How to tile a herringbone wall

How to install diagonal Herringbone plank porcelain tile on a wall to create a feature behind a freestanding tub. This plank tile was installed on a diagonal on a herringbone pattern. Plank tiles are considered large format tiles, these tiles were 6”x24” and are made to look like a pickled wood. a leveling system was used to help install a lippage free flat wall. A leveling system can be very helpful with large format tiles to achieve a better finish. When installing tile, and especially a herringbone pattern it is critical to stay square and true. if the tile becomes skewed, the grout lines will either stat to open or narrow, or even both, making it impossible to keep the corners aligned.

Sal reminds me of a mentor I had in the trade about 20 years ago. He was from Poland though and he was very good at tile, like Sal is. Thanks for your uploads, I just recently got back into tile and Sal is my go to for up to date knowledge from someone that know the proper way to tile.

Ive done a bit of tile with much help from you and others online. I must say you make it look so easy. It is stressful for me, a rough carpenter, to do jobs like this. I tend to rush and my jobs are sloppy (during ... Not in the end). You can't stress enough how important layout and planning is on a tile job, especially herringbone. I appreciate your dedication to the craft... And would hire you in a heart beat to do my bathroom in Michigan, whatever the cost. Keep up the good work. I'm doing herringbone on my shower wall with large tiles.... 12x36. I imagine the size of the tile makes a difference, but you make this look so much easier than it is! Granted, I'm a a DIY'er and never tiled a wall before.

I wonder if a scrap cheater tile with a 45 cut on top would help with those measurements up against the ceiling? Like a fixed number (6" maybe) and then hot-glue a shim to the top of the 45 to help maintain proper expansion joint at the ceiling. Then you can measure to the factory butt-edge of the cheater tile and add 6" instead of trying to get the tape measure to read properly up against the ceiling. I hate trying to pull those measurements with the retractable tape. Just a thought.
