Great video and tips. One tip that is missing though; Goji berries produce far more fruit when you have more than on variety planted to allow cross pollination! Back in my early years of gardening, I had a single goji berry bush for around 6 years and it never seemed to produced more than around 4-20 berries each year (some years I got more lucky than others). Then I read that they do better when they are able to cross pollinate. So I bought a second variety. The first year the newer plant didn't actually produce any fruit. They year after that, I was absolutely stunned and shocked to see both the new and orrigional plant produce easily in excess of 300 berries per plant. Well worth knowing if you are ready to get rid of your plant because of poor production like I was!

That is an awesome pointer. I thought mine were self fertile. I bought a second variety but planted it too far away yo cross pollinate. I will try some splits this year and plant them closer and check out the result.

Chinese workers building the railway lines in the U.S. planted goji as they went. I've got some started from cutting that I took from a particular tasty goji found near old railway.

My Taiwanese in-laws taught me to dry my own Gogi berries and camomile flowers. They make a delicious tea in colder months and remind me of summer. In Taiwan they call it “Go-ghee”, more of a ghee sound than Jee sound, and it’s a big part of Chinese medicine. My Gogi grow wonderfully in the Pacific Northwest.

Great vid, thanks for all the tips. One thing to watch out for is the tomato and tobacco hornworms. They are the larvae of a hawkmoth, and my plant was almost destroyed by only two caterpillars. I didn't realize at the time that goji is a cousin of tomatoes, potatoes and peppers.

I have 6 or 7 plants in production. What I don’t eat fresh, I feed to my daughter’s chickens. My mother used to strip the leaves and make a bone soup with it. It’s bitter, but it’s sort of medicinal for us Asian folks. Don’t need to fertilize it either. It is a very tough plant with deep roots. Once established, it can go a long time without watering.

Haha I just couldn't remember what I'd bourght from the shop. But yes it is goji. It's a real spindley looking shrub. I've got it In a container doesn't seem to be doing great, but heard tomato feed is good. And might mix in some sand for drainage.

Appreciated the pruning thoughts. Thank you.
I was thinking that the new plants that start in my yard were from berries that dropped from the plant or from birds dropping them because there does not seem to be roots attached to the main plant. The roots just go straight down and once I dig them out they do not come back again. I have been growing them for 5 years and always have lots in the freezer to have with breakfast on granola.

I live in zone 6 on a ridge that gets a lot of wind. Can they take that? In the winter it's mighty cold. Should I put up something to block the wind in the winter?
Also, for free tie ups, use bread twisties. They are plastic coated with wire in them. I have used them hold up small fence on a gate to keep baby goats in and after 3 years they're still holding up great. Twist several together to get the length needed.

Yeah, I’m in northeast Indiana, have never pruned my gojis, and realized they were hiding all my lillies, butterfly bushes and other bloomers. Ugh.... I’m such a bad plant mom. I think I am going to keep them indoors this time until I have a thriving root system & then transplant them. Hopefully that gives em a better chance

I only had 3 leaves on my goji berry bush when I got it and within a couple months that monster was over 7 feet tall. I can't believe what I read because they're self pollinating and I literally had thousands of berries every year including the first. I don't water it no where near as much as anything else and it's in very well drained soil hooked up to the trellis I made (I have to prune it way back right before winter and have never fertilized it).

And have used the swamp cooler pads ( used) for mulch. Can you give me any clues? I've never eaten a berry. Would like to see what it tastes like. Thanks.
