    Thank you SO MUCH for posting these videos! The QNAP documentation is woefully inadequate for getting up and running and these videos made the process _a lot_ easier.

    Just wanted to give you a big Thank You for publishing these videos. Just got a 453d and noticed the documentation is pretty scant. Its currently building the raid thanks to your help! I'll be going through the follow up videos to make sure i know how to maximize my usage! Again, Thank you!

    Future Video - setting up the QWU-100 with a 10Gbe QNAP NAS, 10Gbe router (Jetstream) and a security device like Cisco ASA 5506x and what priority to connect them to a single outgoing port modem (Schematic charting).

    I've been waiting for this release for awhile... Was desperate to move off a dangerous and failing legacy system for awhile (which sadly died taking 15tb down with it) over lockdown. Thankfully crucial data is backed up, so super keen on getting my hands on one asap and starting again proper.

    Hi,
    I have a QNAP TS-253D that I can not get in to the web interface.
    The web page prompts for username and password and then sits on the loading screen forever. What shoul I do?

    I have some questions about optimizing my first NAS setup for my needs.
    QNAP TS-673 (not the "a" version).
    I just purchased this (used) and is not yet set up.
    I have 6x 6 terabyte hard drives.
    Three of the drives are wiped clean and ready for install. Two of them have data from my previous desktop that I used as individual JBOD type setup.
    The NAS has spots for two m.2 SSDs.
    I want to be able to run my own home lab on this with Plex, a few containers, including pie hole, maybe a Minecraft server for the family, and ability to run OwnCloud for family google photos and apple drive replacement.
    I plan on upgrading the memory from the stock two gigs to at least 32 gigs and maybe 64 gigs.
    Should I buy an SSD for the drive slot number one {1ssd &5hdd}? My assumption is that will help with performance because the system will utilize that drive slot for the OS.
    Combined with that, or possibly Alternatively, what can I actually do with the m.2 slots. Is that only for drive cashing? And do I have any direct control over it or will the system utilize it as it needs and I might or might not see benefits from it?
    Or will the speeds be just fine with the WD Red HHDs?

    1. Any drive added will be formated with initial install?
    2. Can I start with 1 drive raid 0 and add drives later, months later, and change the raid configuration and not loose or have data formated from drive originally placed there from install?
    3. Can the NAS run without hard drive inside? Where is QTS software installed?

    Future video when doing Surveillance - I have 3 GoComma Smart Cameras (wifi and RJ45 connectivity) for surveillance. They have SD card slots and can back up onto the proprietor's cloud, so I assumed they could work with the surveillance software on the NAS. I run the paid version of IP Scanner on my MacBook Pro to locate IP addresses. However, none of the cameras appears on the network! Is that possible? I can access them through the App, but this does not show any IP Addresses either. Without discovering the IP Address I cannot set them up manually with Surveillance Station or QVR Pro. Is it possible for a device that uses the network not to have an IP Address?

    Checking some of the online RAID failure % calculators makes me think that RAID 5 is completely useless today, with big drives. RAID 6 seems much better. Apparently with RAID 5 there is 50% chance that rebuild will destroy all your data in a large RAID. Perhaps you could talk a bit about that?

    • @peterpaulsen2931
      @peterpaulsen2931 2 роки тому

      Why the heck should a rebuild destroy the data, let alone a 50% chance for that? I have rebuilt several RAID5 systems (partly to test it) and it never failed. If such a thing happens, the system caring for the RAID is totally crap. RAID6 is just the same as RAID5 with just a redundancy of 2 instead of only 1 drive. Now how big is the chance, that 2 drives are failing at the same time? If that's happening, 99% an external cause is killing the system, like overvoltage because of a thunderstorm. But if this happens chances are good, ALL drives are killed at once. Seriously, if I wanted to waste 2 drives as spare I'd go for a RAID5 with hot spare. Then the rebuild is done immediately without user action as fast as possible. So the RAID is redundant again as fast as possible.
      I would like to know where you have that '50% chance of data destruction due to rebuild' from?

    • @trdi
      @trdi 2 роки тому

      @@peterpaulsen2931 During the rebuild of RAID 5 you are pretty much in RAID0 configuration. If something goes wrong (or is wrong and you don't know about it), the data is gone. When the drives were small that was not such an issue. But with drives being 10TB+ the chance of critical failure is much higher. There are calculators online that let you enter size of drives and their error frequencies and it will tell you what the chance is that you will lose data during a rebuild. There is a massive difference between RAID 5 and RAID6.

    I'm getting a QNAP TS-253D and wondering if you could give me some advice on how I might best set it up for what I want to do. I will be putting in a pair of 4TB NAS drives in a RAID1 configuration. I will mainly be using it for data storage. However, I would like to be able to run up to four virtual machines (two servers and two workstations with different O/S'es). I also might want to do some things with Plex or KODI. How should I create my volume? Should I use all the available capacity, or should do like 2 or 3 TB of data storage and leave the rest available for my VM's and Plex/KODI server? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can provide.

    Think this series is the one for my music storage Plex machine. Hope to see you do a review/speed test on the TS-453D 8G soon. Though in the back of my mind an i3 processor at minimum would be the way to go. Cost doesn't bother me...hehehe maybe the TVS-672N-i3-4G upgraded to 32GB RAM, populated with a couple of SSDs in RAID 0 and auto back-up to a dedicated HDD and Google Drive is my go to? Dammit! In reality I'll be using JRiver Media Center on a dedicated PC to stream the stored FLAC files to SONOS speakers on the LAN and to Android devices outside of the LAN anyway. Lo' have mercy, decisions, decisions.

    Hi, I love the channel. Would love to know if I can set up a NAS RAID with 4 x p8TB drives (not currently in any RAID) that are 90% full and 2 x 8TB blank drives? Or do I need all new drives? Thanks a million 🙏

    • @tomashornyak6987
      @tomashornyak6987 4 роки тому +2

      if the OLD NAS is also QNAP, you should be able to swap the drives easilly into the new NAS...
      Otherwise,
      1-stick the 2 Blank drives in the new NAS, make RAID 1
      2-then copy data from the old NAS from one of the full 8TB drives to the new NAS RAID
      3-Format the Drive, stick it in the new NAS, make RAID 5 out of it
      4-repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have all drives in the new one...

      this is the link, you can check if swapping of the drives is supported from QNAP...

    Does it make sense to have an SSD in one of the bays to be used for apps, VMs, etc? Would the SSD make the nas a bit faster internally?

    Good afternoon. I've watched a lot of your videos but I am still unclear about the following: When doing link aggregation on the NAS, does ones have to do link aggregation on the switch as well? Secondly, please show the hot-swappable capability. Also, can one change the raid from 5 to 6 for example once the NAS has been set up and running?

    Next - when you enter the effin' S/N make sure it's in upper case.
    I may be sending this back

      @@alexg.7425 You could likely connect those drives to a docking station and then connect the docking station to the NAS. The NAS will recognize the drives as external drives.
