Taemin never called himself the Korean Michael Jackson, but he mentioned more than once that he was inspired by MJ since very young age. In my opinion those inspirations are best visible in his songs Danger and Want.
Yeah like he is even kinda ashamed whenever people call him having the moves of MJ bec he respects him too much to be even labeled as the Korean MJ and often says that he still has a lot to learn. He really is a humble artist that’s why he’s very open to experimenting different concepts no matter how recognized he is in SK and globally. There are lots of good dancers in kpop but I can confidently say that his experience and wisdom in creating music & art elevates him as an artist vs others.
I think any praise/hype for Taemin in never overstated. Personally I'd point to him if someone asked for some of the best in kpop. I also love that no matter what fandom you "belong" to, you love and respect Taemin...now that's some power lol.
Yes, The King and our One And Only Ace Taemin!!! I really appreciate your reaction. To give you some info Taemin debuted at the age of 14 (almost 15) with SHINee in 2008 and he was already a main dancer of the group! His dancing skills are basically out of this world and he was self taught until he joined SM Entertainment (his agency). When he debuted solo in 2014 with song Danger (a huge tribute to MJ, you should definitely check this out) he was already a seasoned artist and regarded as one of the best dancers in K-pop. But the best thing about Taemin is that he’s incredibly ambitious and creative - he has a very clear vision of what he wanna do musically and in what artistic direction he wanna go. He’s considered a blueprint when it comes to solo artists, everyone in the business respects him for who he is (he’s a very kind and charming person) and for what he’s achieved. YES, the Studio Choom performance of "Advice" is phenomenal. Taemin infuses a lot more little details in the choreo than the MV. This is typical of Taemin. It's also shot in 4K so not only do you get to see the entire choreo, but the quality is top-notch.

In Advice he definitely upgraded his sound to include more of a trap influence in the beat, but he always delivers on the vocals. If you want to see a more MJ-inspired performance, I’d look to his solo debut “Danger” or “MOVE”, which was an incredibly popular and influential song in Korea. I’d also recommend checking out SHINee as a group when you have the chance, as they’re all amazing together. If you want to go back to their debut days with “Replay” in 2008, you can see a baby 14-year-old Taemin dancing his ass off, lol. Their more recent 2021 release, “Don’t Call Me”, is also worth checking out (it came after a 2 year hiatus during which 3 of the members were serving in the military) ☺️☺️

Thank you for this reaction and welcome to T-Pop (Taemin Pop)! Taemin is the most unique and unusual Kpop artist in the industry. Like SHINee, his music is distinct from the rest of Kpop. He and SHINee slide seamlessly in, between, and through just about every genre of music you can think of, even to the point of mixing genres to create a new, experimental sound. One of SHINee's latest songs, "Don't Call Me" marries Hip-Hop with R&B & Classical creating a very distinct sound which topped the charts in 2020. Although Michael Jackson is one of Taemin's inspirations, so too were Usher, Rain (1st gen Idol), and several others. Taemin was fascinated by MJ's "Smooth Criminal" and at 10, he began to copy his favorite dance moves in front of his bedroom mirror. By the time he was 11, he attended an Saturday open audition with SM. Only six idols out of thousands each year EVER made it through those auditions. Taemin was one of them. In 2008, at the age of 14, he debuted with the legendary 2nd gen. trendsetters of Kpop, SHINee, and the rest is history. Taemin went on to debut four times in three generations of Kpop. In 2019, he was the first one asked to join a new "super" group, Super M, comprised of some of the best of the best of SM. He is a MASTER at popping, locking, and isolations. He can literally pop each individual muscle of his body -- including fingers. Plus his speed and fluidity are unmatched. The man just flows like water or liquid silver. But it doesn't stop just there. His concepts and creativity are just as unique and inventive like dancing on a custom, 45-degree slanted