    Ok, so Bismark was one of the biggest battleships in WWII, it was a German ship, it was sunk (or scuttled) as you saw.
    This video was made in cooperation with the gaming company World of Warships.
    Sabaton sings mostly about real events, persons or battles in war history, a few songs are more concept songs about war.
    If you don't know the story, you can check their history channel where they explain it.
    Since you're from Belgium, you should check the song "Resist and Bite".
    It has a really cool sound, and it's about 40 Belgian soldiers in WWII.

      It wasn't just one of the biggest. It was literally the 2nd biggest piece of floating metal in WW2. The only bigger ship was the Japanese Yamato. However in terms of raw firepower one could argue that Bismarck had Yamato beat.

    So a bit of a dramatic and tragic story about the most famous ship of the Second world war-the Bismarck, which went on its first and last voyage (like the Titanic), which ended in its death.
    Bismarck (KMS Bismark) - German battleship, the lead ship of the same class, was still no less famous for its brother-Tirpitz.
    Bismarck is one of the most legendary ships of the Second world war, as well as being the largest battleship in Europe and one of the largest in the world along with the Japanese Yamato and the American Missouri.
    Bismarck was launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940. Bismarck's first (and last) campaign began on may 22, 1941. Then Bismarck, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen (KMS Prinz Eugen) was to break through the Danish Strait into the Atlantic and begin to sink convoys going to Britain. The first German squadron was discovered by the British cruisers Suffolk and Norfolk (HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk) on the evening of 23 may. The British battleship Prince of Wales (HMS Prince of Wales) and the battlecruiser hood (HMS Hood) went to intercept Bismarck. During the battle, Bismarck received several hits, at the same time 5 Bismarck's volley hit directly into Hood's artillery cellars. Hood was torn in two by a massive explosion. Of the 1,477 crew members, only 3 survived. Among the dead was the commander of the British squadron Lancelot Ernest Holland.
    The Prince of Wales tried to continue the battle, but to no avail and soon disappeared in a smoke screen as one of the shells from Bismarck hit the command post of the Prince of Wales, thereby killing half of the officers, by the way the second shell fired from Bismarck hit the Prince of Wales, but did not explode, the British then pushed him into the sea. Bismarck had one of the generators disabled, two fuel tanks were breached, and there was a trim on the bow and a roll on the starboard side. Gunther Lutyens (commander of the German squadron) decided to lead the Bismarck to the French port of Saint-Nazaire for repairs. Prince Eugen was ordered to continue raiding. Bismarck was chased by the entire British fleet in the region. Bismarck's injuries were not very serious, but they caused Bismarck to lose one of his main advantages - speed. The British lost Bismarck several times, but due to the fact that the British intercepted a radio message sent to Bismarck, it was possible to establish the approximate location of the ship. Bismarck left little to the French Brest. Also, when approaching the coast of occupied France, Bismarck could use Luftwaffe aircraft (Luftwaffe - aviation of the Third Reich) to cover. Only compound H, based in Gibraltar, was able to detain Bismarck. This unit included the aircraft carrier Ark Royal (HMS Ark Royal). On the morning of may 26, the Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers flew to the site of the last sighting of the Bismarck. Approximately in the same area was the cruiser Sheffield (HMS Sheffield). The Swordfish pilots mistook Sheffield for Bismarck and torpedoed it. The new magnetic fuses of the torpedoes did not work, and the cruiser remained intact. After this incident, the British changed the magnetic fuses to contact ones. By evening, Sheffield had made visual contact with Bismarck and the Swordfish torpedoes were back in the air. Swadeshi was flying very low and slowly, because of this, the crews of Bismarck simply could not distinguish from the sea. The Suodfishes themselves were biplanes that were obsolete even before they were put into service. The British achieved two or three torpedo hits. One of these hits was fatal for Bimark - in an attempt to evade the torpedo, Bismarck turned to the left and because of this, the torpedo, instead of hitting the main armored belt, hit the poorly protected aft compartment and tightly jammed the rudders. By morning, orders were given to stop the cars - Bismarck was in the zone of action of German bombers, who did not give Bismarck any help. Bismarck was approached by the British battleships Rodney (HMS Rodney) and King George V (HMS King George V). Bismarck's fire was focused on Rodney, but due to the roll and inability to evade enemy volleys, accuracy was very low. After 44 minutes, all 4 towers of the Bismarck group stopped firing. In order to somehow save some of the surviving crew, after being shot by British ships, captain Ernst Lindemann, who survived the bombing, ordered the engine room to be blown up, the kingstons opened and the ship abandoned. After the fuses were installed, 9 minutes later an explosion was heard from the depths of the wounded Bismarck, which contributed to the final sinking and roll of the battleship on Board. At this point, the cruiser Dosertshire (HMS Dorsetshire), firing 3 torpedoes at the immobilized Bismarck. Bismarck went to the bottom without lowering the battle flag. Of the 2,220 crew, only 114 people were saved - 111 people were saved by the British, and 3 people by the German submarine U-74. Captain Ernst Lindemann himself, as told by the surviving sailors, did not try to make attempts to escape, but on the contrary drove away all the sailors who tried to save him, threatening to shoot (this is so for intimidation), as a result, captain Lindemann heroically went to the bottom with his ship, the last time he was seen at the stern, when he said goodbye to the surviving sailors. The ship's cat Oscar, nicknamed "Unsinkable Sam"by the British, was also rescued from Bismarck. This cat survived the sinking of 3 ships-the Bismarck itself, the SS Cossack (HMS Cossack) and the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, the same one that caused fatal damage to Bismarck, in the Achilles heel of the invulnerable battleship. By the way after a dive expedition James Cameron, it has been proven that the British torpedo and shells are unable to contribute to the sinking of Bismarck, ie breaking was not detected by torpedoes at the armored belt, but below waterlinie was exactly cut out of the side, this proves that Bismarck scuttled by the Germans themselves when they blew the bottom of the ship and opened the seacocks and not British!

