It's been a year since we moved to the Japanese countryside on one of Japan's remote Southern islands.
To get here,we started our journey from Nara prefecture on the island of Honshu and headed South to Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu island.
From there,we hopped on a ferry bound for the remote island of Tanegashima which we currently live on.
Before we moved to Tanegashima,we had been living on the main island of Okinawa for a number of years.
Our journey from Nara to Kagoshima included a number of stops along the way.
First stop was Onomichi city in Hiroshima prefecture where we visited the famous Senkoji temple and enjoyed Onomichi Ramen. As it was around the middle of March, some of the "Sakura" cherry blossom trees were in bloom.
The next evening we stayed in Shimonoseki city where we enjoyed the local "Fugu" or Puffer fish for dinner.
The following morning we crossed from "Honshu" island to the smaller Southern island of "Kyushu" and made our way to "Beppu" city which is in Oita prefecture.
The area around Beppu city is known for having literally thousands of Onsen Hot Springs.
We enjoyed the local Chicken Tempura for lunch as well as a stroll around one of the many natural Hot Springs before driving South to Miyazaki prefecture and the area around "Hyuga" city where we'd be staying for a couple of nights.
Yumi and I managed to surf and we all enjoyed the local Fish and meat dishes on offer as well as more time at the Onsen Spring Baths.
After leaving Miyazaki,we made the relatively short drive down to Kagoshima port to catch our ferry.
Bound for the remote island of Tanegashima, where we live now.
We share with you some of the experiences, hardships and challenges which we've faced since arriving year a year ago
Especially with regards to issues with our rental property and the reality of living and dealing with all the creatures, insects and bugs which are abundant in the Japanese countryside.

The centipedes like wet and shaded areas, people tend to kill them, but they actually eat a lot of other bugs, so it might cause those to increase in numbers. Plant some lavender, peppermint, thyme, chrysanthemums or marigolds around the house to keep them away, they don't like the scent of those, just like other bugs. Also, tea tree or clove oil, lavender, thyme, peppermint or eucalyptus oils are good repellents for them, so applying those in areas they get in, like drains, attic etc. is useful. If you have some ash, spreading it around flower beds and food plots is good too, they seem to hate it. 😉