stage and 3-tiered slanted stage, dancing bound in straps and blindfolded, etc. Concepts like Stockholm syndrome ("Criminal"), Plato's Theory of Forms ("IDEA"), Genesis 3 of the Bible ("Want") and the deadly sins ("Famous") are things only Taemin would dream of doing. His 2021 mini-album "Advice" is a vocal feast for the ears and demonstrates how masterfully Taemin can use his voice to play with his music. Thanks for your reaction! You've gotten a lot of comments about his dancing/discography, so I'll talk a little bit about the lyrics, which can be a little bit confusing at first. Advice mostly is a response to people who have given Taemin a lot of hate throughout his career, and a way to break out of the stigmatization and do it his way. Some key points are when he talks about "destroying the torso you were chasing after", he is referring to his peony tattoo on his waist, there was a lot of controversy when he got is because he was seen as "ruining his body" or looks as an idol that people admired. In previous videos and performances, he had to hide it, but now he is showing it off as a way of being proud. For similar messages, I recommend Famous (where he talks about the dangers that come with fame), and Pretty Boy (a duo with Kai where he talks about the stigmatization of looks) In addition, a lot of his fashion choices were criticized for not being masculine enough, but Taemin has stated that he wanted to embrace genderless fashion (there are some interviews of it). Advice was a way to respond back against that type of stigmatization. In particular, this video shows it off really well with his long hair, fish nets, skirt, and crop top (which he pulls off amazingly). For similar fashion, I recommend Move (slow heavy synth song that is one of his most famous) or Danger (debut song, easily recognizable Michael Jackson influences)

Yes! I love seeing new Taemin reactions! I can't wait for you to see more of his stuff. If you love his moves, definitely check out his performance videos (like Studio Choom) or dance practices along with the MVs (if you don't mind having longer reactions with two videos, that is). He definitely has his own dance style that is very distinctive, and the amount of detail and body control in all of his choreos is insane. He is an Artist in every sense of the word, with his own vision of what he wants to be as a singer and performer, and his most recent releases in particular (Criminal, Idea, and Advice) have really been about him growing into that vision. Totally subscribing for more Taemin and maybe eventually Shinee reactions! Him and his group are absolute legends in kpop and inspired so many other idols in the industry to go into that field too! Taemin is the idol of idols and ace of kpop. And yes people gave him the nickname MJ of kpop but he never called himself that, he just always mentioned how MJ is his idol and that he inspired him to start dancing. Taemin is a self taught dancer and auditioned for his company SM when he was only 11 years old. He then debuted in Shinee at only 14 years old. I think you can't go wrong with any Taemin MV because they are all good. I would only recommend to maybe also watch the dance practice along with the MVs because his choreographies are always insane! Especially for Criminal, Idea and Move. Advice doesn't have a dance practice but the Studio Choom version is really good! Sorry for the long comment I just always get really excited about people discovering Taemin 😊 Thank you for this reaction. I'm a 57 yr old Black woman and I've been a Taemin fan for quite a while. More so during his solo career. He started as a Kpop trainee when he was around 12yr old and he captured the higher ups with his dancing at that age. He is looked up to very much by other kpop idols because of his dancing skills. Taemin loves having female dancer which if you've noticed most kpop artists/groups mostly use male backup dancers. One of his dance choreo that everyone tries to copy is to the song "Move." I would recommend watching his dance practice video for that song so you can see the entrie routine. His moves are so precise and controlled in the routine that even though it was done some time ago, it's still considered amazing. There is also a compilation video of different routines from his concerts that is really good. He is known for his T pose that you saw at the end of the video.
