In this video I show you How to install Herringbone subway tile in a shower, or a tuba area. I talk about how to figure out the layout and how to deal with the corners so that the grout lines match and don't run off. I explain in some detail how I figured out what all my cuts would be by doing a dry lay of the tile. Also many other useful tips to installing a great looking subway tile in a herringbone pattern.

You don't know how happy I am to find your channel, Sal. Several years ago I bought boxes of regular-size subway tiles to install a white herringbone pattern for my bathroom to be grouted in a dark mocha color so the pattern would be dramatic pop in design. My handyman was set to do it, but circumstances caused him to have to move across the country so I thought my options were (1) to grout subway tiles in a boring straight horizontal pattern or (2) buy the sheets of smaller herringbone pattern sold at Home Depot, but with the darker grout I thought would be too busy looking. Then I found your channel! So now I think I can tackle my original dream myself albeit 4 years later. I feel truly inspired. I just need a laser level. Thank you for sharing your talent.

A while ago I came across one video here on UA-cam talking about laying tiles, what is right and what is wrong, who prefers what method etc and that same craftsman mentioned himself and Sal as an “absolute authority” (his words) in regard to tile work. I did agree. Although both use quite different approaches both deserve that title. Now, I have been watching Sal’s videos for a while and always preferred Sal’s methods with full respect for the others. After this video my opinion is officially on Mr DiBlasi’s side of scale. Nothing less then a tile Ninja in a foggy night! And I am telling this whole story just in case someone else is doubt! As always thanks for sharing Sal! 👽

Sal, great videos. Thank you for all that you do. I actually started a flooring company after apprenticing under a setter. I had to adjust many practices to better follow standards and went out on my own to make that happen.
One thing I never encountered much of was the best way to compensate for edge buildup where the backer board meets the drywall after the lip. Could you do an explanation please.
Also, I like the way you do layouts. Some more details about curb layout or niche layout when you are just looking at open studs.

Sal, yet another 'home-run'... At age 72 I'm still doing DIY stuff and your channel is my go to regarding tiling. I was wondering if it wouldn't be easier to use a tile layout app in lieu of a layout on the floor? I'm going to attempt to do a basketweave at 45 degrees using 4x8 wall tile and am using Precision Tile Pro (a monthly license) to do the layout. With this tool I can literally move the entire layout around on the screen to eliminate any slivers and small cuts. I can also manipulate the grout size to optimize the layout if needed.
