"THANK YOU," Russell! Finally we have someone teaching the average golfer how to get more out of the game! The prevailing idea of trying to teach the casual amateur golfer how to swing like a professional golfer is ludicrous! WOW!

I’ll give it a try. I’ve come back into the game after 25 years. I’m now 70. I was an 11 handicap. I’m roughly hitting the ball 50 yards less with every single club on top of that I’m inconsistent. So yes, I’ll definitely give it a try thank you.

Such a great reminder. For people like me who took on golf later in life and played other sports when younger, it can feel very strange to feel such a short backswing. I've always been warned of the dangers of a restrictive hip turn, but your hips will turn plenty to accommodate your level of flexibility. I feel like I only shift/rotate left/forward, and it has made the swing so much simpler, and I've actually gained a couple MPH on my swing. I've always struggled with a scoop or flip/roll release with low point right at the ball, and this has helped get my body in the correct release position to use the correct wrist/release mechanics.

Tried pinning my arm across my chest in my backswing this morning and shot six pars in nine holes off the club tee boxes. I'm 72 years old and a16 handicap. Could have done better but for our diabolical greenkeeper who has dug up the collars around all our greens to reseed them.Three days ago I shot a 99 with a mixture of good and bad hits. This tells me my backswing has been inconsistent in my efforts to get more distance, It also tells me that your advice is spot on and worth trying. I got good distance and consistently straight shots using it. Thank you.

I've been using a much shorter compact swing and concentrating on the weight transfer as you suggest, but that's due to back issues. In a world where I did not have to do this, I don't know whether I would be still doing this. If you take a look at any long drive contestant or female professional golfer (who can outdrive most amateurs), the arc in their swing is enormous. Also, if you take a look at anyone trying to throw a frisbee as far as they can, they certainly do have a big shoulder and hip rotation. Proponents of the big arc swing would argue that a large arc, especially if one lifts the heel of the forward foot to increase the arc results in greater distance with less effort. Would be interested in your opinion on this. Thanks for your video.

    • @russellheritagegolf
      @russellheritagegolf  Рік тому +2

I agree this is not a swing for distance. However the problem that plagues most Am’s is inconsistency and making mistakes. If you control your contact, starting direction and curvature then you can add distance. If not then don’t go there first

Found this to be a really interesting lesson. Always struggled with the so called full shoulder turn and the manipulation of the body to get the left shoulder under the chin, even harder now that I am in my seventies. Will certainly be giving this method a go. Correct me if Im wrong but are these thoughts exemplified by the swing of Tour Pro John Rahm?

    Hello Russell,
Is this move sort of saying not to do the traditional one piece takeaway by moving the “Y” all at once. So swing arms up to the chest, small amount of turn, then let it go, all staying more forward through the whole move? Jim Hardy had similar moves I believe.

Short backswing means a change in stiffness of the shaft. The slower golf swing (older people) will have to make adjustments in either the shaft, grip further down the shaft, or baseball grip, etc. Me thinks quite a process.

But a frisbee isn’t a pole with a weight at the end of it. Your move will definitely improve consistency. I spent years practicing the reverse K movement or the right sided swing as they call it. I even won a few club events. But I have returned to a traditional swim with a full turn because I was tired of being obliterated off the tee.

Why not start with weight forward like S&T thus maintaining the arc.Keep the arms very connected, effectively turning the upper arms and shoulders together. The upper lead arm staying close to the upper chest.
Keep the back swing short with no conscious wrist hinge minimising arm shoulder separation .Feel the downswing as a reverse motion of the back swing. And catapult the club through the ball.Swinging upwards with arms and shoulders.
The whole feeling is connected, compact with greater confidence in achieving more consistent impact.
    All variables are significantly reduced.
Just a suggestion to other golfers who struggle with the mainstream professional approach. You may well hit it longer and straighter.

My coach is telling me not to shift foprward until I've reached the top of my backswing but I am struggling with this. It feels easier to try and keep more weight on the lead side to stop the sway backwards. Also he's very much of the full backswing school. I get it but at time I feel more in control with a shorter backseing, especially with the irons

There should be no steadfast rules in golf tuition, your pro should be utilising what you have and your ability. The days of every teaching pro preaching the same sh1t from the same book are long gone. If you have an older teaching pro, dump him/her, go to a younger teaching pro and they will do things very differently and your game will improve significantly faster. I'm 58 and have always used pros with a similar my age and older than myself, big mistake, I gave up hitting a driver for 25 years because of my horrendous slice and my pro couldn't fix!! I found a young teaching pro who has now got me hitting driver arrow straight or with a baby draw in 3 lessons and admittedly a lot of time at the range practising, lessons became fun, with clear concise instruction and all to my ability. To think I must have wasted thousands of £££ on sh1t lessons from lazy teaching pros, I firmly believe they didnt want to help improve my game knowing I would come back week after week and give them another £40 for 30 minutes. I now see my "young" teaching pro only 1/2 times a year max. I'm now playing the best golf in 35 years and more importantly I'm enjoying it. If your teaching pro isn't improving your game just sack him off.

There's lots going on. If you're really athletic, then make the biggest backswing that you can make, engaging everything you have, in order to add force and whip action. If you're like me, unathletic, and now old, you realized a long time ago that a great big back swing just feels like you're out of control, because again, there's lots going on. You can either master all that...or not. But don't kid yourself -- you'll never be great if you're eliminating steps as advised here. That said, it's great advice. The "ah-ha" moment comes when you admit to yourself that you could practice forever and never be great because you're not athletic in the first place. I have a nephew who is athletic. He walks onto any field, court, course, whatever and he looks natural. You can see it. HE could learn to play really well. But, if you're like me and you don't feel in yourself what you're seeing in an athletic person, then give up on the big back swing, because it was never right for you in the first place. Why frustrate yourself for years trying to pick up 20 more yards, and making mistakes, while you could be enjoying yourself playing inside your game? Like Dirty Harry said, "A man's got to know his limitations." Or, if you prefer, To Know Yourself is to Know God.

Some good suggestions here but why call it a "No backswing move" and talk about it being a shorter backswing? Take a look at the end of the video where Russell actually hits a ball. At the completion of his backswing, there is a full shoulder turn, with back to the target, left arm well above horizontal and hands above head.. In other words an excellent but normal backswing. In fact more turn and arm lift than many older players will be able to achieve.

S&T was huge at one point, it got loads right but it’s marketing was a big turnoff for many. If it had just been marketed better it would have worked.
It also over did it with the fundamentals, it tried to push how different it was when in reality it was just another way of explaining a proper golf swing with some fancy moves attached. It was based on some good ideas but it was over done and over marketed.

I guess a matter of opinion. I have greatly reduced my back swing from 3 years ago, hardly any distance lost. But, I know, that’s just me. Personally I see this as a perfect lesson for 95% of the golfers out there. Those lessons where they include 20 different things ( like you are coaching Rory or Scotty etc.) are ridiculous for the average golfer. Keeping it simple makes it less frustrating with better results.
