Thanks for pointing this out, I too thought it was odd. I’m looking at the trance x 1 with its higher end components and on initial watch this video almost put me off, but I know so many people who rave about this bike as an awesome all mountain at a great price point.
Ive had mine TX3 since march and i agree with the rear suspension. DPS is the worst shock ive ever owned, switched it out for a dpx2 factory after a few rides and maan, what a difference. Can honestly say that this bike is the best ive ever had! Also changed the Derailleur to gx(much needed), and maxed out volume spacers in both rear and fork suspension. With RS gold you can easily increase travel to 160mm by simply removing one spacer inside the fork. With these changes, the bike is way more playful and fast. I did not think i would keep the fork but it really is alright after some tweeks.
I think you should have mentioned the spec upgrades of the Trance X 2, which actually is the "budget" Trance X, that comes with Fox 36, SLX, etc. as the price difference to the Marin is not too much. ;)
My brother just bought this bike. I haven’t seen it yet, but he’s really enjoying it. Big upgrade for him and I think with fork swap down the road and a driveline upgrade it’ll be a fantastic bike for him.
That's why I bought the same one and changed all weak points on it: - chainset from SX to GX - fork RS 35 Gold to Pike Ultimate 2023 - Shimano to Code RSC - Added some tokens into Rear shock. Now it's became much nicer bike 😊
Seems like it could almost be a win, but at this price point, if I see SX, I move along. That derailleur was bouncing around so much it was comical. Shimano won with their budget drivetrains, and SX (maybe NX too) is just like "do whatever you have to to make it cheap" and it shows.
I like sram shifting more than shimano. Feels more natural with the thumb for both directions and shifts faster and smoother. Interesting how people favor different styles. I usually look for sram shifting and shimano brakes.
Just FYI, I changed the shifter and derailleur for slx and it worked just fine. I sold the SX stuff for what I paid for slx too. Effectively a free upgrade. I don't know what the hyperglide cassette/chain stuff feels like but my set-up, bar being a bit clunky, works great
I've been saying this for a couple years. Sram entry level is CRAP! Shimano LX is a bit softer and heavier than XT, but it works! Reliably! My Rockey Mountain with SX couldn't even be tuned from the shop floor. Had to upgrade to GX within 3 months.
If my bike made funny noises I'd spend a couple hours tinkering to figure out the problem and fix it, not just write it off as a noisey bike. I love my trance X 3.
Same here but it's a thing to know before you buy a bike. Not everyone is able to work on their bike and will bring it to the local shop ($$). Bottom line, it's not a deal breaker but a good thing to know when you buy a new bike.
@@MrCharlesPoulin that really just comes down to the shop that sold it to you. Giant just ships them off in the box then the shop builds it up for the customer. Most people are saying they haven't dealt with noise on this exact same bike. Whoever build the bike neglected grease somewhere. It's also an incredibly easy job to make sure everything is greased, you really don't need a shop for that. But they should do it in the first place.

