Thanks a million for making an easy to understand set of instructions. My trans went completely dead after 224 hours. After disassembling, I found a pump piston spring ($.83) had disintegrated, and it's pieces gouged out the surface of the pump. Replaced the pistons and springs and the unit, and to my amazement today, and delight, it works! JD wanted $1300. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Definately a more permanent unit, stands up to pushing snow, pulling carts, hills... etc. (i have a "Johnny Bucket" on mine, which i am shocked Taryl hasn't had given to him... rediculously helpful). Anyway, if you could do something like this for the K66, I Know many, many guys (gals?) would greatly appreciate it. I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel! I just had a problem with my transmission when I went to mow my yard for the first time yesterday. Trans seems to be skipping and surging. I will keep this video bookmarked so I can take mine apart next week. Thank you so much!!
Follow up: I took my transmission out and disassembled it with your video playing on my laptop by my work bench. I carefully took photos of it as I took it apart but I messed up BIG time when I put it back together!! I put mine back EXACTLY as you put yours together, but I DID NOT refer to my photos. I installed it and when I pushed the forward pedal, it went backwards!! Took it out, looked at my photos and saw that my transmission has the large end of the wedge shaped part opposite of yours. I reversed it and it now works perfectly. I would never had the confidence to take it apart without your video and help! By the way, my transmission is a K46BT3 and it works perfectly thanks to you!! Oh, and I also downloaded a parts breakdown from Tuff Torq by serial number and it also showed how mine was supposed to be assembled. Live and learn.
Love your videos !! I’m a Canadian Grass Rat ! All you did was perfect…….just want to add my 2 cents…..had issues with these budget transmissions losing drive when hot under load……was due to oil getting thin when hot and hydro pump losing pressure from that forward reverse orifice you mentioned losing too much oil though it, due to the thin oil. A fix we found was drawing out oil which is actually equal to 10w30…..or John Deere low viscosity hydraulic oil and replacing it with John Deere Hygard oil or even straight 30 weight oil for customers with lots of hills and pulling lawn rollers. Also I think wear on spider gears is probably due to loss of wheel traction and excessive spinning through differential, maybe a snow blade , snow blower or hilly terrain issue. Love your videos !! Take care guys !! P/ S I use a plastic shower curtain rod decorative cover….for seal installs…….comes in a 4 ft length, really cheap and is Plastic and snaps over axle, crankshaft, whatever, you just snip off in length you need !!
You inspired me to go to the local junkyard and buy a chipper shredder. Only thing I see wrong with it is the float bowl needle seal was jammed. They let it sit for 10 years. I cleaned the carb , made sure it would pop off with ether. It looks brand new, no scratches on the paint. I’m betting it I get it running mint for $20. Paid $80 for the entire unit
I no longer use a tractor with this transmission, but could have used this info when mine quit working. Not a very robust unit in my opinion.Very helpful and informative video!
The Tuff Torq K46 transmission is very common in many riding mowers. Overall, it does a good job and doesn't have many problems. Avoid heavy pulling and steep grades for longer service life. Old oil and overheating, combined with neglect and abuse is often the problem.
I have a Husqvarna with that same transmission. I have hope thanks to you that I can repair it on my own without needing to spend $700 on a new trans. Thank you so much for this indepth video! I must head to Harbor Freight and buy a magnet on a stick.
I wish Tuff would make these easier to service. I wonder why they don't have a replaceable filter from the outside and a oil drain and fill so you don't have to remove the trans. Its like they designed this so it wears out after 5-7 years.
That’s an option for some of there models. It’s the manufacture here that asks if they want it or not. They use it as a selling point to buy the higher end model with the filters and easy service.
@@FishFind3000 crazy, what tier do you need to get to before they include the drains and filters? I recently bought a commercial huskie and no drain and filter .

I try to keep the oil changed on them, even though they're a pain to remove to do it. It seems that using the 5w50 they recommend makes them work better than the 10w30 that most come factory filled with.
I used 5w50 mobil1 full synthetic. Mine seems to be happy. It’s really cold blooded in the cold though. If I just started the engine and it’s cold and at idle and let out the brake the oil in the pump can stall the right so it needs some extra rpm till it’s warm. This only happens when it’s freezing or below when the oil is extra thick.
Something sure is funny Taryl. Fellow called this morning saying his plastic transmission on his Simplicity snow blower wouldn't move. I said John Deere makes one like that(your video D110). Anyway I think my phone heard me talking and what do you know, brought me here to this video! What a coincidence?
