You should probably install some sort of chain wash to spray the chain as it comes back into the locker to try and keep as much mud out of the locker as you can
well done
paint the exposed wood core with epoxy when you cut holes in the deck, if you have a leak your deck might not rot.
Also pays to drill out the screw holes larger than needed, fill with thickened epoxy then screw into the epoxy, that way the wood core is again protected from the inevitable leak that comes with time and exposure.
yes,, otherwise one day the whole deck will be rotten ,, that stinks. Great project !!
Stars and Stripes blue we just painted our 55ft trawler that color and love it
The color seems more of a Florida color. Maybe a midnight blue or something. Either way, the boat is looking good. 👍
All hearts!!!!!
That came up really nice 👍👍🙏🇬🇧
Definitely get that windlass serviced when you can. If you drop the pick and need to get the chain up in an emergency it may cost you. Also. I doubt you could pull the chain up by hand anyway. Also new chain asap. Check all the fittings.
Just a safety tip.
You guys are doing a bloody fantastic job. Well done crew
Great Content!
I know this is not important butt I'll say it anyway for your future looks of the boat. As I saw your install of the foot switches for the windless I noticed they are scuwed at an angle. I think by putting the rubber hinge paralel with the curve of the hull it will have a nice flow to the install.
As you do all these repaires when you look bake on things you took so much time and energy to do you will see a better quality of your own work.
I'm watching you, lol
I just found your channel. Now it’s 2:00 am and still watching. I go from 1 episode to the next! Keep up the good work.
Hiya guys I've just came across your channel tonight,I'm a sailor who enjoys watching ppl find a old boat and watch them turn trash into treasure...I've just watched all your videos in a row and from the first episode I new it was a journey I have to follow...I don't really follow anything but sailboat channels but I just so loved watching you guys.what makes your channel stand out from the thousands of other out there is you are both genuine and not like so many other channels that are so fake..you can follow any channel and just see that ppl are just so full of themselves..you guys have also been very professional in your projects with the boat and have tackled each issue as you should... I'm going to follow your journey always and I'm pretty sure that one day I'll be watching you fix up a yatch and travel this beautiful world by ocean.. keep doing what you are doing and remember what your dreams are together and you guys will have a beautiful life together...oh and just so you know I'm watching your channel from Rockingham which is a sea side town in the city of Perth in Western Australia...down under...lol... you should be proud of what your doing and your recheahing all parts of the world... you go guys and stay true..😁🍺👍⛵⚓
Thanks so much Peter, your words of encouragement mean a lot! We will someday get a sailboat to travel more globally, I hope you stick with us!
Showed up in my recommendations last night when I had insomnia and I watched all the episodes. You are a lovely couple and make a great team. Keep working hard and pushing forward! You will be rewarded with a super boat. Look forward to the next one 👍
I was gonna do my 34' uniflite hull in a dark blue, but the guys in the yard said white is the way to go because it will last way longer. Looks good white, and I'm happy with it.
One vote for white, thanks!
Started binging this morning and greatly enjoy the content, your personalities and the very high-quality filming and editing. This is first-rate storytelling.
Guys you need to use 3M 5200 glue to seal anything lithe the covers for the windless and stuff that is in the outside areas of the boat. It be a seal that will last forever. Don’t go no where with out having 3M 5200 on board at all times!

I have a 1979 Uniflite Convertible 40 that I've been slowly updating for the past 6 years. It's hard to beat a Uniflite hull! I painted my hull a flag blue with awlgrip paint. Tough stuff! I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos! Keep it up!
Don't believe Uniflite made 40' convertible.
@@juniinc40 it's a 38 with a 2 ft factory installed swim platform/fish hold. If I could post a picture I would
@@phlip2173
I know 38s well...nice boats❗
A few Uniflite models with timeless broken sheer line like 42 & 48s.
It's your boat and the progress is amazing. Paint it what ever color you want.
Check out the colour of sailing dauntless episode 66 ish. They have a very pretty pale colour blue green with a black stripe. Looks awesome and breaks up the white without too much brazen colour you might like their blog and he is a big help on boats and is doing some blogs on boat issues. Enjoy.
We'll take a look, thanks for letting us know
There's a channel called "Born again Boating", he uses a rust remover that works great. Look him up, he's really good at boat restoration and maintenance in general. Great channel, btw!
Saw a boat from another channel (Odd Life Crafting) that was orange and white... looks nice.
Just looked them up, that does look nice!