I see "Advice" as a continuation of the themes within Taemin's Never Gonna Dance Again album trilogy -- "2 Kids," "Criminal" and "Idea." With "Criminal" and "Idea," Taemin talks about being involved in a toxic relationship -- not necessarily a romantic relationship, but a metaphor for his relationship with fame -- in which he agrees to be manipulated almost to the point of being destroyed in order to become the artist we see today. But in the end of "Idea" we see him become free from the box everyone wants to put him in and he comes to terms with his role as an idol. He has now formed his own "Idea" about himself and what it means to be an idol, etc. As Taemin explained during his VLive event for "Advice", "Advice" is like the end to the first chapter in his life, and the beginning of his second chapter, which will be after he completes his military service. (He enlisted May 30 and he will be on hiatus for the next 18 months as he fulfills his duty to his country.) The song seems to be his way of saying I am done caring to everyone who judged him and all those haters who spread rumors and misinformation about him. "Advice" is showing that he is now free and confident to be himself, breaking stereotypes and now only listening to himself. Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known by fans as the Korean Michael Jackson, not only because of his dancing, but also for his aura, stage presence and skill level. That is also why, as one of the top two performers in the industry, he was also made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO/SuperM -- who is Taemin's best friend since trainee days -- being the other top idol.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends. And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. In "Advice" he's basically saying, "Stop trying to put me in a box, in which I'll never fit in." He is also speaking to everyone that says he's getting old, that he's just a Michael Jackson wannabe that doesn't sell a lot of albums because he tries too hard to be edgy, etc. He's rebelling against all those people who are constantly advising him to make more mainstream music or to follow the traditional Kpop idol style in order to boost his sales and his popularity. However, as Taemin is making clear in "Advice," that is not who he is and he will never be "normal" or "mainstream" and he is OK with that. In the scenes where you see him covered in ink, I think that is supposed to be him showing everyone how he is no longer the "unstained," cute maknae everyone wants to think of him as. (The large tattoo on his hip is real. Hence why in the lyrics he says, "I destroy the torso that you were chasing after." He's tired of people thinking they even have a say in what he does with his body.) This song was specifically designed to not be like anything he has ever done before. He plays the piano, he raps, he shows off his falsetto notes, etc. which is different than what we often hear and see from him. He intentionally used this song to prove that he isn't one type of singer. People often think of Taemin as a sultry vocalist that sings in a breathy comfortable less dynamic style. So, with this song he wants to prove to everyone that he can be unpredictable and try new things. Yet again, you can't put him in a box or tell him who to be. Everything you see in this MV is 100% Taemin. Everything that Taemin's haters like to point out about him and say are reasons why he shouldn't be held to such high esteem, I find completely ridiculous. I don't think that anyone who actually knows him would ever say he has played it safe at anytime in his career. If you think he is only one dimensional, and that he is trying to be anything other than himself, then you really don't know Taemin. Everything he does is different, out there and definitely not safe. It's always uniquely Taemin, and he couldn't do it any other way. Also, because Taemin is a member of SHINee, none of his songs are ever like anything you have every heard or seen before from him. It will always have a new beat, style and sound. As SM's experimental boy group, SHINee is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend, and that includes the members' solo work. With every new song Taemin produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from him in any of his songs, even on the same album, and yet, it still will be uniquely Taemin-like. Which is another example of how you can never put him in a box or expect anything from him. :D Another theme in "Advice" is about how Taemin is embracing his androgynous side -- but on his own terms -- which I think is a continuation of the message in his "Move" MV. As mentioned before, early in his career when Taemin was growing up in SHINee he was known for his feminine look. The industry thought it was novel and cute to dress Taemin up as a girl and play up his feminine features. It took him a long time to accept that he was known for his looks and to come to terms with the fact that everyone thought of him as a "pretty boy," etc. So, at this point in his career he is making a statement about how he has decided to be himself and no longer care what people think. Music is art and art has no gender. So, that is why in "Advice" you see him wearing hair extensions, fishnets and women's Supreme sports wear, etc. But if you notice, his choreography is very fast paced and sharp which is hyper masculine -- a complete contrast to the "feminine" image people want to give him. You also see him wearing makeup, but it's smeared on his face, as if to say, "people may think of me as a 'Pretty Boy,' but I don't care about looking pretty." In the lyrics he is saying, "It's creepy how people are always looking to cause drama, so stop trying to create scandals in my life that don't really exist. It's all just stories you make up." He's tired of all those people who seem to look for reasons to cause drama, where none really exists.
Where he says "floppy" in the lyrics, I think he's talking about knowing about or hearing firsthand the things people are saying about him, but he is choosing not to pay attention to them because what they're saying is flopping or doesn't hold any weight or have any substance, etc. "Advice" just proves that everytime people try to put Taemin in a box he destroys it and keeps coming back with something more unique and never seen before. I interpret the "One (piece of ) Advice" he is talking about in the lyrics as a reference to the advice he keeps being given about being more mainstream, but he's saying, "stop trying to make me conform to the image you have in your head of who I should be and what I should do" -- in other words, take all that time and effort you have been using to come up with ways to talk about how I don't fit in, etc. and put it to better use. "Follow my own advice" and do something original for once. As a devout Catholic, Taemin often uses Biblical references and metaphors in his songs and MVs. And the crucifixion pose at the end of "Advice" is sort of a signature pose for him. I interpret it to be like he is saying, "And that is the end, this is my final word, take it or leave it, but don't doubt me. I have gave it my all and laid everything I had out there for you," etc. If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing in this MV, just wait until you see him dance live. You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level. And, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Taemin and SHINee. That is why they are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With 13 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he only becomes more magnificent as you follow him through his career. (He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and he is one of the most popular male solo artists, as well as a member of SHINee.) Now after more than a decade, Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles -- he is only 28 -- and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him. Yes, all 5 of the members of SHINee are known for having very distinct voices. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. As SHINee fans will tell you, we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Taemin never called himself the Korean Michael Jackson, but he mentioned more than once that he was inspired by MJ since very young age. In my opinion those inspirations are best visible in his songs Danger and Want.

