the Metro Lamp. Forgot to say that for me, this is one of the nicest things you’ve ever made, Shaun. The fact that it didn’t swivel as nice as you wanted, doesn’t detract from how beautiful this piece of furniture is. A bloody nice job my good man 👌
I love the flush cut wire channel. Watched simply to see how that was done. Adding that one to the mental tool belt. I would love to see a mini version too haha
U guys are great craftsmen! As someone who is wanting to get into woodworking I've been binge-watching your videos for the past week or so. Love the style of your videos but most likely I really really like the design of your furniture! Top class!
Lovely Lamp! But, beginner asking: is your planer set up correctly? at 1:43 you can clearly see gaps on both ends. Shouldnt it be flat? Ty for elaborating:
And actually if you look at 1:59 the same board sitting on the mdf top workbench does appear to be slightly bowed still (unless the workbench is concave? Unlikely though)
Hi Shaun. Super floor lamp. I would have called it Modular. For a smoother slide from side to side. I would have opted for a brass disc with a vertical upright edge. Both top and bottom of the sliding disc identical perhaps H 4mm in total edge height. Tightly fitted inside a silicone casing. Parallel to the channel with ample space to add wax for a smooth action. Keep up the awesome designs. Love your work. Regards Bon 👣
This is absolutely STUNNING. You really should consider making plans for this, because I can guarantee there are tons of us who would love to make it! Fantastic work, and it’s definitely got a Midcentury vibe to it!
I love this design, and it's awesome to watch the design and experimentation process unfold. It's honestly really encouraging to see examples of making a design work even when you're not 100% sure about everything before you start. One or two ideas for future iterations: SWIVEL MECHANISM: - Replace the screw/washer swivel with an inlaid heavy-duty lazy susan bearing (or lazy shoesan 😉), topped with a brass plate to match the other fittings. - Provided the bearing swivels smoothly enough, replace the fixing knob with a strong neodymium magnet in the bottom of the arm, and corresponding magnets (also covered with thin brass) inlaid every X° along that front arc, to act as sort of soft positive stops (Mildly encouraging stops? Gently optimistic stops? Is there an actual name for it?) - If the weight of the lamp isn't centered on the bearing, you could add support with a small ball-wheel castor behind the arm-magnet. The wheel would roll along a shallow rounded groove routed into the base, reducing friction and keeping a small air gap between the arm and base magnets. LAMP/SHADE: - Add a solid vertical arm between the lamp and the top bar, so the lamp doesn't swing around so much every time it rotates. - The shade looks pretty opaque in the video but that may just be the camera, otherwise is it possible to get the veneer any thinner? I've seen lampshades made from laminated plane shavings that look lovely and translucent but it's a lot of work and you don't get that smooth face grain...
Really appreciate it! And thanks for the suggestions. Not sure I will make another one of these, but maybe other lamps in the future. I have made lamp shades from lighter color wood (maple, oak, cherry) and the light shines through way more. I was a little bummed with how little it came through the walnut, but I guess that shouldn't have been a surprise.
I also made a lamp; it is funny to find out you used the exact method as I did to hide the wiring. Mine doesn't swivel however, I put some felts under the foot and turn it as a whole. Main difference is the fact that my lamp is height adjustable, it has one vertical part and the horizontal part can be inclined in fixed positions. I had to make the foot quite heavy, so I ordered some lead pallets. Just let me know if you'd like some photos.
For the adjusting slot, I would consider putting something on the bottom side of base groove. A flat brass track with a delrin/uhmw polyethylene washer would keep the bolt from digging into the wood.
Absolutely beautiful 👏 You got my fallow off this lamp alone. I'm just now getting into woodworking, and this is a truly inspiring piece. Thanks for sharing the process!
Nice build man! There’s a lot going on in this one. I love to see the incorporation of brass. It’s also nice to see your aesthetic matching throughout your entire line. 👏🏼
Fun design Shaun! I like the swivel feature, even if it isn't ideal, it think it's great. The brass really brings the look to the next level. Great video!
Love the crane lamp! Would be cool if you had a steel hook on the wire holding the shade and the shade can raise and lower by turning an industrial wheel. Super beautiful build. You killed it.
