Oh Shel, sending all the healing prayers I can to you and your family member as you walk through all those hospital hours coming up. I say hospital hours always feel like "dog years" 1 hour feels like 7 years some days. Doing a painty paper to-go book to work on is a great idea. Getting in frequent bits of art therapy is exactly what an artist like you needs. Much love you way 💕💖💕
P.S. know that I will be praying for you and your family. I love turning to my craft supplies to release tension, concern, and worry. Good luck and God bless!
OK, several months late, but I watched this just now as I got home from work, feeling too tired to do any art, but I had to dash upstairs to my studio and made two lovely pages to use in artwork this week. Thanks for a great idea!
Shel, prayers for you and your family! I completely agree about creating painty papers. Ive been in cancer treatments for over a year and almost done. With low energy and somewhat of a creative block, painty papers were my go to. They were easy to do and left me feeling very satisfied. Something to point out is they can look pretty ugly sometimes, but when cutting up to use it suddenly is the most beautiful paper you could use! I generally cut into postcards and just love them. Thanks so much for this inspiring video and sharing how this helps deal with stress...I back that up 100%❤😙👋👣
Thank you Kiki :) Glad to hear you are almost complete with treatment! 4 years ago I was caretaker while dealing with radiation, surgerys and chemo. Creeping up on 5 years of remission and that stuff is back inside him in lymph nodes. So I need an art go bag because we are doing it all over again.
Expecting snow tonight. Ugg. Shel C, you have inspired me with your papers and this will make my snowy, rainy day brighter playing with paint and found objects from the kitchen and garage.....this is good stuff. Thanks
Shel, I hope to be overflowing with pretty painty papers here soon, as I desperately need more. I even have a solution made for making some paste papers. They are so fun to make. Definitely have to get out my Inktense blocks because I haven’t used them in a long time.
These are wonderful! There are times I like clean and simple cards, then there are times I want inky or painty fingers, and to lose myself in a process like this.
Creating painty papers is just about my favourite thing to do, so I just watched your video with a huge smile on my face! You have definitely inspired me just to "play", something I haven't done for a while. thank you Shel for sharing your lovely work, Eleanor x
Oh these are my favorite things to make Shel. No restrictions, no thought process, not much anyway. I was thinking about you last night as I was gel printing and for the first time I was thinking about how you always have papers in specific colors so I did so many of my papers just in specific color groups. Greens, blues, etc. Thinking of what I may use them for in doing collage and trying to have a variety of colors. Usually I just love doing a bunch of different colors but this time was very specific colors. Came out nice.
A great idea Lori :) I like to use maybe 3 shades of a color to do them. Then I have a variegated color piece that I can use later in paper painting. So fun!
These are great. I love doing it too. I have a "paint off" notebook with every color in them from past projects. I go back to a page, add more paint offs to it and make marks, etc. I've yet to use them though so must do it and this reminded me. Looks like fun this way too--actually doing a whole paper in one session. Thank you. XOXOJane
Thank you Jane :) I used to have a book for extra paint but then I just started putting it onto my under papers and building that way. It is really relaxing to just mindlessly put paint on paper.
Firstly, best wishes to you and your family going forward, Shel. Loved watching your process for each painty paper and seeing what tools you used. The tag is very cute with the owl. Great piece to receive in a swap! 😀
Great video, Shel. One of the things I love about making painty paper is that it's so relaxing. It will be interesting to see what you do with the brown paper. Tfs Hugs Shell
Love your painty papers. I also know what you mean about never being finished. I thought I had finished my PASChallenge for February and I posted it to the challenge page. Left the page sitting on my table and thought it still needs something. I am still working on it as I keep adding to it!
I so much enjoyed watching this Shel. A few months ago I did something similar and it really built up my stash of collage papers, and it was fun to do!!! :-) TFS! Sue
Great info Shel. Thoughts are with you/family needing the medical care. Be sure to find time for yourself and some normal life habits and be sure to ask for help when needed. Thoughts and prayers with you
She often uses Deli paper. Can use any kind, copier paper, drawing, magazines, book page. Just depends on how you want to use it and how thick of paper you want