Yeah like he is even kinda ashamed whenever people call him having the moves of MJ bec he respects him too much to be even labeled as the Korean MJ and often says that he still has a lot to learn. He really is a humble artist that’s why he’s very open to experimenting different concepts no matter how recognized he is in SK and globally. There are lots of good dancers in kpop but I can confidently say that his experience and wisdom in creating music & art elevates him as an artist vs others.
I think any praise/hype for Taemin in never overstated. Personally I'd point to him if someone asked for some of the best in kpop. I also love that no matter what fandom you "belong" to, you love and respect Taemin...now that's some power lol.

Yes, The King and our One And Only Ace Taemin!!! I really appreciate your reaction. To give you some info Taemin debuted at the age of 14 (almost 15) with SHINee in 2008 and he was already a main dancer of the group! His dancing skills are basically out of this world and he was self taught until he joined SM Entertainment (his agency). When he debuted solo in 2014 with song Danger (a huge tribute to MJ, you should definitely check this out) he was already a seasoned artist and regarded as one of the best dancers in K-pop. But the best thing about Taemin is that he’s incredibly ambitious and creative - he has a very clear vision of what he wanna do musically and in what artistic direction he wanna go. He’s considered a blueprint when it comes to solo artists, everyone in the business respects him for who he is (he’s a very kind and charming person) and for what he’s achieved. YES, the Studio Choom performance of "Advice" is phenomenal. Taemin infuses a lot more little details in the choreo than the MV. This is typical of Taemin. It's also shot in 4K so not only do you get to see the entire choreo, but the quality is top-notch.
Thank you for your reaction and I’m glad you enjoyed it! Taemin is a legend and probably one of, if not the best, dancers and performers in kpop as a whole. In Advice he definitely upgraded his sound to include more of a trap influence in the beat, but he always delivers on the vocals. If you want to see a more MJ-inspired performance, I’d look to his solo debut “Danger” or “MOVE”, which was an incredibly popular and influential song in Korea.
I’d also recommend checking out SHINee as a group when you have the chance, as they’re all amazing together. If you want to go back to their debut days with “Replay” in 2008, you can see a baby 14-year-old Taemin dancing his ass off, lol. Their more recent 2021 release, “Don’t Call Me”, is also worth checking out (it came after a 2 year hiatus during which 3 of the members were serving in the military) ☺️☺️

Thank you for this reaction and welcome to T-Pop (Taemin Pop)! Taemin is the most unique and unusual Kpop artist in the industry. Like SHINee, his music is distinct from the rest of Kpop. He and SHINee slide seamlessly in, between, and through just about every genre of music you can think of, even to the point of mixing genres to create a new, experimental sound. One of SHINee's latest songs, "Don't Call Me" marries Hip-Hop with R&B & Classical creating a very distinct sound which topped the charts in 2020.
Although Michael Jackson is one of Taemin's inspirations, so too were Usher, Rain (1st gen Idol), and several others. Taemin was fascinated by MJ's "Smooth Criminal" and at 10, he began to copy his favorite dance moves in front of his bedroom mirror. By the time he was 11, he attended an Saturday open audition with SM. Only six idols out of thousands each year EVER made it through those auditions. Taemin was one of them. In 2008, at the age of 14, he debuted with the legendary 2nd gen. trendsetters of Kpop, SHINee, and the rest is history.
