Um. Song of the year in my opinion. The more you listen to it. The more addicting it gets. Just. Pure. Epicness. (On a side not please check out criminal too it's bloody good.)
This MV/song exemplifies why Taemin is the King of Kpop. The entire album is a MASTERPIECE. This MV continues the storyline from "2 Kids" (Prologue) and "Criminal" (Act I). Taemin is caught in the prison of his own mind -- heaven and hell. The "silver terminator" represents his present ego that he's trying to change and elevate. They are facing off for the final battle. In "Criminal" we had present ego Taemin holding the emerging new ego Taemin captive. It's a love/hate relationship. The present ego thinks he, himself, can be the messiah achieving the perfect Taemin. It might help if you understand the concept for Act 2 of this album. Taemin stated that it's based upon Plato's philosophical Theory of Forms. While I understand the concept of this philosophical theory, my 18 YO daughter expresses it in writing better than I could, so here is how she explained it: "I think Taemin is chasing after the idea of "Taemin." Just like Plato's world of forms, there is an intrinsic idea of the "identity" of "Taemin." Taemin is chasing after this identity to reach higher levels of "Taemin-ness." Just as we have an idea of a chair, (a throne is considered a type of chair because it has "chairness"), so Taemin has the idea of "Taemin-ness." As Taemin tries to go further in his discovery he realizes that it is impossible to reach true "Taemin-ness" because it's perfect, and perfection is impossible for the flawed human to reach. Only a higher power made the concept of a "chair" or the concept of "Taemin" and only perfection is able to realize them." In other words, Taemin, through this new album, has stepped up a level into a newer and better "Ego" by abandoning and leaving his former "Ego" behind--the Ego who thought he was the messiah or could bring forth the messiah (perfect Taemin) through sheer will alone. We see the struggle between his dark former self trying to hang on and the newly emerging, brighter Ego breaking free into the light through the lyrics, images (light and dark), and dancing. I believe the "bar" scenes are the real Taemin being tormented by the struggle within his own mind. The bright blue-clad Taemin in the heavenly skies is the new ego and the "idea" of Taemin that the real Taemin is trying to achieve...(confused yet?...lol) "The shadow is holding the night and getting darker"…..but…."Inside my heart under, under, under, beautiful silhouettes….sweet voices….you are my messiah" leading him into the light and a new level of Ego and the idea of a new Messiah; a higher power outside of himself. The use of the word "messiah" as the perfect idea to be achieved fits in with Taemin's Catholic worldview. The Hebrew word "Mashiach"(Messiah) means "the anointed one". In the New Testament, Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one, perfect, and a higher power, as illustrated in Plato's forms. He's searching for the Taemin that God intended him to be -- Perfect Taemin. However, he's being held back by his present Ego who thinks he can do this on his own. That is his struggle -- pride and arrogance, or let go and let God lead. Intuitively he knows that perfection is "beyond the limit of realization" and he grasps for "your shadow I finally found" and "throw myself into the ideal," he understands that "all the colored emotions inside become the unlimited range." Basically, they can low squat with bottom to the floor with their feet being flat. Other races we can't and do a low squat on our tiptoes or ball of feet. Taemin is known as one of the best dancers in K-pop for a number of years now. If IDEA blows your mind (mine too) then CRIMINAL will do that too.