I think these transmissions would benefit greatly from a external spin on filter. I can’t get over how dirty these transmissions get inside. Great video Taryl, thanks!

really appreciate the Tuff Torq transmission videos , allot of us have this transition and most are going to fail at some point , i hear after 300 hrs. they begin to act up 👍
I got a LA135 and D125, got 1500hrs out of trans before it started slipping, never serviced either lol. And I tow a 350 litre spray trailer with them, tow a 6x4 trailer often with 200kg plus weight on it. I think their tough asf. I just rebuilt them thanks to Taryls videos
I have had great luck using your excellent videos for the K46 trans. Thank you very much for your vids. Now I have a customer with a K62 trans out of a JD 190 C that has me scratching my head?? It is a 20 year old mower but she has kept it in immaculate shape. There isn't even a tear in the seat and it fires up like a new engine. No more parts available from Tuff Torq. It seems a shame to trash a perfectly good mower over a worn out trans.
Rebuilding transmissions? Ever think about rebuilding a 4r70w or 4r100 Ford transmission? As always good explanation of what you're doing with competenence and comedy to keep us interested. Like a good homily!
Thanks for the education. I normally do not go for the old act stupid hick comedy but you let it slip at times that you are a wise man that knows what he is doing. You are thinking about what you are working on so much that at times you sound like a shop class teacher with all the education. Anyway, thanks for your honest teaching. You are not just fooling around. I have an old JD LT155 that would get hot and barely move. A good internal cleaning and fresh 20W50 synthetic oil got it back to work.
I learned a lot about the insides of a mower transmission from this! Even though my mowers are all working now, I am still thankful for the video. At the end, you both appeared to be in front of your green screen, even though you were 3D outside
Great video. I had the same issue, but after everything on the inside looked clean and no scoring, it had to be something else, and I found it. Crap had built up under the left pedal. Cleaned the linkage and lubed, changed fluid with 5w50 synthetic and it runs great.
Hello there, great videos. I thought adding a fine mesh screen on top of the grid screen on your stand would save from fishing out any tiny parts from the oil tub. Always learning when watching, at what hour rating do you suggest a trans service? 50 hrs? Cheers.
Thank you for the excellent presentation.very helpful. Depressing that the trans isnt designed for easy preventative maintenance. Clean oil and filter would change the trans life dramatically. Thank you Tara Dactle 👍👍 C. Diesel in New Hampshire
Fecal fingers??? Thanks Taryl, I just sat down to supper and almost choked on my supper when I heard you say that. I almost launched it across my dining room!! You're a funny guy! ( movie quite.)
just think of all the extra oil that would have stayed in the transmission if you hadn't pulled the pump assembly off....just goes to show how thorough a cleaning these things need to get rid of all the contaminated/metal laden oil
Question - I have the T40 trans. I have it all apart as you do. I have the pin in place as you do. I have small ball and I am not sure where that goes? Would you advise the location for it. The bearings are not missing a ball. I re -checked.
How old is the Tuff Torq transmission design? we have an OLD mower with hydrostatic that we used to use with a snow blower. We found that after a while using in the northern Minnesota cold, it would lose drive power. Letting it sit a while would get it working again for a while. At the time we thought maybe the oil was foaming as it got warmed up. Perhaps it was a plugged filter instead?
Taylor, not a comment but, a question. I just had the pumps rebuilt in my K-46 transmission. It moved real for about mowing approximately 3 acres then it started skipping, not moving either direction. Can you give me any ideas on what to do to it now? Thanks in advance. Your videos are awesome.
But when you checked the differential gears, and other parts, they all seemed ok. So what was causing all of the metal debris on the differential magnet, and the filter? I understand how cleaning everything will improve performance but what caused the initial problem of the plugged filter?
I have a 38 inch cut WHITE riding lawnmower a few weeks ago the front drive belt whore out. I replaced the belt and since I changed the belt the lawnmower jerks a lot only in forward gears. My machine has 2 drive belts I replaced the back belt last summer. There was a small C clip that fell down onto the deck the front drive belt. What should I do?
K-66 is a great transaxle. Comes with multiple options... in my case it powers a serious power steering. I think that's the sweet spot for light duty machines ~
Do you have to bleed air out of the unit after overhauling it? Turn the axles after first fill? I recommend a larger and higher table with a covered trash hole at one end. ¼ round border to keep the little stuff from rolling off.