Taemin went on to debut four times in three generations of Kpop. In 2014 he became SM's first-ever male soloist from an active Kpop group. From there, he dropped one to two albums (Korean and Japanese) every year until enlistment. In 2019, he was the first one asked to join a new "super" group, Super M, comprised of some of the best of the best of SM. Although Taemin was the senior artist and had the most experience of the group, he was not the oldest nor the youngest. He was, however, supposed to be the designated leader of the group. However, in true Taemin fashion, to get out of being the leader, he held a VLIVE with the rest of the group to nominate a leader. The other members instantly called out his name, but Taemin declined and nominated the eldest of the group to be leader, stating that he has always been a maknae in SHINee and liked that position. He didn't want to be leader. In that moment, he thwarted management's plans. Not bad for an idol who couldn't sing at debut due to immature vocal cords! Thankfully his two SHINee hyungs, Onew & Jonghyun (two of the very best vocalists of Korea), tutored him in vocal lessons.
Taemin commands only the best for his MVs, choreographers (he does do some of his own + he always tweaks whatever choreo he's given to make it his own), producers, directors, back-up dancers, etc. In fact, he has two crews of BU dancers: Korean and Japanese. Each crew member is either a professional dancer and/or choreographer. Is he the best dancer in Kpop? I think so and so do most Kpop insiders. That is why many in the industry want to work with him. He is a MASTER at popping, locking, and isolations. He can literally pop each individual muscle of his body -- including fingers. Plus his speed and fluidity are unmatched. The man just flows like water or liquid silver. But it doesn't stop just there. His concepts and creativity are just as unique and inventive like dancing on a custom, 45-degree slanted stage and 3-tiered slanted stage, dancing bound in straps and blindfolded, etc. Concepts like Stockholm syndrome ("Criminal"), Plato's Theory of Forms ("IDEA"), Genesis 3 of the Bible ("Want") and the deadly sins ("Famous") are things only Taemin would dream of doing. Lastly, Although Taemin appears extremely intense, fierce, and a monster on stage, he's actually somewhat shy, goofy, and a ball of fluff off-stage, who can also be extremely mischievous and become savage when warranted. This duality in his personality has become renowned throughout Kpop. As one of his idol friends, Ravi of VIXX, stated, "He is tofu with a core of iron. He's also considered the most kind and likeable idols, as he will readily help anyone who asks and readily allows other younger idols to cover his music, telling them not to worry about doing him, but to interpret it on their own and infuse the dance with their own style, as SF9 did in their more recent cover of Taemin's "Move" for a televised competition show.
I would encourage you to continue to explore Taemin's music. It vastly different and interesting. His 2-part 2020 abum, "Never Gonna Dance Again", Acts 1 & 2 is a MASTERPIECE which incudes a storyline which runs through the entire 2 albums beginning with "2 Kids" (Act 1) schism of his ego into 2 separate egos causing a break-up in his mind, as the prologue; "Criminal" (Act 1) the resulting struggle of the two egos depicted as Stockholm syndrome; and "IDEA" (Act 2) the climactic battle and resolution of the two egos portrayed through the concept of Plato's Theory of Forms. His 2021 mini-album "Advice" is a vocal feast for the ears and demonstrates how masterfully Taemin can use his voice to play with his music. There is a LOT to explore (going on 14 years) with both Taemin and SHINee. Happy hunting....

Thanks for your reaction! You've gotten a lot of comments about his dancing/discography, so I'll talk a little bit about the lyrics, which can be a little bit confusing at first. Advice mostly is a response to people who have given Taemin a lot of hate throughout his career, and a way to break out of the stigmatization and do it his way. Some key points are when he talks about "destroying the torso you were chasing after", he is referring to his peony tattoo on his waist, there was a lot of controversy when he got is because he was seen as "ruining his body" or looks as an idol that people admired. In previous videos and performances, he had to hide it, but now he is showing it off as a way of being proud. For similar messages, I recommend Famous (where he talks about the dangers that come with fame), and Pretty Boy (a duo with Kai where he talks about the stigmatization of looks)
In addition, a lot of his fashion choices were criticized for not being masculine enough, but Taemin has stated that he wanted to embrace genderless fashion (there are some interviews of it). Advice was a way to respond back against that type of stigmatization. In particular, this video shows it off really well with his long hair, fish nets, skirt, and crop top (which he pulls off amazingly). For similar fashion, I recommend Move (slow heavy synth song that is one of his most famous) or Danger (debut song, easily recognizable Michael Jackson influences)

Yes! I love seeing new Taemin reactions! I can't wait for you to see more of his stuff. If you love his moves, definitely check out his performance videos (like Studio Choom) or dance practices along with the MVs (if you don't mind having longer reactions with two videos, that is). He definitely has his own dance style that is very distinctive, and the amount of detail and body control in all of his choreos is insane. He is an Artist in every sense of the word, with his own vision of what he wants to be as a singer and performer, and his most recent releases in particular (Criminal, Idea, and Advice) have really been about him growing into that vision.