    Here's a quick version of the meaning of the song. Germany in WW2 had a Battleship named Bismarck, and on it's first and only mission, it sunk the pride ship of Britain, which lead to a hunt to sink the Bismarck from the Allies, which after being surrounded and wounded, it later the crew sank the ship themselves or scuttled the ship.

      They weren't really as powerful as the myth would say. It got such a name because it sunk HMS Hood, the flagship of the Royal Navy, but although the Hood had similar belt armour and armament, it was an old WW1 ship, well past it's service date, and suffered from less armour against plunging shots, which where it's death. The HMS Prince of Wales that was with it on the other hand was actually more than a match for the Bismarck, being better armoured, having more guns and being more technologically advanced. Unfortunately the technology had teething issues and it was crewed with a new crew, leading to jamming of it's armament and misuse of it's advanced radar aiming. The few shots it did get off showed frightening accuracy and the capability for it's guns to penetrate the thickest armour on the Bismarck.
      Sending the bulk of the RN after it was more symbolic than necessary (although it was a big effort to locate, track and catch it).

      It wasn't the entire Royal Navy - at the time the Royal Navy was the most powerful in the world. It had over 15 battleships and battlecruisers, 7 aircraft carriers, 66 cruisers, 164 destroyers and 66 submarines. Bismarck and Priz Eugen were engaged by planes from HMS Ark Royal (one of which critically damaged Bismarck's steering gear) and she was engaged in her final battle by the battleships King George V and Rodney along with the heavy cruisers Norfolk and Dorsetshire. More a small task force than an entire navy.

    The story of the battleship Bismark is a tragedy of arrogance. Arrogance that the rudder design was not changed when they realized they'd be venerable to torpedo attack, arrogance that the radar systems were not tested during firing exercises, arrogance that the ship was sent out of a fool's errand with only a heavy cruiser as escort. It was an amazing ship when it was built, but they had to known that the Royal Navy would NEVER let it into the North Atlantic.

    The brandnew german Battleship Bismark left Harbor in Denmark Street north of Britain heading the Atlantic Ocean with his (yes, his not her, firts and i guess only ship ever pronounced male) Escort 'Prinz Eugen' - they were spotted by the Flagship of the british Navy, the HMS Hood, back then the guessed most powerfull Warship. it took not even 3 minutes for Bismarck and Prinz Eugen to sink the Hood and badly damage her Escort 'Prince of Wales'... after that it took a nearly 45 hours chase by the complete british Navy when Bismark, lightly damaged by the previous battle let Prinz Eugen escape to Atlantic while heading towards a german occupied french harbor for repairs. But the british Navy finaly got Bismark before the Safe zone and sunk her - but it took nearly 90 minutes, not just 3 with constant hits to get that Monster, 50.000 tons of steel, sunk, and only was possible because of a lucky Torpedo Hit at the (dont know the word in english, sorry, "Ruder" in german), so that Bismark could only do circles on Sea ;)

    First of all great reaction of Sabaton "Bismarck"! It seems you and your friend like this video maybe future fans? What some have probably already said is that this particular video is made in collaboration with Wargaming's World of Warships and they have a song / video "Steel Commanders" that are Wargaming's World of Tanks. You have opened a floodgate of good songs and videos in future and I want to recommend Sabaton History Channel. There you can see the stories behind the songs and videos and get a real history lesson. Welcome to the Sabaton family!
    Also I want to point out that Bismarck was a German battleship that was the second largest ship during World War II that weighed 50,300 tons and had a crew of about 2,200 men. Afterwards the sinking of the Bismarck just over 100 sailors survived of the 2,200-man crew. The largest battleship was the Japanese Yamato size of both her guns and displacement, displacing 72,000 tons and had a crew size of about 3,332 men. Just a factoid from a Sabaton fan. Have a great day/evening and take care!