I'm loving these value bike reviews! A suggestion for a future video: test out some bikes like these with some intermediate riders who HAVEN'T ridden high-spec expensive bikes. I really like your reviews, but it would also be nice to hear what a rider like me would say about these value bikes. I'm particularly interested in the difference between different price points for the same bike (e.g., Siskiu T7 vs T8, or the 3 levels of the Rift Zone)
Great idea. If I was doing a review I would be like, "I rode it hard and didn't crash. It was awesome!" It would be pretty cool to do this with kids full suspension bikes in 26" & 20". too
Yeah it did. That rear suspension didn't seem to handle it too well. I bet that derailleur was part of the noise issue also. Looks like there were set up issues on this bike.
I've been riding a Trance X 29er 1 for a few years and it is like a luxury sport sedan: Not a true sports car and not a true luxury car, it's somewhere in between.
The carbon version is A. Quiet. Really quiet. B. More lively, but not as much as the 27.5 I ride in the high position. Climbing isn't punchy like the 27.5, but stable and tons of traction up chunk. This bike loves chunk. And is fast AF downhill.
Bought mine brand new 2021 Trance X 29r, Owned for 5 months as of today. Had nothing but problems. Frame was completely replaced by Giant under warranty in 1 month of owning cause a weird crazy noise, and the Sram shifting is tremendously horrible. My rear brakes completely went out causing me to crash hardcore and end up in hospital. The guys at Dons Bicycles in Redlands CA where purchased felt so bad and were baffled of all these failures of brand new bike. They hooked me up with upgraded slx Shimano brakes... Than my dropper seat completely failed while on long ride. I literally got of the bike and walked it back home so disappointed. This is my third Giant and love how this bike rides climbs etc.... but highly recommend spending extra money for another bike for future buyers.
Is the alloy version really affordable? I was so alienated by the price policy of Specialized, that I stopped looking into their offerings. Did they really did the unthinkable and put an affordable bike in their lineup of 14.000$ bikes?
recieved my trance X 3 and there is 0 rattling or any other cons you mentioned. one thing is a lil bit annoying, shifting is weird with this shifter. and it shifts soooo delayed ... but maybe i need to set it up better. but overall, the bike is damn fun
Great bike and they are very accurate stating how active the suspension is. However they fail to say "active" in a good way. Its almost like a short travel enduro! It feels like they wanted to say great things about it but giant didnt want to pay their way to the top.
If you don't like the shifting just replace the shifter and rear derailleur with Shimano Dior or SLX it'll all work. You could replace the internals on the fork and it'll work a whole lot better too.
I have owned this bike for a little over a year now (size XL) and logged about 1000 miles on it. I recognize a lack of efficiency (to be fair, my point of comparison is an XC hardtail), but the compliance and traction have helped me tremendously on more technical climbs. An oval chainring made a big difference here too, causing me to match and even beat my climbing time with that of the XC hardtail on rougher climbs. I do not recognize the noise issue, but maybe I got lucky. I did upgrade the drivetrain to GX after an unfortunate mishap bent the stock derailleur, and upgraded to carbon bars with a bit more rise to accommodate my height, and some carbon cranks as well as installing a lighter cassette, as this bike is a bit overweight off the shelf. Also I swapped the tyres for a Rekon / Ikon combo since I do not ride particularly rough terrain (big roots, but no sharp rocks). I used this bike in a 24 hour relay marathon and the plushy suspension helped a lot in warding off the fatigue. Concerning firming up the suspension, I am considering a volume spacer in the rear shock.