I recommend: Danger (his solo debut and you can really see the MJ-vibe homage here), Idea, Criminal, Want, Move (absolutely iconic choreography which was groundbreaking for its blurring of gender lines in kpop dances), Press Your Number (performance video #2) and for something different I also recommend the Ace concept video (which was for a song released at the same time as Danger).

Totally subscribing for more Taemin and maybe eventually Shinee reactions! Him and his group are absolute legends in kpop and inspired so many other idols in the industry to go into that field too! Taemin is the idol of idols and ace of kpop.
And yes people gave him the nickname MJ of kpop but he never called himself that, he just always mentioned how MJ is his idol and that he inspired him to start dancing. Taemin is a self taught dancer and auditioned for his company SM when he was only 11 years old. He then debuted in Shinee at only 14 years old.
I think you can't go wrong with any Taemin MV because they are all good. I would only recommend to maybe also watch the dance practice along with the MVs because his choreographies are always insane! Especially for Criminal, Idea and Move. Advice doesn't have a dance practice but the Studio Choom version is really good!

I'm a 57 yr old Black woman and I've been a Taemin fan for quite a while. More so during his solo career. He started as a Kpop trainee when he was around 12yr old and he captured the higher ups with his dancing at that age. He is looked up to very much by other kpop idols because of his dancing skills. Taemin loves having female dancer which if you've noticed most kpop artists/groups mostly use male backup dancers. One of his dance choreo that everyone tries to copy is to the song "Move." I would recommend watching his dance practice video for that song so you can see the entrie routine. His moves are so precise and controlled in the routine that even though it was done some time ago, it's still considered amazing. There is also a compilation video of different routines from his concerts that is really good. He is known for his T pose that you saw at the end of the video.

I see "Advice" as a continuation of the themes within Taemin's Never Gonna Dance Again album trilogy -- "2 Kids," "Criminal" and "Idea." With "Criminal" and "Idea," Taemin talks about being involved in a toxic relationship -- not necessarily a romantic relationship, but a metaphor for his relationship with fame -- in which he agrees to be manipulated almost to the point of being destroyed in order to become the artist we see today. But in the end of "Idea" we see him become free from the box everyone wants to put him in and he comes to terms with his role as an idol. He has now formed his own "Idea" about himself and what it means to be an idol, etc.
As Taemin explained during his VLive event for "Advice", "Advice" is like the end to the first chapter in his life, and the beginning of his second chapter, which will be after he completes his military service. (He enlisted May 30 and he will be on hiatus for the next 18 months as he fulfills his duty to his country.) The song seems to be his way of saying I am done caring to everyone who judged him and all those haters who spread rumors and misinformation about him. "Advice" is showing that he is now free and confident to be himself, breaking stereotypes and now only listening to himself.
Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known by fans as the Korean Michael Jackson, not only because of his dancing, but also for his aura, stage presence and skill level. That is also why, as one of the top two performers in the industry, he was also made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO/SuperM -- who is Taemin's best friend since trainee days -- being the other top idol.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole.
In "Advice" he's basically saying, "Stop trying to put me in a box, in which I'll never fit in." He is also speaking to everyone that says he's getting old, that he's just a Michael Jackson wannabe that doesn't sell a lot of albums because he tries too hard to be edgy, etc. He's rebelling against all those people who are constantly advising him to make more mainstream music or to follow the traditional Kpop idol style in order to boost his sales and his popularity. However, as Taemin is making clear in "Advice," that is not who he is and he will never be "normal" or "mainstream" and he is OK with that.
In the scenes where you see him covered in ink, I think that is supposed to be him showing everyone how he is no longer the "unstained," cute maknae everyone wants to think of him as. (The large tattoo on his hip is real. Hence why in the lyrics he says, "I destroy the torso that you were chasing after." He's tired of people thinking they even have a say in what he does with his body.)
