Imagine being able to say that you had supporting roles in Singin In The Rain, West Side Story and The King And I, and won an Oscar , Emmy, Tony and Grammy. as Moreno acknowledges, despite winning the Academy Award for West Side Story, she got no career momentum from it and didn't work in films again until the Brando film in 1969.

Why did she feel so jealous and "threatened"? She's always been a beautiful woman, as well as unbelievably talented. She's still beautiful today at 88, and she's one of just 15 people who have the distinction of being called an EGOT for earning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, the ultimate Hollywood achievement!!
The dance at the gym is one of my fave numbers. Rita doesn't realise her importance here.
I like Rita Moreno in the work that she has done but I think to have thrown shade at Natalie was totally uncalled for. And the truth be told she was a star in splendor in the grass which was not an easy role to play and neither was Judy in Rebel Without a Cause and she was also a child actress. Still I respect and admire Rita Moreno and her contribution to cinema and television. I just take exception with what she said about Natalie.

Rita Moreno wasn’t jealous of the basic white woman. People of color have to work twice has hard while Natalie was just another white woman who took a role that belong to a POC.
I don't agree with her about the dance at the gym. I thought that was one of the best parts of the movie.
The gym scene was awesome.
Her comment that "Natalie was not a Star" shows her jealous pettiness & she treated Natalie with disrespect, but Jerome Robins stepped in & isolated Natalie from the other cast!!
Natalie isolated herself! Natalie should had never play Maria she never try to understand the culture. Another white woman appropriating a culture that doesn’t belong to her.
But natalie was ignoring his male costar just for a tantrum , because he wanted someone he nows like Warren beatty , like she was thinking she was the producer of the movie or something, ladies you got the role calm down.and i am a fan of natalie but that disapont me

Rita Morano has a massive ego. Rita did not get hired for 7 years after West Side Story, and did not work. Rita was very jealous of Natalie Wood, who played Maria, and Natalie did a great acting job. Rita criticized Natalie. Natalie was a Star at the time. 🌟 The dance Mambo sequence was outstanding. Rita was full of crap.

Rita didn’t work because she refused to do so. She didn’t want to play racist roles. She was upset with Natalie because another white woman took a role that was meant for a POC and didn’t try to understand the Puerto Rican culture instead kept her distance from the entire cast. Rita had two work twice has hard and be three times more talented than Natalie wood

well, she admits that she was (is) jealous of pretty actress (i.e Natalie wood!). strange that she couldn't cash on her success in west side story
@Vivian de FariaMay also have been referring to the "Natalie was not a star" bit (which she's repeated over the years)when she most certainly was at the time; the main reason she was cast over, say,Carol Lawrence, was her box office marketability - fair or not. Its natural that Rita(an authentic Puerto Rican) would have side-eyed at Natalie being cast in the lead; a Caucasian whose singing was dubbed.It also wouldn't surprise me if she saw this as an example of a privileged former child star being handed something without having to struggle for it, although we now know Natalie's life was far from idyllic at the time. I LOVE both actresses/stars/legends, but I wish that RM wouldn't snipe so much at Natalie during WSS interviews, especially considering that she's not alive to clap back or anything
@@jamestyler7697 I lived in LA a while back and got an opportunity to meet several of the actors/dancers who portrayed Jets and Sharks in the film. During one conversation I was told they are deeply embarrassed by Moreno's endless criticism of Natalie. They also find it cruel under the circumstances. Apparently everyone else in the cast was impressed with her professionalism, and feel her performance as Maria adds immeasurably to the film's quality and stature.

Sure Debbie Reynolds did good in "Singing in the Rain" dancing even though she couldn't really dance, but they had to work with her for months to get it down. A well seasoned dancer would get it in a week or two. A studio would much rather have the later if possible.

You do realize, don't you, that this is in *1961* dollars? If you put 5 dollars into an inflation calculator, in 2018 dollars, it equals 40 dollars.