    Bismark was one of the smaller Battleships planned by the Krigsmarine (german navy of ww2) however after it was sunk by the allies the program was cancelled and the larger planned vessels were never built, 2 ships of its type was however built, the Bismark, and the Tirpitz, the Tirpitz was also sunk after haveing been attacked several times the germans beached her in a fjord in norway and used her as a gun placement untill it was attacked again and sunk, the bismark was actualy undone by an outdated warplane in the form of a lucky strike from a "swordfish torpedo bomber" the torpedo of said bomber struck and deteonated at the aft of the rudder control room, destroying rudder the rudder control mechanism as well as the control room, leaving the rudder in a fully turned state and the ship incapable of anything but sailing in a circle, after that it was attacked by the british fleet and sunk, however there is some debate as to the actual sinking of the vessel, as it is belived that the vessel may have not in fact been sunk by the british but rather scuttled by its captain by leaving the watertight bulkhed doors open and then opening up the seachest inlet manifold flooding the engine room and any other room connected to it.. although it is unclear if it is true or just a story that it was scuttled..

    Same thing was with Tirpitz..letting IT leave that Norwegian Harbour would have been disastorous.

    The "Bismarck" , and her sister ship "Tirpitz", were the 2 largest and most powerful battleships ever built in Europe and they were the pride of the kriegsmarine (Germany's militari navy) during Ww2. The "Bismarck" set sail in May 1941 to reach the Atlantic and destroy merchant convoys, but she was intercepted by the British and during a brief fight, destroyed the former flagship of the British fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, the worldwide famous battlecruiser "Hood", by penetrating her armor and detonating her aft main ammunition magazine and killing all 1900 members of her crew except for 3 men, and heavily damaged the battleship "Prince of Wales". This enraged the prime minister Winston Churcil who ordered all his ships in the Atlantic to abandon their operations and destroy the Bismarck. In total more than 40 ships participated to the hunt, making it the biggest naval hunt in history. Meanwhile Bismarck, who had received a hit during the first battle, was leaking fuel and was trying to reach the French port of Saint Nazaire, in occupied France, for repair. After 6 days of playing cat and mouse with the British, Bismarck was attacked by airplanes launched from the aircraft carrier "Ark Royal" and hit by a torpedo in the stern, which jammed her rudders during evasive manuvers, meaning that she was forced to sail in circles, just a few miles away from reaching air cover. In the end battleships "King George V" and "Rodney", along side the heavy cruisers "Norfolk" and "Dorsedshire" fought the already doomed battleship and, during the following 90 minutes completely destroyed her. However, despite having all her guns destroyed, and having received more than 400 hits (out of the 2800 shells that the British had fired at her) her armor was still intact and the ship was still afloat. So the british launched another 4 torpedoes and she disappeared beneath the waves. After inspection of the wreck however it had been discovered that the torpedoes did no significant damage thanks to the battleship's excellent armor, and that Bismarck had been scuttled by her crew. Of the 2200 men that served on her, only 114 survived. The old man seen in the video is the son of the last survivor, who died in 2018, 1 year before this song was released

      Worth noting that on paper the hood (although an outdated WW1 ship) and Prince of Wales where certainly a match for the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. The hood had similar firepower, albeit with a slower fire rate and similar hull armour, but fatally not much deck armour. The Prince of Wales on the other hand was actually better armoured all around than the Bismarck, had more guns (1 inch smaller, but proved enough to penetrate the Bismarck's strongest armour and was more accurate than the Bismarck's guns) and had more advanced technology in it's fire and damage control systems. If running at full power it would have been capable of taking on the Bismarck and escort alone. The issue was it's technology was new, and so was it's crew, which led to issues with it's guns jamming, slow loading and misuse of the radar assisted aiming.
      In reality the Bismarck and Tirpitz where never the most powerful ships in Europe, They where just the greatest threat to an already stretched thin Royal navy when added to existing forces, and got lucky by taking out their most famous ship, the Hood, which was outdated and tired. The King George class however was more advanced, better armoured, had better range, and more deadly firepower, but suffered from teething issues due to incorporating so much new technology and inexperienced crews. Then near the end of the war there was the HMS Vanguard which was bigger than the Bismarck and a little smaller than the Tirpitz (displacement) but was much more advanced than either, being the last and most modern battleship built in the world (to date).