This song was specifically designed to not be like anything he has ever done before. He plays the piano, he raps, he shows off his falsetto notes, etc. which is different than what we often hear and see from him. He intentionally used this song to prove that he isn't one type of singer. People often think of Taemin as a sultry vocalist that sings in a breathy comfortable less dynamic style. So, with this song he wants to prove to everyone that he can be unpredictable and try new things. Yet again, you can't put him in a box or tell him who to be. Everything you see in this MV is 100% Taemin.
Everything that Taemin's haters like to point out about him and say are reasons why he shouldn't be held to such high esteem, I find completely ridiculous. I don't think that anyone who actually knows him would ever say he has played it safe at anytime in his career. If you think he is only one dimensional, and that he is trying to be anything other than himself, then you really don't know Taemin. Everything he does is different, out there and definitely not safe. It's always uniquely Taemin, and he couldn't do it any other way.
Also, because Taemin is a member of SHINee, none of his songs are ever like anything you have every heard or seen before from him. It will always have a new beat, style and sound. As SM's experimental boy group, SHINee is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend, and that includes the members' solo work. With every new song Taemin produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from him in any of his songs, even on the same album, and yet, it still will be uniquely Taemin-like. Which is another example of how you can never put him in a box or expect anything from him. :D
Another theme in "Advice" is about how Taemin is embracing his androgynous side -- but on his own terms -- which I think is a continuation of the message in his "Move" MV. As mentioned before, early in his career when Taemin was growing up in SHINee he was known for his feminine look. The industry thought it was novel and cute to dress Taemin up as a girl and play up his feminine features. It took him a long time to accept that he was known for his looks and to come to terms with the fact that everyone thought of him as a "pretty boy," etc. So, at this point in his career he is making a statement about how he has decided to be himself and no longer care what people think. Music is art and art has no gender. So, that is why in "Advice" you see him wearing hair extensions, fishnets and women's Supreme sports wear, etc. But if you notice, his choreography is very fast paced and sharp which is hyper masculine -- a complete contrast to the "feminine" image people want to give him. You also see him wearing makeup, but it's smeared on his face, as if to say, "people may think of me as a 'Pretty Boy,' but I don't care about looking pretty."
In the lyrics he is saying, "It's creepy how people are always looking to cause drama, so stop trying to create scandals in my life that don't really exist. It's all just stories you make up." He's tired of all those people who seem to look for reasons to cause drama, where none really exists.
Where he says "floppy" in the lyrics, I think he's talking about knowing about or hearing firsthand the things people are saying about him, but he is choosing not to pay attention to them because what they're saying is flopping or doesn't hold any weight or have any substance, etc. "Advice" just proves that everytime people try to put Taemin in a box he destroys it and keeps coming back with something more unique and never seen before.
I interpret the "One (piece of ) Advice" he is talking about in the lyrics as a reference to the advice he keeps being given about being more mainstream, but he's saying, "stop trying to make me conform to the image you have in your head of who I should be and what I should do" -- in other words, take all that time and effort you have been using to come up with ways to talk about how I don't fit in, etc. and put it to better use. "Follow my own advice" and do something original for once.
As a devout Catholic, Taemin often uses Biblical references and metaphors in his songs and MVs. And the crucifixion pose at the end of "Advice" is sort of a signature pose for him. I interpret it to be like he is saying, "And that is the end, this is my final word, take it or leave it, but don't doubt me. I have gave it my all and laid everything I had out there for you," etc.
If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing in this MV, just wait until you see him dance live. You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level.
And, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Taemin and SHINee. That is why they are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With 13 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he only becomes more magnificent as you follow him through his career. (He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and he is one of the most popular male solo artists, as well as a member of SHINee.)
Now after more than a decade, Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles -- he is only 28 -- and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him.
Yes, all 5 of the members of SHINee are known for having very distinct voices. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. As SHINee fans will tell you, we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Each of their voices are that unique -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. SHINee are highly respected for their vocal talent and they are known for the fact that none of the members have a fixed role in the group because they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop".

His concepts are incredible and no other kpop artist is doing it like him. There are lots of talented performers in kpop but his experience & his openness in doing unique concepts every comeback makes him standout. I can definitely say that he is one of the (if not THE) best kpop solo artist out there. He’s a complete and accomplished artist whether you look at his vocals, moves/choreos and concepts.