@@Lenser haven't weighed it exactly, but with the carbon parts and lighter drivetrain I've saved about 550 grams relative to the stock weight. This is not counting the tyres.
I bought the 3 and negotiated to have my LBS upgrade the shifter/derailleur to GX and the fork to a Yari. They were awesome and gave me near full value for the stock components and did the work as a part of the deal. Very quiet, handles great and is likely as good or better than the 2 for less dough.
Weird that the regular Trance 29 is $2,400 USD and gets you a Z2 and Deore 12 Spd. 10-51T. Anticipating a new model maybe this August. Of course you won't be able to buy either. Hopefully next year spec of this bike can get a Z1 and Deore.
Yeah, I was surprised when they said theirs was noisy. The Trance I had was very quiet, the Ripmo I have now is noisier with its infamous cable rattle.
Also, the SX derailleur has a plastic body that can fail catastrophically. After only 5 rides, mine broke off the mounting stud and embedded itself in my rear wheel causing a skid. I'm very disappointed in SRAM. This is dangerous.
Giant does a good job of explaining how their Maestro suspension avoids robbing you of pedaling power from a pedal bob perspective and it makes sense in a purely kinematic way, but what I'm getting here is that the "fully active" aspect of their suspension (which they also push in their marketing) is absorbing too much on the climbs when you just want your back wheel to pop over stuff. Is that it? ...by the way, this is the review I've been looking for, a basic performance assessment of the entry/mid model on what matters to entry/mid riders. Thanks.
I just ordered a trance 29 x 1 (panther green) for a bargain sale price of £1600.... Mods: first off replace those terrible tektro 4pots for some XTR 4pots for ultimate braking performance. Next is that cheapo praxis chainset, again XTR boost cranks with an oval chainring (works), XTR rear mech, shifter & cassette. And finally a set of DT XM1700 wheels.... Want to ride it to see if a 35mm stem is better than the stock 50. Looking forward to taking it out on a spin once i finish fitting the mods!
I’ve only been riding a little over a year so admittedly I don’t much.... I watched two other reviews on this bike but the more expensive model. Trance advanced one but it has the same rear shock and same geo. One review actually compared the bike to the bike Mike Leavie did the Ibis Ripple and the guy said it climbed as good as that bike. The other review also said something close to the same. My question is it to guys with different opinions or are the shocks tuned differently or what???
This video is extra bad with the volume difference between the music and the presenters speaking, especially when Sarah talks.. Otherwise an amazing video!
The 2 build is definitely a big improvement in all areas aside from the rear shock, but that DPS probably just needs some volume spacers. That RS 35 Gold fork is basically impossible to get dialed as is typical with motion control forks, you either get resonable mid-stroke and god awful chatter off the top, or tolerable off the top and non-existent mid-stroke.
For the same price I could get a Scott genius. Thank god it doesn’t have an sx drivetrain. Is the nx drivetrain any good? The main turn off for the giant trance x 29 3 was the sx drivetrain. Good thing my local bike shop has both brands. I am save up for the Scott genius. The only thing that I would change about the Genius is the sx cranks and the sx shifter.
Dang, no threaded BB... I was thinking about getting one of these for my wife. Price point is excellent for what looks to be a really nice bike though.
Yeah I have a Trance 29 2021 and the rear 115mm work flawlessly. I run around 27% sag on shock and it just eats everything during my type of descends and during uphills it stays efficient while tracking the ground like a charm. Very happy with the bike but I cant wait to take it to a bikepark to test those 115mm :).