Thank you Sue :) In this video I was using papers that already had paint and stuff on them that I use under my projects on camera. Some was newsprint and others were deli paper. I like thin papers so I can used them for collage. you could use any text weight paper like notebook, printer, old scrapbook papers, etc.
Always fun to make painty papers Shel. I've been building up my own stash the past few days with the idea to have a to-go art bag as well. I've been going over to my sister's more lately with all the snow & want something small I can take that will give me some variety of things to play with if I have the time when I'm there. They're crafty kids so they will usually join along if I get stuff out. I've been playing with collages of different colors of book pages with different fonts and different languages. Then layering napkins over that. I plan to have a stack then all I'll need is some pens and paint markers to doodle with. Have a great rest of your week.
Oh yes, it is fun and relaxing. I think a to go bag is a great idea and I want to have one I don't have to think about. In the past I have 'put together' a bag to take..but then unpacked it after. That new Dina Wakely collage collective book really gave me push to collect a lot of things and keep them ready to go on a moments notice.
@@ShelCPaperOcotilloStudio I didn't know what you were referring to so I looked it up. Yes, I've been wanting to make myself a flowish style journal that would contain painty papers and other images that I've collected. Then put it into a make-up type bag along with a glue stick, some gel & acrylic paint pens, a water tank brush and some neocolor IIs. Plus defintely some fibers :-) That way when I need to go to my sister's to watch a sick kid or watch them for a snow day I have things to do I find interesting. I can only take so much cartoons, although I do love to watch along with them so I can know what they are interested in. LOL-I'm planning it now as I'm writing to you. Need to add some washi samples and some paper doilies. :-) Have fun putting yours together. Maybe we should show off out To-go art bags in the AJOS FB group.
Thanks for showing us another great way to build our stash. Your pages look really good, and I look forward to seeing how you use them. Also, that tag is adorable!!!
Great paihty papers Shel 👍 good to have ready for projects. I sometimes use lift over paints to start backgrounds on canvases and then add stencils and textures with modeling paste hoping it might give me inspiration 😂😂
I don't have a 'stash' so I need to act on this inspiration and begin! Hope all goes well with the family situation - will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
Thank you Jennifer :) This is a great way to get started with mixed media collage..as well as have fun! Thanks for the kind thoughts...hoping for a good phone call today.
Hey Shel, Lovein those painty papers doll,,,, yanno that brown one that looks like bark, well you could always use it to make a dawg❣🐶🐶 Get it,, *bark, dawg* lol I know it was bad lmao. Mucho hugzzzzzzz my friend🦄🦄
Hi Shel...love your paint papers...have you ever used a glass pen for your Indian Ink? I have seen writing done with them but would be interested to know how they go for ART....🐨
Thank you Patricia :) I think those glass pens are so beautiful and have ALMOST ordered one LOL However, I resisted so I can not give a review of them.
Absolutely! I generally apply gesso to help hide, or just use the white backside if single sided, or incorporate the colors into my "design". Its a great way to use up that stuff that is just sitting there...I have tons of it ❤
Yes! I have been using scrapbook paper for this technique, then sponge on colors that coordinate with the pattern, leaving some of it peeking through. I cut them up for bookmarks to share at my local library.
Oh for sure! Making painty papers or gel printing over that scrapbook paper you don't like is something I have done a lot. If you use opaque acrylic colors you don't have to gesso :) Craft paints are great for this because they have a lot of fillers so usually pretty opaque.
Usually people find it in recycle/reuse arts and crafts stores. They do sell it on amazon amzn.to/2T8c2M5 but kind expensive I think. Here is a stencil that has 3 of the patterns on it and is much cheaper.amzn.to/2EojZml
Shel, last year sometime you used golden open paints and you said you were going to use them again. Did you ever do a you tube video? I have a set and not used them yet. Please help!
Hi Randi. It is just an old fashioned 'fountain pen'. You dip it in ink and the ink stays in a channel on the nib until it runs out. Then you dip it again.
Thank you Debbie :) Gel printing is just using a tool to make prints. This is more old school. Somewhat the results are the same..but not completely. Also, these need a few more bits of mark making still..not finished!
Nothing more relaxing than playing with paint and no particular plan . I hope all goes well with your family problems. Xx
Thank you :) Yes, paint with no plan is exactly what this is..FUN. Thank you for the good thoughts