Just found y'all's channel, we too are redoing a boat like yours and love this! Watched all the videos so far. Can't wait for the next one! As far as the color, I think it's a personal choice, so why not. Paint it whatever color y'all like 👍
Another Binge watcher. Great viewing . You both have a lot of patience and attention to detail. Keep "em coming
I legit check youtube every single day just to make sure i havent missed an episode, i cant wait to see the final result, keep it up! 😁
only recently found this channel and binge watched all of them love the content.
Same! 😂
Re did my hull in 2 pak platinum silver , get lots of comments and how good it looks and it is so easy to keep clean and maintain
Thanks for sharing, might be an option for us as well.
Invest in a hole saw kit that attaches to you drill makes making perfect holes alot easier
A hole saw kit is definitely on our list, thanks.
A dark blue hull, with a red trim line, would be cool especially with white, for me that just says Nautica.. LOL It's your boat, paint it any color you want. Cheers!
Love your vids, especially the engine start ups etc. Once things get caught up, I'd recommend a thorough degrease of the engine bilge and engines and then a repaint of the actual bilge areas (white) and the engines themselves (back to factory color). But then again, I'm one of those folks who is OCD about my bilges and engines.
We will definitely be doing more engine room detail and painting, stay tuned for future videos!
There are actually people who aren’t? Lol
If you paint the boat, use a spray gun don't roll and tip it. Any time you drill a hole in the deck, seal the exposed wood with resin so water can't infiltrate your deck and cause the core to rot when the butyl tape fails, it will save you trouble later on.
Thanks for the advice, we were thinking we were going to roll and tip, not so sure about that now.
It may be too late, but, keep the hull a light color, maybe a shade of white, in order to have a good contrast with the topsides.
We haven't painted yet and it seems like most people are telling us to stick with white. We're thinking maybe a blue boot stripe instead but haven't decided yet, thanks for the feedback.
What an amazing series! Well produced and filmed! I love this!
Impressive work! About the color: maybe keep the white / gray / black theme? Then it matches with the interior ⚒👍
Just found you two and binged also :) ... loved the blog you two are doing a great job one the boat and the filming !! .. hope you continue 🛥🥂
Great video guys, I have binge watched from the beginning, I've been looking for something like this for a while, but I didn't think I would find a motor yacht channel with such an "Exceptionally Beautiful Lady" helping out with most of the projects, yes colour your hull as you wish, it's your choice, personally I would Love a boat like yours painted like the Island Packet sail boats, "Dark Green & Gold" with the white upper sections, all the very best from Aus, Al
Brings back memories I remember going through this with windlass. Seafoam bottom paint would be cool. Don't paint the hull/deck. Wetsand, compound, wax! Shell come back to life.
Unfortunately the topsides had been painted before so we don't think we can get gelcoat back to looking good
@@SeekingSeas ah man that sucks! I wonder what they painted it with? Emron paint is the best for a boat but it's very expensive and I think it's outlawed in most states is very toxic. But it looks great lol
Hiya guys I've just read your reply and it really is so nice to hear from you both...I was just reading some of the comments that you have received from ppl all over the world and I was very happy to see that what I wrote and thought about your channel was also exactly what so many other people thought too..the two of you should know that... just keep on being who you are and you will find in time your channel will grow..real ppl will always follow you guys..great job, stay safe and I will be excited to see everything that you two do...⚓⛵👍😁🇦🇺
I've just found your channel and watched all of your videos in one sitting ! Love them, and love the chilled out way you both tackle all the jobs !! Between the both of you , you have some great knowledge and skills. I can't wait for the next one. Infact watching this one where you've re done the windlass , I actually wanted to be there helping , not that you need it.
Have a great day , and thanks for sharing your journey
Thank you! We're happy to have you following along on the journey!
I think the boat looks great white. Teal would be unique but would not look classy. If you want color then consider dark blue. Great job repairing the switches!
Watched all the videos the last two days, you guys are killing it! My videos definitely don't get this kind of traffic lol love watching the rebuild series, can't wait to see future videos!
I like your choice of colors for the boat.
I’m saying this while you only have around 6,500 subscribers your channel is great and will blow up for sure. I’m excited to watch the journey from the beginning. Maybe y’all can do a video explaining your future plans/destinations.
We're planning on making a video like that in a couple weeks, stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
Awlgrip makes a beautiful light blue that would look fantastic on your boat. The two of you can roll and tip it. As always preparation is the biggest part of the job but I'm sure you will knock it out with no problem. Light colors hold up best as well as being safer for visibility. 😊
Great idea, we'll look into Awlgrip, thank you.
The Colors will be great! I have seen colors on boats that many will cringe at before the color is applied, but once the painting is finished, the boat looks great.
