full admission, the car mechanic one gives me schadenfreude because almost that exact scenario happened to my partner and i. check engine light came on and the car started acting weird: first place we went to said the whole engine was bust and we Had to replace it but were better off buying a new car. second place said the engine was probably bust but they would Do Us A Favor and check. before that appointment came around we found a third shop (one-man operation mechanic) who said "that sounds like your spark plugs" ran the codes, popped the hood, went "oh yeah its your spark plug, i can replace that for the cost of the part and an hour's rate" and had us in and out in like fifteen minutes for $80. and since it didn't need the whole hour, he just rolled over the rate cost every time we had a small thing come up until it evened out. car ran great for another like, four or five years until age and mileage caught up to it. when we had to replace it, we kept in the same general family so we could stick with the guy who had become Our Mechanic. but we KNEW the "your whole engine's bad" diagnostics were garbage. they thought we were ignorant enough we could be taken advantage of, and/or they were too lazy to diagnose the real problem. it was SO frustrating to deal with. predatory mechanics are such shitty people.

full admission, the car mechanic one gives me schadenfreude because almost that exact scenario happened to my partner and i. check engine light came on and the car started acting weird: first place we went to said the whole engine was bust and we Had to replace it but were better off buying a new car. second place said the engine was probably bust but they would Do Us A Favor and check. before that appointment came around we found a third shop (one-man operation mechanic) who said "that sounds like your spark plugs" ran the codes, popped the hood, went "oh yeah its your spark plug, i can replace that for the cost of the part and an hour's rate" and had us in and out in like fifteen minutes for $80.
and since it didn't need the whole hour, he just rolled over the rate cost every time we had a small thing come up until it evened out. car ran great for another like, four or five years until age and mileage caught up to it. when we had to replace it, we kept in the same general family so we could stick with the guy who had become Our Mechanic.
but we KNEW the "your whole engine's bad" diagnostics were garbage. they thought we were ignorant enough we could be taken advantage of, and/or they were too lazy to diagnose the real problem. it was SO frustrating to deal with. predatory mechanics are such shitty people.
