I've been learning to sing from other sources/videos so I have some basis/feel for my voice but literally within the two days after watching this video I unlocked 2/3 more of an octave in modal(?) register. I could only hit those notes in falsetto before. I'm now hitting them in what I think is actual head voice and all of my modal register sounds more relaxed and open now. Insanity. This really works. Thank you for this!!

Great video and great explanation. I also believe that the pulling faces thing comes from trying to control everything. Making sure it’s placed right. It makes singing effortless , the only thing that’s hard is controlling the pressure and excessive force and sometimes that makes us pull faces too!

Fabulous video, thank you. I did the fire engine up and down sound you did in the early part of the clip and with my pitch monitor app could see I went up to G5. When I've done scales previously I've only ever managed to get to D5#. Still haven't figured out yet how to actually sing a word way up there but am hoping because I managed to get there doing your exercise that one day I might be able to. The lower notes are easy for me. I'm just a beginner but know my natural range is as an alto. Thank you again for posting these great learning videos.
Thanks for your comment. This is great to hear - it takes a little whilte to learn to access those higher areas - G5 is great - your voice opens up in sections from there so as you find the next resonance space you'll jump 3-4 notes at a time. it's amazing - less air and pressure to get through that next spot and try it with ooo, eee and ah to see which is your easiest one as you go higher. To start to sing up there try the gentle exercises - they will start to help you navigate those areas with words and I have found the ugly, nasally or nasty scales help unlock it quicker because that sound helps recruit the muscles you need to learn to sing up there - it's pretty amazing. So glad you are enjoying the videos
@@AngiesVocals Thank you so much for your reply. I will have to get seriously stuck into your exercises! I've discovered while practicing singing Yesterday Once More (Carpenters) that I'm now often hitting some F4# notes at both F4# & F5# within the same word and I have no idea how this is happening? It's also happening with a lot of the B3 notes, the pitch monitor tells me I'm also hitting B4. My voice seems to waver between the two notes that are an octave apart, is this normal when you are a beginner? Thank You.
My vocal coach compared the back and forth reflection of the sound waves in the open space lf the mouth to the physics that lead up to a rocket launching. I may not have described it as well as she did but it sort of clicked for me.
lately I started thinking about going back ( instead of forward) so your video makes so much sense. I just subscribed...looking forward to watching more
Really wow, thank you so much.. this helped me instantly.. I was struggling so long with this, to properly understad it.. now i feel like i finally know how i can properly and relaxed play the different registers.. Helped not only for high notes, but for my whole voice actually, if i imply over time i feel like my fucked up singing will be fixed though
Omg omg omg! Thnk u thnk u thnk u! Have spent my whole life struggling with that n all techniques I tried failed. N here I have the solution!!! Thnks from the bottom of my heart! ❤
I’ve got a heavier baritone singing voice. I can hit up to D5/E5 in falsetto but usually can’t sustain full voice above E4 very well, if at all. I know I can sing these higher notes in falsetto, but all I want is to hit those G4’s and A4’s with a full sound.
So biologically you have at least another octave of strong mix voice above your D/E4 - do when we talk about a mixed voice it means you can sing with no restrictions in a powerful voice up to your E/F5 - at the moment you are using mostly chest - (I did the same for the first 35 years of my life) so I know it’s possible personally!! So exciting… it’s not logical so most people can’t get free without a coach/guide but all these tips are designed to start getting you looking in the right place. 🎶 it’s mind blowing! And easier than you think. 🎶
@@AngiesVocals I’ve just tried for years and haven’t accessed a strong and simultaneously easeful sound in that upper part of my range. My falsetto is pretty strong from F4-D5 though. Some coaches say it comes from building the falsetto/head voice and some say otherwise. I just want to gain those notes on top without hurting my voice
Ok yes. So you can find it a few different ways but most people that are strong chest singers (like I was) can’t get breakthrough from this point without a coach. You need a guide. I find people need at least 10 lessons with a coach before they can start to find it themselves and then it takes 6-12 months before you can live there. But once you’ve got it you have it for life.
I learnt to train my voice by intensively studying and mimicking Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston most of the time... This tutorial was really easy on the go
Im a lower baritone, and my chest voice is D2-D#4. After D4 or even C4, i can place my voice "in my nose" and go up to a B4 or C5. In the bridge, the voice cracks, but after E4/F4, my voice becomes powerful and effortless (there is effort but no strain). What is happening with my voice that lets me reach higher notes with ease, but sounds nasally?
@@eemoot Thankyou for your question. So you are using more of a nasal phyrengyal mix to access that area. You can also smooth your transition so it doesn’t crack - mixing the chest and head - and have 1 voice all the way through.
@AngiesVocals oh thank you! I'm just confused because after the F4, my voice sounds almost identical to chest voice, but I can choose to make it more heady or chesty. It's slightly less bass-y and is brighter, but still loud and powerful and chesty. What I'm confused about is why the bridge doesn't want to smooth into this mix. Because I can "mix" to be very chesty after the bridge, but I can't "mix" in the bridge? Thank you so much though! I really appreciate it!
The BIG question is, does the act of visualizing distract the part of our mind that wants to clench and push and work hard for those elusive high notes in turn allowing the body’s natural ability to hit them to just happen? In other words when we imagine something we momentarily get out of our own way and the body can just do what it was born to do (with ease). I guess it doesn’t matter.. if it works it works!! 😅. So I thank you! I couldn’t find anything on the purple ball online - does anyone know where I can find more on it? Maybe under a different name ?
@@UtheGuru it’s a great question. It seems to be different for everyone. For some people it works for some not. What I have found is that most people visualise the wrong thing (high notes are up) so it just gets worse. My personal frustration when I had vocal damage was that nothing worked. Either way my voice got worse and worse and nothing worked. I have found with the right guidance people can gain mastery. The purple ball is an example of how quite often people feel mix/free voice differently. Some of my clients say it feels like a ledge, some can’t feel anything. Some feel like it’s a colour, a place, a shape.
Thank you so much for responding!!! 😀 I tried this this morning with my exercises and it works really well for scales!! Is there a trick to using it in songs when notes aren’t so linearly laid out ?