    • @willghezzi
      @willghezzi 2 роки тому +1

      @@MrEsphoenix I agree with most of what you said, but the prince of Wales didn't use radar assisted artillery at Denmark straight, her equipment wasn't goot enough at that point in the war, her accuracy was also lacking: she hit Bismarck at the beginning but then failed to score any more hits, and her shells penetrated Bismarck's bow not the main armor. In term of accuracy the tirpitz (during an excercise against the Hessen in 1941) proved to be one of the most accurate battleship ever, hitting her 9 times at around 25km, with a maximum dispersion on 112 meters (same as the uss Iowa) and scored an hit percent of 7.5 (higher than any other battleship ever did), and this was in 1941, before she received all the upgrades to her radar. Also yes vanguard was comparable, but her guns were modernized ww1 era 15 inch guns, they were alright, but not better than those on the Bismarcks

    • @MrEsphoenix
      @MrEsphoenix 2 роки тому

      @@willghezzi From what I've saw it had it's targeting radar systems added less than a month before the battle in its May refit. The issue was the crew didn't know how to use it properly. Either way, it wasn't in play for the first battle.
      I never said it penetrated it's thickest armour in that battle. The damage was found on the wreck later, and would have been done by the HMS Rodney, as well as penetrating similar armour in other battles. It's guns are considered one of the most effective naval cannons used in WW2, with fantastic accuracy. The fact they where first used in WW1 doesn't matter. A gun is just a metal tube. The ammo, targeting and assuming systems where all upgraded to modern standards.

    • @willghezzi
      @willghezzi 2 роки тому +1

      @@MrEsphoenix I never said that the guns on vanguard were bad, they were, as you said, upgraded with all recent technology. But a gun is not only a tube, the construction technique helps a lot. For example the british used a semi rigid structure while the Germans used the "all steel" rigid structure. This allowed the Germans to outmatch the british guns in terms of how much stress the barrel could take. If you go look at the stats (particularly on navweaps) you will find that the 15 inch mounted on Bismarck could penetrate almost 100mm more than the 16 inch on Rodney, and the same thing goes for the 15 inch guns. The British weapons were good, but the German ones were better. And another demonstration of this is the fact that the 11 inch on scharnhorst could penetrate slightly more side armor than the 14 inch on the king George V

    • @MrEsphoenix
      @MrEsphoenix 2 роки тому

      @@willghezzi Didn't see you'd mentioned the vanguard to be honest, my bad. I was talking about the 14 inch guns of the HMS Prince of Wales. No point comparing penetration particularly, as it doesn't show the full story (and often gives penetration values of their use when they where first in service, which get's improved upon greatly as their service live goes on). We're not talking about tanks, but ships. Over matching armour too much can lead to more overpenetration shots and failed detonations (which happened when the Prince of wales hit the bow of the Bismarck, and the shells went strait through the other side with minimal damage), but you want enough penetration to get through the armour reliably, which was proven the 14Inch guns could do.
      There is no real match with the Vanguard it was the last battleship built in the world, and the most advanced, I only brought it up as a counter point to the Bismarck and Tirpitz being the most powerful ships built in Europe. The guns it used where tested by America as the most accurate and reliable guns used in WW2 and it holds the record as the longest range hit in the war. With the new supercharged rounds and improve elevation of the MK1(N) RP12, they could match the range of the German guns (but they could actually reliable hit a target at a much longer range), yet had much better accuracy and a more powerful and reliable round. Not to mention they where fitted on an all around more powerful, better armoured and more survivable ship, with more advanced radar, that was slightly faster than the Bismarck.
      The Bismarck and Tirpitz where very impressive, but over rated, as many German vehicles came to be. It got lucky in it's first fight and unlucky when it tried to flee, but it could not have gone toe to toe with the royal navy. It was a threat because it was fast, and when added to the existing fleet the RN would have struggled to keep it in check and protect it's supply convoys, not because it could take on any fight without concern.

      they did mention ww1 and ww2 but pretty much only mentioned them, which nations were involved, during which years they happened and only a few of the big events from the wars such as the d-day and attack on pearl harbour but no real details about them, wasnt until i saw documentaries about it on history channel that i learned more and then even more when i heard songs from sabaton (and iron maiden) thats based on real history where i then looked up more info about it.