I hope so!
I love all your videos you guys work well together keep them coming
Thank you! Will do!
I dont know a lot about how much it would cost to repaint but i do know that a lot of people are doing wraps now days and they are supposed to be cheaper then painting but you would have to look into it more. A darker teal would be pretty beautiful as well. As for the top maybe look into boat mats they are adhesive rubber mats that can be installed professionally and they help with limiting slipping and also make the deck less likely to burn ur feet on a hot day.
Great idea, we are looking into that. Raptor decking was one company. If you know of others, please let us know.
Dark Blue.
I've painted allot of boats, done what you have for years. My opinion is paint the boot stripe not the hull sea foam green. It will like fade out but more importantly gelcoat and original prep will last longer and keep the boat more valuable
If your boat’s hull has not been painted in the past and it is still gelcoat you guys should really consider just buffing out the gelcoat on the hull. If the gelcoat is anything like my Chris Craft you will be very surprised and pleased on how nice it comes back to its original shine. Your boat probably has gelcoat at least twice as thick as some of the newer boats out there nowadays and it is possible to bring the shine back with some elbow grease and effort. I would agree on painting the upper deck since it is probably in a lot worse shape from the direct sun beating down on it and being walked on all these years.
Unfortunately it's been painted. We thought about trying to strip it but not sure how that would turn out. Thanks for the input.
Some boats have been painted many different colors. One boat my dad first had was once a navy shuttle. If you can imagine how many coats of paint were on the bottom of that boat, it was scary gray and thick. Removal down to the wood was a major labor of love involving my mom and dad, with my two older brothers and me. In the end, after some rot repair the boat bottom looked great, too bad it was under water. We did the same with the sides but painted them white, and all the teak topsides were cleaned and revarnished.
Dang good job on that anchor winch!!! I believe you should paint the boat the color you like, I have to say I love that color though!
Just got done binge watching all your videos good job. As far as the color of the hull goes it's up to Ya'll. I had two boats of color, never again fades unevenly around the boat. I stay with white exclusively now. But I do live in Florida we get a lot of sun so it might not be a problem in Washington.
Love the channel guys, I would suggest you seal the timber where you put the windlass foot switches to stop the wood from rotting, in regards to paint choose your colour it will be good
Marine 31 fiberglass restoration kit including the Flex orbital polisher.
You guys rock. Good job on the windlass. I love the sea foam idea. My boat is black. Never again. My next one will be sea foam. Good luck!
I always think that Sailboats with the Royal/Navy Blue gel looks amazing.
I always liked those myself, one vote for blue
I just found your channel, probably because I subscribe to a lot of boating DIY themed channels. You're doing a nice job of telling your story and your projects are interesting. Good work. I haven't noticed you using any cordless tools, they are ideal for working on a boat. A good impact driver, drill, recip-saw, and multi tool will really up your game especially while doing "boat yoga" in those award hard to get to places you're going to be in. Just my thoughts. Keep up the good work.
Your absolutely right, we probably should invest in more cordless tools. Thanks for watching.
Oxiclean is excellent for removing organic dirt.
Great advice, we'll see about getting some oxiclean.
Binged all your videos. I love the way y'all work together. THe boat is coming along nicely. Can you do a video that breaks down the cost for everything you have done?
Sure! We have been trying to keep track of all the expenses, we'll have a video in the future going through it :)
Love the vid I think you should name the boating seeking serenity lovely name
Just came across yalls channel today, went ahead and watched all the episodes and subscribed. I'm hoping to redo an older boat myself. Good content and the videos are a good length. 👍
The expansion plug is a good stopgap, but when you get a chance, have someone weld a bung on in it's place that you can fit a proper plug into. That expansion plug will end up leaking as the rubber gets worn or cut by the metal of the housing. I like the idea of a Sea Green hull.
Thanks for the advice, we were looking for a more permanent solution.
As a former merchant marine I have laid down a lot of paint on ships. My advice on the exterior go with a marine epoxy paint. It expensive but lasts a whole lot longer. Neutralize all rust before you paint with ospho. Then when it comes back spray it down with some watered down osph to kill the running rust till its time to repaint.
your'e going to hate that windlass when you are in deep water. It takes forever to get the anchor to the bottom. We have something similar and by the time we set the anchor, the boat has drifted 50 yards from where we wanted to be. Mostly an issue when fishing, but we plan on upgrading our windlass in the future.
You guys really need to cover all of that exposed core at those foot switches with expoxy or similar to stop the foredeck going soft. Most common source of deck rot is anchor foot switches…
Yep, your absolutely right.