I don't understand any of this at all, and I've never understood when anyone talks about feeling where a note is coming from, including "head," "chest," "throat," "mask," "up," "forward" etc or "sending" a sound or note "out". This completely baffles me, and I wonder if this is because I'm on the autism spectrum. In any case, it's so frustrating because obviously others are feeling it, understanding, and getting help, but I'm not at all.
Hi Amber. Thankyou for your comment. Mist people don’t feel it initially and some for a while. It’s quite common initially. Some people never feel it. In that case starting with exercises that are directing the notes and muscles is the best next step. If you are finding you aren’t getting breakthrough then get some lessons - a coach is a game changer. I find you need at least 10-12 regular lessons before you start to feel like you are getting it. I’ve got alit of students who got great breakthrough and felt like nothing was working before. A
@@AngiesVocals I always struggle when I sing High notes especially when I have the mic , I Feel Nervous because of lack of knowledge but thanks to you and this video I now learn and understand how to sing In High notes....That singing High notes is not pushing but rolling in inside the Soft Palate....Again Thank You❤️
I'll try, if I get higher this way, but I guess, I already do this. But it does'nt really help, if you have a naturally deep voice and try to create a belting sound on your highest notes, which are for a mezzo comfortable and therefore easy to belt. But for me it is almost impossible to sing it without pressure, not because it is high, but because of the special quality of the sound. I hope, my explanation did'nt sound to weard. My english is not that good.
Thank you. I have problems with that twang thing. I'm older now and I'm wondering if it is an age thing. Been singing all my life with a powerful voice, then did 7 years of classical training as a soprano. Now back to jazz and I'm noticing the problems I'm having re-adapting. I noticed you didn't sing very high in this demonstration. I was able to do that, but it's usually when I sing above my break I get problems. I can never get a smooth transition and note tends to thin out a bit (too classical sounding). Do you know what I mean?
Thanks for your comment. Yes often when people switch from classical back it can be quite an adjustment. There’s a few things going on there learning to transition. I normally like my clients to be able to mix through to D6 for woman and D-E5 for men - might need some individual feedback for this one. It’s a placement and resonance thing.
This is quiet abstract in a way, but somehow my notes sound more like what I want them to sound when I keep them in that area. Can anyone elaborate? Thank you!
@@theoriginaljean3917 sure. Great question. We are aiming for your resonance space and reducing manipulation and tongue tension that can affect tonal quality and voice. What specifically would you like to know?
The lower high notes should be forward and the higher high notes should be in the soft pallet or it doesn't matter, roll up everytime when it's hard for me to sing?
Hi. So everyone feels it a little differently - some people feel it all in the soft palette and back of throat others feel it forward and back - i think the big thing is to not be thinking up and down. Your voice knows where it wants to go so when you start to let it lead you it unlocks and shows you the way. Also dropping the back of the tongue can really open up the higher notes also.
How do i actually place the high notes backwards without muffling the sound…cause if i go backwards it’s sounds like a muffled high note…when i do head voice(it feels backwards) it’s very powerful though…but when i try to belt the head voice note…it still sounds like head voice but whiny and bright but muffled. So its harder. (I have been working on mixed voice for 7 months too) im not sure
There is a mix of both front and back at the save time. Most people focus on one or the other but it needs both at the same time. You may need to add some phyrangeal in (nasty) or try some fry to neutralise the larynx. Let me know how you go.
@@AngiesVocals there’s some videos on my channel that i posted of me singing…its a little old now but can you check them out to see if im doing it right?
drive.google.com/file/d/1DXqXzAjGWlSXSFUIkONT_Uy8D2RMj_YB/view?usp=drivesdk I want to release the Gospel song The Holy City in all platforms by high notes like seriosa. I have sung 177 national anthems in UA-cam IG FB and I can add more until all countries in the world or Vatican.
Hi Richard. That’s quite normal for a lot of people. You might find some of the foundational videos a good start or our course that has 8 modules - with lots of resources, info sheets and warmups.
Sorry, still super abstract for me. Like aren't there specific muscles controlling resonance? What are they and exactly what do I do with them? I don't feel "resonance" at all whether I'm singing high or low. Like what should I do with my tongue? What should I do with my larnyx? I have no problem connecting vocal ranges seamlessly with a generic vowel sound, but changing vowel sounds are impossible in the mixed and upper ranges without serious sacrifice to tonal quality.
Most people don't necessarily feel resonance when they sing - you will get familiar with it as you explore your spaces more - it sounds like you are stuck on doing vowel exercises and need to transition to singing lyrics and sections of songs - ugly singing helps with this - some people never 'feel' the resonance - resonance is a space where the sound travels in - the muscles are related to the throat and other areas which that can effect the quality of the sound and resonance. The tongue and larynx positioning is different depending on what area of your voice you are developing - this is not the kind of thing that can be guided for you specifically from a general video - It sounds like you might need to look at getting some 1 on1 coaching to help you through these areas of your voice. You've got some great questions.
@@AngiesVocals thanks I appreciate reply. I have worked on songs a bunch, but find technique work doesn't really translate to them much. I've looked into coaching but it is way, way too expensive for me. I've had cheaper lawyers
So basically it's not that thenotes in the cords are going up or down, but the sensation we have in our head regarding the frequency? If I start lower to upper range, then the feeling is from forward to back of my mouth, and then up? And viceversa? I never sang propperly, I just play instruments but I know I can sing, just I don't have the right techniques and suffer from severe debilitating anxiety disorder (can't breath and stay in good posture ever).
Yes the sensation moves as we move to lower and higher registers. There is generally 2-3 sensations going on at one time but as you go higher generally it feels like it’s going forward and backward at the same time. Sorry to hear about your anxiety challenges.
@@AngiesVocals I'm slowly learning to hit my higher note, while feeling it effortless, thanks to your other video ''3 Tips for hitting the high notes'', now I feel the ''rolling back'' sensation instead of reaching high! It's between an F#5 / G5, but sometimes I hit an A5 for a second and it disappears, but I understand that with practice, I'll be able to send less air and hit that A5 and stay there doing vibrato (but I still don't know how to do vibrato haha).
Thank You.
So cool ❤
This is true, I love your lessons
I will follow because I often can't get high notes
Thank you Angie ❤
My vocal coach compared the back and forth reflection of the sound waves in the open space lf the mouth to the physics that lead up to a rocket launching. I may not have described it as well as she did but it sort of clicked for me.
Life changing advice!!! Thank you so much
Happy to help :)