From what I remember a lot of the John Deere Tuff Torque K46 hydrostatic transmissions were INCORRECTLY FILLED with generic 10w30 SAE Motor oil due to a mixup of recording the Tuff Torque TL-200 requirements data sheet (restrictions on shipping if they had been properly filled before leaving Tuff Torque factory for final install at John Deere factory so it was most cost effective to fill them right before sale) which was what happened. However the K46 isn’t exactly built for ease of oil changes and customers of John Deere tractors quickly were encountering loss of power, start and stopping/surging all from accelerated wear in the hydrostatic pump and motors. Forgot which models or years it applies to but if the magnets aren’t completely clogged with powdered friction gears material you can usually just drain the oil out run a little 5w50 full synthetic to flush and top off with the same fluid. In most cases of drop in power, slippage or surging the replacement to correct oil will resolve things
Taryl, I am about to rebuild my K46. I put the specific S/N number into Tuff Torq's database. . . .they no longer make parts for that particular variation. Can I just tear it open and cross-check parts from another variation - buy replacements for a variation they still make?
That one is older. It has the steel wheel spacers on the axles. Newer uses plastic. I think the rear wheels being spaced and shimmed loose may contribute to the spider gear failure. The axle c-clip deal isn't select or shim fit and the axle and spiders have a bunch of movement normally that's probably aggravated if the wheels aren't shimmed right. Just a theory after having worked on two k46.
I had trouble with the tuff torg k46 and entered it blind but will say when I installed it it worked like it should other then that little pin you showed must of fallen out because I can't disengage the transmission. Thanks for the video. The next tuff torq transmission I open I will known what to expect
Taryl THANK YOU man I did ur step by step except instead of buying the pump i used 600 grit sand paper and a true flat surface my pump was grooved slightly so it would slow waaayyyy down when warmed up... GUESS WHAT ITS FIXED!!!! SO THERES UR DINNER!!!!!
That would greatly depend on the cost of labor. By me, 90-110$ / hour- it isn't cost effective to do what was done here. Most DIY guys are better to replace the unit.
Question The transmission that the gears where destroyed the filter wasn’t that dirty, but the other with the filter that was dirty that was full of metal on filter and magnets, where did the metal come from? Agree looked clean once pulled apart unless someone used old transmission oil in it to refill etc, well can only be the only explanation I could figure.
@@robwright4398 no it was dirty, remember the magnets has shavings too, that’s why I’m trying to figure out where the damage came from. The filter on the one he had earlier with all damaged gears was cleaner.
Hi Taryl...what happnd to the right hand glove? Are we trying to be Michael Jackson? LOL GREAT JOB as usual. We really learn alot from watching you and the othr utube channels about small& medium sized engines.
I'm not Taryl. There are shift fingers that go inside the gear stack. They grab the inside of the gear and slid back and forth to engage different gears. The tips wear down and won't grab the gear very good and will skip when moving.
I love how they kept asking "could ya send us a picture?" just shows that engineers don't think things through fully. Also just makes me shake my head that they don't understand their own products if they need a photo of their own products..... Don't they have blueprints??

Great video. I had the same issue, but after everything on the inside looked clean and no scoring, it had to be something else, and I found it. Crap had built up under the left pedal. Cleaned the linkage and lubed, changed fluid with 5w50 synthetic and it runs great.
Hello there, great videos. I thought adding a fine mesh screen on top of the grid screen on your stand would save from fishing out any tiny parts from the oil tub. Always learning when watching, at what hour rating do you suggest a trans service? 50 hrs? Cheers.
Very good video as always, can't wait for the fuel additive experiment to see if they start after storing.
Is magnet on a stick any relation to José Jalapeño on a Stick?
😂
Grabbing your hand after Skippy said he didn't remember washing his hands really made me laugh out loud.
( movie quite.)
just think of all the extra oil that would have stayed in the transmission if you hadn't pulled the pump assembly off....just goes to show how thorough a cleaning these things need to get rid of all the contaminated/metal laden oil
by far the best instruction video. Great thank you.
I always learn something from your videos while being entertained. Keep it up.
Fantastic video, and all the people make me watching and learning at the same time❤️👀👍
Question - I have the T40 trans. I have it all apart as you do. I have the pin in place as you do. I have small ball and I am not sure where that goes? Would you advise the location for it. The bearings are not missing a ball. I re -checked.
You guys have my sense of humor, love it….
The 4 sided diamond honing block from harbor freight, worked really well for sanding the pistons.
Is it cost effective to rebuild tranny versus remove old and install new tranny ?
Do you do bench rebuilds for an L130 and if so, where is you located at?