@@SeekingSeas but ps I love your channel.. it’s like deja vu with jobs on your boat like ours.
By cover the core he means that you have to remove those switches, remove the balsa core for about 1” and then fill the area where it was with a thickened epoxy filler. Then re-drill the mounting screw holes into that filler. This MUST be done or 100% guarantee that you will let water into the core of the deck which is going to lead to a repair that will cost more than the boat in a few years. Google around for “decoring balsa core”. Easy to do with an Allen wrench in a cordless drill. I have used butyl for years and moved on to bedding deck items in UV rated 3M 4200 caulk. The butyl will run out in the heat and you will always be cleaning it off… Not yelling lol but want to be sure you don’t create a problem long term here. I have in the past and it was no fun!
white paint over white paint hides lots of sin , blue paint over white paint and a lot of sin will show through in short time..my .02 cents Well this afternoon I have binge watched all of your work so far keep them coming.
Thanks for your suggestions!!
Hi
Just subscribed to you. you two are doing a great job
Steve all the way from England UK
Hi guys I really love your channel . I just saw the music video from Luke Combs - when it rains it pours and since you asked for a color theme for your boat I think the boat in the video is just how you want it and should do it. Greetings from Germany.
We'll have to checkout that video, thanks for sharing.
Great video , what a great restoration and so much money saved well done both of you 👍
How do you stop the water going down the chain hole into the cabin below. Fab job by the way 👍👍
There's a chain locker under neath there that is isolated from the cabin, there's a hole on the hull in the starboard side that allows water from the chain locker to drain. If that hole got plugged for some reason and water filled up the chain locker we would have a problem. We're looking into solutions to prevent or at least limit water going down the chain hole.
I have seen some boat owners decide to use a wrap on their hull as opposed to painting. It’s like putting wrap on a car. Obviously for just the hull above the water line. Much cheaper than paint. The main downside is that it doesn’t stand up well to abrasion such as rubbing up against a dock or piling. However, you can always replace any damaged areas by cutting in a patch. Also, I couldn’t tell if your deck has a wood core. If it does, you would be well served by pulling out your foot switches and sealing the wood core with some epoxy and reinstalling your foot switches. This will help close out your core and help minimize any moisture migration through the wood which can lead to a rotten deck core. Love your channel. You guys are doing great. Keep up the good work.
We have been getting a lot of messages directing us to wrapping the boat. We think its a great idea and are looking into pricing as we speak. We do have a wood core and will seal it up with epoxy, thank you.
to do the hull is touchy with but look at parly revivle he know his stuff on glass boats
the paint is key and costly and needs to be sanded all to be painted to work , i have done a few hulls myself
First! just had to... I think blue will look fantastic, and while the boat is out of the water you have an opportunity to install or upgrade any sort of depth/fish finder or sonar. Very excited to see your progress!
Alright, a vote for blue! We are planning to remove any unnecessary through-hull sensors that previous owners decided to keep adding. Instead of removing one to replace one, we must have at least eight in the bottom of this thing, not good.
@@SeekingSeas there are through hull blanks you can get at west marine. May be a less spendy option than glass patching the hull in the unwanted spots.
Sounds like a good option, we'll look into it!
Really enjoying your videos so far, Mammoth job! Just a suggestion, perhaps consider using rust converter (phosphoric acid) before painting rusty steel? Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching, we typically use Ospho first before painting. Works great.
Just found your channel and started bingeing. My uncle has a uniflite up near you. Similar model. One thing you may want to look at is: OSPHO-Rust Converter/Metal Primer. West Marine carries it. Works like a champ but you dont want to inhale it so wear a mask. That anchor looks like its missing the steel lead and safety clip btw.
We've actually recently used OSPHO in the engine room, and it will be in a future video, works great! Thanks for the suggestion on the safety clip, we'll be sure to get that attached before our next trip.
Paint what ever you want its your boat
Yea! something other than a cat! Funn voyage so far .. make more vids!! I vote for red
OK I've caught up, well done guys, she is really looking good, btw lucky break with the windless, they not cheap to replace.
We have gotten mostly lucky with the boat, very grateful for that 🤞
I just found your channel - love your tenacity and progress.
Instead of painting the outside, perhaps you can add some vinyl stripes/striping. It will be easy to replace if you get tired of the color. Also, what ever you decide to do on the outside, carry it inside the boat (even if it is subtle).
Keep up the great work and enjoy!
Thanks for the support, we will look into vinyl wrapping.