Glad you found it helpful! 👍🎶

I find when I'm super relaxed I can hit high notes a whole lot easier than when I try to force it.
Yes that’s great.
I feel the lower chest voice buzzing at my lips, then as I go up I feel it go back, but then at the very top of my range it does feel like it goes up
It may feel that way in the higher ranges. It’s all about whether it stays connected.
This is amazing!
So glad you love it!! 🎉🎶
Thank you great content
Thankyou. So glad you like it.

Awesome - Welcome to our channel.
Really helpful
That’s great to hear.
@@UtheGuru right. That’s great. So edgy/ugly singing can help with feeling where the notes want to sit. Bend over, tongue out.
Thank you 🙏
Pleasure :)

Thanks. Love that..
Thankyou for your comment. These might apply more to the higher register if you are finding belting easier. ?
This was awesome . How to connect for a vocal lesson ??

Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
@@AngiesVocals thank you for your answer. D6 seems awfully high. I would normally take that in head voice.
@@ailishbethd4033 it’s just mastery over all the bridges/range for freedom - sooo fun!! And easier than you think,

What specifically would you like to know?
nice teaching 3:27 😌
Thanks :) 😊
gosh man..
@@AngiesVocals thank you for your answer
I wasn’t singing with that much support though cause i was tired lol
And i feel some high notes go in my nose and my nose buzz a lot and the forehead tickles a little
“Head voice” definition makes us fool when thinking the placement of thr note I think, in that case…
So true!!

I didn’t understand a word of this