Thank you so much Anne :) Yes, I need some way to take art with me as those hours are long and drawn out for sure!
P.S. know that I will be praying for you and your family. I love turning to my craft supplies to release tension, concern, and worry. Good luck and God bless!
Thank you Evelyn :) Art is a great therapy for working through things.
Yep, I understand about family stuff. That's why art is so important.
Thank you Veronica :) yup..art is my freedom.
Love the painty papers. Great tag. The owl is so cute.
Thank you Deb :)
Love all your painted papers. TFS
Thank you Laura :)

Thank you Annie :) Enjoy your painty snow day!
Loving these videos, making painty papers. Certainly is my favorite pastime, when I’m not into working on a project. Great ideas, Shel.
Thank you Cheryl :) Yes, I love papers and am over flowing with them LOL
Shel, I hope to be overflowing with pretty painty papers here soon, as I desperately need more. I even have a solution made for making some paste papers. They are so fun to make. Definitely have to get out my Inktense blocks because I haven’t used them in a long time.
Thanks so much for the sped up version!!
Thank you for watching Sonja :)
These are wonderful! There are times I like clean and simple cards, then there are times I want inky or painty fingers, and to lose myself in a process like this.
Thank you Jesse :) This sort of practice is really relaxing to me. Just slapping on some painty colors and shapes + Ahhhh.
Looks like so much fun! Can’t wait to try these techniques! TFS
Thank you Evelyn :) Have fun with it!
Prayers for you and yours. I am inspired to make painty papers.
Thank you Ann :) Have fun making painty papers!
I really like the painty papers you made! Thanks for the video!!
Thank you Joanne :)
I love this video. You take your painty papers a couple of steps further than I usually do. I need to work on mine a little more.
You can do it! Gel printing is just so fun and rewarding!
love this
Love your painty papers. I want to try some. Looks like fun. Thanks for showing us how.
Thank you Lynette :) I am glad you are inspired to get some paint out and play!

Go for it and have fun :)

Love all your papers. I think I know what I will be doing this weekend. 💚💚
I hope you have tons of fun with it Nora Jean :)
Great video, Shel. One of the things I love about making painty paper is that it's so relaxing. It will be interesting to see what you do with the brown paper. Tfs Hugs Shell
Thank you Shell :) It is relaxing for sure. Not sure about the brown though LOL
It’s fun to get out the dip pens and go “old school”.
Oh yes. Those are super fun for doing sketchy illustrations. I need to do that soon now that I found the dang pen :)
Those look fun to make. Hope everything is ok with your family, sending good wishes.
Thank you Michael Ann :) Things are not OK but we will push through it. Hopefully a good phone call today. Fingers crossed.

Hope things are good for you Shel. Great info, as always
Thank you Pam :) I am doing my best and will continue to do so!

Thankyou for sharing , loved the owl as well as everything you did 🤗
Oh that owl is just so cute! Thanks for watching Wendy :)

Thank you Shirley :) Great use for your painty paper!
Nice idea. I am in a bit of a rut artistically. This at least would occupy me for a time. And it is being creative.
Yes May :) Give it a try..build your stash..and it will be motivation to get some collaging and art journaling done later on :)
Love the painted papers! So simple, so random, beautiful!
Oh ya, just say no to float lol 😂
Thank you Cheri :) For sure..no floating in my composition!

Get it,, *bark, dawg* lol I know it was bad lmao.
Mucho hugzzzzzzz my friend🦄🦄
HAHA! but yes, it would be a good doggie color anyway. Thanks Patty :P
I need to make some painty papers in those rusty southwest colors so I can do a collage of my Arizona house.
Great idea Reny :)
I do that on a smaller scale but yours are beautiful
Thank you Candy :)
Great papers!! love those stencils, are they from stencil girl?
Thank you Yvonne :) yup..StencilGirl stencils...they have the best ones and I am addicted!
I hate when life gets in the way of watching the livestream.
LOL...at least it is on recording so you can watch later!

Thank you Surana :) Not yet..I am working on making a better one that I can keep on hand and never unpack at this point.

Absolutely! I generally apply gesso to help hide, or just use the white backside if single sided, or incorporate the colors into my "design". Its a great way to use up that stuff that is just sitting there...I have tons of it ❤

Ah ...I have not yet done it. I still have that basic set in the drawer. I will get them out and gel print with them..that was my intent! Sorry!
What is a dip pen.?
Hi Randi. It is just an old fashioned 'fountain pen'. You dip it in ink and the ink stays in a channel on the nib until it runs out. Then you dip it again.
This is fun to watch, just like your gel printing. I love making painty paper/master boards. Not sure if I know the difference.
Thank you Debbie :) Gel printing is just using a tool to make prints. This is more old school. Somewhat the results are the same..but not completely. Also, these need a few more bits of mark making still..not finished!