Hey i have a question for you! When you glue up the 2 pieces at 2:00min in your video you didn't invert the sens of the growth rings. Is there a reason ?
Just a quick sidenote - Modern, in design, is generally referring to designs stemming from the Modernist movement. Early 20th century to just after the mid century, when Post-Modernism started to take over. Mid-Century Modernism is just a part of the overall Modernist movement (as the name suggests, from the middle of the 20th century). What I'm saying is that "Modern" doesn't mean contemporary, it's just a set of design philosophies that affect and shape how and why the design looks and feels. And this lamp is absolutely gorgeous.
I made a floor lamp last year in a mission style out of QS white oak and used a basic pendant lamp for the hardware and a color smart bulb to control with Alexa. I also wired a basic toggle switch just in case. For the shade I used an acrylic flower shade off Amazon. It looks like a hanging flower. The best part is you can change the color of the flower and brightness with a auditory command
This is a really nice piece of work. I was slightly skeptical when you used a screw to support the back but you could easily create a metal support 20mm (UK dims) chs welded to a plate 300 x 40 x 2/3mm … looks like a T and that would give more stability! Very original piece of work 👌🏼
Very nice, This is similar to my headphones stand i made, same basic angles but the base , I did a bunch of angled cuts has that f22 raptor look, the lines and angles that is.
Just an idea for a future lamp: it might be cool to conceal the wiring with a strip of brass instead of wood to extend the brass aesthetic all the way down the back of the lamp.
Beautiful! I need to build a floor lamp too and that definitely is an inspiration. Need to find a way to make that framework for the shade since I don’t have a CNC. Well done!
Nice work, always enjoy your designs and builds. I recently completed a floor lamp and struggled finding hardware I liked. Where did you get the switch and knob?
I think it would also work better if the swivel was at the back and the pivot at the front. When you look at the weight hanging off the front the the lamp it would be putting pressure onto the front swivel action but if it was on the back it would almost be lifting it up for you?
@@shaunb66 Using nylon bushings around metal hardware is a good idea to reduce friction at those points of rotation. Also, felt can get "sticky" as it compresses, and it can hold moisture that attracts dust and make things harder on your finish. A thin piece of HDPE or acetyl/Delrin sheet would be smoother, equally unobtrusive, and pretty easy to retrofit. (I'm already thinking more complicated solutions as I type, but I'll stop here before I get annoying... too late.)
@@elliotstokes6134 Yep, considered doing that too, but didn't like the look of the brass hardware being on the backside. Form over function on that one, for sure.
@@elliotstokes6134 If it does lift up on the back, you would have the bolt being pulled into the bottom of the lamp and there would be significant friction and wear
@@shaunb66 You could build a vinyl record player stand that only plays. . . wait for it. . singles. . to complete the ensemble. That would be truly THEMATIC.
I'll keep watching to see what the finished result is, but my initial thought is that if you have the base swiveled all the way to one side, won't it be really unstable? This thing is beautiful so far. Well done. Cheers
I love this. I was searching for furniture for my future house and I discovered the style called “Japandi” it’s a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetic. Not sure how I feel about the name but I think this lamp fits the description.
Maybe a motor at the base where the knob is, a couple extra buttons above/below the rheostat, all coupled together by some 3D printed/CNCd gear and track along the swivel arch. Now you have the ability to swivel without the need to get out of your chair! 👍
Love it! Why even add the word "Floor" at that point, you know? If you call it just "Lamp" it allows all the readers to impress upon the lamp their own feelings haha
In this spirit, even "Lamp" is too categorizing. Perhaps someone might consider it a shadow caster! 🙃😲🙃 Change your point of view and your perception of the world will change!

Noticed this and went to the comments to see if I was alone! Wondering if it's the planer or if the board was still bowed after jointing...

Any chance you can share where you got the lamp hardware like the dimmer switch and socket. I really like that switch
mini ball transfer bearings my friend, recess some of them into the bottom of the lamp arm and it will swing side to side with the sweetest of glides!

Mid-retro Century? What about HDPE bumpers for the underside of the sliding part? Like the stuff on the underside of table saw fences?