I have this bike since 2023 I bought it (part) because it was active while climbing this thing can climb anything even with the coil shock that's currently on. Quality out of the box was terrible, I pretty much bought a frameset at this point since stock components aren't worth peanuts 🥜 Giant quality of frames, okay, yes bearings last forever but all the rest is either heavy and cheap or just cheap. There’s this guy in my city that sells giant bikes for cost price, idk why. But my friend bought one from him, a giant trance 1, for $2500, the same price as this. It has fox performance elite suspension, sram GX and carbon wheels
Where I live, Manitoba, I'm finding it hard to decide between low and high on my advanced pro 1. Low setting is very low slung and makes the bike pretty poppy, but we have punch climbs and do just as much climbing as descending. This makes the high setting much more efficient. I also find the suspension very active. I normally run 30% sag in the rear, with this bike running 25% still has a lot of bobbing. Trail switch is needed.
We have to give a shoutout to Sarah's riding ability, but also the cinematographers. Pink Bike has in my mind the BEST overall mtb reviews on UA-cam. They deserve far more subscribers.

Honestly, he would be better of changing the rear shock before changing the fork. The fork is actually really capable, fox DPS on this bike is not.
That's why I bought the same one and changed all weak points on it:
- chainset from SX to GX
- fork RS 35 Gold to Pike Ultimate 2023
- Shimano to Code RSC
- Added some tokens into Rear shock.
Now it's became much nicer bike 😊
@@Lenser need to check) will do it in 2 weeks, now on vacation dude)
Hey pinkbike, wouldn't it make sense to try the bike in the high position if you dislike the suspension characteristics with it in the low position?
Stop making sense 😃
The high position is much better in technical stuff.
Why didn’t you talk about the trance X 29 2 with Shimano SLX?
Seems like it could almost be a win, but at this price point, if I see SX, I move along. That derailleur was bouncing around so much it was comical. Shimano won with their budget drivetrains, and SX (maybe NX too) is just like "do whatever you have to to make it cheap" and it shows.
I like sram shifting more than shimano. Feels more natural with the thumb for both directions and shifts faster and smoother. Interesting how people favor different styles. I usually look for sram shifting and shimano brakes.
@@dylan-5287 sure the high end 12 speed stuff from sram is fine but sx is pure shit.
Just FYI, I changed the shifter and derailleur for slx and it worked just fine. I sold the SX stuff for what I paid for slx too. Effectively a free upgrade. I don't know what the hyperglide cassette/chain stuff feels like but my set-up, bar being a bit clunky, works great
My nx drivetrain from 3 years ago is still Crisp, doesn't feel cheap
I've been saying this for a couple years. Sram entry level is CRAP!
Shimano LX is a bit softer and heavier than XT, but it works! Reliably!
My Rockey Mountain with SX couldn't even be tuned from the shop floor. Had to upgrade to GX within 3 months.
That should be my bike I ordered it in December. I’m half way there
I have trance x 2 and my bike is silent. Love it.
I have a trance x and it doesn't make any noise for me
@@MrCharlesPoulin that really just comes down to the shop that sold it to you.
Hosts: five stars. Videography: right there with the hosts. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Request: 5 minute separate video (narrated by our hosts) of the trails you tested on and where they are: lots of work yes. Much appreciated if you can do it. Even 2 minutes!
It was awesome!"
It would be pretty cool to do this with kids full suspension bikes in 26" & 20". too
That huck to flat looked like it hurt!
It looked like the SX deraileur is going to fall off lol
Yeah it did. That rear suspension didn't seem to handle it too well. I bet that derailleur was part of the noise issue also. Looks like there were set up issues on this bike.
I've been riding a Trance X 29er 1 for a few years and it is like a luxury sport sedan: Not a true sports car and not a true luxury car, it's somewhere in between.
The carbon version is
A. Quiet. Really quiet.
B. More lively, but not as much as the 27.5
I ride in the high position. Climbing isn't punchy like the 27.5, but stable and tons of traction up chunk. This bike loves chunk. And is fast AF downhill.
That rea derailleur getting railed on that drop to flat and the chain smacking the ground was hilarious to me. Im easily entertained I guess hahaha
Why is anybody complaining about the climb switch. Its there for a reason
A remote lockout would be preferable, not available on X 3.
I agree. I was kind of confused.
@@chriskojali4527 I dont think that you need it on a trail bike. On a xc bike its a diffrent story
Will you guys do a review on the 2021 stumpjumper comp alloy?
I would like to see a stumpjumper review. The stumpy alloy looks like a good budget bike.
Is the alloy version really affordable?
I was so alienated by the price policy of Specialized, that I stopped looking into their offerings.
Did they really did the unthinkable and put an affordable bike in their lineup of 14.000$ bikes?
@@rolux4853 look at their website

one thing is a lil bit annoying, shifting is weird with this shifter. and it shifts soooo delayed ... but maybe i need to set it up better.
but overall, the bike is damn fun
Great bike and they are very accurate stating how active the suspension is. However they fail to say "active" in a good way. Its almost like a short travel enduro! It feels like they wanted to say great things about it but giant didnt want to pay their way to the top.
I barely saw the suspension moving during that segment.
If you don't like the shifting just replace the shifter and rear derailleur with Shimano Dior or SLX it'll all work. You could replace the internals on the fork and it'll work a whole lot better too.
Mike: "Alright Sarah" "ok Sarah" Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah. I don't think every segment needs the introduction.
lol true
The Trance X 29 2 model fixes the noise problems, but I'm still playing around with the shock to find the perfect settings for it
Yea i have the X 29 2 and i never notice noise on the trails
Replace the rockshox 35 and sx eagle, it will be totally different.(I also have one....)
Yeah they are pretty shit
What do you suggest for a fork upgrade?
I bought the 3 and negotiated to have my LBS upgrade the shifter/derailleur to GX and the fork to a Yari. They were awesome and gave me near full value for the stock components and did the work as a part of the deal. Very quiet, handles great and is likely as good or better than the 2 for less dough.

