I got mine as a gift and I love them!! I was given both sets of the Oasis. I travel quite a bit and I’m always on the lookout for a set of crochet hooks that I can just toss in my travel bag. These fit the bill perfectly and I’m happy to say that they work beautifully for me. The person that gifted them to me said she got some of the last ones and I’m so happy she did because I see now they are sold out on a lot of sites.
As a 22nd anniversary gift, my husband bought me the knit pro mellow set. I agree, it is absolutely gorgeous, however, 2 of the hooks I have already had to glue the hooks back in to the shaft. They separated with the first use. So far, they are holding up, but after spending $90+ on the set, I was very disappointed that this happened to begin with. (I was literally in tears because my hubby really researched and took the time to search out a local shop and buy this set for such a special occasion and I couldn’t fathom returning them). I haven’t used the other hooks yet so hopefully this doesn’t happen with them all.
I am so very sorry to hear this Brenda! I would definitely contact the manufacturer of these and give them a chance to make this right. This certainly should NOT have happened. Perhaps also contact the store where you purchased these and let them know as well. Please let me know how this turns out. You are right. This should not be your experience after such a large investment. My email is bonniebay@me.com.
@@sibyllapinski9875 I didn''t realize that the small pad that comes with the set if for helping to tighten and/or loosen the screws to help prevent that. But yes, only time will tell how well these will hold up.
I just got the Mellow set yesterday and so far have only used the 5.0 and 5.5mm hooks. I have to say though, these are fast becoming my favourite hooks. I'm planning to try this set over many many 😁 hours ❤ to confirm this. [Pevious favourite was the Etimo Rose].
Bonnie I did but these hooks had a problem with the hook loosening but I had no idea that the little leather patch that comes with the kit is to use to tighten the hook yo the handle I did and now have no problem. Love these hooks.
When I started crocheting over 50 years ago I never even heard of Susan Bates in the stores available to me. Without really knowing the different holds I gravitated to the pencil hold. I've tried the Susan Bates crochet hooks. I probably can't crochet as fast. Unless I change to the knife hold, it's very difficult for me to crochet. I respect your opinion. It would be a pretty dull world if we all did everything the same way. The hooks are beautiful. I'm a sucker for all things beautiful.
I crochet since 25 years and i can't use the knife method, I've tried but it's so difficult for me! Always do the pencil method even if for tricky things like closing the head of an amigurumi, i can use the knife version for having more grip as i have to hold the yarn, the head and the hook in two hands XD
Yes indeed! We all have different needs and preferences where crochet hooks are concerned. There are many other beautiful styles available to suite just about everyone.
I have the mellow set and they are so beautiful! I love wood and the warmth it brings and I love steel like the Clover hooks, so I get the best of both worlds!!
Thank you for a great review…I have both sets and like them very much. I used Susan Bates for 50 years but couldn’t use them when they added the soft handle. My hands are small and I use the knife hold. The soft handle hits me in the palm and wrist. I had to switch to the clover soft touch because they were shorter. They are tapered so they were not my favorite. The Knit Pro Oasis hooks are shorter and I love them.
Bonnie Bay thank you so much for doing the reviews. I have looked at the Mellow set many times but was afraid to spend the money and possibly not like them. Now that you showed them and really went over the details I may just have to gift myself a set. All I own is Susan Bates so this would be a real step up. Looking forward to more honest reviews of anything to do with crochet. 😊
Thank you, Bonnie. Interesting review & good timing for me!? I recently hunted down a set or 2 of my fave sizes of Susan Bates crochet hooks with the soft grip I’ve not used before - especially because YOU get such beautiful results & have a fast technique😊. I ‘m just waiting for - an H size you call them - I finally converted to metric mms in Australia after using inches in UK! Sooo, now I am not disappointed because of knowing about the Gold ones having the step down join to the shaft & NO thumb dent I ❤️, LOL. I I do like short hook shafts so the beaut rosegold/bronze that also look so gorgeous will not tempt my budget to be upset. So I am V grateful, bless you. Hi, Bonnie! I'm Braziliam and in Brazil all the best crochet hooks and knitting needles are imported. And we pay a lot of taxes for imported materials. Just yesterday I orded the Mellow set! Coincidence or not, today I found your video! I also have the Suzan Bates hooks (except the interchangeable one) and I really love them. I bought the sets at Amazon. They were not expensive despite the taxes. But I payed about 130 dollars for the Mellow set at a store in São Paulo. It's not available at Anazon. The interchangeable set is not available in Brazil. I 'm anxious to receive them and hope I 'll love them as much as I love Suzan Bates hooks. Your review was very interesting. Thanks a lot.
You may not need the interchangeable set if you already have the Mellow set. So sorry for all those taxes. We feel it too here in the US, but I realize that international shipping is even more so.
I use both boye and bates hooks when I crochet. Now my thoughts about the Knitpro hooks, they're very beautiful and would make a lovely gift for someone, but I really love their zing hooks. Though the smaller hooks in the black case are very beautiful.
I am just getting used to the Susan Bates. I find that I like them because I make shawls using fingerling yarn (I use a 2.5 to a 4.0 hook) and some yarns are not rolled so that leaves 4 strands to crochet. The Susan bates are great, but don’t have some of the hook sizes that I need. I like them but I have really small hands and find I am not getting used to them (I am 74 now, crochet since I was 8) and have a set of Hero hooks that I have used for a very long time. But I am hopeful my mind will get used to them as it is a lot easier to use with the unrolled yarn.
I’m a life long Susan Bates user myself. I use the pencil hold method so I have been apprehensive about trying the newer crochet hooks due to the size of the handle. Would love input from other pencil-hold users to see if you were able to adapt to the “fatter” handles
I hold my hook like a pencil and like Milward, no handle, metal hooks. Cheap, no frills and my favorite. Takes all sorts to make a world 🤷♀️. Is there a pattern for your beautiful crochet vest?, it looks very nice.
Thanks or this review. The only concern I have is that the shank seems to be a bit short. I learned to crochet and crocheted for years with the Boye hooks, but I have Susan Bates now, too. The only caution I would impart is to not interchangeably use Boye and Susan Bates (inline) hooks on the same project!
@@bbsamazon I do agree about using Boye and Susan Bates hooks in the same project! I personally get different gauges even when the hook size is the same!😫😫😫😂
The reason the box wasn't closing is because the 2 middle crochet hook tips weren't pushed in all the way at the bottom so they were hitting the handle
This was a nice intro, and these really look so beautiful. I would be interested in trying, but it would likely be a disappointment. Inline hooks seem to snag yarn and slow me down.
I get that. The same thing happens to me if I use the tapered hooks. It's all about our muscle memory that becomes established in our hands that determines which hooks work best for us!
I'm using a Susan Bates hook for a blanket I started and am having a hard time. I'm a Clover hook girl, but my set must be in a project bag that I haven't come across, so found the Bates set and said why not!!😂 Now I'm 😞

Same here! The needle portion on these KnitPros is the same and I’m enjoying the info hooks very much!