Excellent video on this transaxle. Couldn't ask for better! Perfect! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Making me wonder about the cost differential between rebuilding a K46 and upgrading to a K57 or a K66.
That’s what I’ve been thinking about when mine dies. The beefed up trans would be handy when I’m moving my 5x8 trailer around.
What brand of oil extractor are you using?
What about the Peerless 915 12B jerking in the middle gears?
I have rear end on johndeere, that when engaged the axle still turns freely, just like it was disengaged?
Thank You man i been having problems with my john deere LA130 hydro trans NOW I KNOW HOW TO REPAIR IT!!!!!!! Great video
I have seen people use a drill to operate the pump/motor after repair to fill all passages, then top off fluid. What do you think?
Taryl, I am about to rebuild my K46. I put the specific S/N number into Tuff Torq's database. . . .they no longer make parts for that particular variation.
Can I just tear it open and cross-check parts from another variation - buy replacements for a variation they still make?
We need more conscientious workers like you who care
That one is older. It has the steel wheel spacers on the axles. Newer uses plastic. I think the rear wheels being spaced and shimmed loose may contribute to the spider gear failure. The axle c-clip deal isn't select or shim fit and the axle and spiders have a bunch of movement normally that's probably aggravated if the wheels aren't shimmed right. Just a theory after having worked on two k46.
yes, this is a fun, learning Chanel, thanks, thank you very much !!
I had trouble with the tuff torg k46 and entered it blind but will say when I installed it it worked like it should other then that little pin you showed must of fallen out because I can't disengage the transmission. Thanks for the video. The next tuff torq transmission I open I will known what to expect
Thank you! Your advice was helpful! Greetings from Latvia!
That seemed like a pretty involved repair. Wonder what would be the cost of this repair.
I wish Taryl would give estimates on some of these. Be easier to decide, do I do t myself or do I take it in.
That would greatly depend on the cost of labor. By me, 90-110$ / hour- it isn't cost effective to do what was done here. Most DIY guys are better to replace the unit.
Hi..any chance of a video explaining how to increase the top speed on this gear box... grateful, fantastic job
And also not to mentions the sound effects definitely very funny 😄 😆 🤣 😂 awesome video there keep up the good work there 👏 👍 😀
Question
The transmission that the gears where destroyed the filter wasn’t that dirty, but the other with the filter that was dirty that was full of metal on filter and magnets, where did the metal come from?
Agree looked clean once pulled apart unless someone used old transmission oil in it to refill etc, well can only be the only explanation I could figure.
I think he cleaned that filter just to get a better look at it, to see if it had shavings in it
@@robwright4398 no it was dirty, remember the magnets has shavings too, that’s why I’m trying to figure out where the damage came from.
The filter on the one he had earlier with all damaged gears was cleaner.
In the sixties , musicians were rockstars .
Now a mechanic from Podunk is the Messiah of Mower repairs .
really well designed , good engineering and as usual great video Taryl .............
well done taryl. you make a fine teacher.
Hi Taryl...what happnd to the right hand glove? Are we trying to be Michael Jackson? LOL
GREAT JOB as usual. We really learn alot from watching you and the othr utube channels about small& medium sized engines.
Hey Taryl dose "Not so Tuff-torque" sell Rebuilt or Exchange used transaxle's?
Hey Taryl I have a 5 speed castlegsrden ride on 2011 manual change its jerks to what could be wrong
I'm not Taryl. There are shift fingers that go inside the gear stack. They grab the inside of the gear and slid back and forth to engage different gears. The tips wear down and won't grab the gear very good and will skip when moving.
Great job doing the transmission repairs 👍
You and the other people are hilarious...great job showing how to fix things...
Weak Torq is more like it. My 1966 Sears and 1980's Wheel Horse trans are still going strong and all original. 10,000 hours and flawless
If I didn't have the transmission apart can I drill a couple holes in the seal put a couple self tappers in and pull on those to remove the seal
I love how they kept asking "could ya send us a picture?" just shows that engineers don't think things through fully. Also just makes me shake my head that they don't understand their own products if they need a photo of their own products..... Don't they have blueprints??
Agreed. Kind of embarrassing ...
That is a different sump plate?it doesnt have the raised points where the big round filter goes I noticed, great video
What are the case bolts torqued to?
Great hack to use the speedwrench. Thanks, Taryl. Always great info coming from your shop.
This is a fun channel! Not like some of those other no fun channel's. Nice video!
Thanks Taryl. Very good explanation. I really enjoyed this video.
You make the most entertaining videos especially those voices