I have a normal trance the one with 27.5 and I love it
Had the 2020 27.5, swapped it for a 29er enduro after 8 months.
I have a 2020 Trance Advanced Pro 29 and it's one of the best bikes I've ever had.
I had a 2020 27.5 Trance, was ok, but too small for me as I was between frame sizes and had to size down, now on a Ripmo AF which is way better.
Weird that the regular Trance 29 is $2,400 USD and gets you a Z2 and Deore 12 Spd. 10-51T. Anticipating a new model maybe this August. Of course you won't be able to buy either. Hopefully next year spec of this bike can get a Z1 and Deore.
Im planning to buy this bike.. should I go for it ?? Experience share your opinion plz ..
Upgrade the suspension front and rear and it should be good
Suspension is the best part about this bike. The brake pads, rotors, and drivetrain are the weak spots.
That 35 gold and performance dpx definitely need to go. So many better options.
@@skullsroad3642 actually I'd change those components too. A GX or SLX would be perfect on it. XT brakes as well
I got trance x 2 2021 and it is awesome. I Would totally recommend to review that one.
Waiting for mine to come in, July is the eta. How sick is this bike? I’m getting real giddy to ride it!!
Got mine in november, she shreds
I have this bike and the only noise mine makes is the rear hub at coast and the tires rolling on dirt.
Would you make a YT Jeffsy Core 2 27,5 rewiew Please ?
Such a good intro for these videos, always enjoy watching that.
Your comments about the suspension remind me of my 2017 Stumpjumper. Less nimble climber than my race-spec 2021 Xl Sight
So why didnt you order a higher model ?
@@LutzScharf because the higher model works out a lot more expensive overall, and still doesn't have as good a spec.
That rear derailleur on the huck to flat was scary af
I wonder if you add some air to the suspension then it would be a bit more lively
They said they added air to get 25% sag. Giant has been recommending 25% on the Trance for years. This one's no different.
Giant laughed me out of their shop 6 months ago, when asked about availability. What's changed?
Well I ordered mine in December. That told me I might get it by Christmas
I ordered mine late December 2020 and got it mid March. I love in CA and ordered from a local Giant dealer.
I ordered mine in late Dec and it was in pick last monday. Any day now.

I’ve had the sram sx shifter/ long cheap break lever and I put the brake on then slid on the shifter.
Disappointing that a longer travel maestro is seemingly a worst platform. The 115 in the current trance was such a good rear platform

I have a trance advanced pro 3, not the X. I would avoid the sram SX if possible. Mine came with sx and after a year I had to replace the shifter and the chain. The cassete had some issues that I fixed so it's not a huge problem but the crank and derailleur are still going strong. I would at least go with NX if you can afford it, or buy the sx knowing that you're going to have to replace stuff after a while

Does running less sag result in softer suspension? Surely if you wanted to make it feel firmer you would want less air and more sag?
I was wondering if the bike was an active peddler because the rail has a lot of bumps? He said he was watching the shock moving up and down, would the bike still have peddle bob on flat ground?
I have this bike since 2023 I bought it (part) because it was active while climbing this thing can climb anything even with the coil shock that's currently on.
Quality out of the box was terrible, I pretty much bought a frameset at this point since stock components aren't worth peanuts 🥜

Worth noting Giant recommends 25%

@@dylan-5287 single pivot isn't always bad; trek, kona, evil, and marin all use a type of linkage-driven single pivot suspension
@@clmfilms8103 I'd argue trek and evil are different. Trek uses a pivot at the axle, along with another brand, think it's orbea. That totally changes it up and makes it technically 4 bar. And of course evil has that crazy DW delta suspension. Not sure of the details but I know it's supposed to be really efficient unlike normal single pivots. And I love Marin, started with them. Just saying Polygon is mass producing bikes when nothing else is available. Why would only they get frames compared to so many bigger companies? They're producing cheaper bikes and using a simple suspension design. Not bad bikes, I've tried their siskiou, but compared to a trance which I've also tried. Trance any day.