As a professional boat builder I don’t suggest to paint it any dark colors like blue or even gray. They fade over the months and you will need to buffing it every now and then. Total white for the Winn or off white otherwise get prepared for very hard work or make on of us more economically happy 😃!!!
Ooh and the colour, yes I'd say that's a good choice ( if you look at Bianchi cycles they have a lovely colour of blue, but I'm not sure if it's the same you have in mind ?)
I do like all white , but I'm certain that you'll smash the paint work in whatever colour you choose 🙂🙂
If you are doing the exterior finish then do it in Gel Coat instead of Paint. Bit more expensive but it will be worth it in the long term.
It was previously painted, not sure if we can gelcoat over that or would have to strip it completely.
Wow - that seems to be your lucky find, even it was a lot of work.
All the windlasses I was repairing (on sailboats) were totally rotten, no chance to repair. That always got expansive.
We have definitely had some luck in terms of things being broken. Still a lot of work, but we're slowly getting it back in shape.
@@SeekingSeas I adore your energy!
take a look at navy blue hull with white top...its sharp
Well I would vote for a light grey hull color with a white top, but it's your boat and your choice. Another option would be to vinyl wrap the hull and pain the top sides. Thus would allow you to more economically change or repair any damages versus painting. I am sure you can find some youtube videos on the subject out there to get some ideas.
Thanks, light grey would be nice!
@@SeekingSeas That colourscheme got my vote, too.
As far as painting the hull have you thought about a vinyl wrap? Less expensive, and from what I understand can last up to 10-years.
We will look into wrapping, might be the way to go.
Seafoam and white sound bad a$$
Can I recommend Flitz for your cleaning needs.
Every Navy Blue hull I have ever seen looks so sharp(sexy). So I would encourage you to choose that color. But another choice would be Nordhavn color. 😉 So, it looks like your Bimini is black. Maybe choose Royal Blue instead of Navy. 😋
Not familiar with Nordhavn, we'll look into that, thank you.
@@SeekingSeas the color that Nordhavn uses the most is a cross between a beige and a pale green. I’ve never seen it in person, so I am not sure exactly what color it is. But it looks nice. If you check out the Aboard Mermaid Monster channel, their boat is that color.
Just in case, secure the anchor to the boat with a line that has, perhaps, a chain hook.
Thanks Captain, that's on our list of things to do.
Personally I prefer all white, but it's your boat.
Looks like white is winning out. Maybe we'll do a blue boot stripe.
Is there a Cover for the Chain Return into the storage of chain when your under way in Rough seas. I am sure it has a drain inside ? But in rough seas it could be like a fire house into the hull?
There is no cover, it does have a drain but your right there could be a lot of water coming in. Our plan is to try out a grommet of some sort, just don't know how well it would hold up to chain sliding through it all the time.
Also you need to add a steel cable and clip as the safety backup incase to windless let's go while you're underway. That would be disastrous. I'm sure someone removed it and never put it back. I think west marine stocks them.
Thanks! We'll be sure to get the safety clip attached before we need to use the anchor.
Just found your channel and I love it! PLEASE DONT paint the hull aqua color or any color other than white. You have a beautiful boat….leave it white. I promise you will be glad you did.
Thanks for the suggestion, we're now learning more towards keeping it white or doing a vinyl wrap after reading everyones comments.
Like the idea of blue, how about the aqua blue as a band and then a darker blue for the hull with the white top? Regardless I think it will look sharp!
Seal that balsa core in your deck(where the foot switches are) with epoxy or it will rot in a heart beat. Looks like PA,WA.
Yep, we'll get it sealed up good. PA is correct.
I'd rewire the buttons so that the arrows show the way the chain goes. That would be more intuitive imho. :)
I believe that's how we have it setup.
@@SeekingSeas I may be mistaken, but it seemed to me that the left button (with the arrow pointing back) made the chain go frontwards (unwind). I like your content, please don't take what I say the wrong way. If I'm mistaken, I'm sorry. :)
Oh I see what you mean. Currently we have it where the arrow points toward the direction the chain will go once pressed relative to where we are standing, but I could see how it would make sense the other way as well. We may switch it if it becomes confusing once we begin using it, thanks!
Simple green in an old crock pot will take paint off old parts, FYI
an idea is to youse film like on cars but there is for boat to .. some times depending on the paint work preberation to prep for a film ,, and whit film you kan desine your ovn cool fethers but just an idea
Don't paint the hull, do a WRAP. They make the boat really stand out and cost about the same as paint.
We're going to look into wrapping, getting a lot of comments telling us this is the way to go.
